Transcranial Brain Stimulation (Hardcover, New): Carlo Miniussi, Walter Paulus, Paolo M. Rossini Transcranial Brain Stimulation (Hardcover, New)
Carlo Miniussi, Walter Paulus, Paolo M. Rossini
R5,148 Discovery Miles 51 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the discovery of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), these non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques have been used to investigate the state of cortical excitability, and the excitability of the cortico-cortical and corticospinal pathways. In addition, these techniques have been found to induce neuroplasticity-a significant breakthrough in our understanding of the brain at work. Transcranial Brain Stimulation presents a wide range of possible brain stimulation applications and discusses what new information can be gained from using this technique on the dynamics of brain functions, hierarchical organization, and effective connectivity. Implications of recent findings related to the therapeutic application are discussed by an international group of leading experts, who present practical guidance on the use of each technique, and catalog the results of numerous TMS and tES studies on biological and behavioral effects.

Explorations in Cognitive Neuropsychology (Paperback): Alan Parkin Explorations in Cognitive Neuropsychology (Paperback)
Alan Parkin
R1,285 Discovery Miles 12 850 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Cognitive neuropsychology has now established a major place in the teaching of undergraduate psychology degrees and is an important topic of postgraduate research. The subject is also of increasing interest to clinicians because of its links with devising remediation procedures for people with brain injury. Explorations in Cognitive Neuropsychology is the first major text to appear on this topic since the late 1980s and thus introduces the reader to a vast amount of research previously unavailable in textbook format. The book is written in a lively and engaging style which nonetheless enables the reader to get a scholarly, in-depth overview of this important field. The coverage of topics is very broad-ranging. It begins with an overview of the subject including issues such as research strategy and advances in neuroimaging. Following this are chapters on blindsight, agnosia, facial processing impairments, and the rapidly growing area of neglect. The next chapter is devoted to studies of the split brain. Two chapters then cover the enormous developments in devising functional architectures of the language system from the observation of discrete language impairments. Various aspects of memory impairments are then discussed and the book ends with a consideration of frontal lobe functions. At various points the book also covers the contribution of connectionist modelling to cognitive neuropsychology.

Psychophysical Approaches to Cognition, Volume 92 (Hardcover): D. Algom Psychophysical Approaches to Cognition, Volume 92 (Hardcover)
D. Algom
R2,694 Discovery Miles 26 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Our lives are informed by perceptual and cognitive processes at all levels, from instrumental learning to metaphorical discourse to memorial representation. Yet, historically, these two branches of experimental psychology, perception and cognition, have developed separately using independent methods of experimentation and analysis. This volume is motivated by the assumption that a fundamental integration of the two fields is fruitful methodologically and indispensable theoretically. It explores how the notion of psychophysics aligned with cognitive processes shapes the study of perception and cognition, and illuminates a variety of contemporary research issues from a novel theoretical perspective. The papers raise conceptual and metatheoretical issues against the background of relevant empirical data.

The authors provide a virtually narrative account of the most recent developments in their respective fields of expertise in psychophysics and cognitive psychology. Hence, this volume gives the interested reader an opportunity to reflect critically upon some of the current issues defining the two domains and their conjunction. Topics discussed include the psychology and psychophysics of similarity, the psychophysics of visual memory and cognitive factors in judgment. The emerging notion of cognitive psychophysics may well warrant the attention of experts in the field.

Classic Cases in Neuropsychology, Volume II (Paperback): Chris Code, Yves Joanette, Andre Roch Lecours, Claus-W. Wallesch Classic Cases in Neuropsychology, Volume II (Paperback)
Chris Code, Yves Joanette, Andre Roch Lecours, Claus-W. Wallesch
R1,494 Discovery Miles 14 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From a contemporary perspective, Classic Cases in Neuropsychology, Volume II reviews important and significant cases described in historical and modern literature where brain damage has been sustained. The single case study has always been of central importance to the discipline of neuropsychology. Cognitive neuropsychology and cognitive neurolinguistics search for universal structures in thought processes, and single patients are an important means to that end. The role of the single case study in the historical development of the field and its increasing contribution to contemporary work is therefore recognised as crucial. This follow-up to the successful Classic Cases in Neuropsychology (1996) brings together more of the important case investigations which have shaped the way we think about the relationships between brain, behaviour and cognition. The book includes cases from the rich history of neuropsychology as well as important contemporary case studies in the fields of memory, language and perception. Some of the cases described are rare, some are seminal in the field, many were the first of their type to be described and gave rise to new theories, and some are still controversial. As in the first volume, each chapter highlights the relevance of the case to the development of neuropsychology and discusses the theoretical implication of the findings. Classic Cases in Neuropsychology, Volume II will be essential reading for students and researchers alike in the fields of neuropsychology and neuroscience. It will also be of interest to speech and language pathologists, therapists and clinicians in this area.

Embodied Collective Memory - The Making and Unmaking of Human Nature (Paperback): Rafael F. Narvaez Embodied Collective Memory - The Making and Unmaking of Human Nature (Paperback)
Rafael F. Narvaez
R1,062 Discovery Miles 10 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The human body is not a given fact; it is not, as Descartes believed, a "machine made up of flesh and bones." The body is acquired, achieved, and learned. It is thus full of mimetic and mnemonic implications. The body remembers, and it does so in collectively relevant ways. Gestures, corporeal and phonetic rhythms, affective idioms, and emotional styles - perceptual, sensorial, motoric, and affective schemata - are all largely learned in shared social contexts. These aspects of the embodied experience are often consigned to habit, to bodily automatisms, and to corporeal memories that reflect aspects of culture. But if the body reflects certain aspects of culture that press to become naturalized and organically attached to social actors, it also resists these kinds of cultural pressures. These adaptive and resistive dynamics, as this book shows, are not without consequences for individuals and groups. These processes can result in both advantages and disadvantages for social actors. They can take us toward certain futures while foreclosing others. It is therefore necessary to understand how, why, and to what extent corporeal memories are constructed but also resisted, modified, or created anew.

The Will and its Brain - An Appraisal of Reasoned Free Will (Paperback): Hans Helmut Kornhuber, Luder Deecke The Will and its Brain - An Appraisal of Reasoned Free Will (Paperback)
Hans Helmut Kornhuber, Luder Deecke
R974 Discovery Miles 9 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In 1964 1965, Hans Helmut Kornhuber and Luder Deecke achieved a scientific breakthrough with the discovery of the Bereitschaftspotential (BP), or readiness potential. In The Will and its Brain, Kornhuber and Deecke present evidence that proves we can record activity from the human brain occurring prior to our volitional movements or actions. Such preparatory activity is generated by specific brain regions, particularly by the supplementary motor area (SMA) of the frontal lobe, which lies on the inner surface of the brain between the hemispheres. The primary (precentral) motor cortex (MI) later becomes activated in preparing for action. Consequently, the authors discriminate between two components of the preparatory activity of the Bereitschaftspotential: an early SMA-generated BP1 and a late MI-derived BP2. Between BP1 and BP2, the intentional activity runs over the so-called motor loop via the basal ganglia. Kornhuber and Deecke discuss these and other brain processing systems while focusing on the concept of free will. They claim that we, indeed, have free will. It may not be absolutely free, but free in terms of degrees. We can take efforts to increase our degrees of freedom through self-improvement, but we can also lose degrees of freedom through self-mismanagement.

Natural Fabrications - Science, Emergence and Consciousness (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): William Seager Natural Fabrications - Science, Emergence and Consciousness (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
William Seager
R1,493 Discovery Miles 14 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The spectacular success of the scientific enterprise over the last four hundred years has led to the promise of an all encompassing vision of the natural world. In this elegant picture, everything we observe is based upon just a few fundamental processes and entities. The almost infinite variety and complexity of the world is thus the product of emergence. But the concept of emergence is fraught with controversy and confusion. This book ponders the question of how emergence should be understood within the scientific picture, and whether a complete vision of the world can be attained that includes consciousness.

Emotions and Spirituality in Religions and Spiritual Movements (Paperback): Erika Wilson Emotions and Spirituality in Religions and Spiritual Movements (Paperback)
Erika Wilson
R1,061 Discovery Miles 10 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Applying recent psychological and neuropsychological studies of emotions, Erika Wilson explores the role of emotions in major Eastern, Western, and primal religions, as well as in some contemporary spiritual movements. The book tries to answer the following questions: What kinds of emotions and spiritual experiences arise in individuals and groups during prayer, conversions, rituals, meditations, and other spiritual practices? Which positive emotions are valued most in a particular religion or spiritual movement? How do these attitudes relate to their respective historical context? And finally, how does each religious or spiritual teaching recommend handling negative emotions?

The Neuroscience of Handwriting - Applications for Forensic Document Examination (Hardcover, New): Michael P. Caligiuri, Linton... The Neuroscience of Handwriting - Applications for Forensic Document Examination (Hardcover, New)
Michael P. Caligiuri, Linton A. Mohammed 1
R4,413 Discovery Miles 44 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Daubert trilogy of U.S. Supreme Court cases has established that scientific expert testimony must be based on science grounded in empirical research. As such, greater scrutiny is being placed on questioned document examination generally, and handwriting comparison in particular. Bridging the gap between theory and practice, The Neuroscience of Handwriting: Applications in Forensic Document Examination examines the essential neuroscientific principles underlying normal and pathological hand motor control and handwriting.

Topics discussed include:

  • Fundamental principles in the neuroanatomy and neurochemistry of hand motor control and their application to research in handwriting
  • The epidemiology, pathophysiology, and motor characteristics of neurogenerative diseases such as Parkinson's, Huntington's, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, essential tremor, and motor neuron disease and their effects on handwriting
  • Psychotropic medications prescribed for depression, bipolar disorder, and psychosis; their mechanisms of action; and their effect on motor behavior and handwriting
  • The impact of substance abuse on handwriting
  • An overview of the aging process and its effects on motor control and handwriting
  • The kinematic approach and new findings on the kinematic analyses of genuine, disguised, and forged signatures
  • The authors' laboratory research on authentic and forged signatures

An essential resource for professionals and researchers in the forensic documentation examination and legal communities, this volume provides a window on the scientific process of signature and handwriting authentication, integrating the extensive research on neural processes and exploring how disease, medication, and advanced age alter these processes.

Time, Tradition and Society in Greek Archaeology - Bridging the 'Great Divide' (Paperback): Nigel Spencer Time, Tradition and Society in Greek Archaeology - Bridging the 'Great Divide' (Paperback)
Nigel Spencer
R1,353 Discovery Miles 13 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Time, Tradition and Society in Greek Archaeology is an innovative volume which examines the relevance of archaeological theory to classical archaeology. It offers a wideranging overview of classical archaeology, from the Bronze Age to the Classical period and from mainland Greece to Cyprus. Within this framework Spencer examines many of the issues which have become important in the study of archaeology in recent years - time, the `past', gender, ideology, social structure and group identity. The papers in this collection cover such diverse topics as the rural landscape, classical art and scientific methodologies. Over the last century the study of classical archaeology has been orthodox and static. The essays in this collection examine it in the light of current theoretical archaeology and anthropology, making it more relevant and valuable to the study of archaeology in the 1990s. This is a diverse and topical collection, of great value to classicists, ancient historians, anthropologists and everyone interested in new approaches to archaeology.

Exploring Affect - The Selected Writings of Silvan S Tomkins (Hardcover): Silvan S. Tomkins Exploring Affect - The Selected Writings of Silvan S Tomkins (Hardcover)
Silvan S. Tomkins; Edited by E. Virginia Demos; Foreword by Brewster Smith
R3,570 R3,186 Discovery Miles 31 860 Save R384 (11%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Silvan Tomkins was one of the most influential theorists on emotion and emotional expression. Over a period of 40 - some years - until his death in 1991 - he developed a set of original, important ideas about the nature of affect and its relationship to cognition and personality. Tomkins dealt with fundamental questions in a fresh and provocative way, establishing affect as a separate, biological system, and providing compelling data on discrete affect expressions. Several years before his death, Professor Tomkins agreed to bring his papers (unpublished and published) together into Exploring Affect for Cambridge Studies in Emotion and Social Interaction. He worked with Paul Ekman and Klaus Scherer to develop a structure for the book that would synthesize his theory of emotion. Unfortunately, he died before he was able to complete the process. Virginia Demos, who knew Professor Tomkins well, took on the enormous task of compiling the papers and writing connective material for the book. This volume of Tomkins selected writings on affect brings together his works of four decades and makes them available at a more receptive time in the field. It is a treasure trove of provocative, insightful and relevant ideas.

The Synaptic Gospel - Teaching the Brain to Worship (Paperback): Christopher D. Rodkey The Synaptic Gospel - Teaching the Brain to Worship (Paperback)
Christopher D. Rodkey
R970 Discovery Miles 9 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this book, Christopher D. Rodkey asks how the brain worships and responds by engaging ideas from neurological science, philosophy, ritual theory, and religious education. From this exploration, two new paradigms for pastoral ministry emerge. First, Rodkey proposes a "pan-generational" principle, advocating an empathy-based approach for fostering faith communities, a principle that is radically inclusive to all generations. Second, Rodkey argues that worship and religious education should converge to include a shared goal of teaching individuals to "live liturgically." In The Synaptic Gospel, Rodkey argues that living and thinking liturgically are learned behaviors that may be promoted through pan-generational worship. The book concludes with a special emphasis on practical suggestions for youth ministry. The Synaptic Gospel will prove to be a useful theoretical tool for pastors, religious educators, youth ministers, church music professionals, and seminary students.

Choosing Effective Support for People on the Autism Spectrum - A Guide Based on Academic Perspectives and Lived Experience... Choosing Effective Support for People on the Autism Spectrum - A Guide Based on Academic Perspectives and Lived Experience (Hardcover)
Matthew Bennett, Emma Goodall, Jane Nugent
R3,844 Discovery Miles 38 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is essential for anyone interested in learning about the therapeutic potential of orthodox and state-of-the-art supports for autistics. Using research evidence, supports are rated using a Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Tin category system. 'Gold' is extremely promising and use with confidence, whereas 'Tin' is extremely unsafe and potentially life threatening. This book, however, is more complex than just presenting literature reviews about supports for autistics and then rating the efficacy of the support. In addition to this, the insights and experiences of autistics about the autism supports examined are presented. Such testimonials provide an insider perspective from those who ultimately stand to benefit or suffer after receiving a support - namely autistics themselves.

Laurence Armand French, Lidija Nikolic-Novakovic
R1,058 Discovery Miles 10 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

War trauma has long been associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a term coined in 1980 to explain the post-war impact of Vietnam veterans. The Gulf and Balkan wars added new dimensions to the traditional PTSD definition, due largely to the changing dynamics of these wars. With these wars came unprecedented use of reserve and National Guard personnel in U.S. forces along with the largest contingent of female military personnel to date. Rapid deployment, sexual assaults, and suicides surfaced as paramount untreated problems within coalition force. Rapes, torture, suicides, and a high prevalence of untreated civilian victims of the Balkan wars added to the new dimensions of the traumatic stress continuum. Suicide bombers and roadside bombings added to the definition of combat stress, as military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan were forced to be constantly vigilant for these attacks-regardless of whether they served in combat areas.

The Processes of Defense - Trauma, Drives, and Reality A New Synthesis (Paperback): Joseph Fernando The Processes of Defense - Trauma, Drives, and Reality A New Synthesis (Paperback)
Joseph Fernando
R1,332 Discovery Miles 13 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this direct and scholarly book, Dr. Joseph Fernando provides the first in-depth exploration and up-to-date revision of the psychoanalytic theory of defenses since Anna Freud's 1936 classic, The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense. The workings of three basic forms of defense-repression, denial, and post-traumatic defenses-are clearly described and illustrated with examples from Dr. Fernando's clinical practice. While comprehensive and authoritative in its coverage of defenses, the book is also highly original and clinically relevant, as Fernando introduces and illustrates new concepts including the zero process (a form of mental functioning related to trauma), contrast defenses (a type of denial defense that leads to repetition), and compound defenses (defenses formed by the tight melding of two or more basic defenses). This is a book not only of innovation but also of integration. Classical psychoanalytic concepts are integrated with new ideas related to current concerns with trauma, denial, and narcissism, and theoretical explications are integrated with practical advice about the handling of different defenses and clinical situations. This book will appeal to both beginners and seasoned clinicians and theoreticians, as well as to anyone interested in psychoanalytic thought.
