Sexuality and Crime - A Neo-Darwinian Perspective (Hardcover): Anthony Walsh Sexuality and Crime - A Neo-Darwinian Perspective (Hardcover)
Anthony Walsh
bundle available
R3,958 Discovery Miles 39 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Written by one of the leading figures in biosocial criminology and evolutionary psychology, this work explores the tight relationship between criminality and indiscriminate sexuality within the framework of life history theory. The underlying thesis is that traits associated with a strong libido, indiscriminately expressed, are intertwined with traits associated with criminal behavior; that is, excessive interest in sexual adventures pursued in an irresponsible way is undergirded by the same individual short-run hedonistic traits that define criminality. While traditional criminology tends to view sexual and criminal behavior as separate domains, many biosocial criminologists, evolutionary psychologists, neuroscientists, and behavioral and molecular geneticists are not at all surprised that a link exists between criminality and sexuality. Research shows that the statistical relationship between indiscriminate sexuality and criminal behavior is stronger than for most other variables associated with crime, although most studies dealing with this relationship are from outside the dominant environmentalism paradigm of criminology. Using life history theory as the theoretical umbrella for exploring the relationship between indiscriminate sexuality and criminal behavior, the book explores how and why criminal behavior is related to hypersexuality. Life history theory, which has a long and fruitful history of use among evolutionary biologists who use it to investigate the relationship between mating strategies and the environment among various species of animals (including humans) is particularly suited to understanding how an exclusive focus on mating effort is related to criminal behavior. This book will be of interest to scholars and students in criminology, psychology, and sociology, and anyone interested in examining the interconnection between biological, psychological, and socio-environmental factors in relation to criminal behavior.

The Power of Surprise - How Your Brain Secretly Changes Your Beliefs (Hardcover): Michael Rousell, PhD The Power of Surprise - How Your Brain Secretly Changes Your Beliefs (Hardcover)
Michael Rousell, PhD
R867 Discovery Miles 8 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Rousell examines the rich and complex nuances of the science of surprise and shows us how we can use it strategically to enrich lives. Random events transform us. After studying formative events, moments that define us, for over three decades, Michael Rousell discovered that most of them took place during a spark of surprise. This breakthrough launched a fascinating journey from neuroscience to stand-up comedy. Rousell draws on research from a wide variety of brain science disciplines (cognition, motivation, neuroscience, psychology, artificial intelligence, persuasion, evolution, and learning), then examines those who already use surprise strategically (comedians, film directors, entertainers, magicians, and novelists). This examination illustrates the hidden, yet critical features inherent in surprise, while demystifying the complexities. Surprise evolved as a mechanism to instantly change our beliefs. Rousell shows how surprising events produce invisible influence because they open a window to spontaneous belief change with no warning or conscious awareness. You'll see how seemingly minor features of surprise create profound differences and can be used to strategically enrich lives, create positive mindsets, and maximize influence.

Schizophrenia remains an important challenge to psychiatry, with its causes and underlying brain mechanisms yet to be fully revealed. Currently available treatments are neither universally effective nor without unwanted effects. These aspects, together with the high prevalence of schizophrenia, its often debilitating nature, and the associated family and social burden, make this mental disorder one of the most complex public health issues of our times.

The purpose of the Advances in Schizophrenia Research series is to provide comprehensive periodic reviews of the wide range of research studies carried out around the world, with the dual purpose of solving the schizophrenia puzzle, and providing clues to new forms of treatment and prevention for this disorder. A special feature of the series is its broad scope, virtually encompassing all fields of schizophrenia research: epidemiology and risk factors; psychopathology; diagnostic boundaries; cognition; outcome and prognosis; pathophysiology; genetics; pharmacological and psychological forms of treatment and rehabilitation; community care; and stigmatization.

Taking Development Seriously A Festschrift for Annette Karmiloff-Smith - Neuroconstructivism and the Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Understanding the Emergence of Mind (Paperback)
Michael S. C. Thomas, Denis Mareschal, Victoria Knowland
R1,421 Discovery Miles 14 210 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This influential festschrift honours the legacy of Annette Karmiloff-Smith, a seminal thinker in the field of child development and a pioneer in developmental cognitive neuroscience. The current volume brings together many of the researchers, collaborators and students who worked with Professor Karmiloff-Smith to show how her ideas have influenced and continue to influence their own research. Over four parts, each covering a different phase or domain of Karmiloff-Smith's research career, leading developmental psychologists in cognition, neuroscience and computer science reflect on her extensive contribution, from her early work with Piaget in Geneva to her innovative research project investigating children with Down syndrome to understand the mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease. The chapters provide a mix of cutting-edge science and reminiscence, providing a fascinating insight into the historical contexts in which many of Annette's theoretical insights arose, including such ideas as the microgenetic approach, representational redescription and neuroconstructivism. The chapters also provide updates about how earlier theoretical ideas have stood the test of time, and present unpublished data from the early years of Annette's career. Taking Development Seriously is essential reading for students and scholars in child development and developmental neuroscience.

Pathophysiology of Pain Perception (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): Stefan Lautenbacher, Roger B. Fillingim Pathophysiology of Pain Perception (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
Stefan Lautenbacher, Roger B. Fillingim
R2,929 Discovery Miles 29 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Readers have access to legions of books dealing with the molecular, genetic, neurochemical, neurophysiological, neuroanatomical, neuroradiological and psychological aspects of pain as well as with the clinical approaches to pain from various medical disciplines. Why then is it necessary to publish a book on the pathophysiologyofpain perception? Pain can result either from noxious events due to lesions, injuries, diseases, etc. , or from disturbances in the system transducing, transforming, and processing the potential pain signal or from an interaction of both. Under certain pathological conditions, the pain-processing system, which includes both physiological and psychological components, can produce the experience of pain in the absence of any peripheral noxious event. This book primarily ex- amines these pathological alterations in the pain-signalling system, and the authors provide information on the functioning of the pain-processing system under normal and pathological conditions. The understanding of pain perception is essential for optimal diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pain. Considerable evidence now indicates that alterations in pain per- ception are characteristic of many clinical pain states. Whether disturbed pain perception is a truly etiological or only a maintaining factor-c-or even a mere epiphenomenon of chronic functional pain-is reviewed in detail by L. Arendt-Nielsen, C. R. Covelli, R. B. Fillingim,]. M. Gillespie, T. Graven-Nielsen, E. Kosek, S. Lautenbacher, M. Peters, A. Pielsticker, DO. Price, G. B. Rollman, P. Svensson and G. N. Verne for headache, back pain, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, temporomandibular pain disorder, irritable bowel syndrome and menstrual cycle-related pain disorders.

Time, Internal Clocks and Movement, Volume 115 (Hardcover, Reprinted from ed.): M.A. Pastor, J. Artieda Time, Internal Clocks and Movement, Volume 115 (Hardcover, Reprinted from ed.)
M.A. Pastor, J. Artieda
R4,175 Discovery Miles 41 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Interest in the concept of time has a long history and has been a topic of study for a wide range of investigators. No change can take place without specification of time. While philosophers and physicists have been intrigued by the concept of subjective perception of time and its relationship to real time, natural scientists have been concerned mainly with investigating time as a factor in understanding the behaviour of animals from the migratory habits of birds to the periodical breeding cycles. The immense bulk of temporal perception studies, the variety of approaches, methods of measurement and even terminology has led to a difficulty in reaching a global interpretation of the results.

This book aims to give an integrative approach of time sense and to focus the analysis on temporal factors in the processing of movement, trying to link temporal perception studies in the final common pathway, that is motion. To give some clues of human brain integrative processes at higher levels. And, finally, to clarify the neurophysiological substrate of these operations.

A Scientific Assessment of the Validity of Mystical Experiences - Understanding Altered Psychological and Neurophysiological... A Scientific Assessment of the Validity of Mystical Experiences - Understanding Altered Psychological and Neurophysiological States (Paperback)
Andrew Papanicolaou
R1,175 Discovery Miles 11 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this book the approach of the natural sciences is adopted to confront the ontological question of how far mystical experiences can be considered as reports of an objective reality rather than reports of subjective delusions. Moving beyond traditional philosophical or cultural and theological interpretations of mystical phenomena, the author uses inductive inference to analyze claims made by secular and religious mystics, highlight links between altered states of consciousness and neurochemistry, and counters reductionist claims that mystical states are exclusively products of neurochemical, neurophysiological, or psychopathological factors. The text also considers the positive long-term effects of proper use of psychedelics and meditation. This fresh approach to mystical experiences will be of interest to scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students working in the areas of psychology and neuroscience, and with an interest in mysticism in religious studies and philosophy.

Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder - An... Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder - An Autoethnographic Inquiry (Hardcover)
Dee Phyllis Genetti
R3,686 Discovery Miles 36 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder provides an autoethnographic qualitative study that portrays the author's recovery from a devastating life changing event - a car crash resulting in the hybrid diagnosis of TBI and PTSD, leading to PTG and identity transformation over a ten-year recovery period. In so doing, the text offers a comprehensive literature review on TBI, PTSD, PTG, and disability culture. Throughout, the author explores whether growth (PTG) and distress (PTSD), and whether TBI and PTSD can co-exist. Having lost her ability to read and write, the author had to learn how to learn, to heal and to have faith again. As a licensed trauma therapist and researcher, she collected self-observational data by writing her actual behaviors, thoughts and emotions in real time, both in a field and a process journal, even before she could write in full sentences. The many symptoms and co-morbidities of TBI, PTSD and the tenets of PTG are portrayed as they evolved in recovery showing the behavior and characteristics of each. The text refers to actual journal entries, medical records, and clinical notes from rehabilitation specialists, alternating between her clinical analysis and interpretation. The findings show that tragedy and suffering can lead to growth and positive change (PTG) after TBI, even though the precipitating trauma and psychological distress (PTSD) may persist for years. Changes are seen in self-perception, interpersonal relationships, and philosophies of life. This chronicled account of the author's emergent recovery from patient to doctor is intended to benefit neuro-rehabilitation service providers (neuropsychologists, primary care physicians, speech-language pathologists) and also mental health clinicians who can see the evolution of Posttraumatic Growth for what is now the new next step for many in PTSD recovery.
