The Unconscious in Social and Political Life (Paperback): David Morgan The Unconscious in Social and Political Life (Paperback)
David Morgan
R1,055 Discovery Miles 10 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Traumatic events happen in every age, yet there is a particularly cataclysmic feeling to our own epoch that is so attractive to some and so terrifying to others. The terrible events of September 11th 2001 still resonate and the repercussions continue to this day: the desperation of immigrants fleeing terror, the uncertainty of Brexit, Donald Trump in the White House, the rise of the alt-right and hard left, increasing fundamentalism, and terror groups intent on causing destruction to the Western way of life. If that were not enough, we also have to grapple with the enormity of climate change and the charge that if we do not act now, it will be too late. Is it any wonder many are left overwhelmed by the events they see on the news? Galvanised by the events outside of his consulting room, in 2015, David Morgan began The Political Mind seminars at the British Psychoanalytical Society and their successful run continues today. A series of superlative seminars, mostly presented by colleagues from the British Society plus a few select external experts, that examine a dazzling array of relevant topics to provide a psychoanalytic understanding of just what is going on in our world. This book is the first in The Political Mind series to bring these seminars to a wider audience. The Unconscious in Political and Social Life contains compelling contributions from Christopher Bollas, Michael Rustin, Jonathan Sklar, David Bell, Philip Stokoe, Roger Kennedy, David Morgan, M. Fakhry Davids, Ruth McCall, R. D. Hinshelwood, Renee Danziger, Josh Cohen, Sally Weintrobe, and Margot Waddell. They investigate so many vital issues affecting us today: the evolution of democracy, right-wing populism, prejudice, the rise of the far right, attitudes to refugees and migrants, neoliberalism, fundamentalism, terrorism, the Palestine-Israel situation, political change, feminism, austerity in the UK, financial globalisation, and climate change. This book needs to be read by all who are concerned by the state of the world today. Psychoanalysis and psychoanalysts with their awareness of what motivates human beings bring clarity and fresh insight to these matters. A deeper understanding of humanity awaits the reader of The Unconscious in Political and Social Life.

Racist States of Mind - Understanding the Perversion of Curiosity and Concern (Paperback): Narendra Keval Racist States of Mind - Understanding the Perversion of Curiosity and Concern (Paperback)
Narendra Keval
R834 Discovery Miles 8 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Racism is a treacherous phenomenon with many faces. These allow it a remarkable capacity to co-exist with support for ethnic and cultural diversity. In a racist state of mind, real or imagined loss which is experienced as a narcissistic injury to the self, group or nation is often expressed in a nostalgic gaze that has become infused with a grievance and rage that is expressed in a wish to thwart the desire and emotional freedom of others. In this book the author suggests that the fantasy dramas of the primal scene provide an essential conceptual framework through which to explore and analyze how the developmental processes of mourning are sidestepped through a retreat to omnipotence and manic mechanisms. These offer the compensatory excitements of hatred, cruelty and violence that can lead to the collapse of a triangular mental space which damages the development of both curiosity and concern for others. Some of the predicaments and challenges of engaging with these states of mind are explored through the prism of the consulting room, group, organizational and societal life.

Redefining Murder, Transforming Emotion - An Exploration of Forgiveness after Loss Due to Homicide (Paperback): Kristen Discola Redefining Murder, Transforming Emotion - An Exploration of Forgiveness after Loss Due to Homicide (Paperback)
Kristen Discola
R1,291 Discovery Miles 12 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Offering insights based on years of original research, Redefining Murder, Transforming Emotion: An Exploration of Forgiveness after Loss Due to Homicide investigates the ideas and experiences of individuals who have lost loved ones to homicide (co-victims) in order to advance our understanding of the emotional transformation of forgiveness. It stands at the crux of two vibrant, growing fields: criminal victimology and the sociology of emotion. Analysis of 36 intensive interviews with co-victims and three years of participant observation of self-help groups and other victim-centered events offers a multidimensional understanding of forgiveness. Specifically, this book answers the questions of "What?," "When?," "How?," and "Why?" forgiveness occurs by exploring co-victims' ideas about forgiveness, the differential experiences of various groups of people, the processes through which forgiveness occurs in a variety of extreme circumstances of homicide, and co-victims' motivations toward forgiveness. The book concludes with commentary on overarching conclusions based on this work; theoretical and practical implications; suggestions for directions for future inquiry; and an in-depth account of the methodological strategies employed to gather such rich and nuanced data. This book will appeal to academics and students alike, within relevant fields, including sociology, criminology, restorative justice, victim services, psychology, and social welfare, as well as individuals seeking a better understanding of their own experiences, including co-victims or others whose lives have been altered by extreme forms of violence and upheaval. Its detailed postscript will also serve well those interested in qualitative methodology in social science research.

Psychoanalytic Credos - Personal and Professional Journeys of Psychoanalysts (Hardcover): Jill Salberg Psychoanalytic Credos - Personal and Professional Journeys of Psychoanalysts (Hardcover)
Jill Salberg
R3,938 Discovery Miles 39 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Developing psychoanalytic credos, a set of beliefs that inform how you listen and approach the analytic enterprise with patients, is in many ways the scaffolding of psychoanalytic training. Drawing upon Mannie Ghent's original Credo essay, 27 psychoanalysts were asked to write their credos and/or their psychoanalytic journey. This book represents a multi-theoretical and multi-generational grouping, trained at different institutes, during different eras (grouped by decades 1960-2000) and across cultures. They are drawn from analysts identified with Relational, Object Relations, Contemporary Freudians and Kleinian/Bionian perspectives as well as those who don't easily fit categorization. This book serves to provide companionship to analysts in training, as part of reading lists in institutes as well as analysts post-training and yet still evolving in their psychoanalytic journey.

Madkind - The Origin and Development of the Mind (Hardcover): Charles Berg Madkind - The Origin and Development of the Mind (Hardcover)
Charles Berg
R3,236 Discovery Miles 32 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1962, the original blurb reads: 'This provocative book explores the whole range of human thought conduct and beliefs. Commencing with primitive man and his superstitions it goes on to study our present-day cultural institutions, customs, ritual and other behaviour upon which we pride ourselves. All of these are shown to have identical primitive mechanisms and to be subjectively determined without reference to scientific knowledge. These delusions are shown to be mostly undesirable and harmful and the author goes on to state that only objective thinking, scientifically based, can lead to any ultimate good. The later chapters contain an aetiological study of the mind. The author states "If we can consider the human mind in the light of its origin and development we may better appreciate its basic nature and its inevitable limitations". The subject matter is amply illustrated with clinical examples in Dr Berg's usual lively style. This book is one which will affect all readers. None of us is immune from delusions, however much we may delude ourselves to the contrary, and the presentation of these truths will to some of us seem shocking in the extreme.' Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.

Emotions and the Therapist - A Systemic-Dialogical Approach (Paperback): Paolo Bertrando Emotions and the Therapist - A Systemic-Dialogical Approach (Paperback)
Paolo Bertrando
R1,165 Discovery Miles 11 650 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

In recent years, systemic theory and practice adopted a dialogical orientation, centred on the persons of the therapist and client. This has led to a growing attention toward emotions, which, in this book, is developed in terms of emotional systems. An emotional system in therapy may be viewed as the sum of the emotions existing and interacting in people's lives. Relevant changes in life happen when emotional stances and sequences change within the system, leading, for example, to a greater sense of agency or hope, or to a different perception of the situation. This book looks at emotions within human systems in terms of dominant and silent emotions, which shape and are shaped by human relationships, and may be played in several ways according to reciprocal emotional positioning. The therapist uses his or her own feeling, and understanding of the emotions within the therapeutic dialogue, in order to create hypotheses and new dialogues which allow change.

Future Psychoanalysis - Toward a Psychology of the Human Subject (Hardcover): Ahmed Fayek Future Psychoanalysis - Toward a Psychology of the Human Subject (Hardcover)
Ahmed Fayek
R2,593 Discovery Miles 25 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A crisis in psychoanalysis has been developing since the 1970s, manifesting in a gradual but persistent loss of patients and young mental health providers in psychoanalytic training and therapy. In a peculiar way, the Freudian informative theory of psychoanalysis has been going through a parallel crisis of its own. There have been internal disagreements and differences among analysts about how to develop the theory and protect the profession of psychoanalysis. The internal disputes have resulted in chaotic theoretical plurality, which replaced classical informative theory. In spite of obvious and serious concerns about these crises, none of the solutions has been useful. Future Psychoanalysis: Toward a Psychology of the Human Subject focuses on the future of psychoanalysis considering its current critical condition. The informative theory of psychoanalysis has reached its limits, but its structural base offers a comprehensive theory, promising fruitful future psychoanalysis. It is a theory of the structural foundation of the intrapsychical core of the human subject. Since the human sciences are currently adopting the structural outlook in their fields of research, psychoanalysis could join the humanities as one of its fields, not just as a clinical profession that is parasitically linked to the more active idiographic fields of epistemology. Future Psychoanalysis introduces a structural theory of psychoanalysis to replace the demising informative theory and points to where future psychoanalysis will thrive.
