Yijiang Zhong analyses the formation of Shinto as a complex and
diverse religious tradition in early modern and Meiji Japan,
1600-1868. Highlighting the role of the god Okuninushi and the
mythology centered on the Izumo Shrine in western Japan as part of
this process, he shows how and why this god came to be ignored in
State Shinto in the modern period. In doing so, Zhong moves away
from the traditional understanding of Shinto history as something
completely internal to the nation of Japan, and instead situates
the formation of Shinto within a larger geopolitical context
involving intellectual and political developments in the East Asian
region and the role of western colonial expansion. The Origin of
Modern Shinto in Japan draws extensively on primary source
materials in Japan, many of which were only made available to the
public less than a decade ago and have not yet been studied. Source
materials analysed include shrine records and object materials,
contemporary written texts, official materials from the national
and provincial levels, and a broad range of visual sources based on
contemporary prints, drawings, photographs and material culture.

This book examines the paradoxical structure of Yijing known as the
Book of Changes-a structure that promotes in a non-hierarchical way
the harmony and transformation of opposites. Because the
non-hierarchical model is not limited to the East Asian tradition,
it will be considered in relation to ideas developed in the West,
including Carl Jung's archetypal psychology, Georg Cantor's
Diagonal Theorem, Rene Girard's mimetic desire, and Alfred North
Whitehead's process thought. By critically reviewing the numerical
and symbolic structures of Yijing, the author introduces Kim Ilbu's
Jeongyeok (The Book of Right Changes) and demonstrates that he
intensifies the correlation between opposites to overcome any
hierarchical system implied by the Yijing. Both the Yijing and the
Jeongyeok are textual sources for kindling a discussion about the
Divine conceived in Eastern and Western philosophical-theological
traditions quite differently. While the non-theistic aspects of the
Ultimate feature prominently in Yijing, Jeongyeok extends them to a
theistic issue by bringing the notion of Sangjae, the Supreme Lord,
which can lead to a fruitful dialogue for understanding the dipolar
characteristics of the divine reality-personal and impersonal. The
author considers their contrast that has divided Eastern and
Western religious belief systems, to be transformational and open
to a wider perspective of the divine conception in the process of
change.

This is a cross-cultural study of the multifaceted relations
between Buddhism, its materiality, and instances of religious
violence and destruction in East Asia, which remains a vast and
still largely unexplored field of inquiry. Material objects are
extremely important not just for Buddhist practice, but also for
the conceptualization of Buddhist doctrines; yet, Buddhism
developed ambivalent attitudes towards such need for objects, and
an awareness that even the most sacred objects could be destroyed.

This book examines historical changes in the grammar of the
Indo-Aryan languages from the period of their earliest attestations
in Vedic Sanskrit (around 1000 bc) to contemporary Hindi. Uta
Reinoehl focuses specifically on the rise of configurational
structure as a by-product of the grammaticalization of
postpositions: while Vedic Sanskrit lacks function words that
constrain nominal expressions into phrasal units - one of the
characteristics of a non-configurational language - New Indo-Aryan
languages have postpositions which organize nominal expressions
into postpositional phrases. The grammaticalization of
postpositions and the concomitant syntactic changes are traced
through the three millennia of Indo-Aryan attested history with a
focus on Vedic Sanskrit, Middle Indic Pali and Apabhramsha, Early
New Indic Old Awadhi, and finally Hindi. Among the topics discussed
are the constructions in which the postpositions grammaticalize,
the origins of the postpositional template, and the
paradigmatization of the various elements involved into a single
functional class of postpositions. The book outlines how it is
semantic and pragmatic changes that induce changes on the
expression side, ultimately resulting in the establishment of
phrasal, and thus low-level configurational, syntax.

The practice of making votive offerings into fire dates from the
earliest periods of human history, and is found in many different
religious cultures. Throughout the tantric world, this kind of
ritual offering practice is known as the homa. With roots in Vedic
and Zoroastrian rituals, the tantric homa developed in early
medieval India. Since that time it has been transmitted to Central
and East Asia by tantric Buddhist practitioners. Today, Hindu forms
are also being practiced outside of India as well. Despite this
historical and cultural range, the homa retains an identifiable
unity of symbolism and ritual form. The essays collected in Homa
Variations provide detailed studies of a variety of homa forms,
providing an understanding of the history of the homa from its
inception up to its use in the present. At the same time, the
authors cover a wide range of religious cultures, from India and
Nepal to Tibet, China, and Japan. The theoretical focus of the
collection is the study of ritual change over long periods of time,
and across the boundaries of religious cultures. The identifiable
unity of the homa allows for an almost unique opportunity to
examine ritual change from such a broad perspective.
Hinduism has two major roots. The more familiar is the religion
brought to South Asia in the second millennium BCE by speakers of
Aryan or Indo-Iranian languages, a branch of the Indo-European
language family. Another, more enigmatic, root is the Indus
civilization of the third millennium BCE, which left behind
thousands of short inscriptions in a forgotten pictographic script.
Discovered in the valley of the Indus River in the early 1920s, the
Indus civilization had a population estimated at one million
people, in more than 1000 settlements, several of which were cities
of some 50,000 inhabitants. With an area of nearly a million square
kilometers, the Indus civilization was more extensive than the
other key urban cultures of the time, in Mesopotamia and Egypt.
Yet, after almost a century of excavation and research the Indus
civilization remains little understood. What language did the Indus
people speak? How might we decipher the exquisitely carved Indus
inscriptions? What deities did they worship? Are the roots of
contemporary Hinduism to be found in the religion of the Indus
civilization as well as in the Vedic religion? Since the rise of
Hindu nationalist politics in the 1980s, these questions have been
debated with increasing animosity, colored by the history of modern
colonialism in India. This is especially true of the enigmatic
Indus script, which is at the hub of the debates, and a particular
focus of this book. Asko Parpola has spent fifty years researching
the roots of Hinduism to answer these fundamental questions. In
this pioneering book, he traces the Indo-Iranian speakers from the
Aryan homeland north of the Black Sea through the Eurasian steppes
to Central, West, and South Asia. Among many other things, he
discusses the profound impact of the invention of the horse-drawn
chariot on Indo-Aryan religion, and presents new ideas on the
origin and formation of the Vedic literature and rites, and the
great Hindu epics.
Over the course of the last millennium in Tibet, some tantric
yogins have taken on norm-overturning modes of behavior, including
provoking others to violence, publicly consuming filth, having sex,
and dressing in human remains. While these individuals were called
"mad," their apparent mental unwellness was not seen as resulting
from any unfortunate circumstance, but symptomatic of having
achieved a higher state of existence through religious practice.

alike. Focusing on the lives and works of three "holy madmen" from
the fifteenth century - the Madman of Tsang (Tsangnyon Heruka, or
Sangye Gyeltsen, 1452-1507, and author of The Life of Milarepa),
the Madman of U (Unyon Kungpa Sangpo, 1458-1532), and the Madman of
the Drukpa Kagyu (Drukpa Kunle, 1455-1529). DiValerio shows how
literary representations of these madmen came to play a role in the
formation of sectarian identities and the historical mythologies of
various sects. DiValerio also conveys a well-rounded understanding
of the human beings behind these colorful personas by looking at
the trajectories of their lives, their religious practices and
their literary works, all in their due historical context. In the
process he ranges from lesser-known tantric practices to central
Tibetan politics to the nature of sainthood, and the "holy madmen"
emerge as self-aware and purposeful individuals who were anything
but crazy.
