1845. Part Two of Three. With an Essay on the Right Interpretation and Understanding of the Scriptures Thomas Arnold, famous schoolmaster, head of Rugby School writes in the preface: They (sermons) were all written within the last fifteen months, that is, since the beginning of that aggravated state of disorder in our social relations, which now wears so threatening an aspect. But the views which they contain I have entertained for many years, and have long anticipated the crisis which has come upon us. Would it were as easy to discover the remedies for the evil, now that it is come, as it was to foresee that is must come. This volume contains 34 sermons, each based on a passage from the bible and the essay on the Right Interpretation and Understanding of the Scriptures. As recent domestic and geopolitical events have become increasingly dominated by intolerant forms of religious thought and action, the critical study of religion continues to find itself largely ignored in the public square. Caught between those who assert that its principal purpose is to reflect the perspectives of those who believe and those who assert that its only proper place is to expose these same worldviews as deceptive social and economic mechanisms of power, the discipline has generally failed to find a truly audible voice. Rejecting both of these conservative and liberal modes of knowing as insufficient to the radical subject that is religion, Jeffrey J. Kripal offers in this book another possibility, that of the serpent's gift. Such a gift hisses a form of "gnosis," that is, a deeply critical approach to religion that is at the same time profoundly engaged with the altered states of consciousness and energy that are naively literalized by the proponents of faith and too quickly dismissed by the proponents of pure reason. Kripal does not simply describe such a gnosis. He performs and transmits it through four meditations on the sexualities of Jesus, the mystical humanism of Ludwig Feuerbach, the gnostic potentials of the comparative method, and the American mythologies of the comic book. From the erotics of the gospels to the mutant powers of the superhero, "The Serpent's Gift" promises its readers both an intellectual exile from our present religious and sexual ignorance and a transfigured hope in the spiritual potentials of the human species.
REVEREND SAM: THE TECHNOLOGY OF SALVATION. This is the promise of Sam, brainchild of George Henderson. George, a religious speechwriter with little faith in anything except his own cynicism, is facing pecuniary ruin due to his association with evangelical libertines. He divines an absurdity of an idea: a robot preacher who would be faultless. All that would have to be supplied would be prerecorded sermons written by George, for a nominal fee, of course. With the support of his financier cousin, Eric, and the animatronics genius of Louis O'Cain, George sets his plan in motion. Sam's speeches soon become both popular and inflammatory. Everyone from a suspicious government to spurned business partners begin pressing from the shadows, leaving George walking a fine line between fortune and sedition.

Edward Payson Hammond spent much of his life and ministry traveling the world to preach the Gospel, with a special emphasis upon children. His labors were honored by men like C.H. Spurgeon, Andrew Bonar, W.S. Plumer and multitudes of others. This volume will immediately capture the attention of the youngest children as Hammond relates his experience of first entering his journey to the city of Jerusalem. Each of the first four chapters is a moving appeal to children to turn from sin to trust the Savior of sinners. The final chapter is addressed to those who have come to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. A powerful book to present the gospel to children 6-12 years old.

In the prequel to BIBLE WARNINGS Richard Newton has eleven powerful sermons addressed to the minds and hearts of children on the "exceeding great and precious promises" of God. In his own words, "I have written these sermons about these promises, in the hope that my young friends, who read them, or hear them read, may be helped and encouraged in their efforts to love and serve the blessed Savior. My heart's desire and prayer to God is that His blessing may rest upon this book, and make it useful to the lambs of his flock." A MOST ENCOURAGING VOLUME FOR ALL AGES!
The three decades since the founding of MSUU (Ministerial Sisterhood Unitarian Universalist) have seen not only a remarkable increase in the percentage of women in professional ministry but an equally remarkable transformation of the nature of ministry itself. Reading these sermons affords an opportunity to see what's been on women's (and men's) minds and how these concerns have contributed to the changes --Rev. Dr. Marni Harmony, Minister, First Unitarian Church of Orlando, Florida, and Founding Member of MSUU told through sixteen award-winning sermons. It is also the story of women in ministry and their rise from a tiny minority to over half of the Unitarian Universalist ministers in only twenty-five years. issues that concern both women and men. Often drawing on historical women's lives and words for inspiration, thirteen women and three men explore the challenges of living lives of integrity and faith in today's world. By sharing their insight and wisdom, these authors encourage all who share their words to live more authentic lives and do what they can to work for a more just world.
Jesus and the Gospels is one of the most popular religion courses at colleges, and it is required at many seminaries and divinity schools. This textbook, written by an award-winning educator, is designed for a semester-long course in both these settings. Moreover, it could be used as a supplementary text in courses on christology, the historical Jesus, New Testament literature, and the Bible. Murphy will provide an introduction to the gospels that does justice to the full range of modern critical methods and insights. He will discuss the implications of these methods for how we understand the nature of the gospels and how we can read them today. The chapters will sketch the portrait of Jesus that emerges from each gospel, and then examine the canonical view of Jesus by comparing and contrasting these pictures, as well as the ones that emerge from the non-canonical gospels and from the modern quest for the historical Jesus. This work is a sermon preached at Paul's on December 10, 1654 on the monster of sinful self-seeking, together with a description of the heavenly and blessed self-seeking. These words may very fitly be called Paul's complaint, or black bill of indictment drawn up against the times in which he lived. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty, faded or difficult to read. Written in Old English.

Part One addresses 'Theological Foundations.' The five essays in this section deal with the Bible, Theology and Ecumenism. The subjects of theological methods, contextual hermeneutics, and appropriate curriculum are given special attention. Of course even foundational issues cannot be discussed in a vacuum and so each of the essays addresses these foundational subjects in the light of African realities. Part Two deals with 'Contemporary Issues.' It is particularly in this section that the traditional themes in African theology have been somewhat displaced by concerns which are today very pressing indeed. Three essays are devoted to the question of HIV/AIDS. This disease, which has devastated the African continent, demands a theological and practical response from those who claim to follow Jesus Christ. If the churches do not respond to this crisis with energy and determination we should not be surprised if the next generation wonders whether the Gospel has the power which we claim that it has. Two essays address the question of Islam and Muslim-Christian Relations in Africa. The resurgence of Islam in the world today is a concern of many. For those who believe in Jesus, this is a challenge which demands much wisdom and love. How should we respond to our Muslim neighbours? What are appropriate and thoughtful ways to share the love of Christ? Two further essays appear under the title of 'The Marginalized.' This could, of course, be a much large section. Those who suffer from AIDS could be included in this number, and one might have expected to see at least one essay on the place of women. In this volume, however, the 'disabled' and youth are highlighted. Both groups are clearly in need of the attention of the churches, and both groups are clearly misunderstood and neglected. The final section of Part Two contains essays, which focus attention on 'Theological Paedagogy.' All of the other contributions to this volume make suggestions and arguments about curriculum, resources, and issues of concern for theological educators. The causal aim of this book is that these essays may help us to reflect in an intentional way on the implications of contemporary realities for the future of theological education.
1850. Part One of Three. Thomas Arnold, famous schoolmaster, head of Rugby School writes in the preface: The sermons contained in this volume are printed exactly as they were preached, with the exception of a very few verbal alterations. In their matter they have not attempted to enter upon points of criticism, or to engage in any of the more difficult questions of theology. They are directly practical; but it has been my endeavor in all of them to enforce what may be called peculiarly Christian practice; that is, such a perfection in thought, word, and deed, as the Spirit of God should inspire to the enlightened understandings and willing hearts of those whom Christ redeemed, and who are now no longer under the law, but under grace. This volume contains 30 sermons, each based on a passage from the bible and two sermons on the interpretation of prophecy. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing. Other volumes in this set are ISBN(s): 1417945656, 1417945664.
By God's grace, I have taken it upon myself to write down some of the principles that He taught me concerning discernment, spirit beings and walking in the realm of the spirit. So many people in Christendom have little or no knowledge at all concerning what goes on in the spiritual realm. As a result, they are not able to fight off the enemy of their soul who is out to steal, kill and destroy every human being. My hope is that people's spiritual "eyes of understanding will be enlightened" as they study the principles outlined in this book. It is designed to help the reader understand the key principles about discerning of spirits, the origin of evil spirits, the activities of evil spirits, how to identify evil spirits and how to expel evil spirits. I also answered one of the most frequently asked questions in the body of Christ today, "Can a Christian Have a Demon?" It is my hope and desire that by the time an average person goes through the teachings outlined in this book, he or she will no longer be ignorant about evil spirits and about spiritual matters. I therefore, encourage you to take the Chapters in this book seriously and make a determination to apprehend the principles outlined in each Chapter. May the Lord give you great revelation as you read.
"This little work, after having passed through fifteen editions in this country (USA), and we know not how many in England, after having been translated into French, German, Greek, and many more languages, printed in raised letters for the blind, and last of all, having been adopted as a school-book for the liberated slaves at Sierra Leone, is now sent forth by the publishers in a new dress, with the addition of two new Lectures." - Author's Preface John Todd (1800-1873) was a graduate of Yale College and Andover Theological Seminary. His theology was molded by the works of Jonathan Edwards, and he had the privilege of pastoring Edwards Memorial Church in Northampton, MA. These lectures are the fruit of a ministry directed with conviction to the consciences of the young. From the opening page of these lectures the reader is addressed in such a personal way that he cannot but hear the words for himself. Not only should these be read by and to children, but every pastor and Sunday School teacher should read it and learn the delicate art of speaking to children. This was a best seller in the middle of the 19th century, but it has been buried for more than 125 years. It is high time Todd was able to speak again for the cause of God and truth. |
