Enterprise and Culture is a uniquely wide-ranging, insightful and well-informed critical evaluation of the economic and social project of creating an enterprise culture. Colin Gray argues that the failure of small enterprise policy is not just a question of economics, but is also caused by psychological and cultural factors. The book demonstrates that the individualism at the centre of enterprise culture policies is, itself, the main impediment to the successful growth and development of small enterprises.

Micro and small enterprises (MSEs) have been recognised as a major contemporary source of employment and income in a growing number of developing countries. Yet, relatively little is known about the characteristics and patterns of change in these enterprises. This volume examines the dynamics of MSEs in the development process. Drawing on a set of surveys conducted in 12 countries in Africa and Latin America the authors map the patterns of change in MSEs in the developing world. Subjects covered include: significance of new start and closure rates of MSEs; factors involved in expansion rates and growth patterns of MSEs; and the role of gender in MSEs revolution. The text also develops a four-fold characterization of MSEs, from which follows a reflection in the problems faced by and the diverse needs of MSEs. The authors conclude by drawing important lessons for donors and implementing agencies, based on the need to tailor policy to the varying contributions to development and needs of different MSEs. In its presentation of real-life examples and its suggestions for improving development assistance efforts, this volume should be welcome by students and researchers in development eco

This volume presents detailed analyses of the role and significance of Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the economies of East Asia. Various aspects of SME operations are studied, including: * the role and significance of networking in the conduct of business * the contribution of culture to business acumen and entrepreneurialism * human resource development constraints and issues * technology transfer processes * the utilisation and application of information technology by SMEs * the impact of electronic commerce * the policy framework needed to stimulate the growth of the SME sector. A common framework is adopted between the different studies, enabling substantive lessons to be derived and policy measures to be identified. The Role of SMEs in National Economies in East Asia will be of interest to academics and researchers of industrial organisation, Asian economics and Asian studies as well as policymakers concerned with SME growth in the area.
Identifying opportunities is essential to successful entrepreneurial activity; but good opportunities may be missed if entrepreneurs fail to understand when and where to search for them, or appreciate the significance of timing and place in their search. This book identifies and addresses three problems which face aspiring entrepreneurs. The first is finding a promising idea to exploit; the second is to know when to stop searching, or pursue a more promising search; and the third is to understand how the entrepreneur can locate him or herself in time and space to most economically locate a discovery. As well as developing original theories to solve these problems, this book offers practical solutions, which aspiring entrepreneurs can learn and implement through theory-based activities, giving them an opportunity to practice while gaining an understanding of both why and how these approaches work. Showing how timing becomes more salient than time, and place more important than space, this book combines theoretical and practical guidance which will be of great interest to entrepreneurship researchers, educators, students and aspiring entrepreneurs.
First published in 1999, the overall aim of the book is to provide a comprehensive critical guide to the theory and practice of residential care. This is achieved by analysing the history and development of residential child care, examining the current legislative framework and analysing research. The volume has been written against the background of a crisis of confidence in residential child care. The system is often seen as facing perpetual problems of abuse, lack of control and crime. This book seeks to both understand and respond to this challenging situation. Understanding Residential Child Care commences by providing historical and theoretical perspectives. Having provided this analysis the authors move on to examine the empowerment of young people, the framework provided by the Children Act, the role of the manager, the importance of supporting and supervising staff, abuse in care and the experience of leaving care. The book concludes with a chapter suggesting a way forward for residential child care. The core concept explored and applied throughout the book is that of empowerment. It is suggested that this concept can act as an organising framework for re-casting residential child care in a positive manner, so that a quality environment can be provided which can effectively protect and promote the best interests of the child.

The microenterprise strategy --helping people start small businesses --has generated attention among policymakers and the media as a way to create jobs and help lift people out of poverty. Through extensive interviews and case studies of five diverse microenterprise programs in different U.S. regions, Lisa J. Servon examines the potential and limits of these programs. In the late 1980s, the microenterprise strategy came to the United States from less-developed countries such as Bangladesh, where the Grameen Bank flourishes. Since then over 200 programs have opened their doors in nearly every state. This book identifies the current discourse on microenterprises, discusses how this approach represents a departure from traditional economic development and social welfare strategies, and examines the wide range of results. Boot "strap Capital tel"ls the story of both the programs and the people who use them. One program, Women's Initiative, targets very low income women in the San Francisco Bay Area and requires all clients to undergo three months of training before they can apply for a loan. Some of the participants are true entrepreneurs; others pursue self-employment because the mainstream economy has failed them. Servon finds that microenterprise programs combat the problem of persistent poverty by serving a broad socioeconomic group and by focusing on the goals of empowerment, economic literacy, and community organization. She shows that microenterprise programs do more to help those who exist at the margins of the mainstream economy than those who are completely cut off from it. She calls for a rethinking of expectations for this strategy, based on the experience of programs and entrepreneurs in this country. This book provides the basis for reframing policy support for these programs.
Political and financial upheaval is not a new phenomenon - from the tulip bulb bubble in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century to Black Monday in 1987, businesses throughout history have worked to adapt and cope. However, today's climate is even more fraught with crises, raising the levels of concern for business, society, and governments. It especially poses a challenge for small businesses, who have to learn to cope with this increasingly turbulent environment, dealing with the difficulties and taking advantage of the new opportunities that turbulence can provide. Understanding how resilience capabilities can be developed to promote sustainable business is imperative. This book provides a new paradigm for conceptualizing resilience capabilities and advances current understanding both theoretically and practically in real-world business settings. Examining the processes of resilience during different phases of crisis reveals why businesses either fail, or outperform their counterparts during times of turbulence. Based on in-depth empirical research, researchers and advanced students in small business, strategic management and risk management will find this an invaluable guide to organizational resilience.
Dependent self-employment is widely perceived as a rapidly growing form of precarious work conducted by marginalised lower-skilled workers subcontracted by large corporations. Unpacking a comprehensive survey of 35 European countries, Colin C. Williams and Ioana Alexandra Horodnic map the lived realities of the distribution and characteristics of dependent self-employment to challenge this broad and erroneous perception. Featuring rigorous empirical research, Dependent Self-Employment moves beyond the reliance on anecdotal evidence to fill in gaping lacunae in our understanding of employment. Reporting on the European Working Conditions Survey of 2015, this impressive book provides a crucial contribution to our understanding of dependent self-employment in the 21st century, challenging not only academic perceptions, but also depictions of work in the media and political discourse. The authors expertly navigate the 'grey zone' of defining dependent self-employment, embracing the spectrum of employment relationships and outlining the limits to the rights and authority of the dependently self-employed. Bold and comprehensive, this timely book offers critical insight for researchers at all levels exploring the nature and distribution of employment in Europe. Given the current public debates on the platform economy, this book will also prove useful for practitioners and policy-makers in labour inspectorates, tax administrations and social security institutions worldwide. |
