Social Work Treatment - Interlocking Theoretical Approaches (Hardcover, 5th Revised edition): Francis J. Turner Social Work Treatment - Interlocking Theoretical Approaches (Hardcover, 5th Revised edition)
Francis J. Turner
R1,081 Discovery Miles 10 810 Ships in 4 - 6 working days

First published in 1974, Social Work Treatment remains the most popular and trusted compendium of theories available to social work students and practitioners. It explores the full range of theoretical approaches that drive social work treatment and knowledge development, from psychoanalysis to crisis intervention. This treasure trove of practice knowledge equips professionals with a broad array of theoretical approaches, each of which shine a spotlight on a different aspect of the human condition. Emphasizing the importance of a broad-based theoretical approach to practice, it helps the reader avoid the pitfalls of becoming overly identified with a narrow focus that limits their understanding of clients and their contexts. This sweeping overview of the field untangles the increasingly complex problems, ideologies, and value sets that define contemporary social work practice. The result is an essential A-to-Z reference that charts the full range of theoretical approaches available to social workers regardless of their setting or specialty.

Social Policy and Human Development in Zambia (PB) (Paperback, 2nd Revised ed.): Ndangwa Noyoo Social Policy and Human Development in Zambia (PB) (Paperback, 2nd Revised ed.)
Ndangwa Noyoo
R795 Discovery Miles 7 950 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Social Policy And Human Development In Zambia discusses social policy and human development endeavours in Zambia, including the various societal forces that converged on the country in both the pre-colonial and colonial periods and which later influenced post-colonial social policy initiatives. The pre-colonial era epitomised indigenous forms of social protection that safeguarded the well-being of Africans. Colonial rule, which was foreign in orientation, was geared towards meeting the needs of a small European settler population through social policy programmes. Most of the discussions in the book unfold in the setting of a post-colonial society. The central thesis of the book is that social policy and human development in Zambia are inextricably bound up with the political and economic forces in the country and that they constantly reinforce each other. Politics is taken as an important variable that legitimises the role of politicians and policy-makers in determining the development path of the country. Thus, their efficacy, lack of depth or ineptitude will be translated into the way public policies, including social policy, are formulated and implemented. Given the normative nature of social policy, it is argued that ideology plays a critical role in both its formulation and execution. This argument is brought home by showing how the socialist government in Zambia during the 1960s and 1970s relied upon ideology to marshal social policy towards the goal of national development. Based on the analyses of different political eras in the country the book also argues that the economy is the central pillar in the implementation of social policy and the provision of social services. ...................................................... Ndangwa Noyoo holds a Ph.D in Social Development from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa and an M.phil in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge. He has worked as a Senior Researcher at the University of Johannesburg and was also a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow with the Fondation Maison des sciences de l'homme (MSH), Paris, France. He has held the positions of Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of the Department of Social Work in the School of Human and Community Development, University of the Witwatersrand. He is currently a Senior Social Policy Specialist at the National Department of Social Development Tshwane, South Africa. He has published on various socio-economic and political issues, especially in the context of Zambia and Africa.

Rethinking Truth (Paperback, 2nd ed): Philip Higgs, Jane Smith Rethinking Truth (Paperback, 2nd ed)
Philip Higgs, Jane Smith
R397 Discovery Miles 3 970 Ships in 4 - 6 working days

What is truth? Can it be discovered objectively, as science claims? Or is truth a created, highly contested and changing entity, lasting but a moment?

Is there more than one truth? Do we pursue truth or does it pursue us? Why have people sacrificed their lives for it? What is it about truth that can elicit such reactions?

In Rethinking Truth, the authors reflect on the philosophies of:

  • Logical empiricism and empiricism
  • Critical rationalism
  • Critical theory
  • Existentialism
  • Systems theory
  • Feminism
  • African philosophy
  • Hermeneutics
  • Postmodernism
  • Nihilism
In this accessible text, the authors examine the concept of truth as propounded by these philosophies, as well as their practical applications, then go on to give their own responses to the issues raised. Finally, readers are asked to reflect critically on what truth means to them.

Rethinking Truth builds on the theories covered in Rethinking Our World and for this reason, it is more suitable for senior students in the human and social sciences. It should also appeal to a general readership seeking a greater understanding of the arguments in the major philosophies.

R730 R650 Discovery Miles 6 500 Save R80 (11%) In Stock

This book asks how governments in Africa can use evidence to improve their policies and programmes, and ultimately, to achieve positive change for their citizens.

Looking at different evidence sources across a range of contexts, the book brings policy makers and researchers together to uncover what does and doesn't work and why. Case studies are drawn from five countries and the ECOWAS (west African) region, and a range of sectors from education, wildlife, sanitation, through to government procurement processes. The book is supported by a range of policy briefs and videos intended to be both practical and critically rigorous. It uses evidence sources such as evaluations, research synthesis and citizen engagement to show how these cases succeeded in informing policy and practice.

The voices of policy makers are key to the book, ensuring that the examples deployed are useful to practitioners and researchers alike. This innovative book will be perfect for policy makers, practitioners in government and civil society, and researchers and academics with an interest in how evidence can be used to support policy making in Africa.

Ekurhuleni - The Making Of An Urban Region (Paperback): Phil Bonner, Noor Nieftagodien Ekurhuleni - The Making Of An Urban Region (Paperback)
Phil Bonner, Noor Nieftagodien
R325 Discovery Miles 3 250 Ships in 4 - 6 working days

Ekurhuleni - The Making of an Urban Region is the first academic work to provide an historical account and explanation of the development of this extended region to the east of Johannesburg since its origins at the end of the nineteenth century.

From the time of the discovery of gold and coal until the turn of the twenty-first century, the region comprised a number of distinctive towns, all with their own histories. In 2000, these towns were amalgamated into a single metropolitan area, but, unlike its counterparts across the country, it does not cohere around a single identity.

Drawing on a significant body of academic work as well as original research by the authors, the book traces and examines some of the salient historical strands that constituted what was formerly known as the East Rand and suggests that, notwithstanding important differences between towns and the racial fragmentation generated by apartheid, the region’s history contains significant common features.

Arguably, its centrality as a major mining area and then as the country’s engineering heartland gave Ekurhuleni an overarching distinctive economic character.
