Cognition and Figurative Language (Hardcover): Richard P. Honeck, Robert R. Hoffman Cognition and Figurative Language (Hardcover)
Richard P. Honeck, Robert R. Hoffman
R4,027 Discovery Miles 40 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1980, this is a book about the psychology of figurative language. It is however, eclectic and therefore should be of interest to professionals and students in education, linguistics, philosophy, sociolinguistics, and other concerned with meaning and cognition. The editors felt there was a pressing need to bring together the growing empirical efforts of this topic. In a sense, recognition of the theoretical importance of figurative language symbolized the transition from the psycholinguistics of the 1960s to that of the late 1970s, that is from a linguistic semantics to a more comprehensive psychological semantics with a healthy respect for context, inference, world knowledge, and above all creative imagination. The organization of the volume reflects the more basic, general concerns with cognition - from historical and philosophical background, through problems of mental representation and semantic theory, to developmental trends, and to applications in problem solving.

Social Theory and the Urban Question (Hardcover, New Ed): Peter Saunders Social Theory and the Urban Question (Hardcover, New Ed)
Peter Saunders
R6,533 Discovery Miles 65 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Social Theory and the Urban Question offers a guide to, and a critical evaluation of key themes in contemporary urban social theory, as well as a re-examination of more traditional approaches in the light of recent developments and criticism. Dr. Saunders discusses current theoretical positions in the context of the work of Marx, Weber and Durkheim. He suggests that later writers have often misunderstood or ignored the arguments of these 'founding fathers' of the urban question. Dr. Saunders uses his final chapter to apply the lessons learned from a review of their work in order to develop a new framework for urban social and political analysis. This book was first published in 1981.

Evidence-Based Treatments for Alcohol and Drug Abuse - A Practitioner's Guide to Theory, Methods, and Practice... Evidence-Based Treatments for Alcohol and Drug Abuse - A Practitioner's Guide to Theory, Methods, and Practice (Hardcover)
Paul M. G Emmelkamp, Ellen Vedel
R3,990 Discovery Miles 39 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Research in the past decade has shown that substance abuse and substance dependence are treatable. The field has witnessed the introduction of evidence-based psychological and specific pharmacological treatments. Unfortunately, many of the empirical supported therapies for addictions are still not widely applied by practitioners. The third volume in the "Practical Clinical Guidebooks Series (PCG), Evidence-Based Treatment in Substance Abuse "and Dependence would encompass the developments in the field over the last decade, blending theory, techniques and clinical flexibility. The book will provide case illustrations on assessment as well as therapy, and will be suitable for practitioners and students training in clinical and counseling psychology, psychiatry, social work and related fields.
The book would define the characteristics, classification, and prevalence of substance use disorders, and provide the clinician with practical guidelines applicable across a variety of treatment settings and patient groups. Drawing on the recent research in the field, the authors will provide the practicing clinician and student with an up-to-date understanding of the epidemiology, etiology, course and prognosis of substance abuse disorders that would be relevant to clinical practice. In addition to describing phenomenology and etiology, the book provides a comprehensive guide to the assessment and treatment of DSM-IV-TR substance abuse disorders (SUDs), including abuse and dependence of alcohol, stimulants, opiates, hallucinogens, cannabis/marijuana, sedative, and party drugs. Illustrative case histories will help the reader to understand the phenomenology and assessment of SUDs. Lastly, thepresentation of empirically-based therapeutic approaches will help the clinician to decide with treatment will match his/her patient's needs.

Language Disorders From a Developmental Perspective - Essays in Honor of Robin S. Chapman (Hardcover): Rhea Paul Language Disorders From a Developmental Perspective - Essays in Honor of Robin S. Chapman (Hardcover)
Rhea Paul
R4,161 Discovery Miles 41 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The last 25 years have witnessed an explosion of research at the intersection of typical language development and child language disorders. A pioneer in bringing these fields of study together is Robin S. Chapman, Emerita, University of Wisconsin. This contributed volume honors her with chapters written by former students and colleagues, who track in their own research the theme of psycholinguistic contributions to our understanding of the nature and remediation of child language disorders.
In this volume, such renowned researchers in child language development as Dorothy Bishop, Judith Johnston, Ray Kent, among others, discuss their research in certain populations in the context of the significance of, limits of, and alternatives to Robin Chapman's developmental interactionist perspective. Studies of disordered language in Down's Syndrome and Specific Language Impairment, in particular, attribute much progress in our understanding of the pragmatic and comprehension skills inthese populations to the developmental perspective.
"Language Disorders From a Developmental Perspective" opens with a reprint of Robin Chapman's seminal 2001 article from "The Journal of Child Psychiatry and Psychology," It concludes with a new chapter from Dr. Chapman summarizing what we know and what we don't know about language disorders within the developmental framework, and pointing to future areas of research and intervention.
Clinicians as well as scholars will benefit from this book, as will students in programs of developmental psycholinguistics, child language disorders, and learning disabilities.

Implementing Evidence-Based Practices for Treatment of Alcohol And Drug Disorders (Hardcover): Dennis McCarty, Eldon Edmundson,... Implementing Evidence-Based Practices for Treatment of Alcohol And Drug Disorders (Hardcover)
Dennis McCarty, Eldon Edmundson, Jr.
R823 Discovery Miles 8 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Implementing Evidence-Based Practices for Treatment of Alcohol and Drug Disorders" provides managers and clinicians with results from Practice Improvement Collaboratives (PIC) that demonstrate how substance abuse treatment can be improved by increasing the exchange of knowledge between community-based service providers and the research community. The book examines improvement collaboratives and mentoring strategies for adopting and using evidence-based practices. Contributors address how to determine the best treatment processes to serve clients, how to deal with the hurdles faced in preparing and training counsellors, and how to affect the needed changes in agency activities. This unique professional resource responds to an Institute of Medicine report that found a substantial disconnect between research and practice in treatment for drug and alcohol dependence. Focusing on how to make the changes necessary to support the adoption and use of evidence-based practices, the book documents the activities of four sites to illustrate how investigators and treatment practitioners worked together to implement evidence-based practices. Contributors examine the development and early implementation of Practice Improvement Collaboratives, the investigator-provider-policymaker model, Motivational Enhancement Therapy, the use of Opinion Leaders in training, and targeted strategies that take into account the differences in clinician demographics and training. "Implementing Evidence-Based Practices for Treatment of Alcohol and Drug Disorders" is an essential tool for alcohol and drug counsellors, directors of alcohol and drug treatment clinics, and instructors in counsellor training and academic programs.

The Self Psychology of Addiction and Its Treatment - Narcissus in Wonderland (Hardcover): Richard B. Ulman, Harry Paul The Self Psychology of Addiction and Its Treatment - Narcissus in Wonderland (Hardcover)
Richard B. Ulman, Harry Paul
R4,029 Discovery Miles 40 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Until recently, psychoanalysis has failed - on either a theoretical or clinical level - to keep pace with the significant changes in the type of patient seeking psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy. This book provides new ideas - on both a theoretical and clinical level - to fill the void left by the therapeutic collapse en route to contemporary psychotherapy.
It presents an evolved self-psychological model of addiction, including emphasis on clinical approaches, to treat challenging narcissistic patients with major forms of addiction. This is done via an in-depth study of the state of psychoanalysis and an introduction to the model and its place within the therapy of addicted patients. Cases are used to represent and illustrate analytic therapy with the five major forms of addiction.

Bismarck: The White Revolutionary - Volume 2 1871 - 1898 (Hardcover): Lothar Gall Bismarck: The White Revolutionary - Volume 2 1871 - 1898 (Hardcover)
Lothar Gall; Translated by J. A Underwood
R3,244 Discovery Miles 32 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in English in 1986, these volumes are far more than the story of the life of a powerful statesman. The name Bismarck sums up the entire political, social, economic and intellectual development of central Europe in the second half of the 19th Century and the internal and external shape that Germany then assumed. This book analyses how much of this was Bismarck's personal achievement or whether he was the man who put the nation on the disastrously wrong course that reached its fateful culmination in 1933? It examines whether Bismarck's success was precisely because he implemented policies for which the time was ripe and did so in ways that were in harmony with the historical evolution of central Europe.

The Neurobiology of Learning - Perspectives From Second Language Acquisition (Paperback): John H Schumann, Sheila E. Crowell,... The Neurobiology of Learning - Perspectives From Second Language Acquisition (Paperback)
John H Schumann, Sheila E. Crowell, Nancy E. Jones, Namhee Lee, Sara Ann Schuchert
R1,710 Discovery Miles 17 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book constitutes a timely contribution to the existing literature by presenting a relatively comprehensive, neurobiological account of certain aspects of second language acquisition. It represents the collaborative efforts of members of the Neurobiology of Language Research Group in the Applied Linguistics and TESL Department at UCLA. Members of the group are trained in neurobiology and then use this knowledge to develop biological accounts of various aspects of applied linguistics.
The volume avoids the corticocentric bias that characterizes many brain-language publications--both cortical and subcortical structures receive their appropriate attention. In addition, it demonstrates that enough is presently known about the brain to inform our conceptualizations of how humans acquire second languages, thus, it provides a refreshingly novel, highly integrative contribution to the (second) language acquisition literature.
The goal of the research program was based on the need to drawmore links between the neurobiological mechanisms and second language acquisition. As such, the book promotes a neurobiology of language that starts with the brain and moves to behavior. The fundamental insights presented should guide second language acquisition researchers for years to come.

An Introduction to the Science of Phonetics (Paperback): Nigel Hewlett, Janet Mackenzie Beck An Introduction to the Science of Phonetics (Paperback)
Nigel Hewlett, Janet Mackenzie Beck
R1,519 Discovery Miles 15 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book is designed as an introduction to the scientific study of speech. No prior knowledge of phonetics is assumed. As far as mathematical knowlege is concerned, all that is assumed is a knowledge of simple arithmetic and as far as possible concepts are dealt with on an intuitive rather than mathematical level. The anatomical material is all fully explained and illustrated. The book is arranged in four parts. Part 1, Basic Principles, provides an introduction to established phonetic theory and to the principles of phonetic analysis and description, including phonetic transcription. Part 2, Acoustic Phonetics, considers the physical nature of speech sounds as they pass through the air between speaker and hearer. It includes sections on temporal measurement, fundamental frequency, spectra and spectrograms. Part 3, Auditory Phonetics, covers the anatomy of the ear and the perception of loudness, pitch and quality. The final part, Part 4, covers the articulatory production of speech, and shows how experimentaltechniques and tools can enhance our understanding of the complexities of speech production.
Though the audience for this book is mainly students and professors in the Speech Sciences, it will also be valuable to any students studying hearing science and acoustics. The book is well supported with figures, tables, and practice boxes with experiments.

Embodiment and Eating Disorders - Theory, Research, Prevention, and Treatment (Hardcover): Hillary L. Mcbride, Janelle L. Kwee Embodiment and Eating Disorders - Theory, Research, Prevention, and Treatment (Hardcover)
Hillary L. Mcbride, Janelle L. Kwee
R4,468 Discovery Miles 44 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is an insightful and essential new volume for academics and professionals interested in the lived experience of those who struggle with disordered eating. Embodiment and Eating Disorders situates the complicated - and increasingly prevalent - topic of disordered eating at the crossroads of many academic disciplines, articulating a notion of embodied selfhood that rejects the separation of mind and body and calls for a feminist, existential, and sociopolitically aware approach to eating disorder treatment. Experts from a variety of backgrounds and specializations examine theories of embodiment, current empirical research, and practical examples and strategies for prevention and treatment.

Law, Drugs and the Making of Addiction - Just Habits (Hardcover): Kate Seear Law, Drugs and the Making of Addiction - Just Habits (Hardcover)
Kate Seear
R3,536 Discovery Miles 35 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book considers how largely accepted 'legal truths' about drugs and addiction are made and sustained through practices of lawyering. Lawyers play a vital and largely underappreciated role in constituting legal certainties about substances and 'addiction', including links between alcohol and other drugs, and phenomena such as family violence. Such practices exacerbate, sustain and stabilise 'addicted' realities, with a range of implications - many of them seemingly unjust - for people who use alcohol and other drugs. This book explores these issues, drawing upon data collected for a major international study on alcohol and other drugs in the law, including interviews with lawyers, magistrates and judges; analyses of case law; and legislation. Focussing on an array of legal practices, including processes of law-making, human rights deliberations, advocacy and negotiation strategies, and the sentencing of offenders, and buttressed by overarching analyses of the ethics and politics of such practices, the book looks at how alcohol and other drug 'addiction' emerges and is concretised through the everyday work lawyers and decision makers do. Foregrounding 'practices', the book also shows that law is more fragile than we might assume. It concludes by presenting a blueprint for how lawyers can rethink their advocacy practices in light of this fragility and the opportunities it presents for remaking law and the subjects and objects shaped by it. This ground-breaking book will be of interest not only to those studying and working within the field of alcohol and drug addiction but also to lawyers and judges practising in this area and to scholars in a range of disciplines, including law, science and technology studies, sociology, gender studies and cultural studies

Katherine Verdolini, Clark A Rosen, Ryan C Branski
R2,258 Discovery Miles 22 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

To date, there are 300 disorders associated with voice, but until now there has never been a published reference manual that classifies these disorders. Borrowing from the successful organization schema of the American Psychiatric Association' s "Diagnostic Statistical Manual" (DSM), the" Classification Manual for Voice Disorders-I "provides the framework for classifying voice disorders using the following criteria for each disorder: essential and associated features; vocal impairment; clinical history and demographic profile; course and complications; medical and voice differential diagnosis; and severity criteria.
" "
"Classification Manual for Voice Disorders-I" is a project of ASHA' s Special Interest Division 3, Voice and Voice Disorders (DIV 3), originally directed by contributing authors Moya Andrews, Diane Bless, Daniel Boone, Janina Casper, Leslie Glaze, Mike Karnell, Christy Ludlow, and Joe Stemple. The text was edited over a period of several years by the authoritative group of voice disorders professionals, including Katherine Verdolini, Clark Rosen, and Ryan Branski. This version represents the fields of speech-language pathology, voice science, and otolaryngology.
"CMVD-I" lists most conditions that may negatively affect the ability to produce voice, based on the most current knowledge. These conditions comprise 30 structural pathologies, 25 neurological disorders, 20 aerodigestive conditions, 13 psychological disturbances, 15 systemic diseases, four inflammatory processes, four traumatic conditions, and five miscellaneous voice disorders.
"CMVD-I "is a must-have resource for professionals who specializein voice disorders, especially speech-language pathologists and otolaryngologists. The handy organization of this reference makes it a convenient and accessible resource for voice coaches and teachers of singing. It will also be invaluable as a textbook in master' s-level communication sciences programs throughout the world.
Proceeds received by Division 3 will be used to support the mission of Special Interest Division 3, which provides continuing education and networking opportunities to promote leadership and advocacy for voice issues from professional, clinical, educational, and scientific perspectives.

When Words Betray Us - Language, the Brain, and Aphasia (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Sheila E. Blumstein When Words Betray Us - Language, the Brain, and Aphasia (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Sheila E. Blumstein
R1,262 R991 Discovery Miles 9 910 Save R271 (21%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a journey into how language is put together for speaking and understanding and how it can come apart when there is injury to the brain. The goal is to provide a window into language and the brain through the lens of aphasia, a speech and language disorder resulting from brain injury in adults. This book answers the question of how the brain analyzes the pieces of language, its sounds, words, meaning, and ultimately puts them together into a unitary whole. While its major focus is on clinical, experimental, and theoretical approaches to language deficits in aphasia, it integrates this work with recent technological advances in neuroimaging to provide a state-of-the-art portrayal of language and brain function. It also shows how current computational models that share properties with those of neurons allow for a common framework to explain how the brain processes language and its parts and how it breaks down according to these principles. Consideration will also be given to whether language can recover after brain injury or when areas of the brain recruited for speaking, understanding, or reading are deprived of input, as seen with people who are deaf or blind. No prior knowledge of linguistics, psychology, computer science, or neuroscience is assumed. The informal style of this book makes it accessible to anyone with an interest in the complexity and beauty of language and who wants to understand how it is put together, how it comes apart, and how language maps on to the brain.

Counseling and Therapy With Clients Who Abuse Alcohol or Other Drugs - An Integrative Approach (Paperback): Cynthia E.... Counseling and Therapy With Clients Who Abuse Alcohol or Other Drugs - An Integrative Approach (Paperback)
Cynthia E. Glidden-Tracey
R1,393 Discovery Miles 13 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Every day, huge numbers of people use drugs or alcohol for recreation, medication, celebration, stress management, social lubrication, or escape. The abuse of psychoactive chemicals touches individual lives in countless ways, and clients frequently hint in therapy sessions at problems related to substance misuse. But historically, substance abuse treatment has been regarded as a separate specialty, for which students and trainees often prepare along tracks different from those leading to licensing or certification as psychotherapists. Few non-specialists feel completely competent and willing to grapple closely with the issues these clients present, in spite of the fact that such problems are quite frequent among client populations.
In this book, Cynthia Glidden-Tracey lays out an integrated, holistic, and effective approach to clients' inevitably intertwined problems, which encourages all practitioners to develop skills for detecting, assessing, and addressing substance use whenever concerns about it emerge in the course of therapy. She describes the frequent co-occurrence of substance misuse and other mental health problems, reviews therapy models and current professional questions, and empowers practitioners with the latest scientific knowledge about the causes and effective treatment of addictions. Throughout, her points are grounded in rich clinical examples.

How LEGO (R)-Based Therapy for Autism Works - Landing on My Planet (Paperback): Daniel B. LeGoff How LEGO (R)-Based Therapy for Autism Works - Landing on My Planet (Paperback)
Daniel B. LeGoff
R652 Discovery Miles 6 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"You know, Dr. Dan, that kid is from my planet." With in-depth descriptions of LEGO (R)-based therapy in action, this book explains how and why it helps to promote the development of social skills for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and related conditions. Written by Daniel B. LeGoff, who pioneered the approach, this book comprises a series of case histories of children who participated in LEGO (R) therapy. It traces the development of the evidence-based approach, shares the clinical insights gained along the way and highlights the principles which should be at the core of all effective treatment and educational strategies for children with ASDs. The case histories have real practical value for those working with children with ASDs and also help to demonstrate the subtleties of the adult facilitation role for professionals running sessions.

Phonological Encoding and Monitoring in Normal and Pathological Speech (Hardcover, New): Robert J. Hartsuiker, Roelien... Phonological Encoding and Monitoring in Normal and Pathological Speech (Hardcover, New)
Robert J. Hartsuiker, Roelien Bastiaanse, Albert Postma, Frank Wijnen
R4,159 Discovery Miles 41 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book reports recent research on mechanisms of normal formulation and control in speaking and in language disorders such as stuttering, aphasia, and verbal dyspraxia. The theoretical claim is that such disorders result from (1) deficits in a component of the language production system and (2) interactions between this component and the system that "monitors" for errors and undertakes corrective behavior. More in particular, the book focuses on phonological encoding in speech (the construction of a phonetic plan for the utterance), on verbal self-monitoring (checking for correctness and initiating corrective action if necessary), and on interactions between these processes.
The first part of the book deals with phonological encoding. The architecture of the phonological encoding system is described, with regard to both normal and patholgical (conduction aphasia, stuttering, developmental dyspraxia) production. Both in normal and in pathological speech, there are monitoring processes thatcontrol speech. These control mechanisms for detecting and correcting these errors are discussed.
The second part of the book outlines the architecture of monitoring, both from an empirical and a modelling approach. subsquent chapters deal with language dysfunction, either as a disturbance in monitoring itself or as the result of interactions between monitoring and phonologiclal encoding.

Using Space: Critical Geographies of Drugs and Alcohol (Paperback): Christopher M. Moreno, Robert Wilton Using Space: Critical Geographies of Drugs and Alcohol (Paperback)
Christopher M. Moreno, Robert Wilton
R1,054 Discovery Miles 10 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The consumption of drugs and alcohol, and the pleasures and problems arising from this consumption, can be understood as embedded and constitutive elements of social, family, and recreational life. At the same time, they are key sites of intervention for a broad array of state and non-state actors focused on regulation, treatment, and recovery. This edited volume showcases current research on the complex social and cultural geographies of drugs and alcohol. Taking an avowedly critical approach, the authors draw from a variety of theoretical traditions to explore the socially and spatially embedded nature of alcohol and drug consumption, regulation and treatment, and the ways in which these give rise to particular lived experiences, while foreclosing on others. Together, the chapters question taken-for-granted assumptions about the nature of, and motivations for, drug and alcohol use, and pay direct attention to both the intended and unintended consequences of regulation and treatment initiatives. Despite and, in part, because of this critical stance, chapters hold immediate implications for drug and alcohol policy and public health interventions. This book was originally published as a special issue of Social and Cultural Geography.
