"Investigations in Clinical Phonetics and Linguistics" is a sequel
to the eighth meeting of the International Clinical Phonetics and
Linguistics Association, attended by delegates from 26 different
countries. This book reflects the scope of the subject area of
clinical phonetics and linguistics, the balance of input into it
with respect to the different kinds of research being carried on,
and the representation of researchers from different parts of the
world. Its scope includes the application of all levels of

This book constitutes a clear, comprehensive, up-to-date
introduction to the basic principles of psychological and
educational assessment that underlie effective clinical decisions
about childhood language disorders. Rebecca McCauley describes
specific commonly used tools, as well as general approaches ranging
from traditional standardized norm-referenced testing to more
recent ones, such as dynamic and qualitative assessment.
Highlighting special considerations in testing and expected
patterns of performance, she reviews the challenges presented by
children with a variety of problems--specific language impairment,
hearing loss, mental retardation, and autism spectrum disorders.
Three extended case examples illustrate her discussion of each of
these target groups. Her overarching theme is the crucial role of
well-formed questions as fundamental guides to decision making,
independent of approach.
A growing body of literature is suggesting that many children with
language disorders and delays--even those with so-called specific
language impairment--have difficulties in other domains as well. In
this pathbreaking book, the authors draw on more than 40 years of
research and clinical observations of populations ranging from
various groups of children to adults with brain damage to construct
a comprehensive model for the development of the interrelated
skills involved in language performance, and trace the crucial
implications of this model for intervention. Early tactual
feedback, they argue, is more critical for the perceptual/cognitive
organization of experiences that constitutes a foundation for
language development than either visual or auditory input, and the
importance of tactually-anchored nonverbal interaction cannot be
ignored if efforts at treatment are to be successful.
The "VIP" is a user-friendly, point-in-time assessment tool which provides an 'at a glance' vocal profile for the clinician, voice coach and client. It examines the potential impact of a number of specific factors on the voice: general health; vocal history; vocal health; voice care; vocal status; voice genogram; anxiety and stress; social functioning; vocal demand; and environmental factors, and offers an overview of the theory to support this choice. The questions have been carefully designed to elicit easily-recorded information from the client about a range of factors that are known to affect vocal quality. The tick-box answers then translate into the Vocal Impact Profile, a visual presentation of the areas of greatest impact on voice. In addition to offering a point-in-time profile, the "VIP" may also be used as a template for achieving change in a specific area of vulnerability and provide a robust visual reinforcement of that change over time. It is, therefore, helpful as a therapy-monitoring tool and as an evaluation of client awareness, behavioural change and clinical effectiveness. Self-administered by the client, the questionnaire should take approximately ten to fifteen minutes to complete. The clinician or voice coach enters the responses into the computer programme (supplied on downloadable resources) or transfers them manually on to the hard copy thus offering a clear visual representation of the results. Worked examples of the VIP are included, presenting six clients with very different aetiologies and with a range of vocal problems. These examples clearly demonstrate the value of the Profile and its visual impact. As a clinical tool the "VIP" provides a subjective qualitative measure, which may be used as an adjunct to other assessment procedures. In addition, it provides a concrete method of determining and ordering the factors to be targeted in terms of therapy or voice work. Using the "VIP" should shorten the time necessary for completion of case history in the case of a voice therapy client, and, when used by a voice coach, the profile will identify areas for further discussion. The Profile is not time-sensitive so it may be repeated to evaluate client awareness of vocal change and implementation of agreed strategies. The "VIP" provides the clinician or voice coach with an efficient and effective means of auditing the therapy or coaching process and promotes a holistic partnership model of intervention.

Every psychotherapist will be familiar with what it means to experience the hatred and despair of their most vulnerable patients in the midst of a psychotherapy session. Most often these patients will manage to express their feelings verbally, but what about those who never developed the capacity to speak? Or those who are capable of talking, but carry a complex range of unprocessed embodied feelings that cannot be verbally expressed? Some patients must rely on another type of language in order to communicate their dissociative states of mind. Primitive Bodily Communications explores how the 'talking cure' can still work when words fail and the body 'talks.' Non-verbal communication can be thought of as a form of body language and, even though this is a topic not frequently discussed, many practitioners have experienced working with people who communicate through the use of their bodies. The book does not refer to bodily communications as primitive because we see them as inferior to verbal language, but simply because they point to the beginnings of psychological development, to primary ways of being and relating, as well as to enduring aspects of ourselves. The contributors explore the topic of primitive bodily communications in the context of intellectual disability, eating disorders and bodily neglect, focusing on the communicative aspect of bodily expressions within the therapeutic relationship. A wide spectrum of clinical cases illustrates how these patients can reach a state of better physical and emotional containment and, when possible, of verbal communication.
