Megan Yih Chyn A. Kek, Henk Huijser
R3,311 Discovery Miles 33 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this book we respond to a higher education environment that is on the verge of profound changes by imagining an evolving and agile problem-based learning ecology for learning. The goal of doing so is to humanise university education by pursuing innovative approaches to student learning, teaching, curricula, assessment, and professional learning, and to employ interdisciplinary methods that go far beyond institutional walls and include student development and support, curriculum sustainability, research and the scholarship of teaching and learning, as well as administration and leadership. An agile problem-based learning (PBL) ecology for learning deliberately blurs the boundaries between disciplines, between students and teachers, between students and employers, between employers and teachers, between academics and professional staff, between formal and informal learning, and between teaching and research. It is based on the recognition that all of these elements are interconnected and constantly evolving, rather than being discrete and static. Throughout this book, our central argument is that there is no single person who is responsible for educating students. Rather, it is everyone's responsibility - teachers, students, employers, administrators, and wider social networks, inside and outside of the university. Agile PBL is about making connections, rather than erecting barriers. In summary, this book is not about maintaining comfort zones, but rather about becoming comfortable with discomfort. The actual implementation is beyond the scope of this book and we envisage that changing perceptions towards this vision will itself be a mammoth task. However, we believe that the alternative of leaving things as they are would ultimately prove untenable, and more distressingly, would leave a generation of students afraid to think, feel, and act for themselves, let alone being able to face the challenges of the 21st century.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges and opportunities for both teachers and students. In many countries, online teaching was something new, never experienced before. Therefore, everyone had to start from scratch. The articles in this proceeding provide the experiences, challenges, and strategies that L2 teachers and students had during the recent emergency remote teaching. Four main themes were covered: 1) online L2 learning curriculum and materials development, 2) L2 learning and acquisition in a virtual learning environment, 3) online L2 testing, assessment, program evaluation, and 4) teacher and students' critical reflections on online L2 teaching and learning practices. Written by L2 teachers and teacher educators, we dedicate this proceeding to all L2 teachers and teacher educators who continue trying to maintain high-quality L2 education during and post-pandemic.

Matthew J. Jennings

Educational administrators make a sincere effort to develop a curriculum scope and sequence for students. Yet, with few exceptions, educational administrators make no such effort to develop a similar document for the professional learning of teachers. As a result, teachers often are provided with professional learning activities that lack focus and coherence. The content of Transforming Professionals into Experts: A Systematic and Comprehensive Approach to Mid-Career Teacher Development fills this void. Through clear standards, reflective activities, and differentiated evaluation tools, educational administrators will have everything needed to implement a systematic and comprehensive staff development program for mid-career teachers.

Journeys through Childhood Studies - Constructing Identities through Higher Education and the Children's Workforce... Journeys through Childhood Studies - Constructing Identities through Higher Education and the Children's Workforce (Paperback)
Ingrid Richter
R1,242 Discovery Miles 12 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Investigating the experiences of a group of female students as they journey into and through higher education, and into work with and for children, Journeys through Childhood Studies offers a critical analysis of the intersectional influences and effects of social division on experiences of higher education and career trajectories. The book explores the influences of gender, race, and class on the experiences of higher education and the development of professional identities, and whether the professionalisation of work in relation to children and childhood opens up opportunities for career development or narrows the range of choices available to women. Adopting a distinctive qualitative approach to track strategies used by women participants to accommodate the changing terrain of their journeys, this book demonstrates how the women's pathways to university are shaped by factors such as social divisions, friends, family, and school, and their experiences of working with children. Featuring detailed interviews, Journeys through Childhood Studies offers an insightful exploration of the construction and practices of the Children's Workforce. It is a must-read for academics, postgraduate students, and those researching Childhood Studies, professional identities, and experiences of higher education.

Research on Becoming an English Teacher - Through Lacan's Looking Glass (Paperback): Tony Brown, Mike Dore, Christopher... Research on Becoming an English Teacher - Through Lacan's Looking Glass (Paperback)
Tony Brown, Mike Dore, Christopher Hanley
R1,226 Discovery Miles 12 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Research on Becoming an English Teacher considers the process of becoming a teacher from a variety of perspectives, where the ambition is to consider how people can change themselves within that process. By pursuing an approach influenced by the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan, the authors consider practitioner research as an approach to professional and personal development, and how it might be understood as a strategy within both teaching and teacher education. Taking English teaching as the main example, this book explores the processes and discourses that shape the experience of English teaching in schools. Chapters consider the origin and development of English education, practice and theory in English education, the process of becoming a teacher in school-based environments and creating an analytical space for learning narratives in teacher education. This book will be of interest to academics, researchers and post-graduate students in the fields of teacher education, curriculum studies, educational theory and educational psychology.

Pedagogical Equilibrium - The Development of Teachers' Professional Knowledge (Paperback): Jennifer Mansfield Pedagogical Equilibrium - The Development of Teachers' Professional Knowledge (Paperback)
Jennifer Mansfield
R1,242 Discovery Miles 12 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Pedagogical Equilibrium is an innovative reconceptualisation of teachers' professional knowledge development. The book draws on interview data and in-depth analysis of situations, which challenge teachers' sense of pedagogical equilibrium in both primary and secondary school contexts. These moments highlight the complexity of teaching and the valuable personal and professional learning opportunities afforded by experiencing and processing moments which create uncertainty during practice. Mansfield considers a variety of aspects of teaching practice, including content knowledge, organising for teaching, organising for learning, and student attitudes and behaviours. Drawing on detailed examples, a new framework is offered to scaffold teacher thinking around moments in practice which can challenge the sense of equilibrium in the classroom. Pedagogical Equilibrium is a highly valuable resource for educational researchers, teacher educators, current teachers and other educational stakeholders.

Storying the Public Intellectual - Commentaries on the Impact and Influence of the Work of Ivor Goodson (Paperback): Pat Sikes,... Storying the Public Intellectual - Commentaries on the Impact and Influence of the Work of Ivor Goodson (Paperback)
Pat Sikes, Yvonne Novakovic
R1,239 Discovery Miles 12 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Storying the Public Intellectual: Commentaries on the Impact and Influence of the Work of Ivor Goodson offers a critcal commentary on Goodson's work that avoids hagiography whilst recognising the global reach of his scholarship. With contributors from around the world, those who have collaborated with him or those who have taken up his work, the book provides the sort of social and historical contextualising that Goodson has always advocated. The accounts in this collection highlight how Goodson's integration of moral imperatives into strategically responsive scholarship can provide a useful roadmap when negotiating a path through the contemporary academic research landscape. By using his historian's orientation and sensibilities he is able to get to the heart of the logics of schooling. By connecting with other scholars and researchers around the world, he exposes how the global neo-liberal project plays out in particular settings, and so challenges pervasive understandings about the meaning of global - and the power of the neo-liberal project itself. This book is ideal reading for academics, scholars and researchers in the field of education, including those involved in initial and in-service teacher education.

Mary O'Sullivan, Melissa Parker
R1,240 Discovery Miles 12 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book seeks to focus attention on physical education teacher education (PETE) by building the knowledge base and broadening the geographical, theoretical, and innovative writing about PETE, PETE teacher educators, and those who shape and experience PETE. Teacher competence is a major factor in influencing student learning. Teacher educator competence is also a key factor in preparing high-quality teachers for schools. Therefore, there is a high value in focussing on who teacher educators are and which knowledge bases can inform careful program design as well as pedagogical and assessment strategies around the intended processes of teacher learning. Developed around a framework for studying teacher education, insights into two key elements of teacher education are used to structure the content of this book. Five of the six chapters focus on pedagogies of teacher education, while the last chapter explores the lives of an international cohort of teacher educators and their motives for engagement in research. Based on elements presented and those provided in the framework an agenda exploring pressing issues for teacher education is posed. This book was originally published as a special issue of Curriculum Studies in Health and Physical Education.

Jongsung Kim; Nariakira Yoshida, Shotaro Iwata, Hiromi Kawaguchi
R4,216 Discovery Miles 42 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The philosophy of Lesson Study in Japan-teacher ownership, teacher professionalism, student learning-focused dialogue, teacher collaboration, and teacher professional community-has attracted educators and researchers worldwide. However, Lesson Study does not have the same meaning as its original Japanese expression Jugyou Kenkyuu, a combination of two Japanese words-Jugyou meaning instruction or lesson(s) and Kenkyuu meaning study or research. To bridge the gap between Jugyou Kenkyuu and Lesson Study and therefore maximize the potential of Lesson Study in the world, this edited volume provides two "mirrors" for those who wish to reflect on and implement Lesson Study within their own contexts. One section discusses how Lesson Study is utilized in Japanese teacher education and how this system reproduces the very culture of Lesson Study. The other section addresses case studies showcasing Lesson Study implementation in several countries such as the United States, Germany, Norway, Peru, and Uganda and discusses the opportunities and challenges that arise when Lesson Study-based teacher education expands beyond Japan to the rest of the world. This book will appeal to anyone interested in learning about Lesson Study.
