Engineering is mathematics in action. But engineering students do not always see the link between what they learn in mathematics and how this applies to engineering problems. From relatively simple questions, like determining the maximum weight a beam can support to complex projects like mapping out the most efficient electrical flow for a city’s traffic lights, mathematics is essential.
Fire and combustion presents a significant engineering challenge to
mechanical, civil and dedicated fire engineers, as well as
specialists in the process and chemical, safety, buildings and
structural fields. We are reminded of the tragic outcomes of
'untenable' fire disasters such as at King's Cross underground
station or Switzerland's St Gotthard tunnel. In these and many
other cases, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is at the forefront
of active research into unravelling the probable causes of fires
and helping to design structures and systems to ensure that they
are less likely in the future.
Workplace incidents and accidents affect businesses long after the incidents occur. The interruption of business activities and running equipment results in financial loss. Injuries suffered by people damage a business’s image and competitive edge, and demotivate employees. By approaching safety risks in a measured, responsible manner, safety professionals and business owners can mitigate the occurrence of incidents and prevent them from happening in the workplace.

The latest title in the Real World Nursing Survival Guide series, this fun and engaging book makes it easy to review must-know concepts associated with hemodynamic monitoring. Its lighthearted, cartoon-filled approach guides readers through challenging concepts and procedures. The book begins with an overview of five main concepts: cardiac output, stroke volume, preload, afterload, and contractility. It discusses equipment used for specific procedures, followed by discussions of specific aspects of hemodynamic monitoring including cardiac output, intra-arterial, central venous, pulmonary artery, and mixed venous oxygenation. The final chapter focuses on clinical applications with case studies, clinical interventions, and exercises. The unique presentation of content narrows the gap between the knowledge a student learns during nursing school and the wisdom they need to survive in the real world. Material is presented using adult learning principles and various active-learning strategies to engage readers of all ages, backgrounds, and learning styles. A consistent chapter format - using the headings What it is, What you need to know, What you do, and Do you understand? - breaks down information into small segments and facilitates understanding. Special icons for Lifespan Considerations, Cultural Implications, Web Links, Cautions, Monitoring and Initial Treatment help readers quickly identify special content in the chapter. A variety of memory-reinforcing activities such as mnemonic devices, fill-in the blank, matching, word jumbles, true/false, and crossword puzzles promote learning and understanding. Clinical terms and shorthand expressions are highlighted in colored text within parentheses after the explanation, to expose readers to terminology used in the practice setting. Boxed Take Home Points distill years of nursing experience into practical, "real world" advice from the experts. More than 100 NCLEX-style questions, divided by chapter, are included in a section at the end of the book so readers can test their knowledge and review challenging concepts. Full-color illustrations demonstrate key concepts and principles of hemodynamic monitoring, including various complications. Original cartoon-character illustrations and a cartoon camel walk readers through subjects that nursing students have identified as difficult, using a lighthearted approach. Waveforms at the end of each chapter allow readers to practice their interpretation.

This addition to the Essentials series provides a succinct guide for nurses in adult-health clinical settings and fills the need for an easy-to-use clinical reference that delivers a quick-access reference on ways to incorporate wellness into their work, helping to improve patient outcomes, and throughout their daily lives, helping to reduce personal and professional stress and improve their overall wellness. There currently is no clinical reference book that nurses can use for health promotion in general and health promotion for wellness in particular. Having such a reference is especially pertinent to nurses who learned about health promotion in academic nursing programs, but did not learn about health promotion in the broader context of promoting wellness. Since Florence Nightingale, nurses have considered health promotion interventions - particularly patient education - as an essential component of nursing care. Historically, these interventions traditionally focused on physical health concerns, such as nutrition, exercise, and fresh air, and more recently, on immunisations, and screening for disease (e.g., cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease). Because health promotion has expanded to include ""wellness,"" nurses now address issues related to broader aspects, such as stress reduction, body-mind connectedness, and self-responsibility. At the same time that wellness has become an important focus of care, health care providers increasingly are emphasising cost effectiveness and use of advanced technology. As a result of these concurrent trends, nurses experience high levels of job-related stress and have less time to promote patient wellness as an integral part of their care, even though they recognise its importance. In addition, nurses increasingly recognise that job-related pressures negatively affect them personally and they are looking for ways to incorporate wellness in their work and personal experiences.
