Entrepreneurship - A South African Perspective (Paperback, 5th Edition): Cecile Nieuwenhuizen, Thea Tselepis Entrepreneurship - A South African Perspective (Paperback, 5th Edition)
Cecile Nieuwenhuizen, Thea Tselepis
R898 Discovery Miles 8 980 Ships in 11 - 16 working days

Entrepreneurs are the core and essence of any economy. Without entrepreneurs, there would be no business; without business, there would be no government, as there would be nobody to pay taxes to finance it. What distinguishes entrepreneurs from the masses, and even from innovative individuals, is that they act on opportunities and create something new, thereby driving economic evolution. Entrepreneurship – a South African perspective is a guide to becoming a successful entrepreneur. It describes and illustrates new business creation within a South African context: the start-up process, the growth stages and the challenges in the maturity phase of the business.

In this fifth edition, all the chapters have been revised substantially and special attention has been given to South African and other case studies relevant to the context of Africa. More emphasis is placed on the post-modern trends of the business world, such as the prominent role of technology and the social impact of businesses.

Contents include the following:

  • The nature and development of entrepreneurship and the entrepreneur
  • Creativity, innovation and the window of opportunity
  • Developing the business plan
  • Start-up and resources for entrepreneurs
  • Fair trade, competition and consumer protection
  • Legislation and regulations affecting entrepreneurs
  • Financing, growth and buyout of a business
  • The Fourth Industrial Revolution, technology and e-commerce opportunities
  • Family businesses, franchising and corporate entrepreneurship in South Africa

Government And Politics In South Africa - New Dawn? (Paperback, 6th Edition): Chris Landsberg, Suzanne Graham, Marcel Nagar Government And Politics In South Africa - New Dawn? (Paperback, 6th Edition)
Chris Landsberg, Suzanne Graham, Marcel Nagar
R770 Discovery Miles 7 700 Ships in 11 - 16 working days

In 2021, South Africa celebrated 27 years as a democratic state. The number 27 has a symbolic value in the liberation history of the Republic as it reflects the number of years spent in prison by former President Nelson Mandela prior to his release and South Africa’s transition. In 1994 Madiba magic was in full force and many observers reflected on the miraculous birth of the democratic state. In 2018, President Cyril Ramaphosa similarly spoke of a “New Dawn” in South Africa, and drawing on the moral authority and memory of Mandela, pledged to turn the tide in South African governance, in reference to the dark clouds of corruption hanging over the previous, Jacob Zuma, administration. The year 2021 also saw the 25th commemoration of South Africa’s much-celebrated Constitution, lauded for its progressive and transformative nature. However, despite varied attempts by the Ramaphosa administration to instil renewed confidence in the South African leadership, local government elections in 2021 revealed votership that was simply not interested, and diverse actors who were unwilling to support the proclaimed New Dawn, and the call for Thuma Mina! (send me).

This updated edition incorporates the Cyril Ramaphosa administration’s years in office so far. The chapters continue to reflect on the concepts, institutions, structures, policy and theories that characterise the South African governance, policy and political landscapes. They also consider, in part, the global COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on South Africa’s domestic and foreign contexts, and the South African government’s responses to this pandemic.

T. Ngcukaitobi, J. Brickhill, N. Stein
R1,045 R916 Discovery Miles 9 160 Save R129 (12%) Ships in 11 - 15 working days

The Constitutional Law Casebook consists of approximately fifty case extracts from significant judgments handed down by South African courts. The majority of the cases discussed are decisions of the Constitutional Court, although some extracts are from significant decisions of the Supreme Court of Appeal.

The cases are considered under separate themes, for example, separation of powers, equality, property etc. The extract selected from each case traces the development of the principles applicable to each particular category.

An introductory question on the legal issues introduces each case discussion. This is followed by a brief description of the factual background and the legal history of the case. The key legal issues to be determined by the Court are then identified. An extract of the relevant paragraphs of the decision itself follows, tracing the Court’s ratio decidendi in answering the introductory question. The order is quoted as well, where it provides a useful confirmation of the ratio decidendi.

Three to five questions for students follow each case extract. These are intended to spark debate around the issues raised in the judgment, to test comprehension of the decision and to encourage a deeper reflection on these issues. The questions may be used to initiate class discussions, or as essay topics for students.

'Oh Mama, how spiritless, how tame was Edward's manner in reading to us last night I felt for my sister most severely. Yet she bore it with so much composure, she seemed scarcely to notice it. I could hardly keep my seat.'

Spirited and impulsive, Marianne Dashwood is the complete opposite to her controlled and sensible sister, Elinor. When it comes to matters of the heart, Marianne is passionate and romantic and soon falls for the charming, but unreliable Mr Willoughby. Elinor, in contrast, copes stoically with the news that her love, Edward Ferrars is promised to another.

It is through their shared experiences of love that both sisters come to learn that the key to a successful match comes from finding the perfect mixture of rationality and feeling.

Kobus Maree
R733 Discovery Miles 7 330 Ships in 11 - 16 working days

At some point or other in their academic careers, most tertiary-level students will become engaged in the planning and execution of research projects. It is a fundamental part of further education that many students find daunting, which need not be the case. First steps in research uses the most current perspectives in the field both locally and internationally to provide theoretical and practical guidelines on how to conduct and report on research at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

First steps in research brings together the views of academics, theorists, researchers, and practitioners. It presents perspectives and theory on how to facilitate the understanding and application of theories, goals, methods, and strategies.

The book is easy to read and use without diluting the conceptual and terminological complexities of the field. It examines the historical and philosophical underpinnings of qualitative, quantitative, and integrative (integrated) or mixed methods of conducting research, and suggests how these three approaches may be used most appropriately. It also elaborates on the methodological dimensions of action research processes and exemplifies participatory reflection.
