The Social Developmental Construction of Violence and Intergroup Conflict (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Jorge Vala, Sven Waldzus,... The Social Developmental Construction of Violence and Intergroup Conflict (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Jorge Vala, Sven Waldzus, Maria Manuela Calheiros
R3,572 Discovery Miles 35 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book describes how the violent dimension of intergroup relations can be better understood if the interplay between psychological and social-developmental factors is taken into account. Ten unique, innovative and original chapters by international scholars of social and developmental psychology address the way how social reality is constructed as a hierarchical order, and how social norms, beliefs and cognitive-behavioral patterns are learned, shared and repeatedly processed on how to uphold or challenge this social order. The volume covers diverse issues such as the effects (or lack thereof) of power and violent video games on people's thinking and behavior, the acquisition of social norms and attitudes during childhood, minorities' identity management strategies, the role of mothers' educational beliefs and the impact of ideologies. This volume is inspired by the oeuvre of Maria Benedicta Monteiro, emphasizing the psychogenetic and sociogenic diacronies that are too often neglected by the predominantly synchronic paradigm of social psychology. It is therefore an indispensable reading for researchers and advanced students in social, community and developmental psychology, for scientifically interested practitioners working with families, school contexts or intergroup conflict, and for everyone interested in the expanding field of the social developmental approaches to attitudes and behaviour.

Co-operative Industry (Routledge Revivals) (Paperback): Ernest Aves Co-operative Industry (Routledge Revivals) (Paperback)
Ernest Aves
R1,505 Discovery Miles 15 050 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Ernest Aves (1857-1917) was an influential social analyst and civil servant. This title, first published in 1907, during Aves' work for the Board of Trade, investigates the different forms of industrial co-operation within Britain; the fundamental principle of this is stated as "equitable association", leading to increased profitability and the strengthening of industry. Chapters discuss such areas as centralisation, co-operative production and co-operative agriculture. This interesting reissue will be of particular value to students of economics with an interest in co-operative industry and the history of economic thought.

Welfare Beyond the Welfare State - The Employment Relationship in Britain and Germany (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Felix Behling Welfare Beyond the Welfare State - The Employment Relationship in Britain and Germany (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Felix Behling
R3,626 Discovery Miles 36 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines employee welfare in British and German companies from the 19th century through to the present day. Tracing the history of employee welfare, this comparative study reveals new issues beyond the dominant focus on the welfare state, showing that companies are an integral part of welfare systems with surprisingly few differences between the UK and Germany. Maintaining that employee welfare is a key feature of the modern employment relationship, Behling shows how the welfare programme supported industrialisation in the 19th century by cementing the standard employment model of the Fifties and Sixties, as well as how it revolves around corporate social responsibility today. The result is an innovative exploration into the changing nature of employment relationships, contemporary welfare systems, and the co-evolutionary - rather than categorical - development of economic and political institutions. An engaging and well-researched text, this book will hold special appeal to scholars of social policy, welfare politics, as well as anyone interested in the role of the state in people's working lives.

Sociological Perspectives on Labor Markets (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): B. Furaker Sociological Perspectives on Labor Markets (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
B. Furaker
R2,877 Discovery Miles 28 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents conceptual tools and theoretical perspectives that can be used to sociologically analyze labour markets in modern capitalist societies. It makes use of the rich heritage of sociological thinking and draws on the classical work of Marx, Weber and Durkheim as well as structural-functionalist contributions. Contemporary sociological thinking is criticized for its tendency to exaggerate change in labour markets while the need to consider continuity is emphasized. Conceptual tools and perspectives are applied based on concrete phenomena, as the author combines abstract theoretical reasoning with theoretically founded reflections on actual labour market developments.

Bygone Utopias and Farm Protest in the Rural Midwest - Returning Home (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Daniel Jaster Bygone Utopias and Farm Protest in the Rural Midwest - Returning Home (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Daniel Jaster
R3,611 Discovery Miles 36 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores those who long for "bygone utopias," times before rapid, culturally destructive social change stripped individuals of their perceived agency. The case of the wave of foreclosure protests that swept through the rural American Midwest during the 1930s illustrates these themes. These actions embodied a utopian understanding of agrarian society that had largely disappeared by the late 19th century: hundreds to thousands of people fixed public auctions of foreclosed farms, returning owners' property and giving them a second chance to save their farm. Comparisons to later movements, including the National Farmers' Organization and the protests surrounding the 1980s Farm Crisis highlight the importance of culturally catastrophic social change occurring at a breakneck pace in fomenting these types of bygone utopian actions. These activists and movements should cause scholars to re-think what it means to be conservative and how we view conservatism, helping us better understand why we're seeing a contemporary resurgence in nationalist and reactionary movements across the globe.

Balancing Work and Family in a Changing Society - The Fathers' Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Elisabetta Ruspini,... Balancing Work and Family in a Changing Society - The Fathers' Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Elisabetta Ruspini, Isabella Crespi
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Both research and policy on balancing work and family life have tended to focus on mothers' lives. There has been a general lack of comparative research to the complex intersection between old and new forms of masculinity; and between fatherhood, work-life balance, gender relations and children's well-being. As a result, men's fathering roles and their struggle with work-life balance have often been neglected. These cultural challenges should be better theorized within family and social policy research. This volume examines how fathers fulfill their roles both within the family and at work and what institutional support could be of most benefit to them in combining these roles.

Gambling, Work and Leisure (Routledge Revivals) - A Study Across Three Areas (Paperback): David Downes, D.M. Davies, M. E.... Gambling, Work and Leisure (Routledge Revivals) - A Study Across Three Areas (Paperback)
David Downes, D.M. Davies, M. E. David, P. Stone
R1,319 Discovery Miles 13 190 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Since the legalisation of off-course cash betting in 1960, and the rise of varying forms of gambling, the British have come to be known as a nation of gamblers. Until this study was published in 1976, barely any evidence existed against which to assess the claim that gambling has become a major social problem. The authors present data drawn from area surveys carried out in Swansea, Sheffield, Wanstead and Woodford, and explore how well previous sociological theories of gambling agree with their findings, particular in connection with certain aspects of work and leisure. Examining different forms of gambling, including betting, bingo and slot machines, the chapters consider how gambling choices vary between different social groups, and how much time and money is spent on them. With the internet making it easier than ever before top place bets, this title is especially relevant, and provides a systematic basis for an explanation of gambling in relation to social structure.

In the context of multiple political regimes, the turmoil of the Nigerian economy, and major ideological shifts, women have sought to optimize their resources and situations. Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion in Caribbean Organisations and Society - An Exploration of Work, Employment, Education, and... Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion in Caribbean Organisations and Society - An Exploration of Work, Employment, Education, and the Law (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Jacqueline H. Stephenson, Natalie Persadie, Ann Marie Bissessar, Talia Esnard
R2,879 Discovery Miles 28 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on equality, inclusion, and discrimination within the English-speaking Caribbean region, specifically as it relates to employment, education, society, and the law. Though anti-discrimination laws have recently been enacted in the Caribbean, this, in and of itself, neither translates to societal changes nor changes within the organisational context. The authors examine racial diversity in public sector organisations in Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, gender diversity in organisations across the Caribbean region, sexual orientation and its impact on employment, disability and access within organisations, and equality and inclusion within Caribbean institutions of higher education. Further, the book explores the region's equality laws and compares them with legislation from selected developed countries. This interdisciplinary text provides researchers in HRM, organisational behavior, sociology, and public policy with an overview of the types of discrimination prevalent within the Caribbean as well as the varied institutional frameworks in place that encourage equality.

Richard Scase
R4,628 Discovery Miles 46 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Flexibility Paradox - Why Flexible Working Leads to (Self-)Exploitation (Paperback): Heejung Chung The Flexibility Paradox - Why Flexible Working Leads to (Self-)Exploitation (Paperback)
Heejung Chung
R809 Discovery Miles 8 090 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Does flexible working really provide a better work-life balance? Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, flexible working has become the norm for many workers. This volume offers an original examination of flexible working using data from 30 European countries and drawing on studies conducted in Australia, the US and India. Rather than providing a better work-life balance, the book reveals how flexible working can lead to exploitation, which manifests differently for women and men, such as more care responsibilities or increased working hours. Taking a critical stance, this book investigates the potential risks and benefits of flexible working and provides crucial policy recommendations for overcoming the negative consequences.

More gender awareness and openness along all stages of the innovation chain, as well as more research and policy interventions are needed to ensure better use of highly-skilled human capital in knowledge-based economies around the globe.

Medieval Theology of Work - Peter Damian and the Medieval Religious Renewal Movement (Hardcover): P. Ranft Medieval Theology of Work - Peter Damian and the Medieval Religious Renewal Movement (Hardcover)
P. Ranft
R1,530 Discovery Miles 15 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Historians have long noted the intense debates nineteenth and twentieth-century scholars had over the concept of work, but few are aware of the medieval debates over work that set the stage for modern discussions. Indeed, medieval society established the framework within which modern Western ideas about work have grown. It is essential, therefore, that we learn what medieval thinkers had to say on the subject. This study addresses this need by examining the thought of Peter Damian and numerous other religious leaders and groups of the High Middle Ages for evidence of their contributions. The result is a deepening of our historical understanding of the concept of work as well as widening our appreciation of the modern world's debt to medieval society.

Rethinking Development - Marxist Perspectives (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Ronaldo Munck Rethinking Development - Marxist Perspectives (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Ronaldo Munck
R3,890 Discovery Miles 38 900 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Development and underdevelopment are the main determinants of life-chances worldwide, arguably more so than social class. Marxism, as the underlying theory for social revolution, needs to have a clear understanding of the dynamics of development and social progress. Exploring the intersection of Marxism and development, this book looks at Marx's original conception of capitalist development and his later engagement with under-developed Russia. The author also reviews Lenin's early critique of the Russian populists' rejection of capitalism compared with his later analysis of imperialism as a brake on development in the non-European world. The book then considers Rosa Luxemburg, who arguably provides a bridge between these theorists and those that follow with her analysis of imperialism as a necessity for capitalism to incorporate non-capitalist lands. Turning then to the non-European world, the author examines the Latin American dependency theories, the post-development school and the recent indigenous development theories advanced by Andean Marxism. Finally, Munck addresses the relationship between globalization and development. Does this relationship suggest that it has not been capitalism but a lack of capitalism that has led to under-development?

Austerity Policies - Bad Ideas in Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Peter Rushton, Catherine Donovan Austerity Policies - Bad Ideas in Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Peter Rushton, Catherine Donovan
R4,360 Discovery Miles 43 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book takes up the problems of social policy, state intervention and support in the hard times of austerity introduced by the Coalition government 2010-15, and continued under the Conservative government today. At a time when the economy is growing and pay levels finally rising, the necessity for more cuts in public expenditure is fiercely contested. The scope of state services, the levels of support for people in need, and the kinds of organizations that will deliver the services, will all be profoundly affected in coming years. The authors and editors assess some of these consequences visible now in the impact that expenditure cuts and reorganization have had on many areas of social policy, and explore the direction of change in the near future. Austerity Policies evaluates a wide range of changing form of state services and the transformations involving both the recipients and those delivering the services. It considers the past, present and future of austerity as a policy, and the problems affecting particular groups such as offenders, looked after children, and professionals such as social care workers and those engaged with domestic violence. The collection will be of interest to students and scholars of social policy, criminology, sociology, politics and media studies.

Women, Labor Segmentation and Regulation - Varieties of Gender Gaps (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): David Peetz, Georgina Murray Women, Labor Segmentation and Regulation - Varieties of Gender Gaps (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
David Peetz, Georgina Murray
R3,030 Discovery Miles 30 300 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book re-shapes thinking on 'gender gaps'-differences between men and women in their incomes, their employment and their conditions of work. It shows how the interaction between regulation distance and content, labor segmentation and norms helps us understand various aspects of gender gaps. It brings together leading authors from industrial relations, sociology, politics, and feminist economics, who outline the roles the family, state public policy, trade unions and class play in creating gender gaps, and consider the lessons from international comparisons. While many studies have focused on the role of society or organizations, this book also pays attention to the role of occupations in promoting and reinforcing gender gaps, discussing groups such as apparel outworkers, film and video workers, care workers, public-sector professionals like librarians, chief executives, academics, and coal miners. This book will be of interest to practitioners, policy makers, academics and students interested in understanding why inequality between men and women persists today-and what might be done about it.

Industrial Control Over the Socialist Town - Benevolence or Exploitation? (Hardcover, New): Boleslaw Domanski Industrial Control Over the Socialist Town - Benevolence or Exploitation? (Hardcover, New)
Boleslaw Domanski
R1,965 Discovery Miles 19 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The author addresses the neglected issue of the relations between the functioning of powerful state industrial firms and the town under socialism. As they strived for labor force, the manufacturing and mining employers in Central and Eastern Europe became prominent gatekeepers controlling access to scarce goods and services, which reflected a specific labor market segmentation. The distribution of social benefits and burdens they generated enhanced life chances of certain groups by and large at the cost of the underprivileged--women and the elderly in particular. This socialist industry contributed to social injustice and deprivation as well as the reproduction of entrapping spatial settings such as factory colonies and areas reserved for potential expansion.

The study reveals a great diversity of mechanisms of industrial control over and exploitation of socialist towns in Poland. Spatial organization of local activities and facilities exhibited the power of industrial gatekeepers, and in several cases became a mediating element facilitating achievement of the firM's objectives. The residents' sense of place was permeated by the company through its multiple involvement outside the factory gates, which could justify its dominant position and conceal sources of social inequalities and conflicts. The legacy of socialist factory paternalism bears heavily upon post-socialist society, which is evident in anti-egalitarian attitudes and social closure attempts demonstrated by the beneficiaries of the gatekeepers' allocation.

Entrepreneurship and Organizational Change - Managing Innovation and Creative Capabilities (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Vanessa... Entrepreneurship and Organizational Change - Managing Innovation and Creative Capabilities (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Vanessa Ratten
R4,234 Discovery Miles 42 340 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Change is a part of any organization, but in order to compete in the globally connected business environment, organizations also need to incorporate an entrepreneurial focus. This book investigates how successful organizations have intelligently responded to change by utilizing creative, innovative and dynamic solutions. Pursuing a complexity theory approach, it analyzes the changes currently taking place, and discusses the optimal use of organizational resources. This provides the reader with a more cohesive way to assess the current and potential future challenges faced by organizations as they respond to environmental, social and economic changes.

Women and Work in Developing Countries - An Annotated Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition): Parvin Ghorayshi Women and Work in Developing Countries - An Annotated Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
Parvin Ghorayshi
R2,096 Discovery Miles 20 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Feminist scholars have shown that women have a long history of productive work outside the home, and current research has focussed on the distinct nature of women's work and the role of women in the workforce. While much attention has been given to industrialized nations, this volume provides a comprehensive bibliographic record of books, articles, dissertations, and audiovisual sources on women and work in developing countries.

The first chapter of the book provides entries for general works and for works of a theoretical nature, and is divided into sections on the global economy, theoretical considerations, and methodological concerns. Other chapters are devoted to particular geographic areas and include sections on introductory works; the social construction of gender; development policies; work and family issues; women's experience of wage-work; work in rural areas; and the efforts of women to promote change. Each entry is accompanied by a descriptive annotation. The last chapter is on audio-visual resources, and the volume concludes with an appendix of organizations and research institutions.
