Non-Standard Employment in Europe - Paradigms, Prevalence and Policy Responses (Hardcover): Max Koch, Martin Fritz Non-Standard Employment in Europe - Paradigms, Prevalence and Policy Responses (Hardcover)
Max Koch, Martin Fritz
R1,968 Discovery Miles 19 680 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

'Non-standard' employment is becoming more common. Fewer people are working full-time and/or have permanent employment contracts; more are working part-time, have fixed-term contracts or are self-employed. Many scholars have pointed to the negative consequences of this development, including 'precarious' forms of employment and in-work poverty. This volume provides a thorough theoretical and empirical analysis of these processes by understanding the 'destandardization' of employment in Europe and the associated modifications in socio-economic regulation both at national and EU level. The book provides country studies of the UK, Spain, Germany, Poland, Croatia, and the Nordic countries and offers comparative European analyses of part-time and fixed-term employment in relation to in-work poverty, exclusion and anomie. Emphasis is on 'best practice' in the governance of non-standard employment. Is there evidence for a new and socially inclusive European employment standard?

Unequal Development and Labour in Brazil (Paperback): Gerry Rodgers, Roberto Veras de Oliveira, Janine Rodgers Unequal Development and Labour in Brazil (Paperback)
Gerry Rodgers, Roberto Veras de Oliveira, Janine Rodgers
R1,201 Discovery Miles 12 010 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book is about unequal development and labour in Brazil, with particular reference to the economic and social development of the Northeast region, which has suffered persistent disadvantage. It combines a historical approach, which shows how economic, social and political institutions have been restructured over time, with an analysis of changes in the pattern of production, employment, unemployment and inequality up to the present day. It draws on detailed case studies to examine the connections between local and national production systems and critical labour market outcomes such as informality in employment, precarious work and disparities between genders, races and regions. The case of the Brazilian Northeast illustrates processes, relationships and policy debates that are important not only in Brazil but also elsewhere. The book will be of interest to teachers, researchers and students in economics, sociology, labour and development; public officials and policy-makers; the international development community; and the general public interested in Latin American affairs. They will find in the book an original and systematic analysis of the factors underlying unequal development and how they respond to different policy regimes and suggestions about the issues that need to be addressed in the future.

Women Who Opt Out - The Debate over Working Mothers and Work-Family Balance (Hardcover, New): Bernie D. Jones Women Who Opt Out - The Debate over Working Mothers and Work-Family Balance (Hardcover, New)
Bernie D. Jones
R3,089 Discovery Miles 30 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In a much-publicized and much-maligned 2003 New York Times article, "The Opt-Out Revolution," the journalist Lisa Belkin made the controversial argument that highly educated women who enter the workplace tend to leave upon marrying and having children. Women Who Opt Out is a collection of original essays by the leading scholars in the field of work and family research, which takes a multi-disciplinary approach in questioning the basic thesis of "the opt-out revolution." The contributors illustrate that the desire to balance both work and family demands continues to be a point of unresolved concern for families and employers alike and women's equity within the workforce still falls behind. Ultimately, they persuasively make the case that most women who leave the workplace are being pushed out by a work environment that is hostile to women, hostile to children, and hostile to the demands of family caregiving, and that small changes in outdated workplace policies regarding scheduling, flexibility, telecommuting and mandatory overtime can lead to important benefits for workers and employers alike. Contributors: Kerstin Aumann, Jamie Dolkas, Ellen Galinsky, Lisa Ackerly Hernandez, Susan J. Lambert, Joya Misra, Maureen Perry-Jenkins, Peggie R. Smith, Pamela Stone, and Joan C. Williams. Rise of the Knowledge Worker (Paperback): James Cortada Rise of the Knowledge Worker (Paperback)
James Cortada
R1,560 Discovery Miles 15 600 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A generation of magnificent scholars, from Peter Drucker to Jack Welch, have taught us that understanding business issues and the profound changes the world's economy is undergoing makes sense if set in historical context. Today the best managers in the world demand to know how things came to be as they are. This collection of essays is designed to give the reader an historical perspective on the fastest growing sector of the work force: knowledge workers. The articles tell you how knowledge workers evolved from manufacturing and agricultural jobs and then go on to give you some insight as to what the future roles of knowledge workers will be. The readings in this volume come from a variety of sources not normally looked at by managers and business executives. There are reports from historians, sociologists, academics, and economic experts. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction on the material, its significance, and something about the context in which it was written, including brief biographical comments on the author. The Rise of the Knowledge Worker is intended for business people, managers, leaders, government employees, and students.

Why Leaders Fail And What It Teaches Us About Leadership (Paperback): Willem Fourie Why Leaders Fail And What It Teaches Us About Leadership (Paperback)
Willem Fourie
R417 Discovery Miles 4 170 Ships in 5 - 10 working days

In Why Leaders Fail and What it Teaches Us About Leadership Willem Fourie helps us make sense of leaders’ failures and why our expectation of leadership infallibility is misguided

Whereas some leadership failures can be rectified, others lead to the failure of teams, organisations or institutions. Using cutting-edge research and reflective practices, Fourie explores leaders’ failure at these personal, interpersonal, group, organisational levels and beyond.

He explores five factors that cause leaders to fail:

Ignorance of personal weaknesses Overconfidence in their influence over others Destructive bias Bad fit in their organisation Misjudged risk

The author shows that our heroic bias – the expectation that leaders should be exceptional, charismatic individuals with a higher level of agency than other people – in many contexts increases the chances of leaders failing. The book offers readers with the tools to understand and respond to leader failure, distilled into seven lessons for post-heroic leaders.

This is an ideal book for students and researchers in leadership, leadership development and management as well as professionals seeking to enhance their leadership skills.

Career Barriers - How People Experience, Overcome, and Avoid Failure (Hardcover): Manuel London Career Barriers - How People Experience, Overcome, and Avoid Failure (Hardcover)
Manuel London
R4,480 Discovery Miles 44 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume's goal is to help readers understand how people react to career barriers and how people develop constructive ways of coping with them. Drawing on original cases and data from interviews with people who faced different types of career barriers, the author describes how people react to, and make sense of, unfortunate events in their lives--and career barriers when they occur. He considers how and why some people cope constructively while others don't, and explores how resilience and support from others help get us through tough times and emerge with a sense of renewal and career growth. He suggests how we can manage career barriers and prepare for--or even prevent--career barriers through foresight, planning, and education. These methods also suggest what managers and organizations should do to help their employees who are or may soon be facing career barriers.
People can learn while facing the stress and self-questioning that accompany career barriers, but this is not an easy process. Learning requires considerable self-understanding and environmental support. The organization can play a vital role in limiting people's pain and creating opportunities. However, despite generous severance packages and outplacement services, many organizations have been little help to people who lose their jobs, suffer job stress, face unreasonably demanding bosses, or suffer from physical handicaps or chronic illnesses. Most of the burden falls on individuals and their families. Assistance can and should come from employers, government agencies, educational institutions, and religious organizations.
While the book focuses on the perspectives of people who have been or may be affected by career barriers, the material should be of interest to a broad range of readers --in particular, academics who study careers, practitioners in the fields of training and development, and government officials who set public policy that affects displaced workers.

Job Design and Technology - Taylorism vs Anti-Taylorism (Hardcover): Hans D Pruijt Job Design and Technology - Taylorism vs Anti-Taylorism (Hardcover)
Hans D Pruijt
R1,443 Discovery Miles 14 430 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Recent trends like "lean production" and "McDonaldisation" indicate that Taylorism is a persistent, underlying principle of many organisations. Despite global competition and the need for speed, flexibility and quality, still the principle of Taylorism remains in the contemporary workplace. Moreover, information technology is often being used in way's that reinforce Taylorist patterns. For some this may be a fact of life. Hans D. Pruijt argues that this is not the case. There is a countermovement, particularly in North-West Europe where viable alternatives are being purseued. But, a systematic analysis of the resulting change of anti-Taylorist practice at shop-floor level has been lacking. This text fills this gap by analyzing 150 cases of anti-Taylorist initiatives in Scandinavia, the UK and the Netherlands. An example of anti-Taylorist principles working towards job enrichment can be seen in Germany; it also examines the role of state policy, research and consultancy in an experiment at Bosch where assembly workers learned testing skills.

Global Perspectives on Gender and Work - Readings and Interpretations (Paperback): Jacqueline Goodman Global Perspectives on Gender and Work - Readings and Interpretations (Paperback)
Jacqueline Goodman
R2,430 Discovery Miles 24 300 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Central to all our lives, work affects our status in the state, the family, and the economy. This comprehensive reader examines the myriad ways in which work whether it is well-paid, unpaid, or underpaid profoundly influences our roles in both the public and private spheres. Jacqueline Goodman has selected a key set of essays that examine influential arguments on such central themes as (1) the origins of the gendered division of labor; (2) historical trends and economic transformations that affect and are affected by women's position in market and non-market work; (3) the effects of occupational and job segregation by sex on status, pay, and promotion; (4) the ways in which formal and informal organizational culture shape and in turn are shaped by gender in professional and managerial positions; (5) class consciousness among wage-earning men and women; (6) the different forms of gender discrimination that women and men face in the workplace; (7) the problems working parents face and the ways in which different societies, subcultures, and genders cope; and (8) alternative approaches to improving the lives of working women and their families in the global economy. With its rich interdisciplinary perspective, this text is ideal for courses in sociology, political science, anthropology, and women's and gender studies. Non-Visitor Research - Audience Development for Arts Organisations (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Martin Troendle Non-Visitor Research - Audience Development for Arts Organisations (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Martin Troendle
R3,100 Discovery Miles 31 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although many studies are available on visitors to cultural institutions, the infrequent or non-visitors are largely unexplored. However, they make up the majority of the population. Their motivation for not visiting is therefore the focus of this volume. This volume provides an in-depth overview of the international state of nonvisitor research. Building on this, extensive quantitative and qualitative analyses are conducted on reasons for non-visitation. This is followed by an empirically based, practice-oriented theory of visitor attraction. The authors thus present the first comprehensive work on non-visitor research in Germany. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Nicht-Besucherforschung by Martin Troendle, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2019. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

The Disposable Work Force - Worker Displacement and Employment Instability in America (Paperback, New): Thomas Moore The Disposable Work Force - Worker Displacement and Employment Instability in America (Paperback, New)
Thomas Moore
R1,485 Discovery Miles 14 850 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The twenty-first century has witnessed a transformation of the organization, opportunities, and terms of work. Downsizing, restructuring, and outsourcing are the forces altering employment relationships throughout the work force. Those who tend to see the future in a positive light view the evolving role between employer and employee as empowering for the individual.

This book examines the consequences of economic instability due to job loss and the displacement of millions of workers. It draws upon case studies of worker displacement as well as national labor force surveys. Thomas S. Moore finds that consequences of economic instability are productivity slowdown, increased disparities in earnings and income, and higher average unemployment. He assesses the extent of job loss nationwide, its costs to the individuals directly affected, and the way in which the incidence of displacement and earnings loss has shifted over time. Although drawn from an earlier period, the data have an obvious relevance to today's labor markets.

Moore argues for an employment and training system that gives employers an incentive to invest in the skills of their employees. Federally funded training programs have not improved the earning ability of displaced and disadvantaged workers, and state-sponsored programs tend to exclude those most in need of assistance. Moore suggests direct employer investment in the general skills of employees. Initially published in a different economic downturn, this continues to be a must read book for all economists, sociologists, and policymakers.

Toilet as Business for the Hygiene of the Chinese Community in Colonial Hong Kong (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Yuk-sik Chong Toilet as Business for the Hygiene of the Chinese Community in Colonial Hong Kong (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Yuk-sik Chong
R3,121 Discovery Miles 31 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book analyses how public toilets were provided by the government and local business in Hong Kong between the 1860s and 1930s through a process that was embedded in class and racial politics. Addressing public toilet provision from a political economy perspective, it focuses on the interplay of the cross-border night soil business between Hong Kong and China's silk producing area; the silk market between China and Colonial powers; the Hong Kong land market between the colonial government and Chinese business; and how these factors jointly produced a network of toilets in the colony. As the book shows, the commercial viability of toilets created multiple logics and a new moral geography; further, exploring the topic can help us gain a better understanding of how urban governance functioned in colonies and how it intertwined with economic contingencies within a global economic system. The intended readership includes academics and members of the general public with an interest in colonialism, public infrastructures, public health, government-business relations, and urban governance.

Dealing in Uncertainty - Insurance in the Age of Finance (Hardcover): Arjen van der Heide Dealing in Uncertainty - Insurance in the Age of Finance (Hardcover)
Arjen van der Heide
R2,296 Discovery Miles 22 960 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Insurance is an important - if still poorly understood - mechanism for dealing with a broad variety of risks associated with modern life. This book conducts an in-depth examination of one of the largest and longest-established private insurance industries in Europe: British life insurance. In doing so, it draws on over 40 oral history interviews to trace how the sector is changed since the 1970s, a period characterised by rampant financialisation and neoliberalisation. Combining insights from science and technology studies and economic sociology, this is an unprecedented study of the evolution of insurance practices and an invaluable contribution to our understanding of financial capitalism.

Walking around the commercial streets of New York, San Francisco, Milan, London, or Paris and looking at the succession of multinational chain stores' windows, you can easily forget what country you are in. However, if you hear the small talk among the employees, you hear very different stories. In New York, a 30-year-old woman is worried because she does not know if she will work enough hours to make a living the following week-whereas, in Milan, a mother of the same age knows she will work 20 hours a week but is concerned about whether her contract will be renewed at the end of the following month. Following three years of fieldwork, which included 100 in-depth interviews with front-line retail workers and unionists in New York City and Milan, Front-Line Workers in the Global Service Economy investigates both the lived experiences of salespersons in the "fast fashion" industry-a retail sector made of large chains of stores selling fashion garments at low prices-and the possibilities of collective action and structured forms of resistance to these global trends. In the face of economic globalization and vigorous managerial efforts to minimize labor costs and to standardize the retail experience, mass fashion workers' stories tell us how strong the pressure toward work devaluation in low-skilled service sectors can be, and how devastating its effects are on the workers themselves.

Paresh Wankhade, Leo McCann, Peter Murphy
R1,411 Discovery Miles 14 110 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Critical Perspectives in Emergency Services Management makes an important contribution to the subject of emergency services management and to public administration and organization studies more generally. It critically assesses developments in emergency services management by examining the multi-dimensional nature of the provision of emergency services and their connectedness in advanced western democracies. The effective management of emergency services has never been more important than in today's high-pressured and cost-conscious public sector. The authors of this volume forensically analyse the challenges of delivering emergency services within this context. This book provides an in-depth, scholarly and comprehensive analysis of the changing landscape of emergency service provision and clearly addresses a gap in the market for a critical volume on the emergency services. For anyone seeking to understand why and how the management of emergency services matters, this collection is essential reading.

Today, managers, politicians, educators, and healthcare providers are highly skilled technicians who navigate modern systems. However, followers seek more than know-how; they desire moral leadership. Even leaders equipped with skills must make difficult ethical choices. This book connects philosophy to leadership by examining three representative texts from the history of philosophy: Plato's Republic, Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, and Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince. The leadership ideas contained in each one of these philosopher's works were not only pioneering for their age but continue to be relevant today because they provide insight into the enduring questions of leadership. The book demonstrates the timeliness of the classical works by applying these philosophical approaches to historical and contemporary cases. This book is ideal for readers who are acquainted with philosophy and those who are uninitiated. The connections made between philosophy, leadership literature, and real-life leaders enable readers to appreciate how deeper reflection into the themes of leadership might merit scholarly attention and bear witness to the close union between the philosophy of leadership and the real world.

Gender, Work and Space (Hardcover): Susan Hanson, Geraldine Pratt Gender, Work and Space (Hardcover)
Susan Hanson, Geraldine Pratt
R6,739 Discovery Miles 67 390 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"Gender, Work and Space" explores how boundaries are constructed between women and men, and among women living in different neighborhoods. Focusing on work, the segregation of men and women into different occupations, and variations in women's work experiences in various parts of the city, the authors argue that these differences are grounded, are constituted in and through space, place and situated networks.
The authors use a case study of a contemporary city to establish that many women are dependent on extremely local employment opportunities, especially those women with heavy household responsibilities. Women's dependence on locally available jobs focuses attention on the existence of different employment districts throughout the city. The argument is that social, economic and geographic boundaries are overlaid and intertwined. This book contributes to debates about the geography of labor market segmentation, to our understanding of sex-based occupational segregation and, in the close attention given to the construction of social, geographic, economic and symbolic boundaries in ordinary lives, provides a counterbalance to the focus on mobility within contemporary feminist theory.

Nathalie Burnay, Jim Ogg, Clary Krekula, Patricia Vendramin
R3,375 Discovery Miles 33 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This open access book addresses the important and neglected question of older workers who are excluded from the labour market. It challenges post-capitalist discourses of active ageing with a focus on restrictive end-of-career and retirement measures. The book demonstrates how a paradigm shift is generating real processes of exclusion for important sectors of the population. By providing strong empirical evidence from different contexts, the impact of different life course trajectories on the risks and the opportunities at the end of career are demonstrated. The organisation of workplace and institutional frameworks which reinforce inequalities are also presented. As such the book is an essential reading for students, academics and policy makers who seek to understand how exclusion processes operate to the disadvantage of older workers in the labour market.
