Children, Teens, Families, and Mass Media - The Millennial Generation (Hardcover, New): Rose M Kundanis Children, Teens, Families, and Mass Media - The Millennial Generation (Hardcover, New)
Rose M Kundanis
R4,521 Discovery Miles 45 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This text provides a survey of the relationship between children and those mass media found in the home--radio, television, and the Internet. Using a theory-based approach, with attention to developmental, gender, ethnic, and generational differences, author Rose M. Kundanis explores the nature of these relationships and their influences on children and families, looking at the experiences children have at various developmental ages and across generations. She reviews children's own experiences with media and examines the variety of effects that can operate due to children's perceptions at different ages, including fear, aggression, and sexuality. The text includes theory and research from mass communication, developmental psychology, education, and other areas, representing the broad spectrum of influences at work. Features of this text include: *side-bar interviews with teens who work in media and people who develop policy or programming for children's media; *in-depth explanations of the Generational Theory and the Developmental Theory as they apply to children and the media, plus a survey of other applicable theories; *description of the key points of the Children's Television Act of 1990, the Telecommunications Act of 1996, and other relevant legislation; and *questions and activities to extend the exploration of topics. This text will help students develop a critical understanding of the relationship of children and the media; the variables affecting and influencing children's response to media; the theories that explain and predict this relationship; and the ways in which children use the media and can develop media literacy. It is appropriate for courses at the advanced undergraduate and graduate level, including children and media, media literacy, mass communication and society, and media processes and effects, as well as special topics courses in education, communication, and psychology.

Youth in a Changing Karelia - A Comparative Study of Everyday Life, Future Orientations and Political Culture of Youth in... Youth in a Changing Karelia - A Comparative Study of Everyday Life, Future Orientations and Political Culture of Youth in North-West Russia and Eastern Finland (Paperback)
Vesa Puuronen, Pentti Sinisalo, Larissa Shvets
R1,132 Discovery Miles 11 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This title was first published in 2000: The book is aimed at uncovering certain features of the future of Karelia, which is partly situated in Russia and Finland. The authors believe that this can be done by studying in depth the opinions, values, norms, beliefs, fears and hopes of young people living in two neighbouring but profoundly different societies: Russia and Finland. Young people are constructing these societies in the 20th century. The book is based on a comparative research project, financed by the Academy of Finland, which was carried out during 1995-1997 by an international, inter-disciplinary research group. The novelty of the book is based on the use of different research methods and theoretical starting points. One of the crucial questions raised by the book concerns the applicability of Western theories in research into Russian society and people. The analysis shows that many of the concepts applied frequently in Western social sciences do not apply in research relating to Russian specific culture. The book proposes that more attention should be paid to the challenges of comparative research.

Adolescent Romantic Relations and Sexual Behavior - Theory, Research, and Practical Implications (Hardcover, New): Paul... Adolescent Romantic Relations and Sexual Behavior - Theory, Research, and Practical Implications (Hardcover, New)
Paul Florsheim
R4,525 Discovery Miles 45 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Developmental and clinical researchers have only just discovered the phenomenon of adolescent romance as a topic of serious scientific inquiry. This discovery may be related to the overwhelming evidence that adult romantic relationships are failing at alarming rates. Dramatic increases in the rates of divorce, out of wedlock childbirth, and relationship violence lead to questions about the developmental precursors of romantic love and commitment. What's wrong with love and can it be fixed?
This book brings together a diverse group of experts from various disciplines to address a serious gap in the understanding of adolescent development. Part I focuses on romantic relations and sexual behavior from the perspective of normative adolescent development. Part II centers on high-risk adolescents and Part III explores the practical implications of current theory and research for clinicians, educators, and health administrators. Together the chapters in this integrative and clinically useful book lay a foundation for understanding how adolescents successfully navigate the tumultuous waters of young love.

Providing Mental Health Servies to Youth Where They Are - School and Community Based Approaches (Hardcover): Harinder S.... Providing Mental Health Servies to Youth Where They Are - School and Community Based Approaches (Hardcover)
Harinder S. Ghuman, Mark D Weist, Richard M. Sarles
R4,220 Discovery Miles 42 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Barriers to community mental health centers (such as stigma, waiting lists) prevent youth from receiving necessary services. Providing Mental Health Services to Youth Where They Are identifies the reform that is needed in children's mental health service. As the issues of systems of mental health care have received increased attention, so has the recognition of the benefits of providing services to youth where they are: that is, in natural settings, such as home or school. Principles to include in systems of mental health care for youth are equally as important as actually reaching the youth: involvement of families, school staff, community leaders, and clergy. The development of programs are matched to the developmental, cultural and other needs of youth in a community so they mesh with existing services. This book describes how these principles play out in school-, home-, and community-based mental health programs for youth.

Adoption, Race, and Identity - From Infancy to Young Adulthood (Paperback, 2nd edition): William Laufer Adoption, Race, and Identity - From Infancy to Young Adulthood (Paperback, 2nd edition)
William Laufer
R1,497 Discovery Miles 14 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Adoption, Race, and Identity" is a long-range study of the impact of interracial adoption on those adopted and their families. Initiated in 1972, it was continued in 1979, 1984, and 1991. Cumulatively, these four phases trace the subjects from early childhood into young adulthood. This is the only extended study of this controversial subject.

Simon and Altstein provide a broad perspective of the impact of transracial adoption and include profiles of the families involved in the study. They explore and compare the experiences of both the parents and the children. They identify families whose adoption experiences were problematic and those whose experiences were positive. Finally, the study looks at the insights the experience of transracial adoption brought to the adoptive parents and what advice they would pass on to future parents adopting children from different racial backgrounds. They include the reflections of those adopted included in the 1972 first phase, who are now adults themselves.

This second edition includes a new concluding chapter that updates the fourth and last phase of the study. The authors were able to locate 88 of the 96 families who participated in the 1984 study. Bringing together all four phases of this twenty-year study into one volume gives the reader a richer and deeper understanding of what the experience of transracial adoption has meant for the parents, the adoptees, and children born into the families studied. This landmark work, will be of compelling interest to social workers, policy makers, and professionals and families involved on all sides of interracial adoption.

Eastern European Youth Cultures in a Global Context (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Matthias Schwartz, Heike Winkel Eastern European Youth Cultures in a Global Context (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Matthias Schwartz, Heike Winkel
R2,860 R1,959 Discovery Miles 19 590 Save R901 (32%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The demise of state Socialisms caused radical social, cultural and economic changes in Eastern Europe. Since then, young people have been confronted with fundamental disruptions and transformations to their daily environment, while an unsettling, globalized world substantially reshapes local belongings and conventional values. In times of multiple instabilities and uncertainties, this volume argues, young people prefer to try to adjust to given circumstances than to adopt the behaviour of potential rebellious, adolescent role models, dissident counter-cultures or artistic breakings of taboo. Eastern European Youth Cultures in a Global Context takes this situation as a starting point for an examination of generational change, cultural belongings, political activism and everyday practices of young people in different Eastern European countries from an interdisciplinary perspective. It argues that the conditions of global change not only call for a differentiated evaluation of youth cultures, but also for a revision of our understanding of 'youth' itself - in Eastern Europe and beyond.

Principles and Practice of Informal Education - Learning Through Life (Hardcover): Linda Deer Richardson, Mary Wolfe Principles and Practice of Informal Education - Learning Through Life (Hardcover)
Linda Deer Richardson, Mary Wolfe
R5,203 Discovery Miles 52 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This new and exciting text is aimed at informal educators involved in youth work, community work and adult education and health promotion. The contributors explore the principles and practice of informal education and focus, in particular, on the notion of 'working with' which is central to practice, in this sector. The book argues for an approach which is relevant to a number of professional fields and which focuses on a way of working rather than upon a specific target group.
The book looks at the role of an educator in informal education and youth work settings. Comprehensive and analytical, it looks at social, cultural and political contexts of education. The authors discuss the practical side of teaching from the setting, programme planning and communication to activity-based work, one-to-one case work, formal group work and managing the work load. Finally the book analyses developing professional practice, the use of line management and supervision, and evaluation of work.

Youth Aggression and Violence - A Psychological Approach (Paperback): Thomas G. Moeller Youth Aggression and Violence - A Psychological Approach (Paperback)
Thomas G. Moeller
R1,252 Discovery Miles 12 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The rash of school shootings in the late 1990s has generated a tremendous amount of public concern about youth aggression and violence. But students, trainees, and professionals who work with children and adolescents have had no concise or systematic survey of our current knowledge about causes and effective approaches to intervention and prevention on which to draw. "Youth Aggression and Violence" has filled the void.
Comprehensive and readable, it:
* utilizes theory and research from the developmental psychology of "normal" children and adolescents, as well as material on "abnormal" forms of development, such as disruptive behavior disorders and juvenile delinquency;
* situates youthful aggression and violence within the overall framework of children's moral development;
* integrates quantitative research with carefully considered qualitative research and case studies;
* discusses the genetic and biological underpinnings of youthful aggression, as well as family and social factors related to antisocial behavior;
* emphasizes cognitive, motivational, and emotional processes involved in youth aggression and violence;
* provides in-depth coverage of juvenile killers and school violence;
* examines female aggression and violence in a variety of contexts; and
* critically examines a number of questions frequently discussed in conjunction with youth violence, such as media violence, firearm accessibility, and the relationship between self-esteem and aggression.

The Values Debate - A Voice from the Pupils (Paperback): Leslie J. Francis The Values Debate - A Voice from the Pupils (Paperback)
Leslie J. Francis
R1,018 Discovery Miles 10 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Values Debate: A Voice from the Pupils presents findings from a survey conducted among 30,000 13-15 year olds throughout England and Wales, giving particular attention to social, personal and moral issues. The analysis begins with an overview of what teenagers really think. What are their views on sex, family, AIDS and homosexuality? What stand do they take on tobacco, alcohol and drugs? What values do they hold on pollution, poverty and responsibility for the developing world? What value do they place on themselves and on their future lives? The analysis then examines the factors which shape these fundamental values. How do values differ between male and female teenagers? What difference does social class make? How important is the family? Does religion continue to play a part? Does private schooling shape a different set of values? How important is the experience of being bullied at school? This analysis needs to be taken seriously by politicians, teachers, youth leaders, social workers, doctors, clergy and parents, and by all who are professionally or personally concerned with young people.

Thomas L Whitman, John G. Borkowski, Deborah A. Keogh, Keri Weed
R1,022 Discovery Miles 10 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Despite a growing body of scholarship on the phenomenon of adolescent parenting, minimal attention has been given to investigating systematic changes in adolescent mothers' and their children's psychological functioning over time. This book reports on a longitudinal study conducted to examine the social and psychological consequences of teen parenting for both mothers and their children. Qualitative and quantitative analyses are used to explain why some mothers and children fare better than others, showing that the lives and developmental trajectories of adolescent mothers and children are inextricably interwoven and closely linked to the social contexts within which they live. The book closes with social policy implications of the research including recommendations for intervention programs and policies to help adolescent parents and their children achieve developmental success and find happiness.
