Dual Legacies in the Contemporary Caribbean - Continuing Aspects of British and French Dominion (Hardcover): Paul Sutton Dual Legacies in the Contemporary Caribbean - Continuing Aspects of British and French Dominion (Hardcover)
Paul Sutton
R2,847 Discovery Miles 28 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Dual Legacies in the Contemporary Caribbean (1986) is a comparative and systematic study of the legacies bequeathed by British and French colonial rule in the Caribbean. It examines in detail what are self-evidently among the more tangible legacies from the era of slavery presently manifest in the region: the pattern, structure and decline of the sugar economy in the French and Commonwealth Caribbean; the continuing influence of Britain in the pre- and post-independence political systems of the Commonwealth Caribbean, as well as of France over its Caribbean possessions; and the retention and adaptation of cultural forms derived from colonial practice as variously exhibited in the educational and ideological beliefs current within the region. These essays offer provocative insights and report intriguing parallels between the British and French experiences in the region. They also offer new interpretations of the processes at work in the area and confirm the utility of the comparative approach in appraising its problems.

Crime, Justice and Society in Colonial Sri Lanka (Hardcover): John D. Rogers Crime, Justice and Society in Colonial Sri Lanka (Hardcover)
John D. Rogers
R2,848 Discovery Miles 28 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Crime, Justice and Society in Colonial Sri Lanka (1987) examines Sri Lanka’s justice system under British rule, and concentrates on two of its aspects: the effectiveness of the administration of law and order, and the relationship between crime and social change. It argues that the colonial judicial system did penetrate rural areas, but did not operate in the way the British intended. Instead, Sri Lankans adapted the state institutions so that they functioned more effectively within indigenous culture.

Prelude to Imperialism - British Reactions to Central African Society, 1840–1890 (Hardcover): H. Alan C. Cairns Prelude to Imperialism - British Reactions to Central African Society, 1840–1890 (Hardcover)
H. Alan C. Cairns
R3,393 Discovery Miles 33 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the half century preceding imperial control approximately eight hundred Britons lived and travelled in East and Central Africa. Prelude to Imperialism (1965) examines their relations with and attitudes to African tribal societies. The author presents a broad survey of tribal life, an analysis of culture contact, and an extended discussion of the underlying assumptions of the British evaluation of Africans and of the conditions in which they lived. The description of African social conditions and the analysis of grass roots imperialism constitute important contributions to the debate on Western imperialism.

British Imperialism and Australia, 1783–1833 - An Economic History of Australasia (Hardcover): Brian Fitzpatrick British Imperialism and Australia, 1783–1833 - An Economic History of Australasia (Hardcover)
Brian Fitzpatrick
R3,397 Discovery Miles 33 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

British Imperialism and Australia (1939) looks at the early economic history of Australia, which towards the end of the period under review became an important field of British Imperial development. The establishment of a peasant economy in New South Wales was attempted half a world away from the imperial architects, but war with revolutionary France interrupted the transportation of convicts and poor freemen, and in doing so gave the scheme a character quite unlike that originally envisaged by Pitt and Sydney.

British Policy Towards the Indian States 1905–1939 (Hardcover): S.R. Ashton British Policy Towards the Indian States 1905–1939 (Hardcover)
S.R. Ashton
R2,843 Discovery Miles 28 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

British Policy Towards the Indian States (1982) examines the concept of indirect rule in terms of both its application and consequences in the princely states of India during the first four decades of the twentieth century. The author first deals with the political geography and diversity of the princely states and the legacy of the Mughal emperors, and then proceeds to discuss the nature and consequences of the alliances established between the paramount power of the British Raj and the princes at the beginning of the twentieth century. The impact of the non-interference policy is assessed and a full consideration is given to the failure of that policy.

Colonial Planning - A Comparative Study (Hardcover): Barbu Niculescu Colonial Planning - A Comparative Study (Hardcover)
Barbu Niculescu
R2,840 Discovery Miles 28 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Colonial Planning (1958) breaks new ground in its study of colonial development plans on a comparative basis. It starts with a summary of the statistical data for the 70 odd territories studied, including territorial incomes, capital accumulation, origin and size of planning finances and metropolitan contributions, both within and outside the plans. This section also discusses the validity and comparability of the data. The author then selects, with the help of the many contributions to the study of the problems of economic growth, those problems which seem especially relevant to administrative planning. After an outline of the historical developments which have led to the widespread acceptance of colonial planning in its then-current forms, he analyses the various types of planning machinery established both in the metropolitan centres and in the territories, traces their connections and attempts a classification of their organisational problems. Finally, he analyses and classifies the plans themselves, giving special attention to attempts at solving the problems of priorities. This work is based on administrative documents, and especially on the various colonial development plans put forward since the war: colonial development planning so far has been mainly an administrative exercise and its problems, methods, scope and aims can be best understood if studies within an administrative context.

Colonial Africa (Hardcover): A.J. Christopher Colonial Africa (Hardcover)
A.J. Christopher
R2,843 Discovery Miles 28 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There have been few more remarkable events than the European colonisation and decolonisation of Africa. Often within a single lifespan countries were conquered, reorganised, settled and then granted independence. Colonial Africa (1984) examines the impact this had on the landscape of Africa. The period of colonial contact between Europe and Africa had been lengthy, beginning in the early fifteenth century; yet for much of the continent the colonial period was relatively short, from the 1880s to the 1960s. European intervention in the nineteenth century was motivated by new demands of the European economy, resulting in the conquest of virtually the entire continent. As a result various groups of colonists arrived in Africa and each tried to impose a particular imprint upon the landscape. The colonial powers each had their own styles which are most evident in the architecture bequeathed to independent Africa. This is a clear account of the way that historical attitudes have dictated the appearance and geography of modern Africa.

It analyses his policies for British control around the world, most notably in the West Indies, North America, Africa and India, and how these policies brought Britain into conflict with Europe’s two main colonial powers, Spain and France.

Robert Keith Collins
R3,817 Discovery Miles 38 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the academic study of the African and Native American contact, African cultural change in Native America, as well as the existence of African Americans with Native American ancestry and Native Americans with African ancestry in the Western Hemisphere. Drawing upon the fields of anthropology, history, and sociology that initiated research into these areas, this book attempts to provide understandings of how scholars have studied and continue to understand the experiences of African-Native Americans or individuals of blended − culturally and/or racially − African and Native American ancestry in the North, Central, and South America. It aims to illuminate problems, perspectives, and prospects for interdisciplinary research. The first part is structured to cover the problems – past and present − encountered in investigating the scope of the topic and presents an overview of the most important academic findings. The second part provides both anthropological and interdisciplinary perspectives on the lived experiences of African-Native Americans with both Native Americans and non-Native Americans. And, finally, it sketches out future directions in scholarship. This book will be of interest to anthropologists, historians, sociologists, and Ethnic Studies and Native American and Indigenous Studies scholars, from undergraduates interested in the topic to graduate students and researchers seeking to interrogate past research or fill explanatory gaps in the literature with new research.

England and Scotland - 1560-1707 (Hardcover): Douglas Nobbs England and Scotland - 1560-1707 (Hardcover)
Douglas Nobbs
R2,943 Discovery Miles 29 430 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1952, this book analyses the constitutional, religious, economic and social conditions of the two countries in the late sixteenth century and surveys the complicated history of the following century. The Reformation made possible a transformation of Anglo-Scottish relations. Owing to the difference of institutions, traditions, and ideals, the alternative to absolutism was in the earlier instance the Cromwellian Protectorate and in the later the movement toward national separation arrested only by the contract of the Act of Union. This book charts the history of these relations in the light of divergent national traditions and ideals.

The Politics of Food Provisioning in Colombia - Agrarian Movements and Negotiations with the State (Hardcover): Felipe... The Politics of Food Provisioning in Colombia - Agrarian Movements and Negotiations with the State (Hardcover)
Felipe Roa-Clavijo
R4,065 Discovery Miles 40 650 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book explores food provisioning in Colombia by examining the role and impact of the agrarian negotiations which took place in the aftermath of the 2013-2014 national strikes. Most of the research in the field of agrarian studies in Colombia has focused on inequalities in land distribution, the impacts of violent conflict, and most recently, the first phase of the peace agreement implementation. This book links and complements these literatures by critically engaging with an original framework that uncovers the conflicts and politics of food provisioning: who produces what and where, and with what socio-economic effects. This analytical lens is used to explain the re-emergence of national agrarian movements, their contestation of the dominant development narratives and their engagement in discussions about food sovereignty with the state. The analysis incorporates a wide range of voices from high-level government representatives and leaders from national agrarian movements. Their narratives of food provisioning and the broader role of the food industry are reviewed and the key findings show an underlying conflict within food provisioning based on the struggle of marginalised smallholders to develop alternative agri-food systems that can be included in the local and domestic food markets in the context of a state dominated by an export and import approach. Overall, the book argues that the battle ground of agrarian conflicts has moved to the fi eld of food provisioning and using this approach has the potential to reframe the debate about the future of food and agriculture in Colombia and beyond. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of food and agriculture, rural development, peasant studies, and Latin American Studies.

Chinese Internet Buzzwords - Research on Network Languages in Internet Group Communication (Hardcover): Zhou Yan Chinese Internet Buzzwords - Research on Network Languages in Internet Group Communication (Hardcover)
Zhou Yan
R4,491 Discovery Miles 44 910 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

As the Internet has reshaped the way we communicate, people's reading has become more fragmented and attention has been directed to a more concise and general form of language that outlines the most important information. This language of the internet, a language system that concentrates on the content of events and public emotions, has emerged and received wide currency. This monograph is one of the first books to examine the language of the internet in the Chinese context. By analysing content and discourse, the author examines Chinese website buzzwords since 2010. She reveals the mechanisms of generation, the cultural nature and political characteristics of the network language, analyzes the causes of its emergence and popularity, and highlights its social and academic significance. Meanwhile, she argues that research in the area is essentially interdisciplinary, involving not only perspectives from Journalism and Communication Studies, but also Philosophy, Culture, Linguistics and Sociology. Students and scholars of Communication Studies and Journalism, as well as Culture Studies should be greatly interested in this title.

Diasporic Mobilities on Vacation - Tourism of European-Moroccans at Home (Hardcover): Lauren Wagner Diasporic Mobilities on Vacation - Tourism of European-Moroccans at Home (Hardcover)
Lauren Wagner
R3,823 Discovery Miles 38 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Diasporic Mobilities on Vacation is a nuanced exploration of the embodied and affective practices of Moroccans from Europe visiting Morocco for summer vacation. Rather than characterizing them as uncomfortably split between homelands, this book focuses on how their touristic leisure practices create their own space of diasporic belonging. An expert on Moroccan diaspora communities and mobile lifestyles, the book draws on multi-sited and mobile ethnographic research to take the reader along on the journey 'home' and experience the daily lives of diasporic visitors. Their practices, activities, and encounters on vacation offer insights into larger issues of class, leisure consumption, and transnational belonging in South-to-North migration contexts. Concretely, the book shows how these holiday encounters simultaneously generate integration into Morocco for migrant descendants who can feel at 'home' in this homeland, and differentiation from others in how they embody 'Moroccaness' as social and material actors. This book shows how seemingly frivolous practices of leisure have material consequences for individuals who belong across homelands. Positioned at the intersection of migration studies, leisure and tourism mobilities, and ethnomethodology and practice theory, this book is a worthwhile read for scholars and students-indeed, anyone questioning or experiencing problems of belonging in transnational and diasporic contexts.

Blended Learning and MOOCs - A New Generation Education System (Hardcover): Manpreet Singh Manna, Balamurugan Balusamy,... Blended Learning and MOOCs - A New Generation Education System (Hardcover)
Manpreet Singh Manna, Balamurugan Balusamy, Meenakshi Sharma, Prithi Samuel
R3,836 Discovery Miles 38 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book presents a framework for integrating blended learning and massive open online courses (MOOCs) in the Indian education system. It argues that blended teaching and learning is the most suitable approach to education in a post-COVID-19 world. Drawing on case studies used in blended learning practices around the world, the book provides ample resources for beginners to improvise the spread of knowledge around information technology in higher education. It discusses various concepts such as flip learning in blended learning models and examines the self-assessment tools and structures it offers to institutions for building competencies. In addition to addressing the challenges and opportunities of adopting the digital mode of teaching, the book also offers techniques and concepts helpful for designing MOOCs. It covers concepts such as curriculum designing, content flow, teaching behavior, and evaluation patterns, which are important aspects of online teaching. An indispensable guide to navigating the shift from offline to online teaching, this book will be of interest to students, teachers, and researchers of education, education technology, digital education, and information technology. It will also be useful to policymakers, educational institutions, EdTech start-ups, NGOs in the education sector, and online education centers.
