Cultural Astronomy of the Japanese Archipelago - Exploring the Japanese Skyscape (Paperback): Akira Goto Cultural Astronomy of the Japanese Archipelago - Exploring the Japanese Skyscape (Paperback)
Akira Goto
R669 Discovery Miles 6 690 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Goto introduces the diverse and multilayered skylore and cultural astron- omy of the peoples of the Japanese Archipelago. Going as far back as the Jomon, Yayoi, and Kofun periods, this book examines the significance of constellations in the daily life of farmers, fishermen, sailors, priests, and the ruling classes throughout Japan's ancient and medieval history. As well as covering the systems of the dominant Japanese people, he also explores the astronomy of the Ainu people of Hokkaido, and of the people of the Ryukyu Islands. Along the way he discusses the importance of astronomy in official rituals, mythol- ogy, and Shinto and Buddhist ceremonies. This book provides a unique overview of cultural astronomy in Japan and is a valuable resource for researchers as well as anyone who is inter- ested in Japanese culture and history.

Humanitarianism, Human Rights, and Security - The Case of Frontex (Paperback): Nina Perkowski Humanitarianism, Human Rights, and Security - The Case of Frontex (Paperback)
Nina Perkowski
R1,259 Discovery Miles 12 590 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Examining the relationship between humanitarianism, human rights, and security in the governance of borders and migration, this book analyses the case of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), challenging the common assumption that humanitarianism and human rights provide a critical basis for countering securitisation. Arguing that these are not three opposing discourses and modes of governing, the author contributes to a deeper understanding of their connections and combined effects in border governance. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and document analysis, the book offers three perspectives on Frontex's changing relationship to humanitarianism and human rights. In doing so, it provides a multifaceted account of Frontex and its gradual appropriation of what are often considered pro-migrant discourses. Combining organisational sociology with a Foucauldian analysis, the book speaks to ongoing debates on continuity and change in the security field and provides insights into studying security organisations more generally. Drawing on insights from Critical Migration and Border Studies, Critical Security Studies, Critical Humanitarianism and Human Rights Studies, and Organisational Sociology, the book will generate interest to multiple disciplines, including Sociology, International Relations, Politics, Anthropology, European Studies, and Geography.

Islam in India - History, Politics and Society (Hardcover): Nasir Raza Khan Islam in India - History, Politics and Society (Hardcover)
Nasir Raza Khan
R4,143 Discovery Miles 41 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Islam in India: History, Politics and Society is based on the historical and contemporary relevance of the religion and its related culture(s) in India. Besides being a major religious doctrine, Islam has been the main political ideology for many dynasties in India such as Delhi Sultanate (1206-1451); the Illbaris Turks (also known as Mamluk 1206-90); Khiljis (1290-1320); Tughlaqs (1320-1414); Sayyids (1414-51), Afghans and the Mughal Empire. Islam played a pivotal role in shaping the polity and society during the period of each dynasty. This book argues that Islam in India ought to be seen not only as a political and religious ideology of the dynasties, but also as a significant force that shaped the cultural fabric of the country. Regional Sufi Centres in India - Significance and Contribution (Hardcover): Nasir Raza Khan Regional Sufi Centres in India - Significance and Contribution (Hardcover)
Nasir Raza Khan
R4,122 Discovery Miles 41 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Regional Sufi Centres in India: Significance and Contribution sets out to explore and understand the hundreds of years old multi-religious sect of India, "Sufism," which advocates humane and global outlook for entire mankind and regards humanity as a brotherhood. Sufism came to India from its Arabic Turkic and Persian homes, instead of remaining confined to palaces and mosques. It spread out to all over India establishing regional Centres and Dargahs often known by the surnames of the families which sustained it, like Khanqah-e-Niazia, in Bareilly (UP), Khanqah Gesu Daraz in Gulbarga, and Firdausi in Bihar. The authors of this volume discuss some of the regional Sufi Centres in India and their contribution in the social emancipation of the society. India's Sri Lanka Policy (Hardcover): Vinod Khobragade India's Sri Lanka Policy (Hardcover)
Vinod Khobragade
R4,136 Discovery Miles 41 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book focuses on India's foreign policy towards Sri Lanka before the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord (ISLA) in July 1987 and India's military intervention after the ISLA. The post-intervention developments brought strategic changes in India's Sri Lanka policy. However, after leadership change in both the countries, India confined its policy to moral support and decided to abstain from direct intervention or involvement in Sri Lanka's domestic politics. After the demise of the LTTE and its leadership in 2009, India played a constructive role in rebuilding infrastructure in Sri Lanka. The book also focuses on the developments of the relationships between India and Sri Lanka in the post-IPKF period and the bilateral developments in the Post - LTTE periods. Print edition not for sale in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Bhutan)

Theorizing Cohesive Development - An Alternative Paradigm (Paperback): Sunil Ray, Neetu Choudhary, Rajeev K Kumar Theorizing Cohesive Development - An Alternative Paradigm (Paperback)
Sunil Ray, Neetu Choudhary, Rajeev K Kumar
R1,289 Discovery Miles 12 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume proposes an alternative development paradigm to the existing capitalist extant one, and studies how it is distinctly different from the older system. Rooted in the principles of solidarity between humans, as well as between humans and nature, this alternative paradigm replaces the methodological individualism of capitalism by ‘reciprocal altruism’, a new logic of capital, to give pace and direction to the development process. The essays in this volume highlight instances of various forms of solidarity that have emerged in the contemporary world—such as resistance movements of informal workers, the formation of an autonomous cooperative of self-employed waste pickers in India, called SWaCH, and Brazil and Cuba’s experiments with Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE)—to achieve long sustaining cohesive development. They also provide recommendations as to how the State can mold its development process to the benefit of marginalized communities, especially in India and Bangladesh. Featuring insights from leading experts in the field, Theorizing Cohesive Development will be an indispensable read for students and researchers of development studies, economics, political economy, political science and sociology, minority studies and Asian studies.

It looks forward over the coming decades to consider how societies and economies will deal with ageing and the necessary structural and behavioural changes that this will entail.

Education in the New China - Shaping Ideas at Work (Paperback): Yvonne Turner, Amy Acker Education in the New China - Shaping Ideas at Work (Paperback)
Yvonne Turner, Amy Acker
R1,388 Discovery Miles 13 880 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The effects of the de-regulation of the Chinese university system have been nothing short of spectacular. For the first time since 1949, students possessing neither gifted intellect nor political connections have been able to share in the benefits of higher education, while a flood of international educators have opened up a previously cloistered and politically sensitized academic world. This fascinating book examines China's higher education system, and how it's new and unique blend of foreign and Chinese perspectives impact on both the lives of students and academics and wider Chinese society. Viewed with suspicion as a new type of Chinese by the older generation and by the government, they are at the same time the very entrepreneurs driving the economic and social revolution sweeping the country. Using a range of in-depth interviews and unique research, it provides open and often frank accounts of life, work and education in China, from the Cultural Revolution to the creation of its market-focused entrepreneurial generation. Candid and illuminating, this is a book no serious reader of Asian studies, comparative education or Asian sociology will want to be without.

Women in Asia - Tradition, modernity and globalisation (Paperback): Mina Roces Women in Asia - Tradition, modernity and globalisation (Paperback)
Mina Roces
R1,009 Discovery Miles 10 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Women in Asia: Tradition, Modernity and Globalisation surveys the transformation in the status of women since 1970 in a diverse range of nations: Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, India, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan and Burma. Within these 13 national case studies the book presents new arguments about being women, being Asian and being modern in contemporary Asia.Recent social changes in women's place in society are untangled in recognition that not all change is 'progress' and that not all 'modernity' enhances women's status. The authors suggest that the improvements in women's status within the Asian region vary dramatically according to the manner in which women interact with the particular economic and ideological forces in each nation. Each contributor has focussed on a particular country in their area of expertise. They present innovative arguments relating to the problem of 'being women' in Asia during a period of dramatic social and political changes. Each national case study explores key social and economic markers of women's status such as employment rates, wage differentials, literacy rates and participation in politics or business. The effects of population control programs, legislation on domestic violence and female infanticide, and women's role in the family and the workforce are also discussed. The book poses questions as to how women have negotiated these shifts and in the process created a 'modern' Asian woman.Specialists from a variety of disciplines including history, anthropology, sociology, demography, gender studies and psychology grapple with the complexities and ambivalences presented by the multiple faces of the modern Asian woman. Complete with a list of recommended readings and a web-site with links to electronic resources, the book will be of particular interest to undergraduate students of Asian studies and women's studies as well as scholars and postgraduate students interested in comparative women's studies.

Institutional Islamic Economics and Finance (Hardcover): Ahsan Shafiq Institutional Islamic Economics and Finance (Hardcover)
Ahsan Shafiq
R4,060 Discovery Miles 40 600 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Institutional economics claims that institutions and policies rather than the size of labour force, technology or capital investment are pivotal for growth or under-development. In this regard there are two kinds of institutions: external institutions expressed in the form of laws, organisations, regulations, companies, banks and the like and internal institutions, which are found in the hearts and consciences of individuals. Against this backdrop, this book acquaints readers with the basic concepts related to institutional economics. It then brings to light the theoretical concepts related to the institutional perspectives on Islamic economics, particularly highlighting areas where Islamic economic institutions lay at the crossroads with conventional ones. The book also ref lects upon the organisational arrangements that comply with the basic tenets of Islamic institutional economics. Further, it brings a collection of real-world case studies into discussion to show the models of Islamic institutions that are pragmatic in today's business environment. The book contains novel dimensions on the subject, includes conceptual debates as well as practical examples and explores hot topics such as waqf and fintech from an Islamic perspective. This is the first book to exclusively cover this topic and is written by well-known and respected international economists from the field. Since the book is written in an accessible style and the concepts are expressed in plain language, it will find an audience among academics, researchers and students in economics and Islamic economic studies, as well as policymakers and professionals engaged in the Islamic finance industry, seeking to make their services and products conform to an Islamic institutional perspective.

European Trade Unions in the 21st Century - The Future of Solidarity and Workplace Democracy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Barry... European Trade Unions in the 21st Century - The Future of Solidarity and Workplace Democracy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Barry Colfer
R3,806 Discovery Miles 38 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Trade unions in Europe face a range of cross-cutting challenges. This includes the near-universal contraction in union membership; the related decline of traditionally highly unionised blue-collar industries; and the rise of automation, microprocessing, and digitalisation, which can make it cheaper for employers to invest in machines than to pay humans to work. The breakdown of the standard contract of employment and increasing rates of precarious work have further transformed the world of work. Taken together, this makes any collectivist vision of society, and the notion of solidarity upon which trade unionism is built, difficult to sustain. All this raises tough questions for trade unionists, policy-makers, and researchers alike regarding the future of trade unions, the oldest and largest civil society movement in Europe. The contributions in this volume explore the prospects for union revival across a range of cases, including by focusing on the pursuit of legal remedies and on the opportunities associated with the network society to defend the interests of workers. This interdisciplinary volume includes contributions that consider the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the EU level by researchers coming from a range of disciplines and backgrounds. The volume should especially appeal to researchers and practitioners working in the fields of political science, sociology, law, and business studies.
