With the rise of shared and networked vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and other transportation technologies, technological change is outpacing urban planning and policy. Whether urban planners and policy makers like it or not, these transformations will in turn result in profound changes to streets, land use, and cities. But smarter transportation may not necessarily translate into greater sustainability or equity. There are clear opportunities to shape advances in transportation, and to harness them to reshape cities and improve the socio-economic health of cities and residents. There are opportunities to reduce collisions and improve access to healthcare for those who need it most-particularly high-cost, high-need individuals at the younger and older ends of the age spectrum. There is also potential to connect individuals to jobs and change the way cities organize space and optimize trips. To date, very little discussion has centered around the job and social implications of this technology. Further, policy dialogue on future transport has lagged-particularly in the arenas of sustainability and social justice. Little work has been done on decision-making in this high uncertainty environment-a deficiency that is concerning given that land use and transportation actions have long and lagging timelines. This is one of the first books to explore the impact that emerging transport technology is having on cities and their residents, and how policy is needed to shape the cities that we want to have in the future. The book contains a selection of contributions based on the most advanced empirical research, and case studies for how future transport can be harnessed to improve urban sustainability and justice.

This book examines the driving dynamics of harvesting machines with large harvesting heads. It looks at how to efficiently use these machines. The author explores a common problem that hinders machine performance when harvesting with very large headers. He deals with concepts for reducing the undesired effects of vehicle dynamics when using these machines. With the steadily increasing capacity of harvesting machines, the working widths of the harvesting heads get wider and the headers get heavier. It has become essential with these giant headers to use header height sensors and header control systems to avoid the headers from being run into the ground when encountering elevation changes in the terrain. A fundamental limitation of the viable speed of header height adjustments arises from the combination of the wider and heavier headers with soft agricultural tires. The current solution to find an appropriate speed of header height adjustments is to perform a header calibration whenever a new header is attached to the machine and to endow the machine operator with the capability to tweak the speed of adjustments manually. The result of an inappropriate speed of height adjustments is a reduction in overall productivity and an under-utilization of the harvesting machine. The author looks at ways to prevent this. He offers detailed modeling of the vertical dynamics including dynamic wheel loads. In addition, the book contains results from simulations and machine tests.

This thesis presents a novel ultrasonic instrument for non-invasive and in-situ characterization of journal bearing lubricant viscosity. In particular, the application to journal bearings is described by non-invasively measuring the viscosity and localized power losses throughout operation. This ultrasonic viscometer is based on the reflection of polarized shear waves from a thin resonating coating layer to increase the measurement sensitivity, in comparison to conventional ultrasonic methods. This instrument allows for a full engine oil viscoelastic characterization in-situ. The book investigates the effects of temperature, pressure and shear rate, and describes in detail the ultrasonic setup and method. Further, it demonstrates that the same technique can be applied similarly to monitor the lubrication of other engine components. As such, it offers a unique instrument that can drive the research of oil formulations to improve engine performance and fulfill the requirements of international fuel economy regulations.
The main goal of this book is to show how to modify and optimize the properties of the damping matrix in order to find the most beneficial way of adding damping to a given mechanical system. To this end, a two-degree-of-freedom model of disc brake is analyzed to gain insight into the fundamental physical behavior of damping. In addition, more realistic, high-dimensional finite element brake models are studied and optimized for stability.
David Foerster examines privacy protection for vehicular communication under the assumption of an attacker that is able to compromise back-end systems - motivated by the large number of recent security incidents and revelations about mass surveillance. The author aims for verifiable privacy protection enforced through cryptographic and technical means, which safeguards user data even if back-end systems are not fully trusted. Foerster applies advanced cryptographic concepts, such as anonymous credentials, and introduces a novel decentralized secret sharing algorithm to fulfill complex and seemingly contradicting requirements in several vehicle-to-x application scenarios. Many of the concepts and results can also be applied to other flavors of internet of things systems.
