Chateau Musar - The Story of a Wine Icon (Hardcover): Susan Keevil Chateau Musar - The Story of a Wine Icon (Hardcover)
Susan Keevil
R815 Discovery Miles 8 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Winemaking is never easy - but in the case of Chateau Musar, the most famous wine to come out of Lebanon, there have been times when it has been almost impossibly difficult. Serge Hochar would say 'in Lebanon, difficulties are our habit. We are addicted to difficulties!' and he famously continued to make his wines regardless of the bombing and shelling attacks going on around him. This is his story, and the story of Gaston, Marc, Ralph and Tarek, the new generation that follows him, carrying on the tradition of making wines of charisma and character with minimal interference. It is a tale of our times; winemaking at its most instinctive and natural, inspired by Mother Nature, and resonating powerfully with the spirit of survival that has sustained the Hochars' troubled homeland, Lebanon. With contributions from Kevin Gould, Elizabeth Gilbert, Catherine Miles, Edward Ragg MW, Fongyee Walker MW, Jancis Robinson MW, Michael Broadbent, Steven Spurrier, Andrew Jefford, Bartholomew Broadbent and Susan Keevil, Chateau Musar, The Story of a Wine Icon is the perfect read for those who want to learn more about this incredible wine and delve into the multi-millennia-tradition of Lebanese wine.

Ted Mack and America's First Black-Owned Brewery - The Rise and Fall of Peoples Beer (Paperback): Clint Lanier Ted Mack and America's First Black-Owned Brewery - The Rise and Fall of Peoples Beer (Paperback)
Clint Lanier
R688 Discovery Miles 6 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Born a sharecropper in rural Alabama in 1930, Theodore A. (Ted) Mack, Sr., fought in the Korean War and defied the odds by playing football at Ohio State and earning a college degree. Brewing and selling beer, he believed, would be just another peak to summit. After all, it couldn't be more challenging than his experience in organizing buses to the March on Washington or picketing segregated schools in Milwaukee. This is the story of Mack's purchase of Peoples Brewing Company in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Though he had carefully planned for the historic acquisition, he underestimated the subtle bigotry of middle America, the corruption of the beer industry, and the failures of the Federal Government that plagued his ownership. Mack's ownership of Peoples Brewing is an inspirational story of Black entrepreneurship, innovation and pride at a time when America was at an important racial justice crossroads.

Ontario boasts a potent mix of brewing traditions. Wherever Europeans explored, battled, and settled, beer was not far behind, which brought the simple magic of brewing to Ontario in the 1670s. Early Hudson's Bay Company traders brewed in Canada's Arctic, and Loyalist refugees brought the craft north in the 1780s. Early 1900s temperance activists drove the industry largely underground but couldn't dry up the quest to quench Ontarians' thirst. The heavy regulation that replaced prohibition centralized surviving breweries. Today, independent breweries are booming and writing their own chapters in the Ontario beer story.

Brian Abrams, John Mathias
R382 Discovery Miles 3 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There's the office: President of the United States. And then there's the man in the office--prone to temptation and looking to unwind after a long day running the country. Celebrating the decidedly less distinguished side of the nation's leaders, humor writer Brian Abrams offers a compelling, hilarious, and true American history on the rocks--a Washington-to-Obama, vice-by-vice chronicle of how the presidents like to party. From explicit love letters to slurred speeches to nude swims at Bing Crosby's house, reputations are ruined and secrets bared. George Washington brokered the end of the? American Revolution over glasses of Madeira. Ulysses S. Grant rarely drew a sober breath when he was leading the North to victory. And it wasn't all liquor. Some presidents preferred their drugs--Nixon was a pill-popper. And others chased women instead--both ?the professorial Woodrow Wilson (who signed his love letters "Tiger") and the good ol' boy Bill Clinton, though neither could hold a candle to Kennedy, who also received the infamous Dr. Feelgood's "vitamin" injections of pure amphetamine. Illustrated throughout with infographics (James Garfield's attempts at circumnavigating the temperance movement), comic strips (George Bush Sr.'s infamous televised vomiting incident), caricatures, and fake archival documents, the book has the smart, funny feel of Mad magazine meets The Colbert Report. Plus, it includes recipes for 44 cocktails inspired by each chapter's partier-in-chief.

Award-winning whiskey writer and best-selling author Fred Minnick presents an easy-to-read interactive tasting journey that helps you select barrel-aged bourbons based on your flavor preferences. "The world has been waiting for this book." -Jeffrey Morganthaler, author of The Bar Book and Drinking Distilled In this updated edition of Bourbon Curious: A Tasting Guide for the Savvy Drinker-using the same tasting principles he offers in his Kentucky Derby Museum classes and as a judge at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition-Minnick cuts to the chase, dismissing brand marketing and judging only the flavor of this all-American whiskey. Bourbon Curious groups bourbon into four main flavor profiles-grain, nutmeg, caramel, and cinnamon. While many bourbons boast all four flavor notes, one delicious sensation typically overpowers the rest. This book reveals more than 50 bourbon brands' predominate tastes and suggests cocktail recipes to complement them. In addition, Minnick spends some time busting bourbon's myths; unraveling its mysteries; and exploring distiller secrets, disclosing the recipes you won't find on a bottle's label. This updated edition contains all the best new bourbons and revised tasting notes on any bourbons that have undergone a substantial change since the original edition. And like good-tasting bourbon, Bourbon Curious is approachable to all!

PLANT LAYOUT AND SANITATION - 14. SPOILAGE - 15. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS - INDEX - PREFACE - In this book I have endeavored to present a comprehensive treatment of the manufacture and analysis of carbonated nonalcoholic beverages or carbonated soft drinks as they are commonly called. Each category of the raw materials used in these beverages is considered, namely, sugars and sirups, artificial sweetening agents, acids, water, flavors and flavoring, including specialty and fruit flavors and also flavor emulsions both of the clear and cloudy type, colors and coloring, and carbon dioxide. The actual manufacturing steps are described in detail in the chapter on bottling and canning and, in this connection, bottle washing, caustic solution preparation, plant layout, plant housekeeping, and sanitation are discussed in detail. The composition of the finished beverages by categories is considered. The various types of spoilage that may occur and the means for the prevention of such spoilage are treated in another chapter. Finally the methods of analysis both for control during manufacture and for the determination of composition are detailed. I acknowledge with thanks the cooperation given to me by the American Bottlers of Carbonated Beverages and by several firms. These acknowledgements are given specifically in the text. It may be noted that reference is made to American Bottlers of Carbonated Beverages, the United States Pharmacopeia, and the National Formulary standards and specifications for a number of raw materials. These agencies speak for themselves and their standards are quoted merely as guides for desirable practice. Some beverage, flavor, and color formulations are listed in this book. Some of the compositions mentioned are illustrative of commercial practice while others are of an experimental nature. These formulas have been included to serve as suggestions to the manufacturer; they are not given as a formulary. The application of knowledge of the art and skill may result in the improvement of these formulations. The mention of a particular substance in this book does not in any manner imply that I approve of the use of such a substance.

Shadows in the Vineyard - The True Story of a Plot to Poison the World's Greatest Wine (Hardcover): Maximillian Potter Shadows in the Vineyard - The True Story of a Plot to Poison the World's Greatest Wine (Hardcover)
Maximillian Potter
R761 Discovery Miles 7 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When Maximilian Potter went to Burgundy to report for Vanity Fair on a crime that could have destroyed the Domaine de la Romanee Conti-the tiny, storied vineyard that produces the most expensive, exquisite wines in the world-he soon found a story that was much larger, and more thrilling, than he had originally imagined. In January 2010, Aubert de Villaine, the famed proprietor of the DRC, received an anonymous note threatening the destruction of his priceless vines by poison-a crime that in the world of high-end wine is akin to murder-unless he paid a one million euro ransom. Villaine believed it to be a sick joke, but that proved a fatal miscalculation; the crime was committed and shocked this fabled region of France. The sinister story that Potter uncovered would lead to a sting operation by top Paris detectives, the primary suspect's suicide, and a dramatic trial. This botanical crime threatened to destroy the fiercely traditional culture surrounding the world's greatest wine. Like Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, SHADOW IN THE VINEYARD takes us deep into a captivating world full of fascinating characters, small town French politics, an unforgettable narrative, and a local culture defined by the twinned veins of excess and vitality and the deep reverent attention to the land that run through it.
