Consumer Magazines of the British Isles (Hardcover, New): Sam Riley Consumer Magazines of the British Isles (Hardcover, New)
Sam Riley
R2,472 Discovery Miles 24 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Consumer magazines have a long history in the United Kingdom and Ireland beginning in the seventeenth century, and a number of them that date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are still flourishing. This reference volume offers a representative sample of the current British magazine market, providing detailed profiles of fifty magazines, written mainly by scholars from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, and supplementary data on many others. The separately profiled magazines range from the venerable The Scots Magazine (1739), Spectator (1828), Punch (1841), and The Illustrated London News (1842) to relative newcomers of the 1980s such as Country Living (1985), Prima (1986), Q (1986), and House Beautiful (1989). Included are major circulation leaders like Radio Times, Smash Hits, and Woman's Own, prestigious and influential journals like The Economist and New Scientist, regional magazines like Cumbria and The Dalesman, general interest magazines, and a wide variety of magazines in targeted subject or readership categories, like cars, homes, nature, and sports. Each essay consists of a narrative history from the magazine's founding to the present, concluding with information sources and data on periodicity, publishers, locations of the magazines in the United States, editors, title changes, and circulation. Appendixes list the fifty magazines by date of founding and in subject categories; succinct data on 330 additional British consumer magazines appears in a directory. The volume opens with a concise history of British periodicals. Intended specifically for reference use on British journals, this volume will also be useful for research in journalism history and British cultural history.

Biographical Dictionary of North American Classicists (Hardcover, New): Ward W. Briggs Biographical Dictionary of North American Classicists (Hardcover, New)
Ward W. Briggs
R2,632 Discovery Miles 26 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While European scholarship in the Classics has a long and established tradition, very little has been written on the history of classical scholarship in North America. By providing profiles of some 600 North American Classicists, this reference book presents a starting point for defining the history of Classical scholarship in Canada and the United States. Included are those Classicists who made significant contributions to the field and those who are representative figures. The people profiled were either born in the United States or Canada, or were born in other countries but had careers in North America. They were either founding fathers of the profession, scholars known more for their specialized contributions, or members of smaller or remote institutions who achieved at least regional distinction for their work. The first part of each entry provides basic biographical and professional information. A narrative summary of the person's career follows, and each profile closes with a short bibliography. The entries are arranged in alphabetical order and were written by expert contributors.

Henri Sauguet - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, New): David L. Austin Henri Sauguet - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, New)
David L. Austin
R2,109 Discovery Miles 21 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Henri Sauguet's music remains little known outside his native France and portions of Belgium. Even there a younger generation of listeners and practitioners only vaguely associate his name with the ballet Les Forains, the popular song Le Chemin des forains, and a handful of other minor masterworks. Yet, during his lifetime, impresarios, poets, stage directors, choreographers, and film directors eagerly sought his collaboration on important projects. Henri Sauguet: A Bio-Bibliography is the first English-language book to treat Sauguet not only as a composer, but as a music critic and observer of the French music scene for more than sixty years. No other single source highlights the multi-faceted talents of a man who may be called the grand old man of French music. The volume is organized into five parts, beginning with a brief biography of Sauguet's life. This is followed by the most complete list of works and performances compiled to date. This section is subdivided by genre--operas, ballets, instrumental music, vocal music, electronic music, music for the cinema, stage, and broadcast; each item within a genre chronologically follows the name of that kind of work. Performances appear chronologically with premieres listed first, and a sampling of prose writings and speeches by Sauguet is included. Music and drama reviews are presented separately in chronological order under the name of the journal in which they appeared. The complete discography is organized alphanumerically, an arrangement dictated by record manufacturers' labels and numbers. The bibliography of writings about the composer is organized alphabetically by author with anonymous works inserted alphabetically by title. Two appendixes follow the work proper: organizing the music alphabetically by title, and chronologically to give a clearer picture of the progression and disposition of works during the composer's career. An index of the people, organizations, and events cited throughout completes the volume. Music libraries will want to add this reference work to their collections. Other libraries and scholars with an interest in theatre, media, and French cultural history will also want to acquire this volume.

R2,094 Discovery Miles 20 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This bibliography of bibliographies lists 1,412 books, chapters in book, parts of dissertations, and articles, compiled from 1900 to 1985, which deal with places and subjects of fiction. . . .Hartman and Drost have discovered an impressive number of bibliographies, and the book will be most useful to individuals embarking on research projects dealing with particular topics in fiction, especially graduate students beginning thesis research. Choice Presenting topics and themes in fiction is a challenge because of the subjective nature of literary criticism. This fully documented bibliography is an impressive compilation of sources that is annotated and more detailed than other bibliographies of this nature. The reader will find over 1400 citations to bibliographies of persons, places, and themes in fiction, gathered from books, parts of books, dissertations, pamphlets, and periodicals. Specific titles of novels and short stories are not cited. Listed alphabetically by author, citations are limited to works of English-language adult fiction. Ibn Khallikan's Biographical Dictionary, Vol. II (in 4 Volumes) (Hardcover): Ibn Khallikan Ibn Khallikan's Biographical Dictionary, Vol. II (in 4 Volumes) (Hardcover)
Ibn Khallikan; Translated by William Macguckin De Slane
R1,407 Discovery Miles 14 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ibn Khallikan's Biographical Dictionary, or Deaths of Eminent Men and History of the Sons of the Epoch, was the noted Arabic scholar Ibn Khallikan's most well-known and respected work. The author worked on the tome from 1256 to 1274, compiling names, genealogies, and histories of prominent or conspicuous men in the Islamic world. The final work was translated into English by William MacGuckin de Slane and is longer than 2,700 pages. It has been quoted by many Arabic rhetoricians and grammarians in other works, as it is considered one of the most important records of Arabic history ever written. Here, separated into four volumes, the Biographical Dictionary is an essential work for any student of Muslim culture and literature. Volume II includes: An Introduction by Mac Guckin de Slane; a detailed index of all biographies; notes from the translator for each biography; and detailed genealogies of hundreds of Muslim figures, including Ibn Babak the Poet, As-Sulaihi, Malik Ibn Dinar, and Ar-Rabai the Grammarian. IBN KHALLIKAN (1211-1282) was a thirteenth century Arabic scholar who studied in Damascus, Mosul and Aleppo, specializing in the fields of language, theology, and law, including jurisprudence. He became a well-respected judge in Cairo, eventually becoming a chief judge in Damascus in 1261. Khallikan wrote several books, but his most well known was Deaths of Eminent Men and History of the Sons of the Epoch, often referred to as the "Biographical Dictionary," which took him almost 20 years to complete. Khallikan retired from his position as judge just before his death in 1282. He was one of the most well-known historians and theologians in Egypt.

Research in Basic Writing - A Bibliographic Sourcebook (Hardcover): Martin Jacobi, Michael G Moran Research in Basic Writing - A Bibliographic Sourcebook (Hardcover)
Martin Jacobi, Michael G Moran
R2,105 Discovery Miles 21 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This reference handbook surveys research on the central issue associated with the teaching of unprepared writers. Though basic writing has only been recognized as a distinct area of teaching and research since 1975, the existing bibliographic texts already seem limited due to their age or lack of annotation. This volume provides current and extensive bibliographic essays and will help to define this new field of study for teachers and researchers.

Following an introduction that summarizes the origins and significant texts in basic writing, the book is divided into three sections, Social Science Perspectives, Linguistic Perspectives, and Pedagogical Perspectives. The first section, which contains three essays, views the field through the lens of social, psychological, and political issues. The second section, also containing three essays, examines contributions made from studies of grammar, dialects, and second-language acquisition. The third section, in its four essays, focuses on the design, development, administration, and evaluation of basic writing courses, the use of computers in basic writing classrooms, the role of the writing lab, and the preparation of basic writing teachers. An appendix that reviews current textbooks for basic writing courses is also included, as well as an index. This book will be a valuable resource for teachers of basic writing, in education courses and workshops that train teachers and tutors, and in fields such as linguistics, technical writing, and Teaching English as a Second Language. It will also be an important addition to public and university libraries and many education programs.

The Russian Revolution, 1905-1921 - A Bibliographic Guide to Works in English (Hardcover): Murray Frame The Russian Revolution, 1905-1921 - A Bibliographic Guide to Works in English (Hardcover)
Murray Frame
R2,472 Discovery Miles 24 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides the first fully comprehensive bibliography of English-language literature on what was, arguably, the most important historical event of the 20th century. It brings together for the first time the multitude of monographs, articles, and dissertations on various aspects of the Russian Revolution that have been published from 1905 to mid-1994. While the bibliography conceives the Revolution as the period of transition from tsarist Russia to Soviet Russia, a process that occured between 1905 and 1921, it seeks not only to list works central to that process, but to list all works relevant to that period of Russian history.

The bibliography contains 24 thematic sections covering all subjects from politics and society, to education and the arts. Thus there are categories devoted not only to the tsarist establishment and the Red Army, but to science and technology during the revolutionary years. Most of the thematic sections have subsections which seek to divide the history of the Russian Revolution into its component parts in a manner that will be familiar to specialists and accessible to students. There are indexes of authors and subjects, as well as a detailed list of contents, all designed to facilitate quick and easy use of the bibliography.

The Artists of De Stijl - A Guide to the Literature (Hardcover, Annotated edition): Donald Langmead The Artists of De Stijl - A Guide to the Literature (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
Donald Langmead
R2,530 Discovery Miles 25 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This guide summarizes and evaluates the available literature concerning the Dutch artistic movement De Stijl, which was headed by art critic and painter Theo van Doesburg and was comprised of such architects and artists as J.J.P. Oud, Piet Mondrian, Rovbert van 't Hoff and Georges Vantongerloo. The loose-knit group took its name from the avant garde journal they first published in October 1917: "De Stijl" (The Style). Although it was limited to Holland, De Stijl promoted ideas about a universal art, combining tenets of theosophy, an holistic view of the oneness of all things, including arts and culture, and socialism. This bibliography examines publications that deal with the movement and with affiliated groups and individual members.

Art historians and scholars of modern and of Dutch art and architecture will appreciate this comprehensive tool for further research. Within individual sections for the movement and for its members, entries are chronologically arranged with separate categories for books, monographs and catalogs, and periodicals. A final section analyzes and presents the contents of the journal "De Stijl."

The volume also includes a short chronology of Adams' life and author and subject indexes.

The Complete Works of Charles Dickens (in 30 Volumes, Illustrated) - The Uncommercial Traveller (Hardcover): Charles Dickens The Complete Works of Charles Dickens (in 30 Volumes, Illustrated) - The Uncommercial Traveller (Hardcover)
Charles Dickens
R1,149 Discovery Miles 11 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It is impossible to overstate the importance of British novelist CHARLES DICKENS (1812-1870) not only to literature in the English language, but to Western civilization on the whole. He is arguably the first fiction writer to have become an international celebrity. He popularized episodic fiction and the cliffhanger, which had a profound influence on the development of film and television. He is entirely responsible for the popular image of Victorian London that still lingers today, and his characters-from Oliver Twist to Ebenezer Scrooge, from Miss Havisham to Uriah Heep-have become not merely iconic, but mythic. But it was his stirring portraits of ordinary people-not the upper classes or the aristocracy-and his fervent cries for social, moral, and legal justice for the working poor, and in particular for poor children, in the grim early decades of the Industrial Revolution that powerfully impacted social concerns well into the 20th century. Without Charles Dickens, we may never have seen the likes of Sherlock Holmes, Upton Sinclair, or even Bob Dylan. Here, in 30 beautiful volumes-complete with all the original illustrations-is every published word written by one of the most important writers ever. The essential collector's set will delight anyone who cherishes English literature...and who takes pleasure in constantly rediscovering its joys. This volume contains The Uncommercial Traveller, a collection of short stories first published by Dickens in his own journal, All the Year Round, in the early 1860s. Excellent examples of the author's good humor and propensity for satire, they are also beloved by readers for their autobiographical elements, offering readers a peek at the man behind the stories.

Francis Poulenc - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition): George Keck Francis Poulenc - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
George Keck
R2,855 Discovery Miles 28 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Francis Poulenc: A Bio-Bibliography" is a thorough presentation of the works of this often performed and critically appreciated 20th-century composer. George R. Keck traces events in Poulenc's life and offers a list of works and performances with the primary focus on those facts and influences which contributed to the development of the composer's distinctive musical style. Included in the text is a substantial discography as well as annotated entries by and about the composer which cover every phase of his career and affirm Poulenc's place in 20th-century music.

The highly selective annotated bibliography comprises the major portion of the text. Since Keck's documentation of the development of Poulenc's style covers only representative works, he includes a list of all of Poulenc's compositions, arranged both alphabetically and chronologically, in the two appendixes. A complete index of names, places, and titles concludes the book.

Sam Rayburn - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, New edition): Anthony Martin Champagne Sam Rayburn - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, New edition)
Anthony Martin Champagne
R2,485 Discovery Miles 24 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of the nation's most effective congressional leaders, Sam Rayburn served as Speaker of the House longer than anyone in U.S. history. Although he has been the subject of several biographies and numerous articles, until now no comprehensive analysis of Rayburn has integrated these disparate materials in a single resource. Sam Rayburn: A Bio-Bibliography accomplishes that objective. Designed for scholars interested in the life and historical period of Sam Rayburn, the volume includes a detailed biographical sketch and an extensive annotated bibliography describing the Rayburn resource materials. The bibliographic entries are divided into three parts: works about Rayburn, Rayburn as author, and archival sources. Because Rayburn wrote little, the inclusion of some 80 oral histories by friends and associates of Rayburn is an especially valuable feature for the researcher. Those papers by Rayburn that do exist are included and fully annotated here. The section covering works about Rayburn includes media coverage of the Congressman, interviews with Rayburn's colleagues, and memoirs as well as books and articles about Rayburn. A chronology is included for quick reference to major events in Rayburn's life and a complete index facilitates easy access to the main entries.
