Consumer magazines have a long history in the United Kingdom and Ireland beginning in the seventeenth century, and a number of them that date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are still flourishing. This reference volume offers a representative sample of the current British magazine market, providing detailed profiles of fifty magazines, written mainly by scholars from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, and supplementary data on many others. The separately profiled magazines range from the venerable The Scots Magazine (1739), Spectator (1828), Punch (1841), and The Illustrated London News (1842) to relative newcomers of the 1980s such as Country Living (1985), Prima (1986), Q (1986), and House Beautiful (1989). Included are major circulation leaders like Radio Times, Smash Hits, and Woman's Own, prestigious and influential journals like The Economist and New Scientist, regional magazines like Cumbria and The Dalesman, general interest magazines, and a wide variety of magazines in targeted subject or readership categories, like cars, homes, nature, and sports. Each essay consists of a narrative history from the magazine's founding to the present, concluding with information sources and data on periodicity, publishers, locations of the magazines in the United States, editors, title changes, and circulation. Appendixes list the fifty magazines by date of founding and in subject categories; succinct data on 330 additional British consumer magazines appears in a directory. The volume opens with a concise history of British periodicals. Intended specifically for reference use on British journals, this volume will also be useful for research in journalism history and British cultural history.
This bibliography of bibliographies lists 1,412 books, chapters in book, parts of dissertations, and articles, compiled from 1900 to 1985, which deal with places and subjects of fiction. . . .Hartman and Drost have discovered an impressive number of bibliographies, and the book will be most useful to individuals embarking on research projects dealing with particular topics in fiction, especially graduate students beginning thesis research. Choice Presenting topics and themes in fiction is a challenge because of the subjective nature of literary criticism. This fully documented bibliography is an impressive compilation of sources that is annotated and more detailed than other bibliographies of this nature. The reader will find over 1400 citations to bibliographies of persons, places, and themes in fiction, gathered from books, parts of books, dissertations, pamphlets, and periodicals. Specific titles of novels and short stories are not cited. Listed alphabetically by author, citations are limited to works of English-language adult fiction. A detailed subject index which provides access to literary themes, occupations, people, and places, and a joint author index aids in cross-referencing. Researchers, English teachers, and students of literature will find Themes and Settings in Fiction an indispensable resource.
This annotated bibliography is the first to trace the history of the Writing Across the Curriculum Movement (WAC) and to assess the state of scholarship and pedagogy on the subject today. Professors Anson, Schwiebert, and Williamson carefully describe 1067 important sources taken from bibliographies, books, monographs, journals, textbooks, and other documents. Their research guide reviews the history and implementation of WAC, research and theoretical studies, and the teaching of writing across the curriculum in general and in diverse fields. Author and subject indexes provide easy access to the reference materials for the use of researchers in composition, education, arts and humanities, physical, social and behavioral sciences, and business.
The fourth volume in a history of photography, this is a bibliography of books on the subject.
This reference handbook surveys research on the central issue associated with the teaching of unprepared writers. Though basic writing has only been recognized as a distinct area of teaching and research since 1975, the existing bibliographic texts already seem limited due to their age or lack of annotation. This volume provides current and extensive bibliographic essays and will help to define this new field of study for teachers and researchers. Following an introduction that summarizes the origins and significant texts in basic writing, the book is divided into three sections, Social Science Perspectives, Linguistic Perspectives, and Pedagogical Perspectives. The first section, which contains three essays, views the field through the lens of social, psychological, and political issues. The second section, also containing three essays, examines contributions made from studies of grammar, dialects, and second-language acquisition. The third section, in its four essays, focuses on the design, development, administration, and evaluation of basic writing courses, the use of computers in basic writing classrooms, the role of the writing lab, and the preparation of basic writing teachers. An appendix that reviews current textbooks for basic writing courses is also included, as well as an index. This book will be a valuable resource for teachers of basic writing, in education courses and workshops that train teachers and tutors, and in fields such as linguistics, technical writing, and Teaching English as a Second Language. It will also be an important addition to public and university libraries and many education programs.
This book provides the first fully comprehensive bibliography of English-language literature on what was, arguably, the most important historical event of the 20th century. It brings together for the first time the multitude of monographs, articles, and dissertations on various aspects of the Russian Revolution that have been published from 1905 to mid-1994. While the bibliography conceives the Revolution as the period of transition from tsarist Russia to Soviet Russia, a process that occured between 1905 and 1921, it seeks not only to list works central to that process, but to list all works relevant to that period of Russian history. The bibliography contains 24 thematic sections covering all subjects from politics and society, to education and the arts. Thus there are categories devoted not only to the tsarist establishment and the Red Army, but to science and technology during the revolutionary years. Most of the thematic sections have subsections which seek to divide the history of the Russian Revolution into its component parts in a manner that will be familiar to specialists and accessible to students. There are indexes of authors and subjects, as well as a detailed list of contents, all designed to facilitate quick and easy use of the bibliography.

Following a long and distinguished public career, John Adams had a turbulent presidency. Sandwiched between the presidencies of Washington and Jefferson, Adams received less attention from contemporary writers. Since the 1960s, however, scholars have begun to turn their attention to John Adams. This bibliography provides access to both primary sources and the secondary literature on John Adams. The volume also includes a short chronology of Adams' life and author and subject indexes.

This guide summarizes and evaluates the available literature concerning the Dutch artistic movement De Stijl, which was headed by art critic and painter Theo van Doesburg and was comprised of such architects and artists as J.J.P. Oud, Piet Mondrian, Rovbert van 't Hoff and Georges Vantongerloo. The loose-knit group took its name from the avant garde journal they first published in October 1917: "De Stijl" (The Style). Although it was limited to Holland, De Stijl promoted ideas about a universal art, combining tenets of theosophy, an holistic view of the oneness of all things, including arts and culture, and socialism. This bibliography examines publications that deal with the movement and with affiliated groups and individual members. Art historians and scholars of modern and of Dutch art and architecture will appreciate this comprehensive tool for further research. Within individual sections for the movement and for its members, entries are chronologically arranged with separate categories for books, monographs and catalogs, and periodicals. A final section analyzes and presents the contents of the journal "De Stijl."
This reference provides a detailed overview of the work of Betty Comden and Adolph Green, who for over fifty years have collaborated on skits, musicals, revues, and films. The book begins with a biography and a chronology, which serve as a summary of the major events in their lives and careers. Then there are six sections detailing their work on Broadway. Other sections then document their radio and film work. The sections contain entries for all of the productions with which Comden and Green were involved, and the entries provide full information about the performances, including cast lists, plot summaries, reviews, and commentaries. These sections are followed by an extensive bibliography and an appendix that lists the awards and nominations that Comden and Green and their works have received. A thorough index adds to the usefulness of the book.

"Francis Poulenc: A Bio-Bibliography" is a thorough presentation of the works of this often performed and critically appreciated 20th-century composer. George R. Keck traces events in Poulenc's life and offers a list of works and performances with the primary focus on those facts and influences which contributed to the development of the composer's distinctive musical style. Included in the text is a substantial discography as well as annotated entries by and about the composer which cover every phase of his career and affirm Poulenc's place in 20th-century music. The highly selective annotated bibliography comprises the major portion of the text. Since Keck's documentation of the development of Poulenc's style covers only representative works, he includes a list of all of Poulenc's compositions, arranged both alphabetically and chronologically, in the two appendixes. A complete index of names, places, and titles concludes the book.
Ibn Khallikan's Biographical Dictionary, or Deaths of Eminent Men and History of the Sons of the Epoch, was the noted Arabic scholar Ibn Khallikan's most well-known and respected work. The author worked on the tome from 1256 to 1274, compiling names, genealogies, and histories of prominent or conspicuous men in the Islamic world. The final work was translated into English by William MacGuckin de Slane and is longer than 2,700 pages. It has been quoted by many Arabic rhetoricians and grammarians in other works, as it is considered one of the most important records of Arabic history ever written. Here, separated into four volumes, the Biographical Dictionary is an essential work for any student of Muslim culture and literature. Volume II includes: An Introduction by Mac Guckin de Slane; a detailed index of all biographies; notes from the translator for each biography; and detailed genealogies of hundreds of Muslim figures, including Ibn Babak the Poet, As-Sulaihi, Malik Ibn Dinar, and Ar-Rabai the Grammarian. IBN KHALLIKAN (1211-1282) was a thirteenth century Arabic scholar who studied in Damascus, Mosul and Aleppo, specializing in the fields of language, theology, and law, including jurisprudence. He became a well-respected judge in Cairo, eventually becoming a chief judge in Damascus in 1261. Khallikan wrote several books, but his most well known was Deaths of Eminent Men and History of the Sons of the Epoch, often referred to as the "Biographical Dictionary," which took him almost 20 years to complete. Khallikan retired from his position as judge just before his death in 1282. He was one of the most well-known historians and theologians in Egypt.

This volume is designed as a general reference tool for the study of the history of Massachusetts. The only book of its type, the volume focuses largely on local history, emphasizing the new social history, and containing biographies of leading figures. Since Massachusetts history and U.S. history largely intertwined during the colonial and early national period, the book provides information on trends in early American history, and provides scholars and other interested readers with an up-to-date summary of major works and important interpretations of each period and of relevant themes, such as urban history, women in history, and oral history.
One of the nation's most effective congressional leaders, Sam Rayburn served as Speaker of the House longer than anyone in U.S. history. Although he has been the subject of several biographies and numerous articles, until now no comprehensive analysis of Rayburn has integrated these disparate materials in a single resource. Sam Rayburn: A Bio-Bibliography accomplishes that objective. Designed for scholars interested in the life and historical period of Sam Rayburn, the volume includes a detailed biographical sketch and an extensive annotated bibliography describing the Rayburn resource materials. The bibliographic entries are divided into three parts: works about Rayburn, Rayburn as author, and archival sources. Because Rayburn wrote little, the inclusion of some 80 oral histories by friends and associates of Rayburn is an especially valuable feature for the researcher. Those papers by Rayburn that do exist are included and fully annotated here. The section covering works about Rayburn includes media coverage of the Congressman, interviews with Rayburn's colleagues, and memoirs as well as books and articles about Rayburn. A chronology is included for quick reference to major events in Rayburn's life and a complete index facilitates easy access to the main entries.
It is impossible to overstate the importance of British novelist CHARLES DICKENS (1812-1870) not only to literature in the English language, but to Western civilization on the whole. He is arguably the first fiction writer to have become an international celebrity. He popularized episodic fiction and the cliffhanger, which had a profound influence on the development of film and television. He is entirely responsible for the popular image of Victorian London that still lingers today, and his characters-from Oliver Twist to Ebenezer Scrooge, from Miss Havisham to Uriah Heep-have become not merely iconic, but mythic. But it was his stirring portraits of ordinary people-not the upper classes or the aristocracy-and his fervent cries for social, moral, and legal justice for the working poor, and in particular for poor children, in the grim early decades of the Industrial Revolution that powerfully impacted social concerns well into the 20th century. Without Charles Dickens, we may never have seen the likes of Sherlock Holmes, Upton Sinclair, or even Bob Dylan. Here, in 30 beautiful volumes-complete with all the original illustrations-is every published word written by one of the most important writers ever. The essential collector's set will delight anyone who cherishes English literature...and who takes pleasure in constantly rediscovering its joys. This volume contains The Uncommercial Traveller, a collection of short stories first published by Dickens in his own journal, All the Year Round, in the early 1860s. Excellent examples of the author's good humor and propensity for satire, they are also beloved by readers for their autobiographical elements, offering readers a peek at the man behind the stories.
Malcolm Arnold's music encompassed a variety of forms from opera and ballet through orchestral and chamber music to film scores. His most famous film score, for which he won an Oscar award in 1957, is The Bridge on the River Kwai. In 1953 he was commissioned to compose Homage to the Queen, a ballet to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Arnold was knighted by the Queen in 1993 in honor of his contributions to English music. As with the other volumes in the Greenwood Bio-Bibliographies in Music series, this work includes a brief biography, discography, complete list of works and performances, and an annotated bibliography. Music scholars, musicians, and those with an interest in the music of Malcolm Arnold will appreciate the extensive information gathered in this one volume. Since Malcolm Arnold has retired from composing, this book features the most complete list of his compositions, including some of his newly discovered early works. The works are listed alphabetically within genre. The author also provides a chronological listing of the works through which trends and developments in Arnold's compositions may be traced. Sir Malcolm Arnold's input with the project assures the accuracy and completeness of this bio-bibliography.
The Removal of the Five Tribes from what is now the Southeastern part of the United States to the area that would become the state of Oklahoma is a topic widely researched and studied. In this annotated bibliography, Herman A. Peterson has gathered together studies in history, ethnohistory, ethnography, anthropology, sociology, rhetoric, and archaeology that pertain to the Removal. The focus of this bibliography is on published, peer-reviewed, scholarly secondary source material and published primary source documents that are easily available. The period under closest scrutiny extends from the passage of the Indian Removal Act in 1830 to the end of the Third Seminole War in 1842. However, works directly relevant to the events leading up to the Removal, as well as those concerned with the direct aftermath of Removal in Indian Territory, are also included. This bibliography is divided into six sections, one for each of the tribes, as well as a general section for works that encompass more than one tribe or address Indian Removal as a policy. Each section is further divided by topic, and within each section the works are listed chronologically, showing the development of the literature on that topic over time. The Trail of Tears: An Annotated Bibliography of Southeastern Indian Removal is a valuable resource for anyone researching this subject.
Within the past decade paperback books have gained respectability among bibliophiles and scholars of popular culture. One of the most collectible runs of paperbacks by a single publisher is the 2,168 Dell Paperbacks produced between 1942 and May, 1962. During that period Dell books were grouped into distinct series and retained an identifiable look. In this catalog-index each of the paperbacks is entered separately in the catalog of series listings. Main entries include the full title and subtitle of the book, the author's byline, head or title notes, pagination, printing date and size of the print run, publication date (if known), identification of the cover artist, full annotation of the back cover map when appropriate, and other annotations such as contents of collections and anthologies, and identification of ghost writers. The bibliography also indexes anonymous titles, subjects, maps, geographical areas, motion picture, television, and play tie-ins, actors and actresses pictured on Dell covers, special series, and advance blurbs.

This volume fills a conspicuous gap in the literature by providing the first resource guide devoted solely to Irish research collections located on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Organized geographically, the book covers the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Ireland and provides comprehensive information about significant Irish collections in such areas as literature, history, current events, biography, Celtic studies, and the arts. Fully indexed and cross referenced, the guide will enable researchers to discover what is available and where it is located, systematically plan itineraries for visiting collections, and better determine duplication among collections. |
