The fifty-ninth volume of "Studies in Bibliography" continues its tradition of presenting a wide range of articles by international scholars on bibliography, textual criticism, and other aspects of the study of books. This volume opens with an excerpt from a forthcoming memoir by the eminent bibliographical and textual scholar G. Thomas Tanselle. Articles range in topic from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century and from manuscript production to the distribution of books by American bookstores. In a tour de force of bibliographical analysis, one piece examines the implications of inked pages that leave their images on adjacent leaves, and another provides new insights into the vexed question of the canon of Daniel Defoe. An advertisement for an early piracy of writings by Mark Twain and Bret Harte provides a springboard for a deeply contextual essay that demonstrates the complex interrelationships of the world of publishing and authorship, while another article on nineteenth-century books brings to light rare bindings issued by a major English publisher. Among the articles and their authors are: "Extracts from The Living Room: A Memoir," G. Thomas Tanselle, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation; "Merton College, MS 68: Production and Texts," Ralph Hanna, Keble College, Oxford; "Beyond Furbank and Owens: A New Consideration of the Evidence for the 'Defoe' Canon," Ashley Marshall, University of Nevada, Reno; "Offset Evidence in Edward Young's The Centaur Not Fabulous," James E. May, Penn State University, DuBois; "Mark Twain and Bret Harte: A Mysterious Early Piracy in Context," Richard Bucci, Mark Twain Project; "Wilkie Collins in Smith, Elder Boards 1865-66," Geoffrey Hargreaves; "Directories of American Bookstores to 1950: Addenda & Corrigenda," Michael Winship, University of Texas at Austin. The most comprehensive, enlightening reference ever published on the history of investment theory and asset pricing "Mark Rubinstein's A History of the Theory of Investments is a
lucid account of fundamental contributions in economics, finance,
and probability theory that have profoundly influenced modern
investment theory and shaped the capital and derivatives markets.
Written by a leading financial economist, this kaleidoscope of
ideas provides fascinating reading for students of investments and
practitioners alike." "This exceptional book provides valuable insights into the
evolution of financial economics from the perspective of a major
player." "As usual, Professor Rubinstein provides a unique perspective on
scholarly research in finance. His annotated bibliography is
insightful and sets the record straight about the origins of many
important concepts." "Not only does Mark Rubinstein bring to light unexpected early
sources (showing that economists have frequently misattributed
fundamental contributions), but he also provides a remarkably
readable and concise synthesis of the current state of financial
thought. This book is far more than a simple history, and should be
on every serious thinker's shelf."
From scouring flea markets and eBay to maxing out their credit cards, record collectors will do just about anything to score a long-sought-after album. In Vinyl Freak, music writer, curator, and collector John Corbett burrows deep inside the record fiend's mind, documenting and reflecting on his decades-long love affair with vinyl. Discussing more than 200 rare and out-of-print LPs, Vinyl Freak is composed in part of Corbett's long-running DownBeat magazine column of the same name, which was devoted to records that had not appeared on CD. In other essays where he combines memoir and criticism, Corbett considers the current vinyl boom, explains why vinyl is his preferred medium, profiles collector subcultures, and recounts his adventures assembling the Alton Abraham Sun Ra Archive, an event so all-consuming that he claims it cured his record-collecting addiction. Perfect for vinyl newbies and veteran crate diggers alike, Vinyl Freak plumbs the motivations that drive Corbett and collectors everywhere.

Most of the literature is books, articles in journals and magazines, dissertations and theses, and essays or chapters in Festschriften, treatises, and biographies. In addition to the core literature obscure citations are also included when they are the only studies in a particular field. In addition to being printed, this volume is also for the first time available online. The online environment allows for information to be updated as new research is introduced. This database of information is a "live" resource, fully searchable, and with active links. The library at Hereford Cathedral is famous as one of the few surviving chained libraries'; but the contents of the books secured to the seventeenth century presses are less well known. There are 227 western manuscripts, of which about half have been at the cathedral since before the Reformation. They range in date from the eighth to the fifteenth century, and include finely-illustrated patristic books of the twelfth century, a large collection of Oxford University legal textbooks, and books of civil and canon law from the end of the thirteenth century. Over half the volumes survive in largely intact medieval bindings. The catalogue, begun by the late Sir Roger Mynors and completed by Professor Thomson, reflects the particular strengths of the collection. The many glossed books are described using a particularly effective system devised by Sir Roger Mynors. An introductory essay by Michael Gullick describes the medieval bindings, and the plates cover not only illumination and bindings, but medieval pressmarks and ownership inscriptions, as well as examples of scripts.
Collection of 277 litle-known medieval manuscripts, second only in number to Durham; special strengths are scholastic theology, biblical studies and sermons 13c-15c, and early music. Worcester Cathedral Library contains 277 medieval manuscripts, the largest number of any English cathedral except Durham. Most of them belonged to the pre-Reformation Cathedral Priory and date between the eleventh and late fifteenth centuries. The collection has never been adequately catalogued before, and is consequently little known; much of the contents of the books, their physical features and history, is here described for the first time. The libraryis rich in late medieval theology and sermon-literature. Many of the books are important because of their connections with Oxford University, and constitute a valuable source for the history of studies there after c.1300. The Worcester monks tended to annotate and write their names in their books, and some seventy of them are identified. Great treasures are the Worcester Antiphoner, and the fragments of early polyphonic music, some newly-discovered and described for the first time. About half the books are in their medieval bindings, including the second-oldest intact Anglo-Saxon binding. These are described individually, and the history of binding at the Cathedral Priory traced, by Michael Gullick. The rest of the Introduction is devoted to the history of the books and library to the early 1600s. There are indexes of incipits and of manuscripts other than those catalogued, as well as a general index.R.M. THOMSON is Emeritus Professor of History, University of Tasmania; MICHAEL GULLICK..Other Cathedral library catalogues; Catalogue of the Manuscripts of Hereford Cathedral Library and Catalogue of the Manuscripts of Lincoln Cathedral Chapter Library.

David J. Supino traces in unprecedented detail the lineaments of Joseph Conrad's authorial career and the fortunes (and misfortunes) of his publishers on both sides of the Atlantic. This work is a model of the integrative scholarly method, combining close bibliographical scrutiny of particular textual artifacts with archival recovery of book-historical information in as much detail as the surviving documents allow. The book is essential reading not only for students of Conrad but also for all those who wish to understand the publishing history of this era.
There are way more than 100 Great Rock Albums, and placing them in some kind of order is incredibly difficult. Music is not a competition and there are no hard and fast criteria by which to judge the greatness of an album. All you can do is measure popularity, the artistic currency a record currently has with critics or the public. So what, then, is the point of this, The 100 Greatest Rock Albums to Own on Vinyl? Think of it as a curation, an opinion poll, a beginner's guide, a celebration of some of the greatest music ever made, and a snapshot of a time. Nothing here is set in stone, and if we do this again the results will almost definitely be different. But right now, in 2020, these are the 100 albums that rock fans will want to own on Vinyl. The result is this book dedicated to some of the greatest records ever made, the albums that have soundtracked the lives of generations. When we were making this, we listened to each and every one of them. Far from being a difficult slog through music we've listened to a thousand times, it reminded us of why we love rock music so much. We hope it will do the same for you the same for you.
Originally published in 1984, the field of research on teaching had expanded dramatically in the 15 years covered by this bibliography, 1965 to 1980. The expansion had included studies conducted for many purposes. This bibliography contains relevant citations to the research which has been conducted for the purposes of increasing our understanding of the science, art and craft of teaching. The existence of research publications has been documented with relevant reference information and brief annotations; there has been no attempt to evaluate the quality of the studies. A brief perusal of the bibliography provides an indication of the range of topics addressed by these studies and also of the variety of studies within a single topic. |
