Lloyd Alexander - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition): James S. Jacobs, Michael O Tunnell Lloyd Alexander - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
James S. Jacobs, Michael O Tunnell
R1,376 Discovery Miles 13 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Lloyd Alexander--A Bio-Bibliography" profiles both the professional career and private life of this prolific author, winner of both the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award. Although best known and loved for his children's books, Lloyd Alexander also has been a regular contributor to magazines, anthologies, textbooks, and professional journals, all of which are documented in this comprehensive volume.

A biographical glimpse into Alexander's early life reveals a youngster impassioned by books and touches upon the influences that shaped his sensibilities and encouraged his creativity to flourish. A list of writings by Alexander for both young and adult audiences as well as writings and audiovisual media about him comprise the annotated bibliography that follows. Illustrations, unpublished speeches, translations by Alexander, dissertations, book reviews, and monographs describing his work are just some of the works cited. In order to provide as thorough a recording of primary and secondary source materials as possible, most citations contain full bibliographical information; however, rather than omit an entry for lack of complete documentation, a small number of references are only partially covered. Dates of awards conferred and a Lloyd Alexander chronology appear in the appendixes, and a full index concludes the work.

Enrique Granados - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition): Carol A. Hess Enrique Granados - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
Carol A. Hess
R2,117 Discovery Miles 21 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Enrique Granados (1867-1916) was one of the first modern Spanish composers to achieve international recognition. During a 1916 visit to the United States his opera Goyescas was premiered by the Metropolitan Opera and his symphonic poem, Dante, by the Chicago Symphony. Granados was also especially admired in Paris, where he knew Saint-Saens, d'Indy, and Faure. He had composed a remarkable body of work and was also at the height of his career as a concert pianist at his untimely death while a passenger on a torpedoed British ship. The biographical study, the first in English, draws on primary sources in English, Spanish, French, Catalan, and other languages. This material is carefully documented in the extensive annotated bibliography along with contemporaneous and recent analytical studies and other sources. Granados's oeuvre presents cataloging problems due to his habit of reworking pieces, long-delayed publication, and arbitrary opus numbers. In the Works and Performances section, however, every effort has been made to offer publication dates, manuscript locations, and information on premieres. Representative arrangements of his works by other composers are also given. An appendix classifies the works by scoring. A selective discography is also provided, and all parts of the volume are fully cross-referenced and indexed. Granados is placed in the context of the international artistic scene at the turn of the century, and a chronology notes related events.

New Testament Christology - A Critical Assessment and Annotated Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition): Arland J. Hultgren New Testament Christology - A Critical Assessment and Annotated Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
Arland J. Hultgren
R2,548 Discovery Miles 25 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The New Testament doctrine of the dual nature of Jesus Christ--his historical existence as a man and his simultaneous reality as a god--has stimulated a resurgence of christological studies by twentieth-century scholars and theologians. This bibliography is the first work to provide a thorough critical examination of this important body of modern scholarship. Containing more than 1,900 annotated entries, it will be an essential reference guide for anyone with an interest in early Christianity, Christian doctrine, or biblical studies. In his introduction, Hultgren summarizes trends in New Testament christology as reflected in twentieth-century European, British, and American works. Sensitively arranged in subject categories, the bibliography begins with nine chapters relating to the foundations of christological studies. The remaining forty-one chapters are divided into three sections dealing with specific topics: the titles given to Christ, the treatment of Christ by New Testament writers, and primary christological themes. Many of the entries include extensive commentary as well as passages quoted from the sources. Authors, titles, and subjects are listed in comprehensive indexes. Reflecting both the depth and breadth of Dr. Hultgren's scholarly analysis, this new bibliography is an appropriate choice for New Testament scholars as well as library reference collections.

Salsa and Related Genres - A Bibliographical Guide (Hardcover): Rafael Figueroa Salsa and Related Genres - A Bibliographical Guide (Hardcover)
Rafael Figueroa
R1,374 Discovery Miles 13 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Latin sound called salsa, or, more correctly, Afro-Hispanic music of the Antilles, is a vital force on the international contemporary music scene. Having followed the same path as did other popular music genres, such as jazz, from ethnic origins to urban underground and on to worldwide acceptance, salsa has recently also become a subject of academic study. Here Figueroa presents materials about salsa and related musical genres that are accessible in the non-Latin world, with an emphasis on English-language sources. Attempting to serve the varied interests of the musicologist and the anthropologist, the journalist and music critic, the musician and the listener, this bibliographical guide documents useful data in books, articles, dissertations, encyclopedia entries, videos, recordings, liner notes, and reviews. Included are certain Hispanic publications, self-published books, and materials for musicians not readily classified in libraries or entered in indexing sources. Entries here are organized by subject and grouped within four broad sections, proceeding from sources covering whole areas or countries, to those on specific styles, genres, and rhythms, to those with biographical information, and to topics related to playing, teaching, or arranging for the various instruments. Author-title and subject indexes complete the work.

Osman M. Galal, Gail G. Harrison, Mary Mohs
R2,137 Discovery Miles 21 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This bibliography fills a gap in the reference literature on nutrition in the Middle East by providing abstracts of all studies published from 1970 through 1986. It continues the work that was started by A Decade of Nutrition Research in the Arab World 1960-1970, published by the American University of Beirut. The geographic scope of the bibliography includes Algeria, Bahrain, egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emiratges, and North and South Yemen; it also includes studies from other countries, such as Afghanistan, that have substantial Arab or Islamic populations. Information is also supplied for works that examine the nutrition of Middle Eastern guest workers and their families in Europe, or which focus on Islamic migrants to that continent. Relevant intercountry studies, projects, and conferences are referenced as well. The population focus of this bibliography is on people who consume primarily the Middle Eastern diet. Although human nutrition is the main subject, this necessarily also involves works which treat animal nutrition, toxicology, agriculture, epidemiology, parasitology, food technology, medical therapy, and cultural practices. The bibliography is organized and cross-indexed by years of publication, country examined, first author's last name, and main and secondary topics for ease of use. English-language abstracts are provided for every article.

The Peacetime Army, 1900-1941 - A Research Guide (Hardcover, Annotated edition): Marvin Fletcher The Peacetime Army, 1900-1941 - A Research Guide (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
Marvin Fletcher
R1,382 Discovery Miles 13 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This, the first volume in the new Greenwood Press series Reseach Guides in Military Studies, focuses on the United States Army during one of the most significant periods of its development. Following a detailed overview of the tremendous change that occured during this 40-year span, Fletcher presents two major sections of annotated bibliography, covering 1900-1917 and 1919-1941, respectively. Over 900 works are cited, including books, articles, dissertations, and government documents. Most have been published within the last 20 years. As the first research guide published covering this critical period in U.S. Army history, The Peacetime Army will be of significant benefit to military historians and students of military affairs.

Church and Social Action - A Critical Assessment and Bibliographical Survey (Hardcover, Annotated edition): Dorita F. Bolger,... Church and Social Action - A Critical Assessment and Bibliographical Survey (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
Dorita F. Bolger, Roger T. Wolcott
R2,136 Discovery Miles 21 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The authors of the volume set themselves an almost impossible task. They have put together, with very well done short annotations, an impressive array of bibliographical information on the contibution of religion to social change. Choice This bibliographic survey focuses on one aspect of religion: situations in which organized religious groups have served as active agents in social change. These situations have been studied by sociologists, historians, anthropologists, and political scientists, and in this work Wolcott and Bolger discuss the literature and provide a guide to the main sources in English. The concentration is on religious-based social movements in modern societies since the industrial revolution, and in Third World countries from the beginning of their independence movements. In addition, there are sections on such topics as messianic movements, the religious radical-right, and sacral kingship. The volume is organized into two major sections, an introductory survey and an annotated bibliography. The introductory survey includes discussions of the comparative study of religious social action, the role that religious organizations play in modern societies, contemporary studies of other societies, and churches and social action throughout history. The annotated bibliography contains over 600 items covering all the major religions and is arranged in the same organizational scheme as the survey. Each entry is numbered consecutively, and references throughout the text refer to the item numbers. The book concludes with author, title, and subject indexes. This reference work will be an important source for courses in religious studies, history, and the social sciences, as well as a valuable addition to both academic and public libraries.

Dennis W. Hauck
R3,838 Discovery Miles 38 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

William Shatner is one of the most readily-recognized people in the world. While most people immediately think of him as Captain James T. Kirk of Star Trek, few realize that he began his professional acting career at the age of eight and has appeared in Shakespearean festivals, regularly-scheduled radio roles, university and regional playhouses, live television drama, and more than 50 motion pictures. This book provides a short biography and a detailed record of all his performances.

Shatner's acting credits range from intense drama to lighthearted comedy, and from biting social commentary to science fiction fantasy. He has written and directed plays, television, and feature films, and is the author of four best-selling novels. This essential reference guide covers every facet of his extraordinary career, including his personal appearances, stage plays, films, television and radio shows, recordings, and literary works. Entries for his work provide cast and credit listings, plot synopses, commentary, and excerpts from reviews. An annotated bibliography lists nearly 1000 references to his life and work.

The Greenwood Annual Abstract of Legal Dissertations and Theses, 1985-1987 (Hardcover): Kenneth Brown The Greenwood Annual Abstract of Legal Dissertations and Theses, 1985-1987 (Hardcover)
Kenneth Brown
R2,537 Discovery Miles 25 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Until now tracking dissertations and theses prepared at American law schools has been an elusive undertaking. Few schools provide accessible information and the standard guides to dissertations largely have ignored the subject area. Yet most researchers have long recognized the potential value of these documents in subject areas as diverse as constitutional law, economic and social regulation, comparative law and politics, taxation, and international affairs.

The objective of "The Greenwood Annual Abstract of Legal Dissertations and TheseS" is to provide convenient research access to these materials. In this, the first volume in the program, abstracts are provided for 176 dissertation and theses issued from 1985 through 1987. Future volumes will strengthen the coverage of the initial period while bringing the coverage forward. The volume is organized in three sections. The abstract section comprises the bulk of the work and is organized alphabetically by author last name. Each entry consists of full author name; full title and, with few exceptions, full subtitle; name of the institution granting the degree; year the thesis or dissertation was submitted or copyrighted; the degree level; inclusive pagination; whether the material has notes, appendixes, or bibliography; and a one-page or longer abstract. The second section is a title index and the third is a subject index. The latter has been designed to be of use not only to researchers in the law but also to those in the social sciences.

Clare Boothe Luce - A Research and Production Sourcebook (Hardcover, Annotated edition): Mark Fearnow Clare Boothe Luce - A Research and Production Sourcebook (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
Mark Fearnow
R2,117 Discovery Miles 21 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Among the most commercially successful female playwrights of all times, Clare Boothe Luce (1903-1987) is best remembered as the author of "The Women" (1936), a biting social comedy. Beginning in 1942, she spent less of her time writing plays and turned instead to the wider stage of politics and world affairs. She was the editor of Vanity Fair magazine, a congresswoman, and an ambassador to Italy during the Eisenhower administration.

This book traces her transition from playwright to politician to Catholic apologist. It uncovers for the first time plays, both early and late, that dramatize her spiritual and artistic journey. A comprehensive survey of her plays and the world's reception to them, the book provides a thorough treatment of Luce's published and unpublished work. For each play, the volume includes a plot summary, critical commentary, and production information. The book also includes an exhaustive and generously-annotated bibliography of both popular reviews and scholarly criticism.
