Fidel Toldra; Volume editing by Se-Kwon Kim
R3,925 Discovery Miles 39 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Marine Enzymes Biotechnology: Production and Industrial Applications, Part I, Production of Enzymes provides a huge treasure trove of information on marine organisms. Nowadays, marine organisms are good candidates for enzymes production and have been recognized as a rich source of biological molecules that are of potential interest to various industries. Marine enzymes such as amylases, carboxymethylcellulases, proteases, chitinases, keratinases, xylanases, agarases, lipases, peroxidase and tyrosinases are widely used in the industry for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, foods, beverages, and confectioneries, as well as in textile and leather processing, and in waste water treatment. The majority of the enzymes used in the industry are of microbial origin because microbial enzymes are relatively more stable than the corresponding enzymes derived from plants and animals.

Lipid Analysis - Isolation, Separation, Identification and Lipidomic Analysis (Paperback, 4th edition): W W Christie, X. Han Lipid Analysis - Isolation, Separation, Identification and Lipidomic Analysis (Paperback, 4th edition)
W W Christie, X. Han
R4,641 R4,307 Discovery Miles 43 070 Save R334 (7%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This well-known and highly successful book was first published in 1973 and has been completely re-written in subsequent editions (published in 1982 and 2003). This new Fourth Edition has become necessary because of the pace of developments in mass spectrometry of intact lipids, which has given recognition of lipid analysis and 'lipidomics' as a distinct science. To bring the book up to date with these developments, author William W. Christie is joined by co-author Xianlin Han. Although devoting considerable space to mass spectrometry and lipidomics, Lipid analysis remains a practical guide, in one volume, to the complexities of the analysis of lipids. As in past editions, it is designed to act as a primary source, of value at the laboratory bench rather than residing on a library shelf. Lipid analysis deals with the isolation, separation, identification and structural analysis of glycerolipids, including triacylglycerols, phospholipids, sphingolipids, and the various hydrolysis products of these. The chapters follow a logical sequence from the extraction of lipids to the isolation and characterization of particular lipid classes and of molecular species of each, and to the mass spectrometric analysis of lipids and lipidomics. The new influence of mass spectrometry is due mainly to the development of electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI). Most emphasis in this book is placed on ESI, which is enabling structural characterization of different lipid classes and the identification of novel lipids and their molecular species.

Advances in Biomembranes and Lipid Self-Assembly, Volume 23 (Hardcover): Ales Iglic, Chandrashekhar V. Kulkarni, Michael Rappolt Advances in Biomembranes and Lipid Self-Assembly, Volume 23 (Hardcover)
Ales Iglic, Chandrashekhar V. Kulkarni, Michael Rappolt
R4,866 Discovery Miles 48 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Elsevier book series Advances in Biomembranes and Lipid Self-Assembly (previously titled Advances in Planar Lipid Bilayers and Liposomes), provides a global platform for a broad community of experimental and theoretical researchers studying cell membranes, lipid model membranes, and lipid self-assemblies from the micro- to the nanoscale. Planar lipid bilayers are widely studied due to their ubiquity in nature and find their application in the formulation of biomimetic model membranes and in the design of artificial dispersion of liposomes. Moreover, lipids self-assemble into a wide range of other structures including micelles and the liquid crystalline hexagonal and cubic phases. Consensus has been reached that curved membrane phases do play an important role in nature as well, especially in dynamic processes such as vesicles fusion and cell communication. Self-assembled lipid structures have enormous potential as dynamic materials ranging from artificial lipid membranes to cell membranes, from biosensing to controlled drug delivery, from pharmaceutical formulations to novel food products to mention a few. An assortment of chapters in this volume represents both original research as well as comprehensive reviews written by world leading experts and young researchers.

Ecotoxicology Essentials - Environmental Contaminants and Their Biological Effects on Animals and Plants (Paperback): Donald W.... Ecotoxicology Essentials - Environmental Contaminants and Their Biological Effects on Animals and Plants (Paperback)
Donald W. Sparling
R1,590 Discovery Miles 15 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ecotoxicology Essentials: Environmental Contaminants and Their Biological Effects on Animals and Plants provides a fundamental understanding of this area for students and professionals in ecotoxicology, ecology, conservation, chemistry, public health, wildlife management, fisheries, and many other disciplines. Although new chemicals and potential problems are developed every year, a basic education is essential to address these new challenges, and this work gives such training. Written with the regulatory framework in mind, the material guides readers on modelling, how to conduct assessments, and human and wildlife risk, focusing on effects on animals rather than transport of chemicals. Simple discussions of chemistry are complemented by coverage on the behavior of the animal, dynamics of the ecosystem, real-life situations like drought, and predators in the system - i.e., the natural system versus the lab setting. The book's first section contains chapters on the principles of contaminant toxicology including a brief history of the science of ecotoxicology, basic principles of the science, testing methods, and ways of determining if animals have been exposed to either acute or chronic concentrations of contaminants. The second section deals with the primary classes of contaminants including their chemical characteristics, sources, uses, and effects on organisms. The third section focuses on more complex issues such as the regulation of pollution, population and community effects, risk assessment and modelling.

Quantum Mechanics, Cell-Cell Signaling, and Evolution (Paperback): John S. Torday Quantum Mechanics, Cell-Cell Signaling, and Evolution (Paperback)
John S. Torday
R3,225 Discovery Miles 32 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Quantum Mechanics, Cell-Cell Signaling, and Evolution offers a detailed accounting of the latest research and theorizing on the integration of quantum physics with biological action to produce a novel perspective on evolution. The book advocates for a paradigm shift towards understanding biology and medicine causally as predictive sciences, presenting quantum mechanics and physiology as vertically integrated. The author has taken a unique approach to the question of how and why evolution occurred. The account is based on extensive knowledge of lipid physical chemistry, and its role in the evolution of the lung under the influence of hormonal effects on structure and function. The title arranges lipid biochemistry and biophysics into an integrated explanation, guiding readers from the immersion of lipids in water as the origin of life, to lung surfactant in alveolar homeostasis, and leading to a new understanding of how consciousness interacts with the laws of nature. This volume argues for a novel understanding of evolutionary processes based on fundamental science and positions itself as seeking consilience among research disciplines. Starting from the origins of the cosmos, the author proceeds through nucleosynthesis and Endosymbiosis Theory, to finally describe consciousness in relation to natural law.

Introduction to Protein Mass Spectrometry (Hardcover): Pradip Kumar Ghosh Introduction to Protein Mass Spectrometry (Hardcover)
Pradip Kumar Ghosh
R2,427 Discovery Miles 24 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Introduction to Protein Mass Spectrometry provides a comprehensive overview of this increasingly important, yet complex, analytical technique. Unlike many other methods which automatically yield an absolutely unique protein name as output, protein mass spectrometry generally requires a deduction of protein identity from determination of peptide fragmentation products. This book enables readers to both understand, and appreciate, how determinations about protein identity from mass spectrometric data are made. Coverage begins with the technical basics, including preparations, instruments, and spectrometric analysis of peptides and proteins, before exploring applied use in biological applications, bioinformatics, database, and software resources. Citing the most recent and relevant work in the field of biological mass spectrometry, the book is written for researchers and scientists new to the field, but is also an ideal resource for those hoping to hone their analytical abilities.

The Chemistry of Soils (Hardcover, 3rd Revised edition): Garrison Sposito The Chemistry of Soils (Hardcover, 3rd Revised edition)
Garrison Sposito
R2,989 Discovery Miles 29 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The second edition of The Chemistry of Soils, published in 2008, has been used as a main text in soil-science courses across the world, and the book is widely cited as a reference for researchers in geoscience, agriculture, and ecology. The book introduces soil into its context within geoscience and chemistry, addresses the effects of global climate change on soil, and provides insight into the chemical behavior of pollutants in soils. Since 2008, the field of soil science has developed in three key ways that Sposito addresses in this third edition. For one, research related to the Critical Zone (the material extending downward from vegetation canopy to groundwater) has undergone widespread reorganization as it becomes better understood as a key resource to human life. Secondly, scientists have greatly increased their understanding of how organic matter in soil functions in chemical reactions. Finally, the study of microorganisms as they relate to soil science has significantly expanded. The new edition is still be comprised of twelve chapters, introducing students to the principal components of soil, discussing a wide range of chemical reactions, and surveying important human applications. The chapters also contain completely revised annotated reading lists and problem sets.
