Managing the Spino-Pelvic-Hip Complex is based on the author's extensive clinical experience of assessing and treating athletes at all levels. For nearly 20 years his work has been in the field of high-performance sport. That experience has informed his clinical reasoning and treatment philosophies which are also based upon lessons learnt from challenging the science through a Doctor of Philosophy degree. The book encompasses a complete management strategy for manual practitioners to use when dealing with ongoing issues pertaining to the spino-pelvic-hip complex. It presents a strategy which aims to simplify functional, biomechanical and bio-psychosocial analysis models that can be used as diagnostic tools to highlight kinetic chain and/or specific segmental restrictions in the spino-pelvic-hip complex. The author gives a rationale for the application of the treatment specific to the needs of the athlete, using the appropriate manual techniques to the lumbar spine, pelvis and hip joint. The treatments are also complemented by strategies for active lifestyle management, incorporating activation techniques and movement control exercises. Managing the Spino-Pelvic-Hip Complex complements the courses that the author has developed and delivers. It can be also used as a stand-alone educational tool and will be helpful for any therapist working within the sporting environment.
Advanced Osteopathic Technique is the third and most complete revision of the PPT system of manipulation originated and developed by John Bayliss. His work and theories are recognized around the world by Doctors, Osteopaths, Chiropractors and Physiotherapists at all levels. At the core of Osteopathy is the Osteopathic Lesion. John Bayliss has been able to establish exactly what an osteopathic lesion is and the forces that create them. This information is explained and illustrated in detail in this book. With this knowledge this book also shows how PPT's unwind a lesion rather than wrenching it apart (gapping). PPT's are: Painless and silent Genuinely easy to apply manipulations Leave little to no trauma behind No awkward uncomfortable positions Results are quick and long lasting PPT's are entirely new John Bayliss is an Osteopath with over 25 years of experience. In 2004, frustrated by the short comings in osteopathic theory and manipulation at that time, with his background in engineering, he sought new solutions. To do this he started looking at all aspects of how the pelvic and spinal joints articulate individually and then synchronously. He looked beyond traditional thinking and focused research, with function and logic as his guide. Synergetic bio-mechanics and PPT manipulation are the result of his research. This book is a professionally colour illustrated proven technical manual for the forward thinking practitioner who is looking to update their knowledge and learn genuine cutting edge techniques.
Osteopathy in the care of athletes is a rapidly developing area, as many realise it's what this health care system has to offer. In this research-based book, the author puts forward osteopathic approaches that are at the forefront of athletic care in both the UK and the USA. This book applies osteopathic practice and principles to athletic care both on and off the field. It is written for practitioners and students of osteopathy, medicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and those working in general practice. This book shows, for the first time, osteopathy as it was meant to be practiced.
This clinical textbook will update the reader on the relevant anatomy, known biomechanics, clinical assessment, musculoskeletal conditions and treatment of the thorax and how these relate to the function of the whole body. An integrated biopsychosocial model (the Integrated Systems Model - ISM) will be highlighted in this text and used as a foundation for clinicians to organize their knowledge from multiple sources. The text emphasizes the current suggestion from the evidence that treatment be individualized and that clinical reasoning form the basis for treatment decisions. Richly illustrated with 3D-rendered colour anatomical drawings, and over 250 clinical photographs, The Thorax: An integrated approach is the definitive manual on the thorax for all bodyworkers helping patients improve mobility and control of the trunk.
"Hello Chiropractic, Goodbye Colic" demonstrates how and why chiropractic care can eliminate colic in over 90% of infants and babies treated, usually within two weeks. Aimed at parents, the book details the causes, prevention and treatment of colic, tells how to select a chiropractor and what to expect, and explains why pediatricians don't know about chiropractic for colic. 140 pages.
This unique fully illustrated colour book is set to raise the bar in professional manipulation and how the spine and rib cage articulate synchronously and synergetically to compliment the wide range of movement's humans take for granted. Imagine a set of swift, precision, silent and efficient genuine manipulative techniques that when applied, the patient is unaware that they have just been manipulated and this includes the neck and sacroiliac joints. In practice, the safety factor during an all-inclusive manipulative treatment is raised to an unprecedented level. To be able to accomplish this, the old theories on spinal mechanics, discovered at the turn of the last century, had to be put to one side. This book introduces a new set of theories on spinal mechanics that can be demonstrated to work singularly, synchronously and synergetically, based on the extensive and pioneering research and experimentation of Osteopath J.R.Bayliss. From these theories it was possible to theorise how joints subluxate, and the book goes into much detail about how this happens. It was only from this new beginning that the new type of manipulation protocol was discovered. It is called 'Passive Prone Technique' because all the patient has to do during the procedure is adopt a relaxed, prone and passive position. The therapist can actually feel the joint and not just the soft tissue effortlessly sliding back into place under their fingers. Because PPT's have such a low trauma footprint on the body it is possible to manipulate both of the sacroiliac joints and every one of the lumbar, thoracic and neck joints in one treatment session. This offers the potential of getting the spine very straight, hence the nickname 'true alignment'. Not only this, Edition 2 of this book has been expanded to cover how the rib cage and shoulder girdle integrates with the spine during breathing, extension, flexion, rotation and side-bending. There are four extra chapters covering their physiology and how the individual joints subluxate together with, the types of subluxation patterns that develop and cause the commonly identifiable misshapenness of the human torso and restrictions to the breathing mechanism. Co-operative Supine Technique and Co-operative Prone Techniques are introduced and are illustrated to show how the rib cage and shoulder girdle can be effectively manipulated to take the mobility and the alignment of body's symmetry to a new level.
This unique contribution to chiropractic provides expert guidance from leaders in the field in one concise resource. Included are standards for chiropractic practice and education, quality assurance and quality control, research in practice, scope of chiropractic practice and mor e.
Today's chiropractors are practicing in a very difficult and competitive environment. They need to seriously plan and execute their practices the same way that successful business enterprises do. Many fail, not because they are poor clinicians, but simply because their practices are not founded on a personal vision and based on a realistic action plan. Strategic Planning for the Chiropractic Practice takes the reader from the development of a vision statement, through a mission statement, goals, objectives and operational plans and a specific execution plan.
The Low Back and Pelvis is the third volume in the series of technique manuals featuring chiropractic techniques of the late A.L. Logan, DC. To be used by students and practitioners, this book presents and effe ctive approaches to treatment of the low back and pelvis. Case histori es, examination and adjustive techniques, exercises, and numerous illu strations are included.
Provides an important contribution to the ongoing debate about the scope and approach of osteopathy (mechanistic vs psychological/spiritual). Looks at the dichotomy between the spirit and the science within osteopathy. Argues that the most effective care is given when a skilled practitioner combines technical skill with empathy, compassion and a still, listening attitude. Suggests that while hard research and clinical evidence provide important underpinning it is the human qualities of wisdom and compassion which can develop osteopathy into an art. Based on over 40 years' experience as a dedicated practitioner and a gifted teacher. At a time when the debate is more open and lively than ever this book is very timely.

Chiropractors, massage therapists, orthopedists, and general practitioners will find the images valuable in the communication process. Images show key bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and arteries: posterior hip; anterior hip and thigh; posterior knee; anterior knee; medial knee; lateral knee; medial ankle and foot; and lateral ankle and foot.
This book is for the current Cranial Osteopathic practitioner. It looks into Cranial Osteopathy from a more profound 'inner' approach to help the practitioner to understand Cranial Osteopathy from a deeper and broader perspective. The book starts by taking the reader on an 'inner' journey of understanding more about themselves as the practitioner, discussing the 'osteopathic toolbox', and the need to be 'inner centred' when diagnosing and treating. It then looks at aspects of diagnosis - of tissue and fluid states - giving the reader several 'inner' considerations which they should apply when assessing a patient. The book then looks at the whole body and using an 'inner' approach to assess and treat each area. Each chapter gives an overview of the relevant anatomy and discusses the osteopathic relevance and new ways of working. Case studies/clinical experiences are described and 'hands on' exercises, which can be accessed via audio files, are given for the reader to practise. These exercises should be done 'at the treatment table' and will prepare the reader to use the approaches described with their patients. The audio leads the listener through a 'guided tour' of the anatomy and explains the exercise while they use their hands to feel what the author is describing. This guide will help Cranial Osteopathic practitioners enhance their skills, knowledge and understanding to a much-advanced level.
The Fascial Distortion Model (FDM) was introduced by the American physician Stephen Typaldos (1957-2006). In this model all injuries and other conditions causing pain or disability are seen as arising from specific distortions of the connective tissue. This highly illustrated and very practical text and manual covers in detail the theoretical framework of the model, and approaches to manual therapy treatment based on an understanding of the FDM. The authors systematically cover all disorders likely to be encountered by the therapist, and provide comprehensive guidance about when it is appropriate to use FDM and how best to employ these approaches in treatment. The book is therefore of interest and value to all practitioners who want to understand the FDM and to incorporate its techniques into their therapeutic practice. This is also a comprehensive textbook and manual for anyone studying on FDM courses and for specific qualifications.
This handbook is an invaluable resource on the principles and practice of Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture (YNSA). This popular form of scalp acupuncture is used to treat a wealth of neurological conditions, and is very effective in stroke patients with pain and restricted mobility, providing relief from the symptoms. David Bomzon is an international expert on YNSA and he includes step-by-step explanations of points, points location, indications for needling, and clinical cases, all supported by line drawings and photographs. Uniquely, this book is written by an acupuncturist for acupuncturists, chiropractors and physical therapists, and the author clearly reconciles the theoretical needling points described by Yamamoto with actual needling points. Basic, sensory, brain, Y (epsilon) and cranial points are all covered, as well as instructions on applying YNSA in the clinic. The handbook also explains the benefits of combining YNSA treatment with Western medicine and physical therapy, making this essential reading for all practitioners looking to expand their knowledge of scalp acupuncture.
This is a brand new edition of a successful book which was one of the first to encourage movement therapists and bodyworkers to look at the postural causes of movement problems, rather than focusing treatment just on the physical symptoms. The book explains how to measure and assess posture and provides tools for doing so. The author introduces her unique perspective on body mechanics - Aston-Mechanics(R) - a departure from the standard model of body posture, and provides many opportunities to practice observation and analytical skills based on this paradigm. Key features The author is widely recognized as a pioneer in the art and science of kinetics for her discovery of the Aston(R) Paradigm and consequent development of the many forms of movement, bodywork, fitness and ergonomics of Aston(R) Kinetics. She created and developed Aston(R) Kinetics as an educational system of movement and bodywork. Rather than enforcing physical symmetry, Aston(R) Kinetics seeks to recognize the asymmetries that are natural to a person's body and to achieve the best movement possible. Her acute ability to 'see' the body in stillness and motion and to train others to see, move and exercise, established her discipline of bodywork and movement training that is known as Aston(R) Kinetics. The book is highly illustrated with over 300 photographs and 150 line drawings. All the illustrations are new for this edition.

This is a uniquely helpful and accessible guide to taking control of your own foot health by holistic heath innovator Yamuna Zake. We don't need doctors, orthotics or even surgery to relieve common foot problems, such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, neuromas, arthritis, hammertoes, and flat feet. By learning a correct gait that uses the entire foot to distribute weight, we can relieve and prevent common foot problems without any medical intervention. The book offers an easy-to-follow 4-week program of routines that take just 15 minutes a day during the program and allows readers to fix their feet and take ownership of their body. Each of the four weeks focuses on a different part of the foot: the heel, the arch, the ball and the toes. There are 3-4 exercises in each section and readers try them all and can choose to focus on those exercises in each section that they enjoy most. This programme is then supported with mindful foot practices to ensure bad habits don't return. Six common foot problems are also explored, including their causes (specific incorrect walking patterns) and ways of preventing and relieving them (exercises plus mindful practices). You won't find any medical concepts or terminology in this book, nor do you need to learn complicated foot anatomy. The whole program is based on what you already know: walking. You'll learn how to walk and stand correctly and to use every part of your feet as nature intended. That's all you need to do!

Born to Walk is designed to help movement therapists, physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, massage therapists, and bodyworkers understand gait and its mechanics, and will appeal to anyone with an interest in evolution and movement. It offers a concise model for understanding the complexity of movement while gaining a deeper insight into the physiology and mechanics of the walking process. This second and revised edition provides new research on assessment, diagnosis, and treatment approaches to enhance gait efficiency. Changes include: * Updated information and research on myofascial continuities * More clearly arranged according to planes of movement * New informative illustrations based on phases of gait with EMG readings * Clear listing of the 'Essential Events' The ability to walk upright on two legs is one of the major traits distinguishing us as humans, In Born to Walk, author James Earls explores the mystery of walking's evolution by describing the complex mechanisms enabling us to be efficient in bipedal gait. His model uses the latest research in paleoanthropology, sports medicine and anatomy, coupled with a functional understanding of the human form, to demonstrate how the whole body collaborates as an interconnected unit in walking, Earls explores the efficiency which is part of our natural design, distilling the complex actions into a simple sequence of "essential events" that engage the myofascia and utilize its full potential. Born to Walk helps identify areas of the body that, if dysfunctional, may reduce efficiency of gait. With this knowledge we can help ourselves and our clients regain a flowing elasticity within gait. |
