Rural Change and Planning - England and Wales in the Twentieth Century (Hardcover): Gordon Cherry, A.W. Rogers Rural Change and Planning - England and Wales in the Twentieth Century (Hardcover)
Gordon Cherry, A.W. Rogers
R1,683 Discovery Miles 16 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since the mid-1970s there has been an increase in interest and concern for the countryside. At a public level, this is evident in the growth in the membership of countryside organizations and rurally-focused hobbies. At the academic level, it can be seen in the burgeoning of courses with rural, conservation and environmental themes. At the level of public policy, it can be seen in the development of policies regarding conservation, farm diversification, public access and housing. Planners are often ignorant of the historical development of the agricultural economy - and conservation experts know little of the tradition of rural community development. This book addresses both of these issues, providing a critical overview of rural change over the 80 years since World War I in order to illuminate the historical origins of present-day policy. This work should be of interest to senior undergraduates and postgraduates specializing in rural development in western economies, rural planning, environmental studies, conservation or recreation; professional town and country planners; and staff in countryside organizations.

Community Visioning Programs - Processes and Outcomes (Paperback): Norman Walzer, Gisele Hamm Community Visioning Programs - Processes and Outcomes (Paperback)
Norman Walzer, Gisele Hamm
R1,457 Discovery Miles 14 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Communities have practiced strategic planning for decades using a variety of tools and programs based on the initial Take Charge programs of the early 1990s. These efforts generated a large amount of research regarding their effectiveness, as well as ways to measure long-term outcomes and other related issues, in efforts to better understand the process of community change. This book provides contributions written by researchers and practitioners describing both visioning and other strategic planning efforts. The Great Recession challenged the future of many small and medium sized cities, especially in non-metropolitan areas, renewing the interests of community leaders and elected officials in finding innovative ways to revitalize their local employment base and economic opportunities. Having access to a collection of best practices and successful approaches can greatly assist these practitioners in selecting strategies and techniques for use in their community efforts. The material in this book is especially useful because it includes both methodologies as well as case studies of how and why various approaches used in alternative cultural settings have succeeded. This book was originally published as a special issue of Community Development.

What Is Cosmopolitical Design? Design, Nature and the Built Environment (Paperback): Albena Yaneva, Alejandro Zaera-Polo What Is Cosmopolitical Design? Design, Nature and the Built Environment (Paperback)
Albena Yaneva, Alejandro Zaera-Polo
R1,475 Discovery Miles 14 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The scale of ecological crises made us realize that every kind of politics has always been cosmopolitics, politics of a cosmos. Cosmos embraces everything, including the multifarious natural and material entities that make humans act. The book examines cosmopolitics in its relation to design practice. Abandoning the modernist idea of nature as being external to the human experience - a nature that can be mastered by engineers and scientists from outside, the cosmpolitical thinking offers designers to embark in an active process of manipulating and reworking nature 'from within.' To engage in cosmopolitics, this book argues, means to redesign, create, instigate, and compose every single feature of our common experience. In the light of this new understanding of nature, we set the questions: What is the role of design if nature is no longer salient enough to provide a background for human activities? How can we foster designers' own force and make present what causes designers to think, feel, and act? How do designers make explicit the connection of humans to a variety of entities with different ontology: rivers, species, particles, materials and forces? How do they redefine political order by bringing together stars, prions and people? In effect, how should we understand design practice in its relation to the material and the living world? In this volume, anthropologists, science studies scholars, political scientists and sociologists rethink together the meaning of cosmopolitics for design. At the same time designers, architects and artists engage with the cosmopolitical question in trying to imagine the future of architectural and urban design. The book contains original empirical chapters and a number of revealing interviews with artists and designers whose practices set examples of 'cosmopolitically correct design'.

City of Quarters - Urban Villages in the Contemporary City (Hardcover): Mark Jayne City of Quarters - Urban Villages in the Contemporary City (Hardcover)
Mark Jayne; Edited by David Bell
R5,501 Discovery Miles 55 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In cities throughout the world, there is an increasingly ubiquitous presence of distinct social and spatial areas - urban villages, cultural and ethnic quarters. These spaces are sites where capital and culture intertwine in new ways. City of Quarters brings together some of the most prominent authors writing about urban villages to provide the first systematic and multi-disciplinary overview of this high-profile urban phenomenon. They address key questions such as 'What is the role of urban villages and quarters in the contemporary city?' and 'What are the economic, political, socio-spatial and cultural practices and processes that surround these urban spaces?' Blending conceptual chapters with theoretically directed case studies from all over the world, this book includes issues such as local and regional development strategies, production, consumption, the creative industries, popular culture, identity, lifestyle, and tourism.

Philanthropy and Light - Carnegie Libraries and the Advent of Transatlantic Standards for Public Space (Paperback): Oriel... Philanthropy and Light - Carnegie Libraries and the Advent of Transatlantic Standards for Public Space (Paperback)
Oriel Prizeman
R1,415 Discovery Miles 14 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Walter Gropius associated standardisation with promoting civilisation in 1935, yet Andrew Carnegie's influence on the proliferation of pattern book public library plans internationally predated these observations by 50 years. Through the first twenty years of his programme, he supported the erection of almost three thousand public buildings across Britain and America. Though better acknowledged in the US than the UK, this philanthropic contribution radically extended the scope of public provision and remains incomparable in its scale and scope in both nations. Frequently engraved with the self-deifying slogan Let there be Light , open access to navigate these new interior public spaces after work coincided with the first provision of electric light. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, professional groups had sought to specify minimum standards of natural light and air for schools and hospitals. However, the commercial quantification of electricity accelerated the development of a readily comparable vocabulary to prescribe adequate quantities of light for all tasks regardless of their location or orientation. Seeking to gauge the extent of universal values, this book concentrates on the design and performance of a handful of early Carnegie library buildings in Britain and America, identifying their response to contemporary design theory, but also by contrast to their respective local environmental contexts. It examines whether their standards of provision were equitable and if these privately financed public buildings were the first roots of generically standardised public environments to be shared transatlantically. The book also argues that the public library building type can provide a datum for acknowledging the twentieth century legacy of shared international environmental standards for public spaces more broadly.

Routledge Revivals: Planning and Urban Growth in Southern Europe (1984) (Hardcover): Martin Wynn Routledge Revivals: Planning and Urban Growth in Southern Europe (1984) (Hardcover)
Martin Wynn
R3,395 Discovery Miles 33 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1984, this book addresses key questions about the pattern of urban development in Southern Europe and the mechanisms employed to control and regulate this development in individual countries. It examines five countries - Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Turkey - that have experienced different scales and rates of urbanization and industrialization. It identifies common problems arising from these processes, as well as the successes and failures of the planning policies employed to regulate development. This book will be of great value to geographers interested in Southern Europe and urban and regional planners interested in comparative patterns of development.

Routledge Revivals: Housing in Europe (1984) (Hardcover): Martin Wynn Routledge Revivals: Housing in Europe (1984) (Hardcover)
Martin Wynn
R3,713 Discovery Miles 37 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1984, this book presents a survey of housing problems in various European countries and how individual states have responded. Each chapter begins by surveying the problem in each country since the Second World War, before going on to outline the roles fulfilled by national housing agencies and local authorities, as well as assessing the impact of housing policies on society and on the physical shape of cities. It considers whether housing policies have succeeded or failed and how the 'housing problem' has changed over time. Each chapter draws out lessons that can be learned for the future from each country's past handling of the problem. This book will be a useful reference for those interested in housing, including planners, geographers, economists, sociologists or policy-makers.

Community Impact Evaluation - Principles And Practice (Paperback): Nathaniel Lichfield Community Impact Evaluation - Principles And Practice (Paperback)
Nathaniel Lichfield
R1,970 Discovery Miles 19 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is a work summarizing in one volume the pioneering approach of the author to public-interest decision-taking in the field of urban & regional planning. This book is aimed at students, researchers and professionals in planning. Nathaniel Lichfield first introduced in his "Economics of Planned Development" the concept that, in any use and development of land, the traditional "development balance sheet" of the developers needed to be accompanied by a "planning balance sheet" prepared by the planning officer or planning authority. Over the forty years since this work was published, the author has brought to the operational level the "planning balance sheet," with many case studies, primarily for consultancy purposes. The present title reflects the incorporation during the 1970s of the then emerging field of environmental impact assessment.

City as Landscape - A Post Post-Modern View of Design and Planning (Paperback): Tom Turner City as Landscape - A Post Post-Modern View of Design and Planning (Paperback)
Tom Turner
R1,863 Discovery Miles 18 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In twenty essays, this book covers aspects of planning, architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, park and garden design. Their approach, described as post-postmodern, is a challenge to the 'anything goes' eclecticism of the merely postmodern.

Telecommunications and the City - Electronic Spaces, Urban Places (Paperback): Steve Graham, Simon Marvin Telecommunications and the City - Electronic Spaces, Urban Places (Paperback)
Steve Graham, Simon Marvin
R1,891 Discovery Miles 18 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Telecommunications and the City provides the first critical and state-of-the-art review of the relations between telecommunications and all aspects of city development and management.
Drawing on a range of theoretical approaches and a wide body of recent research, the book addresses key academic and policy debates about technological change and the future of cities with a fresh perspective. Through this approach, the complex and crucial transformations underway in cities in which telecommunications have central importance are mapped out and illustrated. Key areas where telecommunications impinge on the economic, social, physical, enviromental and institutional development of cities are illustrated by using boxed extracts and wide range of case study examples from Europe, Japan and North America.
Rejecting the extremes of optimism and pessimism in current hype about cities and telecommunications, Telecommunications and the City offers a sophisticated new perspective through which city-telecommunications relations can be understood.

Architecture of Resistance - Cultivating Moments of Possibility within the Palestinian/Israeli Conflict (Paperback, New... Architecture of Resistance - Cultivating Moments of Possibility within the Palestinian/Israeli Conflict (Paperback, New edition)
Yara Sharif
R1,608 Discovery Miles 16 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Architecture of Resistance investigates the relationship between architecture, politics and power, and how these factors interplay in light of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. It takes Palestine as the key ground of spatial exploration, looking at the spaces between people, boundary lines, documents and maps in a search for the meaning of architecture of resistance. Stemming from the need for an alternative discourse that can nourish the Palestinian spaces of imagination, the author reinterprets the land from a new perspective, by stripping it of the dominant power of lines to expose the hidden dynamic topography born out of everyday Palestine. It applies a hybrid approach of research through design and visual documentary, through text, illustrations, mapping techniques and collages, to capture the absent local narrative as an essential component of spatial investigation.

Routledge Revivals: Planning Games (1985) - Case Study Simulations in Land Management and Development (Hardcover): Martin Wynn Routledge Revivals: Planning Games (1985) - Case Study Simulations in Land Management and Development (Hardcover)
Martin Wynn
R3,400 Discovery Miles 34 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1985, this book presents seven games for use in the teaching and study of planning, urban studies or land administration. These simulations are all built on researched case studies and deal with a number of critical planning and developmental issues; for each one the book provides full operational instructions and all gaming materials required. The games in this volume cover a number of scenarios, including the design of a mixed retail, social and service centre in a new city, new development in a run-down inner city area, rehabilitation or renewal of housing, tourist development in the Mediterranean and a new cross-town motorway in a major north American city. In addition, sets of guidelines for those wishing to design and operate their own case study simulations are also included. This book will be a valuable resource for students of town planning or urban development who are keen to gain 'hands-on' experience of using the professional skills they have acquired on their courses.

Mental Health and The Built Environment - More Than Bricks And Mortar? (Paperback): David Halpern Mental Health and The Built Environment - More Than Bricks And Mortar? (Paperback)
David Halpern
R1,294 Discovery Miles 12 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This text explores the relationship between the planned or built environment and the occurrence of mental ill-health. It begins by providing a broad overview of what is known about the causes of psychopathic behaviour. It then goes on to discuss the issues that arise when attempting to identify: the impact of the environment as a source of stress; the effects that the environment can have on the quality of relationships between people; and the relationship between symbolic aspects of the environment, the planning process and mental health. The book uses analysis and case studies drawn from the UK and US and contains example illustrations of the built environment.

Creative Milieux - How Urban Design Nurtures Creative Clusters (Paperback): Quentin Stevens Creative Milieux - How Urban Design Nurtures Creative Clusters (Paperback)
Quentin Stevens
R1,520 Discovery Miles 15 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The so-called 'creative industries' are increasingly being presented as an important tool of urban regeneration and economic development. Until now, research on the clustering of such activities has been limited to economics, geography and urban policy. This book is the first to gather together emerging research in urban design and spatial planning that explores what characteristics of the built form of cities support the distinctive activity patterns of various creative industries, and how and why they cluster together at a range of local scales. The book offers detailed case studies and comparative analyses of creative city neighbourhoods on five continents. Contributions examine urban forms, building types, and other qualities of place that attract and retain creative workers and foster creative production, outlining a range of methodologies for studying them. Taken altogether, Creative Milieux offers new insights for urban design practice, and for its role in wider urban policy. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Urban Design.

Bruno Taut's Design Inspiration for the Glashaus (Paperback): David Nielsen Bruno Taut's Design Inspiration for the Glashaus (Paperback)
David Nielsen
R1,523 Discovery Miles 15 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As a formative exemplar of early architectural modernism, Bruno Taut's seminal exhibition pavilion the Glashaus (literally translated Glasshouse) is logically part of the important debate of rethinking the origins of modernism. However, the historical record of Bruno Taut's Glashaus has been primarily established by one art historian and critic. As a result the historical record of the Glashaus is significantly skewed toward a singlular notion of Expressionism and surprisingly excludes Taut's diverse motives for the design of the building. In an effort to clarify the problematic historical record of the Glashaus, this book exposes Bruno Taut's motives and inspirations for its design. The result is that Taut's motives can be found in yet unacknowledged precedents like the botanical inspiration of the Victoria regia lily; the commercial interests of Frederick Keppler as the Director of the Deutche Luxfer Prismen Syndikat; and imitation that derived openly from the Gothic. The outcome is a substantial contribution to the re-evaluation of the generally accepted histories of the modern movement in architecture.

Twyford Down - Roads, campaigning and environmental law (Paperback): Barbara Bryant Twyford Down - Roads, campaigning and environmental law (Paperback)
Barbara Bryant
R1,757 Discovery Miles 17 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is the extraordinary saga of the eight year campaign to prevent the destruction of Twyford Down, then the undistributed landscape backcloth to the ancient City of Winchester. The story is told by Barbara Bryant who was at the forefront of the campaign from its modest beginnings in 1985 to its infamous culmination seven years later. Twyford Down is a compelling record of every step of the campaign. It examines the UK government's role in the destruction of the Down, firstly by proposing to complete the 'missing' link in the M3 via the cutting in Twyford Down and subsequently by its intransigence in rejecting alternative solutions. It also looks at the part the campaign has subsequently played in the evolution of environmental campaigning. European legislation, which failed to protect this precious piece of English countryside, is examined, as is the political background to the campaign. The campaign for Twyford Down was lost with the construction of the final section of the M3 motorway through Twyford Down. The campaign, and the issues it raised, are not likely to be forgotten - the gaping wound in the landscape will remain as a monument to the great car economy of the second half of the 20th century.

F. Ennis, Frank Ennis, P Healey, Prof Patsy Healey, M. Purdue
R4,155 Discovery Miles 41 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This text draws on research undertaken for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation on Development Impacts and Development Obligations to provide an account of the developing role of agreements in dealing with the impact of development. The first part reviews the policy, legal, planning and development context. The second part reviews contemporary practice. The third part reviews future developments. The authors bring their experience of both planning theory, practice and law and their empirical work to this major statement on an important area of planning practice. The focus is primarily on England, but the British experience is set in the wider context of experience elsewhere.

Urlan A. Wannop
R1,893 Discovery Miles 18 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Based on cases and interviews in Britain, Europe and the United States, this book explains the recurrence of regional planning and of initiatives in regional governance, in a wide range of advanced industrial countries. Providing an analysis of the nature of regional planning and governance, the book traces the development of regional planning and the institutions associated with it. It also looks at the way that regions have been changing their form under pressure from economic and political developments and examines how regional planning and governance has responded, comparing experience in the UK, the rest of Europe and the US.
In concluding that regionalism is an imperative feature of politics in most countries, associated with almost any of the variety of forms of governance, the author offers a major appraisal of the significance of regional planning in an intemational context

Constructing a Sense of Place - Architecture and the Zionist Discourse (Paperback): Haim Yacobi Constructing a Sense of Place - Architecture and the Zionist Discourse (Paperback)
Haim Yacobi
R1,711 Discovery Miles 17 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

While it is widely recognized that architects and their architecture play a key role in constructing a sense of place, the inherent nexus between an architectural ideology and the production of national space and place has so far been neglected. Focusing on the Zionist ideology, this book brings together practising architects and academics to critically examine the role of architects, architecture and spatial practices as mediators between national ideology and the politicization of space. The book first of all sets out the wider context of theoretical debates concerning the role of architecture in the process of constructing a sense of place then divides into six main sections. The book not only provides an innovative new perspective on how the Israeli state had developed, but also sheds light on how architecture shapes national identity in any post-colonial and settler state.

Designing Sustainable Cities in the Developing World (Paperback): Roger Zetter Designing Sustainable Cities in the Developing World (Paperback)
Roger Zetter; Georgia Butina-Watson
R1,711 Discovery Miles 17 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Can conservation of the built heritage be reconciled with the speed of urban change in cities of the developing world? What are the tools of sustainable design and how can communities participate in the design of the environments in which they live and work? These are some of the questions explored within this innovative and richly illustrated book. A wealth of examples drawn from Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India and Myanmar demonstrate how rapid physical and social change has swept away historic urban quarters and the cultural heritage they represent. Written in an accessible style the rich mix of concepts, research methods, analysis and practice-based tools is designed for academics and professionals alike. Leading academics Zetter and Watson have produced a fascinating book that is amongst the first to explore the concept of urban sustainability within the context of urban design in the developing world.

Planning London (Paperback): James Simmie Planning London (Paperback)
James Simmie
R1,704 Discovery Miles 17 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As a textbook for students in planning, geography and urban studies, this work provides both an introduction to the problems and practices of planning in general and an illustration of them using the London region in particular. The authors look at the decrepit public transport, congestion, noise, dirt, crime, poverty, begging, homelessness and addresses these issues in terms of history, jobs, housing, transport and the quality of the environment. Future options are considered. The book is divided into four major parts. Part One provides an introduction. Part Two addresses some major problems confronting anyone seeking to plan for London: unemployment, housing and transport. These issues are dealt with both individually and in terms of their inter-relationships, with emphasis placed on the need to relate employment and housing to each other in terms of both their individual land-use requirements and the transportation and communication links between them. Part Three deals with the past and present politics and practices of planning London. Part Four looks at both the future, focusing on the special characteristics of London as a world city, and the recent past in terms of changes i

Reinventing an Urban Vernacular - Developing Sustainable Housing Prototypes for Cities Based on Traditional Strategies... Reinventing an Urban Vernacular - Developing Sustainable Housing Prototypes for Cities Based on Traditional Strategies (Paperback)
Terry Moor
R1,895 Discovery Miles 18 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With increasing population and its associated demand on our limited resources, we need to rethink our current strategies for construction of multifamily buildings in urban areas. Reinventing an Urban Vernacular addresses these new demands for smaller and more efficient housing units adapted to local climate. In order to find solutions and to promote better urban communities with an overall environmentally responsible lifestyle, this book examines a wide variety of vernacular building precedents, as they relate to the unique characteristics and demands of six distinctly different regions of the United States. Terry Moor addresses the unique landscape, climate, physical, and social development by analyzing vernacular precedents, and proposing new suggestions for modern needs and expectations. Written for students and architects, planners, and urban designers, Reinventing an Urban Vernacular marries the urban vernacular with ongoing sustainability efforts to produce a unique solution to the housing needs of the changing urban environment.

Mixed Towns, Trapped Communities - Historical Narratives, Spatial Dynamics, Gender Relations and Cultural Encounters in... Mixed Towns, Trapped Communities - Historical Narratives, Spatial Dynamics, Gender Relations and Cultural Encounters in Palestinian-Israeli Towns (Paperback)
Dan Rabinowitz; Daniel Monterescu
R1,592 Discovery Miles 15 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Modern urban spaces are, by definition, mixed socio-spatial configurations. In many ways, their enduring success and vitality lie in the richness of their ethnic texture and ongoing exchange of economic goods, cultural practices, political ideas and social movements. This mixture, however, is rarely harmonious and has often led to violent conflict over land and identity. Focusing on mixed towns in Israel/Palestine, this insightful volume theorizes the relationship between modernity and nationalism and the social dynamics which engender and characterize the growth of urban spaces and the emergence therein of inter-communal relations. For more than a century, Arabs and Jews have been interacting in the workplaces, residential areas, commercial enterprises, cultural arenas and political theatres of mixed towns. Defying prevailing Manichean oppositions, these towns both exemplify and resist the forces of nationalist segregation. In this interdisciplinary volume, a new generation of Israeli and Palestinian scholars come together to explore ways in which these towns have been perceived as utopian or dystopian and whether they are best conceptualized as divided, dual or colonial. Identifying ethnically mixed towns as a historically specific analytic category, this volume calls for further research, comparison and debate.

Women and Planning - Creating Gendered Realities (Hardcover): Clara H. Greed Women and Planning - Creating Gendered Realities (Hardcover)
Clara H. Greed
R5,638 Discovery Miles 56 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Planning is currently a male-dominated profession, but an analysis of a century of town planning reveals this to be a new development; women have been central to the planning movement since it began. "Women and Planning" is a comprehensive history and analysis of women and the planning movement, covering the philosophical, practical and policy dimensions of "planning for women". Beyond the marginalization of women, modern, scientific planning hides a story of past links with eugenics, colonialism, artistic, utopian and religious movements and the occult. Central to the discussion is how male planners have created planning in their own image, projecting patriarchal assumptions in their creation of "urban realities". Issues of class, sexuality, ethnicity and disability are raised by the fundamental question of "Who is being planned for?". Clara H. Greed has also written "Introducing Town Planning" and "Surveying Sisters".
