This is the first history of the bicycle to trace not only the
technical background to its invention, but also to contrast its
social and cultural impact in different parts of the world, and
assess its future as a continuing global phenomenon.
The last quarter of a century has seen major developments in the
world of cycling. Heart-rate monitors, GPS and smartphone apps are
all used by riders of all abilities up and down the country as part
of their training programme, but it is the power meter that really
stands out as the ultimate tool for any cyclist who wishes to train
to their full potential. Power has become the common currency of
training discussions amongst the growing number of cyclists who
have splashed out on a power meter. But does the average cyclist
fully understand the figures displayed on their bike computer
screens and, even if they do, can they use that information in the
most effective way? Professor Louis Passfield was the first
scientist in the UK to work and study with power meters. In this
book Professor Passfield shares some of his vast experience and
shows that you don't have to be a pro cyclist, triathlete, or coach
to reap the benefits of training with a power meter.

I had a constant battle to get where I am today. Scrimping and
scraping, people telling me not to do it, I couldn't do it. That my
life wouldn't amount to very much. Now I might have had a bit of
natural talent but I got here because of pure determination and
persistence. Stubbornness you might say. I always went that extra
mile, pushed myself that bit harder than anyone else and never took
anything for granted. It was 1954 when Beryl Charnock met keen
cyclist Charlie Burton. In those days they cycled in clubs and once
Beryl started she was smitten, not only with Charlie, but by the
thrill and freedom found on two wheels. Beryl was better than good,
she was the best, and she was determined to stay that way. Beryl
Burton was five times world-pursuit champion, thirteen times
national champion, twice road-racing world champion and twelve
times national champion. Her accolades include time trials, former
world-record holder, former British record-holder, numerous sports
awards an MBE and an OBE. Burton was one of the most astonishing
sports people ever to have lived, but she remains something of a
mystery. Beryl, which celebrates the extraordinary sporting
achievements of this inspirational cyclist, has been specially
commissioned as an adaptation from Maxine Peake's acclaimed 2012
Radio 4 play and marks her stage-writing debut. It received its
world premiere on 30 June 2014 at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in
the Courtyard Theatre.
From the day he joined a ramshackle Kenyan cycling club made up of orphans and street children, Chris Froome was destined for greatness. Froome: The Ride Of His Life chronicles Froome's journey from the dusty mountain tracks outside Nairobi to the historic
roads of the world's most famous bicycle race and his victory in the 2013 Tour de France.
It's a journey that begins by learning to fix punctures in a Kenyan village under the mentorship of his longtime friend David Kinjah. It's the story of a boy who once sold
avocados on the side of the road and lived with his mother in the servants' quarters at the back of a lavish homestead in Nairobi, but who had a free spirit and a drive to follow his dream.
From his challenges and triumphs on the road to the tragedy of his mother's
death, Froome emerges as a man apart but loyal and compassionate to those nearest to him as he sought to capture road cycling's ultimate prize - the Tour de France. From Africa to the Alps, this is the story of Africa's greatest cycling moment. This is the ride of Chris Froome's life.
Freedom rider is an adventure in extreme endurance sport, as well
as an inquiry into the unique story of our fascinating country.
When journalist Kevin Davie started riding his mountain bike in
remote, wide-open South African spaces he found himself on a 10 000
km journey that tested his courage and determination through
blizzards, lightning and hail storms as well as forty degree heat,
forging new trails through rocky and mountainous terrain. On his
journey, Kevin completed the Freedom Challenge, the Spine (the
Drakensberg from end to end), the Ride to Rhodes and the Ganna
(Beitbridge to Cape Town). This is riding minimalism, the rider
carrying all his requirements without any back-up vehicle. Two of
the longest rides, 5 000 kms in all, are ridden solo. This is his
story - why athletes push themselves to rise to the challenge of
extreme sport - as well as an account of the country and the
incredible warmth and support from locals who reach out to help in
so many ways.
On 22 July 2012 Bradley Wiggins made history as the first British
cyclist to win the Tour de France. Ten days later at the London
Olympic Games he won the time trial to become his country's most
decorated Olympian. In an instant 'Wiggo', the kid from Kilburn,
was a national hero. Two years previously, however, Wiggins had
been staring into the abyss. His much-hyped attempt to conquer the
2010 Tour de France had ended in public humiliation. Poor results
and indifferent form left him facing the sack from Team Sky. And
then he was hit with the tragic news of the death of his granddad,
George, the man who had raised him as a young boy. At rock bottom,
Wiggins had to reach deep inside himself and find the strength to
fight his way back. Outspoken, honest, intelligent and fearless,
Wiggins has been hailed as the people's champion. In My Time he
tells the story of the remarkable journey that led him from his
lowest ebb to win the world's toughest race. In his own words he
reveals the personal anguish that has driven him on and what it's
like behind the scenes at Team Sky: the brutal training regimes,
the sacrifices and his views on his teammates and rivals. He talks
too about his anger at the spectre of doping that pursues his
sport, how he dealt with the rush of taking Olympic gold and above
all what it takes to be the greatest.
