Flow Cytometry in Microbiology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993): David Lloyd Flow Cytometry in Microbiology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993)
David Lloyd
R2,847 Discovery Miles 28 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As yet, flow cytometry is not used so widely in microbiology as in some other disciplines. This volume presents contributions flow cytometry to study a from research microbiologists who use diverse set of problems. It illustrates the power of the technique, and may persuade others of its usefulness. Most of the con tributors gathered in Cardiff on 23 October 1991, at a meeting organized for the Royal Microscopical Society by Dr. Richard Allman, but the content of their chapters is not limited by the discourse of that meeting, and for balance other experts were invited to write for this book. Flow Cytometry in Microbiology thus represents the first collection of articles specifically devoted to the applications of a technique which promises so much to those investigating the microbial world. Therefore, the audience for this book includes such diverse groups as scientists, governmental policy-makers and regulatory bodies, representatives of industry and the public at large.

Anthropogenic Compounds (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1991): Franzkarl Brochhagen, Elizabeth P.... Anthropogenic Compounds (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1991)
Franzkarl Brochhagen, Elizabeth P. Burrows, Heidelore Fiedler, J. Konietzko, Wayne R. Mitchell, …
R1,510 Discovery Miles 15 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Environmental Chemistry is a relatively young science. Interest in this subject, however, is growing very rapidly and, although no agreement has been reached as yet about the exact content and limits of this interdisciplinary subject, there appears to be increasing interest in seeing environmental topics which are based on chemistry embodied in this subject. One of the first objectives of Environ mental Chemistry must be the study of the environment and of natural chemical processes which occur in the environment. A major purpose of this series on Environmental Chemistry, therefore, is to present a reasonably uniform view of various aspects of the chemistry of the environment and chemical reactions occurring in the environment. The industrial activities of man have given a new dimension to Environ mental Chemistry. We have now synthesized and described over five million chemical compounds and chemical industry produces about one hundred and fifty million tons of synthetic chemicals annually. We ship billions of tons of oil per year and through mining operations and other geophysical modifications, large quantities of inorganic and organic materials are released from their natural deposits. Cities and metropolitan areas of up to 15 million inhabitants produce large quantities of waste in relatively small and confined areas. Much of the chemical products and waste products of modern society are released into the environment either during production, storage, transport, use or ultimate disposal. These released materials participate in natural cycles and reactions and frequently lead to interference and disturbance of natural systems."

The environmental laws/regulations/trends in the U.S., Europe and Japan are discussed, along with their relevance to organosilicon materials. The book concludes with a broad overview of the major markets and global silicone producers, reviewing the industry's stewardship initiatives, relevant HES (health, environmental and safety) organizations and global cooperation.

Socioeconomic Evaluation of Drug Therapy (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1988): Wilhelm van Eimeren,... Socioeconomic Evaluation of Drug Therapy (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1988)
Wilhelm van Eimeren, Bruno Horisberger
R1,523 Discovery Miles 15 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Modern drugs are invented according to medical needs, making use of the latest innovations in technology. They are sophisticated, efficacious, and costly, but are they effective? Are they superior to existing - and cheaper - alternatives, and is this superiority reflected in increased cost-effectiveness? Are they socially more beneficial? These questions, and those related to the intriguing search for better quality of life, are addressed in this book by experts from the fields of medicine, epidemiology, economics, sociology and the pharmaceutical industry. The book describes the environmental situation in the United States and Europe in which pharmaceutical development takes place; it also explores the grounds for agreement as well as disagreement between the social and the economic evaluations of progress. It tackles the problem of outcome measurements, patients' behavior, quality of life, and individual value judgments and describes methodological boundaries in the socioeconomic evaluation of drugs.

Advanced Bioactive Compounds Countering the Effects of Radiological, Chemical and Biological Agents - Strategies to Counter... Advanced Bioactive Compounds Countering the Effects of Radiological, Chemical and Biological Agents - Strategies to Counter Biological Damage (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Grant N. Pierce, Volodymyr I. Mizin, Alexander Omelchenko
R6,410 Discovery Miles 64 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The probability for exposure to damaging radiation, toxic chemicals in the environment and adverse biological agents has increased exponentially today. The more frequent and faster travel that we experience today also escalates the risk of contraction and transmission of potentially deadly infections. This has created a very real and escalating risk for injuries and deaths. This is accentuated in the military and medical staff that is more frequently exposed to radiological, chemical, and biological agents in their normal working environment. Understanding the mechanisms whereby these toxic agents inflict damage to our bodies is essential to prepare us for these challenges. Much of the damage is inflicted through the generation of free radicals and non-radical oxidants which then act through oxidative mechanisms to injury the body. This volume will discuss the damage caused by these radiological, chemical, and biological environmental stressors, the mechanisms through which the damage can occur and the novel strategies that can be used to reduce the injury inflicted by these toxic compounds. Using basic and clinical research approaches, the contents of this book discuss new ideas for the development of bioactive products and environmental approaches to lessen or negate the biological damage inflicted by these noxious compounds.

The Filaria (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002): Thomas R. Klei, T.V. Rajan The Filaria (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002)
Thomas R. Klei, T.V. Rajan
R2,843 Discovery Miles 28 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Filarial nematodes constitute and important group of human pathogens in tropical regions of the world. Diseases associated with these worms are generally separated into two categories: filariasis, caused by infections of lymphatic dwelling parasites and onchocerciasis, or river blindness, caused by infections of Onchocerca volvulus. Other filariae specifically infect humans and it is likely that zoonotic filarial infections may alter the outcome of infections with human parasites. The chapters in this book will cover concepts that, in most instances, overlap all of these parasites as well as focus on new and emerging ideas. The Filaria, volume five of World Class Parasites, is written for researchers, students and scholars who enjoy reading research that has a major impact on human health, or agricultural productivity, and against which we have no satisfactory defense. It is intended to supplement more formal texts that cover taxonomy, life cycles, morphology, vector distribution, symptoms and treatment. It integrates vector, pathogen and host biology and celebrates the diversity of approach that comprises modern parasitological research.

Encyclopedia of Stress (Hardcover, 2nd edition): George Fink Encyclopedia of Stress (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
George Fink
R41,660 Discovery Miles 416 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Like the first edition, the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Stress covers nearly every conceivable aspect and ramification of stress including a wide range of related topics such as neuroimmune interactions, cytokines, enzymatic disorders, effects on the cardiovascular system, immunity and inflammation, and physical illnesses. Over the last decade, scientists have presented convincing research showing that psychological stress increases vulnerability to disease. They now understand more clearly that stress may be the thread tying together illnesses that were previously believed to be unrelated. Bone loss, increased abdominal fat, and damaged memory cells in the hippocampus have been linked to elevated cortisol levels.
Building on the success of the first edition, this completely revised work surveys the vast amount of research generated in the past five years, resulting in a substantial revision with over 30% new material and over 100 new entries. Expanded sections include Animal Studies, Anxiety and Depression, Drugs, Depression, Disasters, and Psychological and Other Therapies.
Also available online via ScienceDirect (2007) - featuring extensive browsing, searching, and internal cross-referencing between articles in the work, plus dynamic linking to journal articles and abstract databases, making navigation flexible and easy. Noise Control Manual - Guidelines for Problem-Solving in the Industrial / Commercial Acoustical Environment (Paperback,... Noise Control Manual - Guidelines for Problem-Solving in the Industrial / Commercial Acoustical Environment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1991)
David A Harris
R2,874 Discovery Miles 28 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Excessive noise levels are generally acknowledged to have adverse effects on our environment. Studies indicate that excessive noise levels can cause fatigue in exposed individuals, lower efficiency and productivity, impaired speech communication, and hearing loss. Excessive noise is almost everywhere today - in the office, in schools, hospitals and other institutional facilities, in all classes of public buildings, and in our factories. INDUSTRIAL NOISE High noise levels in factories can make speech communication in the plant difficult and at times impossible. Foremen are often unable to hear warning shouts from co-workers. The problem of hearing loss due to excessive noise exposure is of particular concern to industry, and to the federal government. In the early 1970s, the United States Congress passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) which sets criteria for health hazards and established limits for noise exposure of industrial workers. The OSHA Noise Standard was amended in 1982 to require audiometric testing of all employees exposed to noise levels of 85 dB or above for eight hours. A NOISE IN COMMERCIAL AND INSTITUTIONAL BUILDINGS While noise levels in offices, stores, schools, and other commercial and institutional buildings seldom reach those encountered in many industrial environments, they often reach levels which are distracting to the occupants of such buildings. Impairment of speech communica tion among workers, or inversely the lack of speech privacy, are both deterrents to effiCiency and productivity and are detrimental to the occupants' comfort and sense of well-being."

Homeostasis - Tumor - Metastasis (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Gaspar Banfalvi Homeostasis - Tumor - Metastasis (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Gaspar Banfalvi
R5,468 Discovery Miles 54 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Homeostasis. The health of an organism is influenced by external and internal changes that may lead to the loss of homeostasis. Under healthy conditions organisms compensate these changes. If compensation fails disease ensues. Attention will be paid to lifestyle, environmental changes, genetic makeup and health system. It willbe answered how lifestyle, environment, genetic makeup and social conditions help to maintain or upset the biological balance and lead to cancer.
Tumor formation. To understand this process the transfer of intracellular and the pathways of extracellular information (signal transduction) will be reviewed briefly. Loss of cellular balance may lead to cell death (.e.g. apoptosis) or to rapid cell growth of cells leading to tumor formation.
Metastasis. Animal tumor models serve to understand the spread of the primary tumor cells to distant locations of the organism. Different types of tumors and metastases will be reviewed. "

Structure-Function Relationships of Human Pathogenic Viruses (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002):... Structure-Function Relationships of Human Pathogenic Viruses (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002)
Andreas Holzenburg, Elke Bogner
R5,652 Discovery Miles 56 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Structure-Function Relationships of Human Pathogenic Viruses provides information on the mechanisms by which viruses enter the cell, replicate, package their DNA into capsids and mature into new virions. The relation between structural features and the pathogenicity and oncogenicity of some of the most relevant human viral pathogens are demonstrated and the acquisition of defense mechanisms through virus-host interactions are presented. In contrast to textbooks, this volume combines timely research data to provide a holistic view of viral pathogenesis. Furthermore Structure-Function Relationships of Human Pathogenic Viruses illustrates in a single volume the fundamental processes involved in viral life cycles using up-to-date information from research laboratories around the world. Knowledge of these processes is crucial to develop rationales for the design of future drugs. The timeliness of the data and the comprehensive yet concise approach this book takes in order to present the world of viral pathogens should make it a frontrunner in higher education and R&D.

Treatment of Human Parasitosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Heinz Mehlhorn, Zhongdao Wu, Bin Ye Treatment of Human Parasitosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Heinz Mehlhorn, Zhongdao Wu, Bin Ye
R5,353 Discovery Miles 53 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book intensively examines the efficacy of plant-derived products that have been used for over a thousand years by practitioners of so-called Traditional Chinese Medicine in the light of recent chemotherapeuticals. The chapters were written by renowned Chinese medical researchers and are supplemented by results obtained in German antiparasitic research projects. Parasites and emerging diseases are a major threat of our time, which is characterized by an enormous increase in the size of the human population and by an unbelievably rapid globalization that has led to the daily transport of millions of humans and containers with goods from one end of the earth to the other. Furthermore the slow but constant global warming offers new opportunities for many agents of diseases to become established in new areas. Therefore it is essential that we develop precautions in order to avoid epidemics or even pandemics in overcrowded megacities or at the large-scale farm animal confinements that are needed to secure a steady flow of food in the crowded regions of the world. Of course intensive research in the field of chemotherapy since 1900 has produced unbelievable breakthroughs in therapies for formerly untreatable and thus deadly diseases. However, a large number of untreatable diseases remain, as well as a constantly growing number of agents of disease that have developed resistances to standard chemical compounds. As such, it is not only worthwhile but also vital to consider the enormous amounts of information that have been obtained by human "high cultures" in the past. Examples from the past (like quinine) or present (like artemisinin, a modern antimalarial drug) show that plant extracts may hold tremendous potential in the fight against parasites and/or against vector-transmitted agents of diseases.

Aquatic Dermatology (Paperback, 2002 ed.): G. Angelini, D. Bonamonte Aquatic Dermatology (Paperback, 2002 ed.)
G. Angelini, D. Bonamonte
R1,491 Discovery Miles 14 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Skin diseases caused by aquatic organisms are continually on the increase owing to the great number of people who now converge on the hydrosphere for holidays, sports and professional activities. Aquatic skin diseases are no longer only a seasonal affliction but can be observed at any period, thanks to the tourist boom promoting aquatic holidaymaking throughout the year. This book aims to contribute to the knowledge of some aquatic animals that have only developed a poisonous apparatus to protect themselves and adapt to their environment, as well as of the various clinical pictures induced by different pathogenic mechanisms. Besides the afflictions caused by biotoxins, skin reactions to microscopic organisms present in seawater, freshwater, swimming pools and aquariums are described, together with some non-biotic forms induced by direct contact with salt and freshwater. A better knowledge of the aquatic environment may help people to enjoy this enthralling habitat at lesser risk.

American Trypanosomiasis (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2003): Kevin M. Tyler, Michael A. Miles American Trypanosomiasis (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2003)
Kevin M. Tyler, Michael A. Miles
R2,840 Discovery Miles 28 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

American trypanosomiasis, or Chagas disease, is caused by the protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi. Sixteen to eighteen million people are currently infected with this organism, and 45,000 deaths are attributed to the disease each year. Infection with T. cruzi is life-long, and 10-30% of persons who harbor the parasite chronically develop cardiac and gastrointestinal problems associated with the parasitosis. Although major progress has been made in recent years in reducing vector-borne and transfusion-associated transmission of T. cruzi, the burden of disability and death in persons chronically infected with the organism continues to be enormous. Eight to ten million persons born in countries in which Chagas disease is endemic currently reside in the United States, and epidemiologic and census data suggest that 50,000-100,000 are chronically infected with T. cruzi. The presence of these infected persons poses a risk of transmission of the parasite in the USA through blood transfusion and organ transplantation and several such cases have now been documented. American Trypanosomiasis, volume seven of World Class Parasites is written for students of tropical medicine, parasitology and public health, for researchers and practitioners alike who wish to bring themselves abreast of the status quo with respect to this disease. It is intended to supplement formal textbooks, in order to broaden and illuminate current areas of scientific and public health concern. Uniquely for T. cruzi, this book addresses parasite, vector and host biology, the pathogenesis of Chagas disease and current and prospective therapeutics and control strategies in a single volume.
