This volume looks at archaeology, language, literature, towns, warfare, rural life, art, religion and myth, trade and industry, political organizations, society and technology. It draws together material from all over pagan Celtic Europe and includes contributions from British, European and American scholars. The book addresses some important issues - Who were the ancient Celts? Can we speak of them as the first Europeans? In what form does the Celtic identity exist today and how does this relate to the ancient Celts?
This volume seeks to answer the question: "Can findings from
cognitive science enhance the user-computer interaction process?"
In so doing, it recognizes that user-computer interfaces (UCIs) are
often essential parts of an information or decision support system
-- and often critical components of software-intensive systems of
all kinds. From the outset, the authors note that the design,
prototyping, and evaluation of user-computer interfaces are part of
larger systems and are therefore ideally designed, developed, and
evaluated as part of a larger design and developmental process or
"life cycle."
Military robots and other, potentially autonomous robotic systems such as unmanned combat air vehicles (UCAVs) and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) could soon be introduced to the battlefield. Look further into the future and we may see autonomous micro- and nanorobots armed and deployed in swarms of thousands or even millions. This growing automation of warfare may come to represent a major discontinuity in the history of warfare: humans will first be removed from the battlefield and may one day even be largely excluded from the decision cycle in future high-tech and high-speed robotic warfare. Although the current technological issues will no doubt be overcome, the greatest obstacles to automated weapons on the battlefield are likely to be legal and ethical concerns. Armin Krishnan explores the technological, legal and ethical issues connected to combat robotics, examining both the opportunities and limitations of autonomous weapons. He also proposes solutions to the future regulation of military robotics through international law.

Designing inclusively is no longer an option for companies. It is a business essential. Global populations are getting older, legislation is increasingly prohibitive of unnecessary exclusion and consumer attitudes are beginning to change. Exclusivity is out, inclusivity is in. Research communities the world over are responding to this change in design emphasis. Conferences such as the Cambridge Workshops on Universal Access and Assistive Technology (CWUAAT) offer a forum for researchers from diverse and varied disciplines to bring their perspectives on inclusive design together. This book has been inspired by the second CWUAAT, held in Cambridge, England in March 2004. It contains chapters from an international group of leading researchers in this field. Contributions focus on the following topics: design issues for universal access and assistive technology; enabling computer access and new technologies; and, assistive technology and rehabilitation robotics. This series of conferences is aimed at a broad range of interests, with a general focus on the development of products and solutions. The emerging need for human-automation interaction expertise has developed from an ever-growing availability and presence of automation in our everyday lives.

Increasing technological sophistication in many countries and the
resulting larger world trade has indicated a need to pay greater
attention to the international aspects of user interfaces. Many
American companies are approaching a situation where half of their
sales are outside the United States, and companies in smaller
countries often have a much larger proportion of their sales
outside their own country. This means that software sales will
increasingly depend on their international usability and not just
their domestic usability. Seen from a user's perspective more than
half of the world's software users will be using interfaces which
were originally designed in a foreign country. Usability for this
large market of users will depend upon increased awareness of the
issues involved in designing user interfaces for international use.

Gait analysis is the systematic study of human walking, using the eye and brain of experienced observers, augmented by instrumentation for measuring body movements, body mechanics, and the activity of the muscles. Since Aristotle's work on gait analysis more than 2000 years ago, it has become an established clinical science used extensively in the healthcare and rehabilitation fields for diagnosis and treatment. Forensic Gait Analysis details the more recent, and rapidly developing, use of gait analysis in the forensic sciences. The book considers the use of observational gait analysis, based on video recordings, to assist in the process of identification or exclusion. With the increase in use of CCTV and surveillance systems over the last 20 to 30 years, there has been a steady and rapid increase in the use of gait as evidence.
