In what form does the Celtic identity exist today and how does this relate to the ancient Celts?

Cognitive Systems Engineering for User-computer Interface Design, Prototyping, and Evaluation (Hardcover): Stephen J Andriole,... Cognitive Systems Engineering for User-computer Interface Design, Prototyping, and Evaluation (Hardcover)
Stephen J Andriole, Leonard Adelman
R2,262 Discovery Miles 22 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume seeks to answer the question: "Can findings from cognitive science enhance the user-computer interaction process?" In so doing, it recognizes that user-computer interfaces (UCIs) are often essential parts of an information or decision support system -- and often critical components of software-intensive systems of all kinds. From the outset, the authors note that the design, prototyping, and evaluation of user-computer interfaces are part of larger systems and are therefore ideally designed, developed, and evaluated as part of a larger design and developmental process or "life cycle."
Thus, this book describes the process by which functional, nonfunctional, or display-oriented requirements are converted first into prototypes and then into working systems. While the process may at times seem almost mysterious, there is in fact a methodology that drives the process -- a methodology that is defined in terms of an adaptive life cycle. There are a number of steps or phases that comprise the standard life cycle, as well as methods, tools and techniques that permit each step to be taken. Describing the effort to implement this process to enhance user-computer interaction, this book presents a methodological approach that seeks to identify and apply findings from cognitive science to the design, prototyping, and evaluation of user-computer interfaces.

Killer Robots - Legality and Ethicality of Autonomous Weapons (Hardcover, New Ed): Armin Krishnan Killer Robots - Legality and Ethicality of Autonomous Weapons (Hardcover, New Ed)
Armin Krishnan
R4,408 Discovery Miles 44 080 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Military robots and other, potentially autonomous robotic systems such as unmanned combat air vehicles (UCAVs) and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) could soon be introduced to the battlefield. Look further into the future and we may see autonomous micro- and nanorobots armed and deployed in swarms of thousands or even millions. This growing automation of warfare may come to represent a major discontinuity in the history of warfare: humans will first be removed from the battlefield and may one day even be largely excluded from the decision cycle in future high-tech and high-speed robotic warfare. Although the current technological issues will no doubt be overcome, the greatest obstacles to automated weapons on the battlefield are likely to be legal and ethical concerns. Armin Krishnan explores the technological, legal and ethical issues connected to combat robotics, examining both the opportunities and limitations of autonomous weapons. He also proposes solutions to the future regulation of military robotics through international law.

Simeon Keates, John Clarkson, Patrick Langdon, Peter Robinson
R5,291 Discovery Miles 52 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Designing inclusively is no longer an option for companies. It is a business essential. Global populations are getting older, legislation is increasingly prohibitive of unnecessary exclusion and consumer attitudes are beginning to change. Exclusivity is out, inclusivity is in. Research communities the world over are responding to this change in design emphasis. Conferences such as the Cambridge Workshops on Universal Access and Assistive Technology (CWUAAT) offer a forum for researchers from diverse and varied disciplines to bring their perspectives on inclusive design together. This book has been inspired by the second CWUAAT, held in Cambridge, England in March 2004. It contains chapters from an international group of leading researchers in this field. Contributions focus on the following topics: design issues for universal access and assistive technology; enabling computer access and new technologies; and, assistive technology and rehabilitation robotics. This series of conferences is aimed at a broad range of interests, with a general focus on the development of products and solutions. Numerous case studies are used to raise awareness of the challenges faced in developing truly inclusive products, along with examples of good practice for design for a more inclusive world.

Understanding Users - Designing Experience through Layers of Meaning (Paperback): Andrew Dillon Understanding Users - Designing Experience through Layers of Meaning (Paperback)
Andrew Dillon
R1,079 Discovery Miles 10 790 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Grounded in the user-centered design movement, this book offers a broad consideration of how our civilization has evolved its technical infrastructure for human purpose to help us make sense of the contemporary world of information infrastructure and online existence. The author incorporates historical, cultural and aesthetic approaches to situating information and its underlying technologies across time in the collective, lived experiences of humanity. In today's digital information world, user experience is vital to the success of any product or service. Yet as the user population expands to include us all, designing for people who vary in skills, abilities, preferences and backgrounds is challenging. This book provides an integrated understanding of users, and the methods that have evolved to identify usability challenges, that can facilitate cohesive and earlier solutions. The book treats information creation and use as a core human behavior based on acts of representation and recording that humans have always practiced. It suggests that the traditional ways of studying information use, with their origins in the distinct layers of social science theories and models is limiting our understanding of what it means to be an information user and hampers our efforts at being truly user-centric in design. Instead, the book offers a way of integrating the knowledge base to support a richer view of use and users in design education and evaluation. Understanding Users is aimed at those studying or practicing user-centered design and anyone interested in learning how people might be better integrated in the design of new technologies to augment human capabilities and experiences.

Designing User Interfaces for International Use (Hardcover): Jakob Nielsen Designing User Interfaces for International Use (Hardcover)
Jakob Nielsen
R6,940 Discovery Miles 69 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Increasing technological sophistication in many countries and the resulting larger world trade has indicated a need to pay greater attention to the international aspects of user interfaces. Many American companies are approaching a situation where half of their sales are outside the United States, and companies in smaller countries often have a much larger proportion of their sales outside their own country. This means that software sales will increasingly depend on their international usability and not just their domestic usability. Seen from a user's perspective more than half of the world's software users will be using interfaces which were originally designed in a foreign country. Usability for this large market of users will depend upon increased awareness of the issues involved in designing user interfaces for international use.
As the European community aims to establish the so-called Single Market by the end of 1992, international software will become even more important in that part of the world. And as if it wasn't hard enough to design user interfaces for use in Europe, there are a further set of problems connected with user interfaces for Asia. Both of these issues are examined in depth.
This is the first publication of its kind to appear on the topic of international user interfaces, and presents both general guidelines and a number of detailed case studies on the many aspects entailed. The book will be of considerable interest to project managers, lecturers, students, developers of basic software and user interface designers.

Forensic Gait Analysis - Principles and Practice (Hardcover): Ivan Birch, Michael Nirenberg, Wesley Vernon, Maria Birch Forensic Gait Analysis - Principles and Practice (Hardcover)
Ivan Birch, Michael Nirenberg, Wesley Vernon, Maria Birch
R2,745 Discovery Miles 27 450 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Gait analysis is the systematic study of human walking, using the eye and brain of experienced observers, augmented by instrumentation for measuring body movements, body mechanics, and the activity of the muscles. Since Aristotle's work on gait analysis more than 2000 years ago, it has become an established clinical science used extensively in the healthcare and rehabilitation fields for diagnosis and treatment. Forensic Gait Analysis details the more recent, and rapidly developing, use of gait analysis in the forensic sciences. The book considers the use of observational gait analysis, based on video recordings, to assist in the process of identification or exclusion. With the increase in use of CCTV and surveillance systems over the last 20 to 30 years, there has been a steady and rapid increase in the use of gait as evidence. Currently, gait analysis is widely used in the UK in criminal investigations, with increasing awareness of its potential use in the US, Europe, and globally. The book details the history of the science, current practices, and of the emergent application to establish best-practice standards that conform to those of other forensic science disciplines. Engagement with the Forensic Science Regulator, and the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences in the UK, and the International Association for Identification has helped to ensure and enhance the quality assurance of forensic gait analysis. However, there remains a fundamental lack of standardized training and methodology for use in evidentiary and investigative casework. This book fills that void, serving as one of the first to describe the current state of practice, capabilities and limitations, and to outline methods, standards of practice and expectations of the gait analyst as a forensic practitioner. Forensic Gait Analysis reflects current research and forensic practice and will serve as a state-of-the-art guide to the use of gait analysis in the forensic context-for both education and training purposes. It will be a welcome addition to the libraries of professionals in the areas of podiatry, gait analysis, forensic video analysis, law enforcement, and legal practice.

Vision and Motor Control, Volume 85 (Hardcover): L. Proteau, D. Elliott Vision and Motor Control, Volume 85 (Hardcover)
L. Proteau, D. Elliott
R2,650 Discovery Miles 26 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since the classic studies of Woodworth (1899), the role of
vision in the control of movement has been an important
research topic in experimental psychology. While many early
studies were concerned with the relative importance of vision
and kinesthesis and/or the time it takes to use visual
information, recent theoretical and technical developments
have stimulated scientists to ask questions about how
different sources of visual information contribute to motor
control in different contexts.

In this volume, articles are
presented that provide a broad coverage of the current
research and theory on vision and human motor learning and
control. Many of the contributors are colleagues that have met
over the years at the meetings and conferences concerned with
human movement. They represent a wide range of affiliation and
background including kinesiology, physical education,
neurophysiology, cognitive psychology and neuropsychology.
Thus the topic of vision and motor control is addressed from a
number of different perspectives. In general, each author sets
an empirical and theoretical framework for their topic, and
then discusses current work from their own laboratory, and how
it fits into the larger context. A synthesis chapter at the end of the volume identifies commonalities in the work and suggests directions for future experimentation.

Multiple Use Job Descriptions - A Guide to Analysis, Preparation, and Applications for Human Resources Managers (Hardcover):... Multiple Use Job Descriptions - A Guide to Analysis, Preparation, and Applications for Human Resources Managers (Hardcover)
Philip C. Grant
R2,792 R2,526 Discovery Miles 25 260 Save R266 (10%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Designed as a specialized, practical reference for human resources professionals and students, this book fully explains both how to prepare and how to use job descriptions. The author breaks new ground by identifying a more extensive array of uses for job descriptions than in previous works on the subject--132 major management uses are discussed. Particular attention is given to gathering data for job descriptions and developing task/responsibility categories as an aid to understanding the design of work. Sample job descriptions are included to illustrate points made in the text. The author demonstrates the numerous ways in which job descriptions can help management make better decisions in each of the core areas of human resource management--job design, reward system design, employee staffing, employee training, and performance control. In addition, Grant addresses in detail the many typical problems organizations have with job description preparation and use, offering a wealth of suggestions for avoiding these common pitfalls.

Finally, the book shows that the design of jobs can be accurately depicted by job descriptions if attention is given to key unconventional types of information such as task times and priorities, non-work and semi-work activity, and unplanned work. An especially valuable feature is the Appendix section which contains model forms and questionnaires, log sheets, lists of objectives, rules, regulations, policies, and more. Indispensable for personnel administrators and specialists, this book is also a unique and useful management tool for department and division heads throughout the organization.
