Marijuana and the Cannabinoids (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2007): Mahmoud A. Elsohly Marijuana and the Cannabinoids (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2007)
Mahmoud A. Elsohly
R4,410 Discovery Miles 44 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although primarily used today as one of the most prevalent illicit leisure drugs, the use of Cannabis sativa L., commonly referred to as marijuana, for medicinal purposes has been reported for more than 5000 years. Marijuana use has been shown to create numerous health problems, and, consequently, the expanding use beyond medical purposes into recreational use (abuse) resulted in control of the drug through international treaties. Much research has been carried out over the past few decades following the identification of the chemical structure of THC in 1964. The purpose of Marijuana and the Cannabinoids is to present in a single volume the comprehensive knowledge and experience of renowned researchers and scientists. Each chapter is written independently by an expert in his/her field of endeavor, ranging from the botany, the constituents, the chemistry and pharmacokinetics, the effects and consequences of illicit use on the human body, to the therapeutic potential of the cannabinoids.

Forensic Anthropology and Medicine - Complementary Sciences From Recovery to Cause of Death (Paperback, Softcover reprint of... Forensic Anthropology and Medicine - Complementary Sciences From Recovery to Cause of Death (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006)
Aurore Schmitt
R5,626 Discovery Miles 56 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Recent political, religious, ethnic, and racial conflicts, as well as mass disasters, have significantly helped to bring to light the almost unknown dis- pline of forensic anthropology. This science has become particularly useful to forensic pathologists because it aids in solving various puzzles, such as id- tifying victims and documenting crimes. On topics such as mass disasters and crimes against humanity, teamwork between forensic pathologists and for- sic anthropologists has significantly increased over the few last years. This relationship has also improved the study of routine cases in local medicolegal institutes. When human remains are badly decomposed, partially skelet- ized, and/or burned, it is particularly useful for the forensic pathologist to be assisted by a forensic anthropologist. It is not a one-way situation: when the forensic anthropologist deals with skeletonized bodies that have some kind of soft tissue, the advice of a forensic pathologist would be welcome. Forensic anthropology is a subspecialty/field of physical anthropology. Most of the background on skeletal biology was gathered on the basis of sk- etal remains from past populations. Physical anthropologists then developed an indisputable "know-how"; nevertheless, one must keep in mind that looking for a missing person or checking an assumed identity is quite a different matter. Pieces of information needed by forensic anthropologists require a higher level of reliability and accuracy than those granted in a general archaeological c- text. To achieve a positive identification, findings have to match with e- dence, particularly when genetic identification is not possible.

A systematic study of the autonomic nervous system and cardiac system has been performed on a large number of infants and fetuses who died suddenly and unexpectedly, as well as in age-matched control cases. The neurological and cardiac findings are described here, and the relationship between SIDS and unexplained fetal death is discussed.

Guidelines for Reports by Autopsy Pathologists (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008): Vernard Irvine Adams Guidelines for Reports by Autopsy Pathologists (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)
Vernard Irvine Adams
R2,628 Discovery Miles 26 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Guidelines for Reports by Autopsy Pathologists is intended to help the autopsy pathologist produce reports that communicate well. Having evolved from a coll- tion of faculty critiques of the autopsy reports, summary and opinion reports, scene reports, and death certi?cates produced by residents in anatomic pathology and f- lows in forensic pathology, the book emphasizes topics that have been troublesome for trainees. For clinicians, the medical record describes their work product. For autopsy pathologists, the written report is the work product and demands an acco- ingly higher standard of composition. Most reports produced by pathologists can be divided into objective and subjective elements, or, in other words, ?ndings and opinions. The pathologist must have a clear understanding of the linkage between the two. When composing a report, the autopsy pathologist should serve the goal of c- municating to the parties who will read the report, namely, the case pathologist him- or herself (at a later date), attorneys, the family of the decedent, and other physicians. I believe that careless and imprecise thinking leads to sloppy language, and that sloppy language leads to careless and imprecise thinking. In my experience, pathologists who learn how to clearly express and organize their ?ndings and op- ions in a written format make more detailed and focused observations at the autopsy table.

Essential Forensic Pathology - Core Studies and Exercises (Hardcover, New): Gilbert Corrigan Essential Forensic Pathology - Core Studies and Exercises (Hardcover, New)
Gilbert Corrigan
R4,482 Discovery Miles 44 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A myriad of different scenarios await those entering the field of forensic pathology, ranging from gunshot wounds to asphyxiation to explosives to death from addiction. Essential Forensic Pathology: Core Studies and Exercises helps prepare pathologists in training by establishing what they must know about the most common death scenes they will encounter. The book begins by discussing the coaching objectives in medical education and follows with a description of the 15 different rotations of the forensic pathology resident. Using a consistent and concise format, the book describes the facility where the rotation takes place, the necessary skills, the laboratory equipment, and other components of the rotation. The main portion of the book presents forensic pathology essentials in the form of learning objectives-each delineated with a code: "M" for items students must know, and "S" for those they must do. This section begins by discussing the government's role, describes medical examiner and coroner systems, and analyzes the academic discipline of forensic pathology. Next, the book focuses on hands-on elements of forensic pathology, with chapters on scene investigation, identification, and postmortem changes (signs of death). Objectives are also presented for various causes of death, including gunshot wounds, stab wounds, asphyxiation, sex-related death, and death from addiction. Additional chapters cover bombs and explosive devices, mental disease, epidemics, and issues related to forensic entomology. Each chapter contains a list of pertinent vocabulary and references for further study. By mastering the objectives contained in each chapter of this manual, forensic pathology students will be ready to pass certification exams and work confidently in the field.

Heavily illustrated and enhanced with a 16-page color insert with additional photos, this volume captures the critical issues that confront today's forensic dentist, explores the field's limitations, and provides a window on the future of this crucial sector within the forensic identification science arena.

Forensic Epidemiology (Hardcover, New): Steven A. Koehler, Peggy A. Brown Forensic Epidemiology (Hardcover, New)
Steven A. Koehler, Peggy A. Brown
R4,929 Discovery Miles 49 290 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

After 9/11, forensic epidemiology emerged as a leading investigative tool, partnering public health officers with law enforcement like never before. Based on the authors' first-hand experience, Forensic Epidemiology brings to light the vast amounts of information collected by medical examiners that will be useful in advancing death investigation techniques among the forensic science, public health, and law enforcement fields. This practical resource begins with a brief overview of epidemiological science and the history of forensic epidemiology before examining the multiple functions of death certificates and the signature role of forensic epidemiologists in death investigations. Incorporating numerous illustrations and real-world examples, the book: Explains proven methods to collect, analyze, and interpret data for criminal investigations Defines the terminology, methodology, procedures, and goals of all sectors involved for more effective collaboration Examines deaths from natural, suicidal, accidental, homicidal, and undetermined causes Describes the various decomposition states and methods used to establish positive identity The increased frequency of criminal acts that involve deliberate biological and chemical agents underscores the need for collaboration between law enforcement investigators and public health professionals. As Forensic Epidemiology effectively demonstrates, when they work together, they can mount a powerful and successful response to threats to the American public. Dr. Steven A. Koehler was interviewed in Volume 12 of Anil Aggrawal's Internet Journal of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology.

Wrongful Conviction in Sexual Assault - Stranger Rape, Acquaintance Rape, and Intra-familial Child Sexual Assaults (Hardcover):... Wrongful Conviction in Sexual Assault - Stranger Rape, Acquaintance Rape, and Intra-familial Child Sexual Assaults (Hardcover)
Matthew Barry Johnson
R1,621 Discovery Miles 16 210 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In Wrongful Conviction in Sexual Assault, Matthew Barry Johnson introduces new directions in wrongful conviction research and understanding. Citing Innocence Project and National Registry of Exoneration data, the book identifies sexual assault as the predominant offense type associated with confirmed wrongful convictions in the US. Johnson outlines the differential risk of wrongful conviction associated with stranger rape, acquaintance rape, and intra-familial child sexual abuse. He also introduces new terms and concepts such as "black box" investigation, illustrating the lack of transparency in the production of prosecution evidence; a four-part stranger rape thesis; and the "moral outrage - moral correction" process that results in cognitive and emotional factors that interfere with the evaluation of criminal evidence. The book also includes chapters on racial bias in rape prosecution, and the relationship of serial sex offending to wrongful conviction. Citing both foundational and newly-introduced conviction research, Johnson illustrates unexamined aspects of well-known wrongful conviction cases (i.e. The Central Park Five, Steve Avery, Ronald Cotton, The Norfolk Four) and presents the lessons from lesser known wrongful convictions. Wrongful Conviction in Sexual Assault provides valuable new perspectives and insight for psychologists, defense lawyers, prosecutors, crime investigators, and social justice scholars.

Bird Flu - Everything You Need to Know about the Next Pandemic (Hardcover): Marc Siegel Bird Flu - Everything You Need to Know about the Next Pandemic (Hardcover)
Marc Siegel
R693 R620 Discovery Miles 6 200 Save R73 (11%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Marc Siegel is an articulate voice of reason in a world beset by hype and hysteria. We would be well advised to listen closely to what he has to say.
-Jerome Groopman, M.D., staff writer, the New Yorker
""Siegel cuts through the hype about the 'deadly' this and the 'lethal' that, and applies reason in seeking the answers.""
-John M. Barry, author of The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History
""Timely and needed. At such times, we need soothsayers and explicators to redirect the ready-fire-aim mindset. Siegel's book fulfills this role well.""
-The Journal of the American Medical Association
As bird flu sweeps through Asia, the rest of the world has begun to worry that it might spread west and start infecting humans. As many experts have pointed out, an influenza pandemic is only a matter of time and that time could be now. Or is it? In Bird Flu, Dr. Marc Siegel cuts through the hype, the facts, the fears, and the realities to explain what has the experts so worried and why there's still plenty of reason to be calm. Among the questions he answers are:
* What is bird flu, and who has it?
* What can I do to protect my family?
* Should I stockpile Tamiflu?
* Will this be like the deadly Spanish flu of 1918?
* Why is there no bird flu vaccine?
* Will the annual flu shot protect me?
In his sensible and entertaining style, Siegel looks at the advances we've made in treatments, the research still to be done, and the challenges ahead for Asia to lay out a realistic plan for ending this global threat. While a bird flu outbreak in the United States may or may not happen this year, there's still a great deal of work to be done in readying America for outbreaks of any kind.

Gregory Murrey, Ph.D., Donald Starzinski, Ph.D., M.D
R5,518 Discovery Miles 55 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Drawing on the expertise of several well-known figures in the medical, neuropsychological, and legal professions, Forensic Evaluation of Traumatic Brain Injury: A Handbook for Clinicians and Attorneys, Second Edition provides a concise, general overview of the forensic assessment process and the issues surrounding Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The book identifies key topics involved in forensic assessment, including definitions and select medical diagnostic terminology, and reviews the neurologic, neuropsychiatric, neuropsychological, and psychological assessment processes specific to brain injury cases. The second edition is updated and revised to include a new chapter on neuropsychiatric evaluation as performed by a clinical or forensic neuropsychiatrist. It delineates the distinct differences between the forensic neurological and neuropsychiatric assessments, acknowledging the overlaps and defining the separate focus of each discipline. New information on forensic testimony and the forensic examiner as an expert witness covers the qualifications and credibility of the forensic expert and the admissibility of expert testimony in TBI cases. The handbook highlights the most recent court rulings and possible modification to the admissibility of forensic testimony. Also new to this edition is a chapter on neuropsychological rehabilitation issues after TBI. It outlines crucial information on treatments, services, and facilities that may be required temporarily or ongoing and thus have bearing during litigation and on the outcome of a traumatic brain injury case. Forensic Evaluation of Traumatic Brain Injury: A Handbook for Clinicians and Attorneys, Second Edition offers clinically usefuland practical tables and reference pages that are indispensable for forensic examiners, expert witnesses, and legal professionals alike.

Forensic Evidence - Science and the Criminal Law, Second Edition (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Terrence F. Kiely Forensic Evidence - Science and the Criminal Law, Second Edition (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Terrence F. Kiely
R4,973 Discovery Miles 49 730 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

One of the greatest challenges encountered by those in the forensic sciences is anticipating what the state and federal courts will - "or will not "- allow as valid physical evidence. With this in mind, the author of Forensic Evidence: Science and the Criminal Law, Second Edition analyzes and explains the judicial system's response to the applicability of forensic science in the investigation, prosecution, and defense of criminal activity.

Each chapter of this comprehensive yet accessible resource provides an overview and analysis of the scientific and legal aspects of a particular forensic discipline. An important new feature of this second edition is that each chapter focuses on discussions of recent forensics literature reviews from Interpol's 14th Annual Forensic Science Symposium. This latest edition also updates previously discussed cases and presents the most recent applications of the Frye and Daubert standards, the admissibility of eyewitnessidentification, the upsurge of cases and statutes that involve post-conviction DNA, and the increased interest in re-examining cold cases.

As challenges to forensic evidence become increasingly rigorous, so does the need for intense preparation. Forensic Evidence: Science and the Criminal Law, Second Edition is "the" book that those in the forensic sciences need to have on hand to successfully prepare for what may await them in the courtroom.

Gewissenlos - Die Psychopathen unter uns (German, Hardcover, 2005 ed.): Robert D. Hare Gewissenlos - Die Psychopathen unter uns (German, Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Robert D. Hare; Translated by Karsten Petersen
R1,522 R1,247 Discovery Miles 12 470 Save R275 (18%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sexual Harassment - Psychiatric Assessment in Employment Litigation (Hardcover, New): Liza H. Gold Sexual Harassment - Psychiatric Assessment in Employment Litigation (Hardcover, New)
Liza H. Gold
R2,053 Discovery Miles 20 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This comprehensive text stands alone in addressing sexual harassment from a forensic psychiatric perspective. Sexual Harassment: Psychiatric Assessment in Employment Litigation reviews the law, social science research, clinical experience, and principles of forensic evaluation relevant to the highly adversarial legal arena of sexual harassment litigation. This illuminating guide covers every aspect of psychiatric assessment in sexual harassment litigation: definition/legal history, bias/gender, credibility/malingering, "welcomeness," "reasonableness," causation, and emotional injury and damages. In an area where few training or educational opportunities exist, Dr. Gold presents a structured framework for these evaluations, including case examples that bring this framework to life.

No single response or specific psychiatric problem is associated with sexual harassment. Not all experiences of sexual harassment even constitute illegal employment discrimination. The term itself covers a wide range of behaviors, from annoying to traumatic. Likewise, the responses to such events, real or perceived, are broadly diverse. Further, the difficulties and ambiguities that arise at the interface of psychiatry, the legal system, and the social issues raised by sexual harassment make the application of psychiatric knowledge and expertise in such cases uniquely challenging.

This work provides invaluable assistance in helping mental health experts meet these challenges while also serving the legal system's goal of adjudicating disputes in the interest of serving justice. It emphasizes that experts should - Base their evaluations and testimony on a thorough evaluation of the issues in each case.- Acquire the intellectual tools needed, including familiarity with gender issues, the effects of stress and trauma, the scope and effects of sexual harassment, and an awareness of the potential biases that may influence opinions.- Understand the scientific basis of their testimony.

As the definitive work on the forensic psychiatric aspects of sexual harassment, this work explores and bridges the interface between the law, social science, psychiatry, and employment issues. This classic volume will provide invaluable assistance to psychiatrists and psychologists in formulating credible, well-reasoned opinions in an evolving and controversial area of the law. Other mental health professionals and educators, as well as members of the legal and human resources community, will also find that this in-depth study increases their understanding and appreciation of the complexities and challenges of psychiatric evaluations in sexual harassment litigation.
