Paediatric Forensic Medicine and Pathology (Hardcover, Softcover Repri): J.K. Mason Paediatric Forensic Medicine and Pathology (Hardcover, Softcover Repri)
J.K. Mason
R2,644 Discovery Miles 26 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A feature of forensic medicine is that it crosses both medical and legal boundaries. The increasing complexity of modern medicine and the changing attitudes of patients to the provision of medical care dictate the need for a corresponding increase in forensic medical knowledge. This is particularly true in the case of paediatric forensic medicine and pathology.;Children are not simply small adults. They have their special medico-legal problems just as they need a distinct clinical expertise. The medico-legal problems of childhood, including the very topical subjects of assisted reproduction and of child abuse, are worldwide. The editor has had an opportunity to combine legal and medical experience and has introduced a format in forensic medical writing whereby doctors and lawyers contribute to distinctive parts of the whole work. As a result the book should appeal to practitioners in both professions who are concerned with the medico-legal aspects of reproduction, infancy and childhood.

***PBS's AMERICAN EXPERIENCE released a film based on "The Poisoner's Handbook "in January 2014***
Equal parts true crime, twentieth-century history, and science thriller, "The Poisoner's Handbook" is "a vicious, page-turning story that reads more like Raymond Chandler than Madame Curie" ("The New York Observer")
A fascinating Jazz Age tale of chemistry and detection, poison and murder, "The Poisoner's Handbook" is a page-turning account of a forgotten era. In early twentieth-century New York, poisons offered an easy path to the perfect crime. Science had no place in the Tammany Hall-controlled coroner's office, and corruption ran rampant. However, with the appointment of chief medical examiner Charles Norris in 1918, the poison game changed forever. Together with toxicologist Alexander Gettler, the duo set the justice system on fire with their trailblazing scientific detective work, triumphing over seemingly unbeatable odds to become the pioneers of forensic chemistry and the gatekeepers of justice.

The Handbook of Forensic Sexology - Biomedical and Criminological Perspectives (Hardcover, New): James J. Krivacska, John Money The Handbook of Forensic Sexology - Biomedical and Criminological Perspectives (Hardcover, New)
James J. Krivacska, John Money
R3,168 R2,577 Discovery Miles 25 770 Save R591 (19%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The relationship of scientific research on human sexuality (sexology) to society's legal, judicial, and law enforcement systems (forensics) is the focus of this encyclopaedic volume. Editors James J. Krivacska and John Money have assembled contributions by leading experts, covering a wide range of legal and medical issues pertaining to the interconnection between law and sexual behaviour. Section one examines the nature of paraphilic behaviour and the social framework within which some of it becomes illegal. The topics discussed include sodomy, paedophilia, incest, sexual abuse, rape, exhibitionism, prostitution, and sexual harassment. Section two looks at current strategies for assessing the problems of sex offenders and victims. Among the areas addressed are 'real' sexual abuse vs. 'manufactured' allegations of abuse memories, allegations of satanism and ritual sexual abuse, and the difficulties of treating sex offenders within a legal framework. The final section argues that sexology has much to contribute to the debate of the appropriate role of government in regulating the private sexual behaviour of the citizenry. Sex education, contraception, abortion, AIDS, pornography, social tolerance vs. criminalisation, and a comparative view of public sex policy in China and Russia are among the subjects reviewed.

Marius Leander Huesmann
R2,035 Discovery Miles 20 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Skeletal Atlas of Child Abuse (Hardcover, Edition.): Jennifer C. Love, Sharon M. Derrick, Jason M. Wiersema Skeletal Atlas of Child Abuse (Hardcover, Edition.)
Jennifer C. Love, Sharon M. Derrick, Jason M. Wiersema
R6,613 Discovery Miles 66 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This illustrated guide to the role of the forensic anthropologist in investigating child abuse is an essential resource in one of the most contentious areas of forensic pathology. Not only does it supply a review of the literature in this field, but it illustrates the material with photographs from real cases investigated by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, which serves a population of four million people. Broken down into body regions and skeletal elements for ease of reference, the atlas facilitates the vital work performed by forensic anthropologists, who bring to the autopsy table a store of specialist knowledge that can turn a case. Despite the frequency of child fatalities (in America, 2.3per 100,000) attributed to physical abuse, merely recognizing the offense is a major forensic challenge. The tell-tale signatures of non-accidental injury can be very subtle, making it difficult to differentiate between accidental and non-accidental injury. Yet successful adjudication of a child abuse case often rests on the correct interpretation of skeletal injury. In this volume the authors guide the reader through published data regarding the mechanics and interpretation of injuries, including the agencies they indicate. The material includes discussion of the limitations faced in interpreting some injuries, where making a judgment on cause is tricky. In addition, a chapter on natural diseases affecting the bones provides a good overview of several conditions that are often invoked as 'mimics' of child abuse. Finally, this publication evinces the value of collaboration between the pathologist and the anthropologist.

Donna L. Harrison
R2,799 R2,498 Discovery Miles 24 980 Save R301 (11%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Investigations in Sex Estimation: A Comparison of Morphological and Metrical Methods is a collective comparison of the many morphological and metric methods currently used on adult and juvenile human remains. This single comprehensive resource for sex estimation in skeletal material includes discussion on the evolution of sexual dimorphism in modern humans, how sexual dimorphism manifests itself in those bones, the growth development in juveniles and how sexual dimorphism can be measured in their bones. Data is presented which contradicts previously held postulates and some different uses of sex estimation methods are suggested, such as using the grading system to assess evolutionary change in skeletons or grouping juveniles into smaller groups by age to better estimate sex. New insights are offered for future research from the presentation of case studies on gender and a comparison of the sex differences between two African-American collections which suggests a correlation between occupation and evolutionary change. To achieve the objective, data on 294 adults from four diverse collections of known sex are obtained using a total of 67 morphological and metric methods. An additional 23 morphological and metric methods used on juveniles, aged 0 to 18, from two of the collections. The methods are specific to either the cranium, mandible, pelvis, humerus or femur. The compilation of assessment of sex provides definitive answers on which type of method, morphological or metric, is more accurate, which morphological and metric methods are the most accurate, and which bones are more reliable to estimate sex especially in the absence of a pelvis. Investigations in Sex Estimation is intended to be used in the field and the laboratory for the identification of sex in human remains and aims to provide a wealth of data for future research in sexual dimorphic studies.

Post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) is increasingly used in forensic pathology practice in many jurisdictions. Such imaging has expanded the capacity to evaluate skeletal trauma improving the visualisation, documentation and presentation of forensic findings. Typically when deceased persons are located and exhibit evidence of trauma, forensic pathologist, anthropologists and radiologists base their interpretations of the mechanism of trauma on their experience and understanding of the biomechanics of fractures as well as recognisable patterns of injury. In order to augment this process, An Atlas of Forensic Skeletal Trauma presents a range of de-identified adult and child skeletal trauma cases that occur in medico-legal contexts where the cause of death and mechanism of trauma are recorded. An Atlas of Forensic Skeletal Trauma includes comprehensive photographs and PMCT images as well as descriptive text.
