In this book, Morris explores the intersection of curriculum
studies, Holocaust studies, and psychoanalysis, using the Holocaust
to raise issues of memory and representation. Arguing that memory
is the larger category under which history is subsumed, she
examines the ways in which the Holocaust is represented in texts
written by historians and by novelists. For both, psychological
transference, repression, denial, projection, and reversal
contribute heavily to shaping personal memories, and may therefore
determine the ways in which they construct the past. The way the
Holocaust is represented in curricula is the way it is remembered.
Interrogations of this memory are crucial to our understandings of
who we are in today's world. The subject of this text--how this
memory is represented and how the process of remembering it is
taught--is thus central to education today.
"The Papon Affair" is the definitive English-language work on a
trial that is now considered to be the most significant in late
twentieth-century France. Papon, who served as a Vichy bureaucrat,
was charged with assisting in the deportation of several trainloads
of Jews from the Bordeaux region to Nazi death camps between 1942
and 1944. After the War, his career included both a stint as
Prefect of Paris Police and as a cabinet finance minister. The
inconclusiveness of the verdict which, even after six months of
testimony, left unresolved not only important legal and historical
issues, but political, philosophical and moral issues as well.
Richard Golsan has brought together the crucial French journalistic
pieces on the trial along with several essays by leading American
and British scholars to help contextualize the trial for an
English-speaking audience. The book delves deeply into the
fascinating debates about the nature of French complicity in the
Final Solution and of memory itself.
In order to ensure its racial, ideological, and strategic
interests, the Hitler regime actively supported the status quo in
Palestine and the Middle East during the interwar period. This
included the perpetuation of British imperial power in Palestine,
the Jewish National Home (not an independent Jewish state) promised

This book presents the first comparative study of the works of Charlotte Delbo, Noor Inayat Khan, and Germaine Tillion in relation to their vigorous struggles against Nazi aggression during World War II and the Holocaust. It illuminates ways in which their early lives conditioned both their political engagements during wartime and their extraordinary literary creations empowered by what Lara R. Curtis refers to as modes of 'writing resistance.' With skillful recourse to a remarkable variety of genres, they offer compelling autobiographical reflections, vivid chronicles of wartime atrocities, eyewitness accounts of victims, and acute perspectives on the political implications of major events. Their sensitive reflections of gendered subjectivity authenticate the myriad voices and visions they capture. In sum, this book highlights the lives and works of three courageous women who were ceaselessly committed to a noble cause during the Holocaust and World War II.

Volume two effectively attempts to capture how step-by-step these Nazi innovators attempted to transform the Fuhrer's wish of a Jewish-free Europe into a frightening reality. By the books' end the reader will gain an insight into how the seemingly undoable can become increasingly doable.
To forget after Auschwitz is considered barbaric. Baer and Sznaider question this assumption not only in regard to the Holocaust but to other political crimes as well. The duties of memory surrounding the Holocaust have spread around the globe and interacted with other narratives of victimization that demand equal treatment. Are there crimes that must be forgotten and others that should be remembered? In this book the authors examine the effects of a globalized Holocaust culture on the ways in which individuals and groups understand the moral and political significance of their respective histories of extreme political violence. Do such transnational memories facilitate or hamper the task of coming to terms with and overcoming divisive pasts? Taking Argentina, Spain and a number of sites in post-communist Europe as test cases, this book illustrates the transformation from a nationally oriented ethics to a trans-national one. The authors look at media, scholarly discourse, NGOs dealing with human rights and memory, museums and memorial sites, and examine how a new generation of memory activists revisits the past to construct a new future. Baer and Sznaider follow these attempts to manoeuvre between the duties of remembrance and the benefits of forgetting. This, the authors argue, is the "ethics of Never Again."
The White Terror was a movement of right-wing militias that for two years actively tracked down, tortured, and murdered members of the Jewish community, as well as former supporters of the short-lived Council Republic in the years following World War I. It can be argued that this example of a programme of virulent antisemitism laid the foundations for Hungarian participation in the Holocaust. Given the rightward shift of Hungarian politics today, this book has a particular resonance in re-examining the social and historical context of the White Terror.

Magic was the name given to the American decoding of the secret Japanese codes used in diplomatic communications before and during the Pacific War of 1941-45. Presenting a Japanese perspective, this work argues that, in the final phase of the eight months of US-Japan talks leading to the attack on Pearl Harbor, serious mistranslations in Magic were a significant factor in the cumulative effect of mutual misunderstandings which grew between the two sides over a longer period.
An extraordinary and unique document: Hoess was in charge of the huge extermination camp in Poland where the Nazis murdered some three million Jews, from the time of its creation (he was responsible for building it) in 1940 until late in 1943, by which time the mass exterminations were half completed. Before this he had worked in other concentration camps, and afterwards he was at the Inspectorate in Berlin. He thus knew more, both at first-hand and as an administrator, about Nazi Germany's greatest crime than did any save two or three other men. Taken prisoner by the British, he was handed over to the Poles, tried, sentenced to death, and taken back to Auschwitz and there hanged. During the period between his trial and his execution, he was ordered to write his autobiography. This is it. Hoess repeatedly says he was glad to write the book. He enjoyed the work. And finally the most careful checking has shown that he took great pains to tell the truth. Here we have, painted by his own hand, a vivid and unforgettable self-portrait of one of the great monsters of all time. To this are added portraits of some of his more spectacular fellow-criminals. A prominent Viennese psychiatrist before the war, Viktor Frankl was uniquely able to observe the way that both he and others in Auschwitz coped (or didn't) with the experience.
