R7,861 Discovery Miles 78 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume contains all twenty-three of the principal survey papers presented at the Symposium on Ordered Sets held at Banff, Canada from August 28 to September 12, 1981. The Symposium was supported by grants from the NATO Advanced Study Institute programme, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Mathematical Society Summer Research Institute programme, and the University of Calgary. tve are very grateful to these Organizations for their considerable interest and support. Over forty years ago on April 15, 1938 the first Symposium on Lattice Theory was held in Charlottesville, U.S.A. in conjunction with a meeting of the American Mathematical Society. The principal addresses on that occasion were Lattices and their applications by G. Birkhoff, On the application of structure theory to groups by O. Ore, and The representation of Boolean algebras by M. H. Stone. The texts of these addresses and three others by R. Baer, H. M. MacNeille, and K. Menger appear in the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, Volume 44, 1938. In those days the theory of ordered sets, and especially lattice theory was described as a "vigorous and promising younger brother of group theory." Some early workers hoped that lattice theoretic methods would lead to solutions of important problems in group theory."

Perspectives on School Algebra (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): Rosamund Sutherland, Teresa Rojano, Alan Bell, Romulo Lins Perspectives on School Algebra (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
Rosamund Sutherland, Teresa Rojano, Alan Bell, Romulo Lins
R4,164 Discovery Miles 41 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book confronts the issue of how young people can find a way into the world of algebra. It represents multiple perspectives which include an analysis of situations in which algebra is an efficient problem-solving tool, the use of computer-based technologies, and a consideration of the historical evolution of algebra. The book emphasizes the situated nature of algebraic activity as opposed to being concerned with identifying students' conceptions in isolation from problem-solving activity.

Multiple Perspectives on Mathematics Teaching and Learning offers a collection of chapters that take a new look at mathematics education. Leading authors, such as Deborah Ball, Paul Cobb, Jim Greeno, Stephen Lerman, and Michael Apple, draw from a range of perspectives in their analyses of mathematics teaching and learning. They address such practical problems as: the design of teaching and research that acknowledges the social nature of learning, maximizing the impact of teacher education programs, increasing the learning opportunities of students working in groups, and ameliorating the impact of male domination in mixed classrooms. These practical insights are combined with important advances in theory. Several of the authors address the nature of learning and teaching, including the ways in which theories and practices of mathematics education recognize learning as simultaneously social and individual. The issues addressed include teaching practices, equity, language, assessment, group work and the broader political context of mathematics reform. The contributors variously employ sociological, anthropological, psychological, sociocultural, political, and mathematical perspectives to produce powerful analyses of mathematics teaching and learning.

Computability - A Mathematical Sketchbook (Hardcover, 1994 ed.): Douglas S. Bridges Computability - A Mathematical Sketchbook (Hardcover, 1994 ed.)
Douglas S. Bridges
R1,992 Discovery Miles 19 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Aimed at mathematicians and computer scientists who will only be exposed to one course in this area, Computability: A Mathematical Sketchbook provides a brief but rigorous introduction to the abstract theory of computation, sometimes also referred to as recursion theory. It develops major themes in computability theory, such as Rice's theorem and the recursion theorem, and provides a systematic account of Blum's complexity theory as well as an introduction to the theory of computable real numbers and functions. The book is intended as a university text, but it may also be used for self-study; appropriate exercises and solutions are included.

This reference book, which has found wide use as a text, provides an answer to the needs of graduate physical mathematics students and their teachers. The present edition is a thorough revision of the first, including a new chapter entitled Connections on Principle Fibre Bundles'' which includes sections on holonomy, characteristic classes, invariant curvature integrals and problems on the geometry of gauge fields, monopoles, instantons, spin structure and spin connections. Many paragraphs have been rewritten, and examples and exercises added to ease the study of several chapters. The index includes over 130 entries.

Mathematics Education within the Postmodern (Hardcover, illustrated Edition): Margaret Walshaw Mathematics Education within the Postmodern (Hardcover, illustrated Edition)
Margaret Walshaw; Contributions by Leone Burton
R2,809 Discovery Miles 28 090 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The papers presented in this volume are all very welcome because they challenge accepted wisdoms about both the nature of mathematics and of education. They bring to bear on this intersection a postmodern sensibility which engages with the grand narratives of mathematics education. It is a groundbreaking volume in which each of the chapters develops for mathematics education the importance of insights from mainly French intellectuals of the past: Foucault, Lacan, Lyotard, Deleuze. The chapters address issues relevant to mathematics education, not from the discipline's familiar viewpoints, but towards theory development for mathematics education in contemporary society. What is particularly important is the way in which their analyses of the discursive practices that make up mathematics education allow us to think differently about researching and teaching mathematics.

The Trachtenberg Speed System of Basic Mathematics (Paperback, Main): Jakow Trachtenberg The Trachtenberg Speed System of Basic Mathematics (Paperback, Main)
Jakow Trachtenberg; Translated by Ann Cutler, Rudolph McShane
R308 Discovery Miles 3 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Do high-speed, complicated arithmetic in your head using the Trachtenberg Speed System. Ever find yourself struggling to check a bill or a payslip? With The Trachtenberg Speed System you can. Described as the 'shorthand of mathematics', the Trachtenberg system only requires the ability to count from one to eleven. Using a series of simplified keys it allows anyone to master calculations, giving greater speed, ease in handling numbers and increased accuracy. Jakow Trachtenberg believed that everyone is born with phenomenal abilities to calculate. He devised a set of rules that allows every child to make multiplication, division, addition, subtraction and square-root calculations with unerring accuracy and at remarkable speed. It is the perfect way to gain confidence with numbers.

Formerly, Research Associate A lleyany Ballistics Laboratory Office of Scientific Research and Development National Defense Research Committee NKW YORK AND LONDON MCGRAW-HILL BOOK COMPANY, INC. 1947 MATHEMATICAL THEORY OF ROCKET FLIGHT PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA PREFACE This is the official final report to the Office of Scientific Research and Development concerning the work done on the exterior ballistics of fin-stabilized rocket projectiles under the supervision of Section H of Division 3 of the National Defense Research Committee at the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory during 1944 and 1945, when the laboratory was operated by The George Washington University under contract OEMsr-273 with the Office of Scientific Research and Devel opment. As such, its official title is Final Report No. B2.2 of the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, OSRD 5878. After the removal of secrecy restrictions on this report, a consider able amount of expository material was added. It is our hope that thereby the report has been made readable for anyone interested in the flight of rockets. Two slightly different types of readers are antici pated. One is the trained scientist who has had no previous experience with rockets. Theother is the person with little scientific training who is interested in what makes a rocket go. The first type of reader should be able to comprehend the report in its entirety. For the benefit of the second type of reader, who will wish to skip the more mathematical portions, wo have attempted to supply simple explana tions at the beginnings of most sections telling what is to be accom plished in those sections. It is our hope that a reader can, if so minded, skip most of the mathematics and still be able to form a general idea of rocket flight. Although this is a report of the work done at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, it must not be supposed that all the material in the report originated there. We have been most fortunate in receiving the whole hearted cooperation and assistance of scientists in other laboratories. Many of them, notably the English scientists, were well advanced in the theory before we even began. Without the fine start given us by these other workers, this report could certainly not have been written. However, we were fortunate enough to discover two means of avoiding certain difficulties of the theory. The first is that of using some dynamical laws especially suited to rockets in deriving the equations of motion, and the second is that of using some mathematical functions especially suited to rockets in solving the equations of motion. The explanation and illustration of these simplifying devices take up a considerable portion of the report, although for completeness we have included material not involving them. vi PREFACE In attempting to acknowledge the contributions of other workers, we are in a difficult position. Approximately a hundred reports by otherworkers were useful in one way or another in the preparatf on of this report. However, most of them are still bound by military secrecy, so that only the few cited in our meager list of bibliographical references can be mentioned here. Many figures are copied from these unmentioiied reports. Sizable portions of our report, such as Chap. II and Appendix 1, lean very heavily on certain of these unmentioned reports, but no specific credit is given...

The Construction of New Mathematical Knowledge in Classroom Interaction - An Epistemological Perspective (Hardcover, 2005 ed.):... The Construction of New Mathematical Knowledge in Classroom Interaction - An Epistemological Perspective (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Heinz Steinbring
R2,670 Discovery Miles 26 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Construction of New Mathematical Knowledge in Classroom Interaction deals with the very specific characteristics of mathematical communication in the classroom. The general research question of this book is: How can everyday mathematics teaching be described, understood and developed as a teaching and learning environment in which the students gain mathematical insights and increasing mathematical competence by means of the teachera (TM)s initiatives, offers and challenges? How can the a ~qualitya (TM) of mathematics teaching be realized and appropriately described? And the following more specific research question is investigated: How is new mathematical knowledge interactively constructed in a typical instructional communication among students together with the teacher? In order to answer this question, an attempt is made to enter as in-depth as possible under the surface of the visible phenomena of the observable everyday teaching events. In order to do so, theoretical views about mathematical knowledge and communication are elaborated.

The careful qualitative analyses of several episodes of mathematics teaching in primary school is based on an epistemologically oriented analysis Steinbring has developed over the last years and applied to mathematics teaching of different grades. The book offers a coherent presentation and a meticulous application of this fundamental research method in mathematics education that establishes a reciprocal relationship between everyday classroom communication and epistemological conditions of mathematical knowledge constructed in interaction.

These are the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Approximation Theory, Spline Functions and Applications held in the Hotel villa del Mare, Maratea, Italy between April 28,1991 and May 9, 1991. The principal aim of the Advanced Study Institute, as reflected in these Proceedings, was to bring together recent and up-to-date developments of the subject, and to give directions for future research. Amongst the main topics covered during this Advanced Study Institute is the subject of uni variate and multivariate wavelet decomposition over spline spaces. This is a relatively new area in approximation theory and an increasingly impor tant subject. The work involves key techniques in approximation theory cardinal splines, B-splines, Euler-Frobenius polynomials, spline spaces with non-uniform knot sequences. A number of scientific applications are also highlighted, most notably applications to signal processing and digital im age processing. Developments in the area of approximation of functions examined in the course of our discussions include approximation of periodic phenomena over irregular node distributions, scattered data interpolation, Pade approximants in one and several variables, approximation properties of weighted Chebyshev polynomials, minimax approximations, and the Strang Fix conditions and their relation to radial functions. Calculus For The Practical Man (Hardcover): J. E. Thompson Calculus For The Practical Man (Hardcover)
J. E. Thompson
R1,053 Discovery Miles 10 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

CALCULUS For the Practical Man by J. E. THOMPSON. Originally published in 1931. PREFACE: THIS book on simplified calculus is one of a series designed by the author and publisher for the reader with an interest in the meaning and simpler technique of mathematical science, and for those who wish to obtain a practical mastery of some of the more usual and directly useful branches of the science without the aid of a teacher. Like the other books in the series it is the outgrowth of the author's experience with students such as those mentioned and the demand experienced by the publisher for books which may be read as well as studied. One of the outstanding features of the book is the use of the method of rates instead of the method of limits. To the conven tional teacher of mathematics, whose students work for a college degree and look toward the modern theory of functions, the author hastens to say that for their purposes the limit method is the only method which can profitably be used. To the readers contem plated in the preparation of this book, however, the notion of a limit and any method of calculation based upon it always seem artificial and not hi any way connected with the familiar ideas of numbers, algebraic symbolism or natural phenomena. On the other hand, the method of rates seems a direct application of the principle which such a reader has often heard mentioned as the extension of arithmetic and algebra with which he must become acquainted before he can perform calculations which involve changing quantities. The familiarity of examples of changing quantities in every-day life also makes it a simple matter to in troduce the terminology of the calculus; teachers and readers willrecall the difficulty encountered in this connection in more formal treatments. The scope and range of the book are evident from the table of contents. The topics usually found in books on the calculus but not appearing here are omitted in conformity with the plan of the book as stated in the first paragraph above. An attempt has been made to approach the several parts of the subject as naturally and directly as possible, to show as clearly as possible the unity and continuity of the subject as a whole, to show what the calculus is all about and how it is used, and to present the material in as simple, straightforward and informal a style as it will permit. It is hoped thus that the book will be of the greatest interest and usefulness to the readers mentioned above. The first edition of this book was prepared before the other volumes of the series were written and the arrangement of the material in this volume was not the same as in the others. In this revised edition the arrangement has been changed somewhat so that it is now the same in all the volumes of the series.

Information theory is an exceptional field in many ways. Technically, it is one of the rare fields in which mathematical results and insights have led directly to significant engineering payoffs. Professionally, it is a field that has sustained a remarkable degree of community, collegiality and high standards. James L. Massey, whose work in the field is honored here, embodies the highest standards of the profession in his own career. The book covers the latest work on: block coding, convolutional coding, cryptography, and information theory. The 44 contributions represent a cross-section of the world's leading scholars, scientists and researchers in information theory and communication. The book is rounded off with an index and a bibliography of publications by James Massey.

R1,060 Discovery Miles 10 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

FOUNDATIONS OFMODERN ANALYSISEnlarged and Corrected PrintingJ. DIEUDONNEThis book is the first volume of a treatise which will eventually consist offour volumes. It is also an enlarged and corrected printing, essentiallywithout changes, of my Foundations of Modern Analysis, published in1960. Many readers, colleagues, and friends have urged me to write a sequelto that book, and in the end I became convinced that there was a place fora survey of modern analysis, somewhere between the minimum tool kitof an elementary nature which I had intended to write, and specialistmonographs leading to the frontiers of research. My experience of teachinghas also persuaded me that the mathematical apprentice, after taking the firststep of Foundations, needs further guidance and a kind of general birdseyeview of his subject before he is launched onto the ocean of mathematicalliterature or set on the narrow path of his own topic of research. Thus I have finally been led to attempt to write an equivalent, for themathematicians of 1970, of what the Cours dAnalyse of Jordan, Picard, and Goursat were for mathematical students between 1880 and 1920.It is manifestly out of the question to attempt encyclopedic coverage, andcertainly superfluous to rewrite the works of N. Bourbaki. I have thereforebeen obliged to cut ruthlessly in order to keep within limits comparable tothose of the classical treatises. I have opted for breadth rather than depth, inthe opinion that it is better to show the reader rudiments of many branchesof modern analysis rather than to provide him with a complete and detailedexposition of a small number of topics.Experience seems to show that the student usually finds a new theorydifficult tograsp at a first reading. He needs to return to it several times beforehe becomes really familiar with it and can distinguish for himself whichare the essential ideas and which results are of minor importance, and onlythen will he be able to apply it intelligently. The chapters of this treatise arevi PREFACE TO THE ENLARGED AND CORRECTED PRINTINGtherefore samples rather than complete theories: indeed, I have systematically tried not to be exhaustive. The works quoted in the bibliography willalways enable the reader to go deeper into any particular theory. However, I have refused to distort the main ideas of analysis by presentingthem in too specialized a form, and thereby obscuring their power andgenerality. It gives a false impression, for example, if differential geometryis restricted to two or three dimensions, or if integration is restricted to Lebesgue measure, on the pretext of making these subjects more accessible orintuitive. On the other hand I do not believe that the essential content of the ideasinvolved is lost, in a first study, by restricting attention to separable metrizabletopological spaces. The mathematicians of my own generation were certainlyright to banish, hypotheses of countability wherever they were not needed: thiswas the only way to get a clear understanding.
