Shaping an Inclusive Energy Transition (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Margot P. C. Weijnen, Zofia Lukszo, Samira Farahani Shaping an Inclusive Energy Transition (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Margot P. C. Weijnen, Zofia Lukszo, Samira Farahani
R1,356 Discovery Miles 13 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This open access book makes a case for a socially inclusive energy transition and illustrates how engineering and public policy professionals can contribute to shaping an inclusive energy transition, building on a socio-technical systems engineering approach. Accomplishing a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions economy in 2050 is a daunting challenge. This book explores the challenges of the energy transition from the perspectives of technological innovation, public policy, social values and ethics. It elaborates on two particular gaps in the design of public policy interventions focused on decarbonization of the energy system and discusses how both could be remedied. First, the siloed organization of public administration fails to account for the many interdependencies between the energy sector, the mobility system, digital infrastructure and the built environment. Cross-sector coordination of policies and policy instruments is needed to avoid potentially adverse effects upon society and the economy, which may hamper the energy transition rather than accelerate it. Second, energy and climate policies pay insufficient attention to the social values at stake in the energy transition. In addressing these gaps, this book intends to inspire decision makers engaged in the energy transition to embrace the transition as an opportunity to bring a more inclusive society into being.

Energy Audits - A Workbook for Energy Management in Buildings (Paperback): T Al-Shemmeri Energy Audits - A Workbook for Energy Management in Buildings (Paperback)
T Al-Shemmeri
R1,353 Discovery Miles 13 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Energy efficiency is today a crucial topic in the built environment - for both designers and managers of buildings. This increased interest is driven by a combination of new regulations and directives within the EU and worldwide to combat global warming.

All buildings now must now acquire and display an EPC (energy performance certificate), a rating similar to the A-G rating given to white goods. But in order to understand how to be more efficient in energy use, you need first to understand the mechanisms of both energy requirements and how energy is used in buildings.

"Energy Audits: a workbook for energy management in buildings" tackles the fundamental principles of thermodynamics through day-to-day engineering concepts and helps students understand why energy losses occur and how they can be reduced. It provides the tools to measure process efficiency and sustainability in power and heating applications, helping engineers to recognize why energy losses occur and how they can be reduced utilizing familiar thermodynamic principles.

The author describes the sources of energy available today; explains how energy is used in buildings - and how energy is lost - and how this can be controlled and reduced. Investments in energy efficiency are considered for a number of case studies conducted on real buildings

The book explains the theory; illustrates it with case studies and worked examples; and then tests students' understanding with tutorial problems. This is an invaluable resource for students on engineering and building courses where energy management is now a core topic.

Earth Building - Methods and Materials, Repair and Conservation (Paperback): Laurence Keefe Earth Building - Methods and Materials, Repair and Conservation (Paperback)
Laurence Keefe
R1,945 Discovery Miles 19 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Buildings with load bearing earth walls were once wide spread throughout Britain and many thousands, including some dating from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, still survive. Earth is ultimate form of "green" building construction, creating no environmental pollution and consuming virtually no energy. Subsoil can be dug from on or near the site to construct building that will meet contemporary needs and comply with current building regulations.
This book explains, in fairly simple terms, the engineering properties of earth as a construction material. It describes, evaluates and compares the various methods earth construction and explains the failure mechanisms of mass earth walls and how to identify building defects. It also discusses, in some detail, how mass earth construction can achieve compliance with current building regulations and illustrates appropriate repair methods based upon case studies of actual building failures and major structural repairs.
Professionals such as architects, builders, surveyors and conservation officers should find this a good reference. It is also a methodically presented text for students and an authoritative guide for self-builders.

Energy Futures - Anthropocene Challenges, Emerging Technologies and Everyday Life (Hardcover): Simone Abram, Karen Waltorp,... Energy Futures - Anthropocene Challenges, Emerging Technologies and Everyday Life (Hardcover)
Simone Abram, Karen Waltorp, Nathalie Ortar, Sarah Pink
R2,676 R2,406 Discovery Miles 24 060 Save R270 (10%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Everyday life as we knew it is increasingly challenged in a world of climate, social, health and political crisis. Emerging technologies, data analytics and automation open up new possibilities which have implications for energy generation, storage and energy demand. To support these changes we urgently need to rethink how energy will be sourced, shared and used. Yet existing approaches to this problem, driven by engineering, data analytics and capital, are dangerously conservative and entrenched. Energy Futures critically evaluates this context, and the energy infrastructures, stakeholders, and politics that participate in it, to propose plausible, responsible and ethical modes of encountering possible energy futures. Imagining anthropocene challenges, emerging technologies and everyday life otherwise through empirically grounded studies, opens up possible energy futures. Energy Futures proposes and demonstrates a new critical and interventional futures-oriented energy anthropology. Combining the theories and methods of futures anthropology with the critical expertise and perspectives of energy anthropology creates a powerful mode of engagement, which this book argues is needed to disrupt the dominant narratives about our energy futures. Its contributors collectively reveal and evidence through innovative ethnographic practice how new knowledge about imagined and possible energy futures can be mobilised in engagements with emerging technologies, anthropocene challenges and everyday realities. In doing so it brings together authors, analytical expertise and ethnographic evidence from the global south, north and places in between, generated through innovative methodologies including remote video and comic strip methods and documentary video practice as well as long term fieldwork.

Deep Energy Retrofit-A Guide for Decision Makers (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Alexander Zhivov, Rudiger Lohse Deep Energy Retrofit-A Guide for Decision Makers (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Alexander Zhivov, Rudiger Lohse
R1,345 Discovery Miles 13 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Many governments worldwide are setting more stringent targets for reductions in energy use in government/public buildings. Buildings constructed more than 10 years ago account for a major share of energy used by the building stock. However, the funding and "know-how" (applied knowledge) available for owner-directed energy retrofit projects has not kept pace with new requirements. With typical retrofit projects, reduction of energy use varies between 10 and 20%, while actual executed renovation projects show that energy use reduction can exceed 50%, and can cost-effectively achieve the Passive House standard or even approach net zero-energy status (EBC Annex 61 2017a, Hermelink and Muller 2010; NBI 2014; RICS 2013; Shonder and Nasseri 2015; Miller and Higgins 2015; Emmerich et al. 2011).Building energy efficiency (EE) ranks first in approaches with resource efficiency potential with a total resource benefit of approximately $700 billion until 2030. EE is by far the cheapest way to cut CO2 emissions (McKinsey 2011, IPCC 2007). However, according to an IEA study (IEA 2014a), more than 80% of savings potential in building sector remains untapped. Thus, the share of deployed EE in the building sector is lower than in the Industry, Transport, and Energy generation sectors. Estimates for the deep renovation potentials show: EURO600-900bn investment potential, EURO1000-1300bn savings potential, 70% energy-saving potential, and 90% CO2 reduction potential.
