Melancholy and the Landscape - Locating Sadness, Memory and Reflection in the Landscape (Hardcover): Jacky Bowring Melancholy and the Landscape - Locating Sadness, Memory and Reflection in the Landscape (Hardcover)
Jacky Bowring
R4,868 Discovery Miles 48 680 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Written as an advocacy of melancholy's value as part of landscape experience, this book situates the concept within landscape's aesthetic traditions, and reveals how it is a critical part of ethics and empathy. With a history that extends back to ancient times, melancholy has hovered at the edges of the appreciation of landscape, including the aesthetic exertions of the eighteenth-century. Implicated in the more formal categories of the Sublime and the Picturesque, melancholy captures the subtle condition of beautiful sadness. The book proposes a range of conditions which are conducive to melancholy, and presents examples from each, including: The Void, The Uncanny, Silence, Shadows and Darkness, Aura, Liminality, Fragments, Leavings, Submersion, Weathering and Patina.

Heritage Gardens - Care, Conservation, Management (Hardcover): Sheena MacKellar Goulty Heritage Gardens - Care, Conservation, Management (Hardcover)
Sheena MacKellar Goulty
R4,562 Discovery Miles 45 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Heritage gardens create huge management headaches. How does one preserve a garden designed for the enjoyment of the few when the advent of the many grinds it away to nothing? The answer, as presented in Heritage Gardens is a subterfuge: preserve the illusion of the created environment as originally conceived, but adjust it using more durable materials: plants and designs which require less cultivation. Of all the problems facing the heritage industry today, the managment of gardens and landscape environment create some of the greatest difficulties. This book seeks to provide some of the answers.

Field Sketching and the Experience of Landscape (Hardcover): Janet Swailes Field Sketching and the Experience of Landscape (Hardcover)
Janet Swailes
R6,004 Discovery Miles 60 040 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The act of field sketching allows us to experience the landscape first-hand - rather than reliance upon plans, maps and photographs at a distance, back in the studio. Aimed primarily at landscape architects, Janet Swailes takes the reader on a journey through the art of field sketching, providing guidance and tips to develop skills from those starting out on a design course, to those looking to improve their sketching. Combining techniques from landscape architecture and the craft and sensibilities of arts practice, she invites us to experience sensations directly out in the field to enrich our work: to look closely at the effects of light and weather; understand the lie and shapes of the land through travel and walking; and to consider lines of sight from the inside out as well as outside in. Full colour throughout with examples, checklists and case studies of other sketchers' methods, this is an inspirational book to encourage landscape architects to spend more time in the field and reconnect with the basics of design through drawing practice.

Pietro Porcinai and the Landscape of Modern Italy (Hardcover, New Ed): Marc Treib, Luigi Latini Pietro Porcinai and the Landscape of Modern Italy (Hardcover, New Ed)
Marc Treib, Luigi Latini
R4,588 Discovery Miles 45 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Born in Florence in 1910, Pietro Porcinai grew up on the classic grounds of the Villa Gamberaia in Settignano where his father served as head gardener. Although he studied agriculture in college, Porcinai's true interest lay in the landscape architecture practice he founded in 1938. Early projects centered in the area of Arezzo, whose style reflected modernA ized traditional models. In the postwar era the office flourished, producing modern gardens of remarkable design and use of plants. In these works, Porcinai convincingly demonstrated the affinity between historical architecture and landscapes unA compromisingly modern. During his long and productive career he also consulted on autostrada planning, and designed public parks, memorials, and even a Pinocchio theme park-at times collaborating with noted architects such as Renzo Piano, Carlo Scarpa and Oscar Niemeyer. This book, the first English-language study on Pietro Porcinai provides a comprehensive and richly illustrated overview of his life and remarkable achievements.

Garden and Landscape Practices in Pre-colonial India - Histories from the Deccan (Paperback): Daud Ali, Emma J. Flatt Garden and Landscape Practices in Pre-colonial India - Histories from the Deccan (Paperback)
Daud Ali, Emma J. Flatt
R1,644 Discovery Miles 16 440 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book presents a set of new and innovative essays on landscape and garden culture in precolonial India, with a special focus on the Deccan. Most research to date has concentrated on the comparatively well preserved gardens and built landscapes of the celebrated Mughal empire, giving the impression that they have been lacking in other times and regions. Not only does this volume provide a corrective to such assumptions, it also moves away from traditional art-historical approaches by posing new questions and exploring hitherto neglected source materials. The contributors understand gardens in two related ways: first as real or imagined spaces and manipulated landscapes that are often invested with pronounced semiotic density; and second as congeries of institutions and practices with far-reaching social ramifications for the constitution of elite societies. The essays here present a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of garden culture in precolonial India, and together suggest several new and exciting directions of enquiry for those working in the Deccan, Mughal India, and beyond.

Is Landscape... ? - Essays on the Identity of Landscape (Hardcover): Gareth Doherty, Charles Waldheim Is Landscape... ? - Essays on the Identity of Landscape (Hardcover)
Gareth Doherty, Charles Waldheim
R5,966 Discovery Miles 59 660 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Is Landscape . . . ? surveys multiple and myriad definitions of landscape. Rather than seeking a singular or essential understanding of the term, the collection postulates that landscape might be better read in relation to its cognate terms across expanded disciplinary and professional fields. The publication pursues the potential of multiple provisional working definitions of landscape to both disturb and develop received understandings of landscape architecture. These definitions distinguish between landscape as representational medium, academic discipline, and professional identity. Beginning with an inquiry into the origins of the term itself, Is Landscape . . . .? features essays by a dozen leading voices shaping the contemporary reading of landscape as architecture and beyond.

An Introduction to Landscape and Garden Design (Paperback, 2nd edition): James Blake An Introduction to Landscape and Garden Design (Paperback, 2nd edition)
James Blake
R1,895 Discovery Miles 18 950 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

How do you design a landscape book suitable for its intended uses? How can the natural qualities of a landscape be enhanced with new features and focal points? How can you make pedestrians stay on the footpath? What kind of plant, path or wall should you put where, and what sort of contract should you choose for your client's contractor? This refreshingly down-to-earth introduction to the vast subject of landscape design and construction answers all these questions, guiding new students through the many facets of professional practice and welding together the artistic, legal, financial, environmental and management issues which can seem so dauntingly disconnected. Illustrated with original drawings, photographs, sample plans and facsimiles, including a new colour plate section, this readable classic has been fully revised and updated throughout. It opens with a completely new chapter which explains design and aesthetic principles, explores the history of our relationship to landscape, and shows how design principles can be applied to influence reactions to the finished site. The author then considers different elements of hard landscape and their relative merits in different situations. The soft landscape section includes coverage of the effects of mass and form, natural and abstract planting, and the difficult subject of plant selection. A step-by-step guide through all the stages of managing a project, from initial discussions with clients, site inspection, surveying and quoting, through tendering, contracting, contractual agreements, development from concept design to final plans and drawings, as well as maintenance, now includes the current information on CDM regulations and provides readers with a plain-speaking reference on client management and contractual administration. Added to the guide to drawing and lettering is an extensive section on computer-aided design. A bibliography and list of useful organization are also included.

Field Notes - Walking the Territory (Hardcover): Maxim Peter Griffin Field Notes - Walking the Territory (Hardcover)
Maxim Peter Griffin
R354 Discovery Miles 3 540 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Field Notes is the record of a territory in full colour: a book of words and artworks that capture a year spent on foot in the Lincolnshire landscape. It is about topography and time. Chalk and flint and marsh. The coming and going of the sea, Neolithic farmers and the razzle-dazzle of weary coastal towns. It is as much about the ghost of a mammoth as it is the scream of a jet fighter, heading east. Each image is a still from a film - a film that is under constant production inside Maxim Peter Griffin's skull. Griffin's art is about taking somewhere and looking at it over and over so that with each looking it becomes strange and new. As well as being a testament to the isolated beauty of Lincolnshire itself, Field Notes is an extraordinary account of what it is like to be present in, to fully inhabit, a place.
