Cornelia Hahn Oberlander - Making the Modern Landscape (Hardcover): Susan Herrington Cornelia Hahn Oberlander - Making the Modern Landscape (Hardcover)
Susan Herrington; Foreword by Marc Trieb

Cornelia Hahn Oberlander is one of the most important landscape architects of the twentieth century, yet despite her lasting influence, few outside the field know her name. Her work has been instrumental in the development of the late-twentieth-century design ethic, and her early years working with architectural luminaries such as Louis Kahn and Dan Kiley prepared her to bring a truly modern--and audaciously abstract--sensibility to the landscape design tradition.

"In Cornelia Hahn Oberlander: Making the Modern Landscape, " Susan Herrington draws upon archival research, site analyses, and numerous interviews with Oberlander and her collaborators to offer the first biography of this adventurous and influential landscape architect. Born in 1921, Oberlander fled Nazi Germany at the age of eighteen with her family, going on to become one of the few women to graduate from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design in the late 1940s. For six decades she has practiced socially responsible and ecologically sensitive planning for public landscapes, including the 1970s design of the Robson Square landscape and its adjoining Provincial Law Courts--one of Vancouver's most famous spaces.

Herrington places Oberlander within a larger social and aesthetic context, chronicling both her personal and professional trajectory and her work in New York, Philadelphia, Vancouver, Seattle, Berlin, Toronto, and Montreal.

Oberlander is a progenitor of some of the most significant currents informing landscape architecture today, particularly in the area of ecological focus. In her thorough biography, Herrington draws much-deserved attention to one of the truly important figures in landscape architecture.

Captured Landscape - Architecture and the Enclosed Garden (Paperback, 2nd New edition): Kate Baker Captured Landscape - Architecture and the Enclosed Garden (Paperback, 2nd New edition)

The enclosed garden, or hortus conclusus, is a place where architecture and landscape come together. It has a long and varied history, ranging from the early paradise garden and cloister, the botanic garden and giardini segreto, the kitchen garden and as a stage for social display. The enclosed garden has continued to develop into its many modern forms: the city retreat, the redemptive garden, the deconstructed building. As awareness of climate change becomes increasingly important, the enclosed garden, which can mediate so effectively between interior and exterior, provides opportunities for sustainable design and closer contact with the natural landscape. By its nature it is ambiguous. Is it an outdoor room, or captured landscape; is it architecture or garden? Kate Baker discusses the continuing relevance of the typology of the enclosed garden to contemporary architects by exploring influential historical examples and the concepts they generate, alongside some of the best of contemporary designs - brought to life with vivid photography and detailed drawings - taken primarily from Britain, the Mediterranean, Japan and North and South America. She argues that understanding the potential of the enclosed garden requires us to think of it as both a design and an experience. Captured Landscape provides a broad range of information and design possibilities for students of architectural and landscape design, practising architects, landscape designers and horticulturalists and will also appeal to a wider audience of all those who are interested in garden design. This second edition of Captured Landscape is enriched with new case studies throughout the book. The scope has now been broadened to include an entirely new chapter concerning the urban condition, with detailed discussions on issues of ecology, sustainability, economy of means, well-being and the social pressures of contemporary city life.

The new industry standard on landscape architectural detailing

Detailing for Landscape Architects takes the reader on an educational journey across three major areas of landscape architectural detailing--aesthetics, function, and constructibility--to demonstrate how powerful design patterns can transform thematic ideas into awe-inspiring built realities. Richly illustrated examples accompany concise discussions of a varied blend of landscape design/detailing issues such as water movement, soil environments, articulating structures and construction assemblies, life cycle costing, sustainability, health and safety, and more. This book approaches the subject of detailing in a systematic manner, and provides a balanced framework for design and workmanship that conveys the essence of the built landscape.

Detailing for Landscape Architects shows how details can:

Reinforce design ideas through the continuity and discontinuity of patterns

Actively contribute to the overall form or geometry of the design

Be designed to be durable and flexible while enhancing the entire design

Gracefully accommodate the natural growth and change of plant materials

Anticipate maintenance needs to minimize future disruptions

Maximize their cost effectiveness through understanding their function while designing to meet those functions

Including chapters that apply detail patterns to the design of an urban plaza, a roof deck, and a residence, Detailing for Landscape Architects offers guidance on solving specific technical requirements, while preserving and enhancing the visual qualities that celebrate innovation, and carry forth a timeless quality of building.

Garden Culture of the Twentieth Century (Paperback, New): Leberecht Migge Garden Culture of the Twentieth Century (Paperback, New)
Leberecht Migge
R818 Discovery Miles 8 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Leberecht Migge (1881-1935) was one of the most innovative landscape architects of the early 20th century. With work ranging from large urban parks to housing settlements with allotment gardens, he sought to create functional green spaces that would not only meet the environmental challenges of the industrial metropolis but also improve the social conditions of modern life. The nationalistic rhetoric of 'Garden Culture of the Twentieth Century' marks it as a political tract of the late Kaiserreich, and its deep influence within the Siedlung communities of the Weimar era attests to its lasting cultural impact.

Leipzig is not just a city famous for music and books but also a focal point for painting. This book showcases the latest generation of artists from Leipzig: Martin Kobe (1973), Mirjam Voelker (1977), Robert Seidel (1983) and Titus Schade (1984). They are continuing the great tradition of painting in Leipzig. They all studied at Leipzig's famous art academy, the Hochschule fur Grafik und Buchkunst. Kobe was a master-class student of Arno Rink, while Voelker, Seidel and Schade studied with Neo Rauch. The four artists are united by their virtuosity and the particular attention they pay to landscape and architecture. Text in English, Dutch and German.

This book advocates a fresh approach to planning that anticipates, rather than reacts to, the changes in climate currently in process. Today's spatial planning procedures rely on historical evidence instead of preparing for factors that by definition lie in the future, yet which are relatively uncontroversial: shortages of water, sea level rise and rises in average temperatures being but three examples. Arguing for more flexibility, the contributors view 'complexity' as the key to transforming the way we plan in order to better equip us to face uncertainties about our future environment.

Roadside 'weeds' and other routinely overlooked aspects of urban nature provide a fascinating glimpse into the complex global ecologies and new cultures of nature emerging across the world. This unique collection of essays explores the botanical dimensions of urban space, ranging from scientific efforts to understand the distinctive dynamics of urban flora to the way spontaneous vegetation has inspired artists and writers. The book comprises five thematic sections: histories and taxonomies, botanising the asphalt, the art of urban flora, experiments in non-design, and cartographic imaginations. The essays explore developments in Berlin, London, Lahore, and many other cities, as well as more philosophical reflections on the meaning of urban nature under the putative shift to the Anthropocene.

The different ways of understanding the landscape and the art of gardens by a well-known landscape architect. In the last two decades a new generation of landscape architects has definitively emerged together with a new and more aware clientele that is beginning to see the design of open spaces as an extraordinary environmental and civic resource. "Designing" the landscape in order to transform and develop the environment surrounding us: this is how the architect and landscape designer Patrizia Pozzi sees her work. Illustrated with hundreds of photographs, drawings and plans, this publication presents her recent projects divided into four sections: Energy landscape (eco-sustainability and bio-compatibility), Inhabiting nature (landscape as a source of inspiration and integration), New trends (new dynamics in approaching public space and daily life) and Nursery (sustainability and integration between architecture and open spaces), and leads the reader through an endless series of beautiful landscapes designed with care and natural understanding. What emerges is the philosophy of a person who wants to "get her hands dirty" with a project, developing it in meticulous detail and lending value to the transformation of contemporary landscape from its most poetic aspect, focussing on sustainability and the use of innovative materials. With all its different scales and variations, the landscape is conceived and constructed as an active resource for the future, an authentic and extremely powerful source of renewal for a reality urgently in need of quality and beauty in every place we inhabit.
