Shiwu Li; Translated by Xiao Xiao, Eric Chiang
R3,008 Discovery Miles 30 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides extensive information on craftsmen-built houses in China. Though some inroads have been made in studying this folk custom, this work represents the first comprehensive and systematic monograph. The book examines the topic at the two main levels of "history" and "theory". Combining historical textual research, contemporary textual research, and field study, the book presents systematic information on the folk custom of craftsmen-built houses in China. At the level of theoretical research, it puts forward some original opinions on the major theoretical issues, such as the folk custom of religious belief, the boundary between superstition and religion, and the relationship between oral literature and ritual. The book provides a guide to help readers systematically understand the folk custom of craftsmen-built houses in China. Sharing valuable insights into Chinese architectural history, as well as religious studies, cultural anthropology, and folklore, it will appeal to researchers in the fields of folklore, cultural anthropology, and architecture and can also serve as a popular science book for understanding Chinese architectural culture.

R2,254 Discovery Miles 22 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Only Comprehensive Guide to Brick Specifically for Landscape Architects "Nothing remarkable about a brick, is there? A brick is a brick so far as most people are concerned. And it is not a very beautiful thing, is it? But what you can do with it!" —Frank Lloyd Wright Brick was one of the first manufactured building materials. Today, it continues to be one of the most popular building materials in the world, thanks to its unparalleled versatility, durability, warmth, and aesthetic richness. And nowhere are these attributes more evident than in the designed landscape. Brick in the Landscape gives you the information you need to exploit brick’s full potential in your design work. The first and only complete guide to the properties, use, selection, and installation of brick written from the landscape architect’s perspective, it is destined to become a staple in your practice. Brick in the Landscape provides full, detailed coverage of all relevant technical aspects of brick, including materials and properties, finishes and bonds, classifications and shapes. It also familiarizes you with virtually all known bricklaying and masonry methods and techniques, including numerous all-but-forgotten, yet still viable, techniques. At the same time, Brick in the Landscape is an enduring source of inspiration and ideas. Generously supplemented with more than 100 photographs illustrating various building systems as well as both common and innovative applications of brick in landscape design, it will awaken you to the nearly unlimited potential of brick to enhance your designs. Brick in the Landscape is an indispensable tool for landscape architects, landscape designers, and architects who provide site-planning services.

Leading with Aesthetics - The Transformational Leadership of Charles M. Vest at MIT (Paperback): Mahesh Daas Leading with Aesthetics - The Transformational Leadership of Charles M. Vest at MIT (Paperback)
Mahesh Daas
R985 Discovery Miles 9 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Leading with Aesthetics: The Transformational Leadership of Charles M. Vest at MIT examines the role of aesthetics, design, and architecture in organizational transformation and leadership, particularly in the context of academic institutions. Leadership has been thus far predominantly examined from the perspective of function (performance) and position in the organizational structure (such as a CEO or a president). Relatively little work has been done in studying leadership of academic institutions, let alone from the perspective of aesthetics, both of which this book aims to rectify. Although aesthetic dimension is important in any organizational context, it is particularly important for academic institutions. Leading with aesthetics would empower leaders in any organizational setting. Daas examines the aesthetic dimension of transformational leadership through an eclectic blend of lenses drawn from the fields of architecture, political science, organizational aesthetics, and organizational psychoanalysis. A detailed case study of the leadership of Charles Marstiller Vest (1941-2013), who served as the president of Massachusetts Institute of Technology for fourteen years between 1990 and 2004, illustrates the importance of the aesthetic dimension in leadership and organizational change.

R3,034 Discovery Miles 30 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the importance of freedom and liberalism in the context of socialities, individualities and materialities. The authors provide a highly unusual and innovative blending of concepts about space and landscape through a deeply theoretical exploration of liberalism. Liberalism is often problematized in contemporary discussions with regard to gentrification, environmental problems and inequality. In contrast, this book refers to a liberalism that maximizes life chances in the context of dealing with spaces. A connection between freedom and space, based on liberal ideas, provides a much needed theoretical intervention in the fields of social and spatial sciences.

Landscapes are forged by many forces and are dynamic, not static. Yet most landscape designs are designed as static; that is, they are designed not to change substantially for 20-50 years. As cities become the dominant living space for humans, allowing non-human forces to contribute to our designs as landscape architects will make for more resilient landscapes and a healthier planet. Making these dynamic landscapes with our non-human partners will require a new landscape aesthetic, changing the public perception of "landscape," and changing maintenance practices. Dynamic Geographies seeks to address these perceptions with a series of our projects as examples. The book is divided into three segments of overlapping geographies: Invisible geographies, Layered geographies, and Unleashing geographies.

Gayle Souter-Brown
R1,471 Discovery Miles 14 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this book Gayle Souter-Brown explores the social, economic and environmental benefits of developing greenspace for health and well-being. She examines the evidence behind the positive effects of designed landscapes, and explains effective methods and approaches which can be put into practice by those seeking to reduce costs and add value through outdoor spaces. Using principles from sensory, therapeutic and healing gardens, Souter-Brown focuses on landscape's ability to affect health, education and economic outcomes. Already valued within healthcare environments, these design guidelines for public and private spaces extend the benefits throughout our towns and cities. Covering design for school grounds to public parks, public housing to gardens for stressed executives, this richly illustrated text builds the case to justify inclusion of a designed outdoor area in project budgets. With case studies from the US, UK, Africa, Asia, Australasia and Europe, it is an international, inspirational and valuable tool for those interested in landscapes that provide real benefits to their users.

This book focuses on sustainability concepts in architecture and urban design, environmental issues, and natural resources. Today it has become essential to reduce carbon emissions, protect habitats, and preserve the delicate ecosystems of our planet. Accordingly, sustainable development has to be improved by decreasing the consumption of non-renewable resources, in order to help nature replenish itself. Further, it highlights the efforts that have been made by architects, environmentalists, engineers, students, planners and everyone in between in order to improve sustainability in various developing communities and countries.

Place Making in International Practice of Landscape Architecture - A Study of Australian Practices in China (Paperback, 1st ed.... Place Making in International Practice of Landscape Architecture - A Study of Australian Practices in China (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Yun Zhang
R4,435 Discovery Miles 44 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores international practice in landscape architecture, focusing on the provision of services from Australia to China during China's contemporary urbanization and Australian landscape architects' approaches to place. Landscape architectural practice requires planners and designers to have a deep understanding of local culture, site characteristics, craftsmanship and even project procedures that are often intangible. How to acquire the above local knowledge has become a major challenge for international teams. Through the survey of the practice of Australian landscape practices in China and the case study of Li Lake planning and design project, this book reveals the process and difficulties of landscape planning and design as a transnational practice, as well as its special value as a way of cross-cultural fertilization. This book is intended for students, practitioners and researchers in the fields of landscape architecture, architecture and urban planning.

Emerging from the vivid landscape of California's Central Valley, architect Maria Ogrydziak's iconic, light-filled houses reflect a region where growth abounds, rich soil runs deep, and blue sky goes on and on. She designs for a new California dream, outside the hustle of the big cities, far from the deep turquoise of the Pacific. Framing the Valley follows eight case study houses where everyday people find extraordinary lives through architecture. Written in an approachable style by Maria, it is full of design wisdom from over 40 years of 400 built projects. Projects include Art Barn, a steel horse barn transformed into an art gallery, overlooking picturesque fields dotted with California poppies; Flight house, a budget-friendly remote-work homestead just outside town; two remodels of California's classic ranch-style and mid-century modern tract homes; and a 15,000-square-foot luxury homestead clad completely in iridescent glass.

Learning Country in Landscape Architecture - Indigenous Knowledge Systems, Respect and Appreciation (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021):... Learning Country in Landscape Architecture - Indigenous Knowledge Systems, Respect and Appreciation (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
David S. Jones
R1,660 Discovery Miles 16 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book strategically focuses upon the feasibility of positioning Indigenous Knowledge Systems into tertiary built environment education and research in Australia. Australian tertiary education has little engaged with Indigenous peoples and their Indigenous Knowledge Systems, and the respectful translation of their Indigenous Knowledge Systems into tertiary education learning. In contrast, while there has been a dearth of discussion and research on this topic pertaining to the tertiary sector, the secondary school sector has passionately pursued this topic. There is an uneasiness by the tertiary sector to engage in this realm, overwhelmed already by the imperatives of the Commonwealth's 'Closing the Gap' initiative to advance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tertiary education successes and appointments of Indigenous academics. As a consequence, the teaching of Indigenous Knowledge Systems relevant to professional disciplines, particularly landscape architecture where it is most apt, is overlooked and similarly little addressed in the relevant professional institute education accreditation standards.

Martin Beattie, Christos Kakalis, Matthew Ozga-Lawn
R1,470 Discovery Miles 14 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the shared qualities of mountains as naturally-formed landscapes, and of megastructures as manmade landscapes, seeking to unravel how each can be understood as an open system of complex network relationships (human, natural and artificial). By looking at mountains and megastructures in an interchangeable way, the book negotiates the fixed boundaries of natural and artificial worlds, to suggest a more complex relationship between landscape and architecture. It suggests an ecological understanding of the interconnectedness of architecture and landscape, and an entangled network of relations. Urban, colonialist, fictional, rural and historical landscapes are interwoven into this fabric that also involves discontinuities, tensions and conflicts as parts of a system that is never linear, but rather fluid and organic as driven by human endeavor.

Treating Dissociative Identity Disorder - The Power of the Collective Heart (Hardcover): Sarah Y. Krakauer Treating Dissociative Identity Disorder - The Power of the Collective Heart (Hardcover)
Sarah Y. Krakauer
R3,613 Discovery Miles 36 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is a book about the triumph of inner authority over the debilitating effects of trauma and abuse. In a simple and straightforward style, a three-phase model for treating dissociative identity disorder (previously known as multiple personality disorder) is introduced. The Collective Heart model is consistent with the current standards of care which emphasize caution and restraint. Additionally, the Collective Heart Model has several unique features: it highlights the retrieval of personal authority rather than the retrieval of traumatic memories, identifies the fundamental inner unity underlying the fragmented personality system, and introduces techniques that facilitate communication between personalities and between each personality's conscious mind and the collective heart.
Six chapters of fascinating case vignettes illustrate therapeutic techniques and show how clients tap into their underlying inner unity to create conditions for their own maturation, making it safe for their alters to grow, heal, and eventually join the host as a seamless, harmonious whole.

Critical Landscape Planning during the Belt and Road Initiative (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Ashley Scott Kelly, Xiaoxuan Lu Critical Landscape Planning during the Belt and Road Initiative (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Ashley Scott Kelly, Xiaoxuan Lu
R1,340 Discovery Miles 13 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This open access book traces the development of landscapes along the 414-kilometer China-Laos Railway, one of the first infrastructure projects implemented under China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and which is due for completion at the end of 2021. Written from the perspective of landscape architecture and intended for planners and related professionals engaged in the development and conservation of these landscapes, this book provides history, planning pedagogy and interdisciplinary framing for working alongside the often-opaque planning, design and implementation processes of large-scale infrastructure. It complicates simplistic notions of development and urbanization frequently reproduced in the Laos-China frontier region. Many of the projects and sites investigated in this book are recent "firsts" in Laos: Laos's first wildlife sanctuary for trafficked endangered species, its first botanical garden and its first planting plan for a community forest. Most often the agents and accomplices of neoliberal development, the planning and design professions, including landscape architecture, have little dialogue with either the mainstream natural sciences or critical social sciences that form the discourse of projects in Laos and comparable contexts. Covering diverse conceptions and issues of development, including cultural and scientific knowledge exchanges between Laos and China, nature tourism, connectivity and new town planning, this book also features nine planning proposals for Laos generated through this research initiative since the railway's groundbreaking in 2016. Each proposal promotes a wider "landscape approach" to development and deploys landscape architecture's spatial and ecological acumen to synthesize critical development studies with the planner's capacity, if not naive predilection, to intervene on the ground. Ultimately, this book advocates the cautious engagement of the professionally oriented built-environment disciplines, such as regional planning, civil engineering and landscape architecture, with the landscapes of development institutions and environmental NGOs.

R477 R364 Discovery Miles 3 640 Save R113 (24%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From the stone blade and the fire stick to the latest algorithms of genetic code, we shape our world through the act of design. With its roots in the Renaissance notion disegno, design is the ability not only to make something, but also to conceive of its invention and reflect on its meaning. Whether we valorise it as the democratisation of design or critique it as the perversion of the commodity fetish, designed things are now ubiquitous. Not only things but entire systems must now be designed and objects reconceived and redesigned as mere moments in unfathomably complex ecological flows. The planet itself, and even space beyond, is now presented as a design problem. What does landscape architecture bring to the broader culture of design? What lessons can be learned from other disciplines at the cutting edge of design? What role does design play in a time of transformative technological change? In LA+ Design we move beyond the designed outcome to explore the myths, methods, meanings, and futures of design. Engineer and physicist Adrian Bejan outlines his constructal theory, which predicts natural design and its evolution in engineering, scientific, and social systems. Design researchers Craig Bremner + Paul Rodgers take us through an A Z of design ecology. Architects Lizzie Yarina + Claudia Bode open our eyes to new ways of seeing things through subject-object relations. Jenni Zell explores life as a woman landscape architect through a Kafkaesque lens. Daniel Pittman interviews MoMA's curator of architecture and design, Paola Antonelli. Architect David Salomon explores methods of using data as both fact and fiction. Christopher Marcinkoski interviews Anthony Dunne + Fiona Raby (Dunne + Raby) to discuss how their practice continuously redefines the role of design in society. Thomas Oles challenges stereotypes of landscape architecture s professional identity. Richard Weller discusses the terrarium as the ultimate design experiment. Dane Carlson goes deep into the culture of Nepal s hinterlands to explore new modes and geographies for landscape architecture beyond the first world. Through LA's signage, anthropologist Keith Murphy shows how different groups of people interact with and give meaning to the landscapes they inhabit. Interviewed by Colin Curley, architect Andrés Jaque (Office for Political Innovation) discusses the role of technology and agency of architecture in society today. Game designer Colleen Macklin shows how public space can be redefined and subverted through the agency of play. Javier Arpa interviews urban design guru Winy Maas (MVRDV, The Why Factory) to discuss his views on the future of design and design education. Experimental psychologist Thomas Jacobsen describes current neurological research into the subjectivity of beauty. Landscape architect James Corner talks about the evolution of the profession of landscape architecture in a wide-ranging interview.

The volume is a collection of thoughts, passages, research and projects that regard the emerging question of public space. The square and its evolution takes us, from a place of urban and human relationships to a place of different collective activities in the contemporary city. This analysis can teach one to read not only the design experience and the diffusion of new models, but also the changes in the aesthetic experience of public space, in its socio-urban and architectural implications, and in its relationships between horizontal space (i.e. the square) and vertical space (the building).

R1,711 Discovery Miles 17 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Carmontelle's landmark publication, Garden at Monceau, beautifully reproduced to show the Parisian garden's artistic and cultural importance before the French Revolution. Originally published in 1779, Garden at Monceau is a richly illustrated presentation of the garden Louis Carrogis, known as Carmontelle, designed on the eve of the French Revolution for Louis-Philippe-Joseph d'Orleans, duc de Chartres. With its array of architectural follies intended to surprise and amaze the visitor, the garden was a setting for ancien regime social life. Carmontelle's portrayal of his work in Garden at Monceau therefore serves as an expression of a key moment in the history of European landscape design, garden architecture, and social history. This facsimile edition, with its English-language text and reproductions of the original engravings, is accompanied by essays that interpret the landscape design and examine Carmontelle's larger career as a painter and theater producer.
