Rationales of Ownership - Transactions and Claims to Ownership in Contemporary Papua New Guinea (Hardcover): Lawrence Kalinoe,... Rationales of Ownership - Transactions and Claims to Ownership in Contemporary Papua New Guinea (Hardcover)
Lawrence Kalinoe, James Leach
R1,400 Discovery Miles 14 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What constitutes a resource, and how do people make claims on them? In the context of a burgeoning discourse of property, these are vital questions. Rationales of Ownership offers conceptual clarification in the context of material, intellectual and cultural resources in Papua New Guinea. The volume is a result of a major research project headed by Marilyn Strathern and Eric Hirsch, and brings together contributions from social anthropology and law. The approaches demonstrated, and conclusions reached, build upon recent understandings developed within Melanesian anthropology, but have far wider significance. The first publication sold out in Papua New Guinea due to the relevance of its approach and contents to lawyers and policy makers in that country. It is here made available to a wider readership, particularly those teaching courses on resource development, cultural and intellectual property, contemporary Pacific societies, environmental degradation, and property itself. ADVANCE PRAISE '...a unique contribution to the discipline's voice in contemporary global debates...this volume represents the best of the comparative, ethnographic tradition providing critical insight into difference and similarity on issues that entangle us all in various degrees of responsibility and care. It will be read by anthropologists, policy makers and all academic and non-academic students of what has come to be seen as the test area of the survival of cultural difference.' Marta Roahtynskyj, University of Guelph Lawrence Kalinoe is Professor and Executive Dean in the School of Law, University of Papua New Guinea. James Leach is Research Fellow, King's College and Associate Lecturer, Department of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge.

Culture and Neural Frames of Cognition and Communication (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.): Shihui Han, Ernst Poeppel Culture and Neural Frames of Cognition and Communication (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.)
Shihui Han, Ernst Poeppel
R5,870 Discovery Miles 58 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Cultural neuroscience combines brain imaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging and event-related brain potentials with methods of social and cultural psychology to investigate whether and how cultures influence the neural mechanisms of perception, attention, emotion, social cognition, and other human cognitive processes. The findings of cultural neuroscience studies improve our understanding of the relation between human brain function and sociocultural contexts and help to reframe the "big question" of nature versus nurture. This book is organized so that two chapters provide general views of the relation between biological evolution, cultural evolution and recent cultural neuroscience studies, while other chapters focus on several aspects of human cognition that have been shown to be strongly influenced by sociocultural factors such as self-concept representation, language processes, emotion, time perception, and decision-making. The main goal of this work is to address how thinking actually takes place and how the underlying neural mechanisms are affected by culture and identity.

Land Tenure Security - State-peasant relations in the Amhara Highlands, Ethiopia (Hardcover): Svein Ege Land Tenure Security - State-peasant relations in the Amhara Highlands, Ethiopia (Hardcover)
Svein Ege; Contributions by Harald Aspen, Kjell J. Havnevik, Svein Ege, Yigremew Adal
R2,344 Discovery Miles 23 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An alternative analysis of the impact of the 1975 land reforms on peasant land rights, rural inequality and development in Ethiopia's Amhara highlands; essential reading for those engaged in research and policymaking in peasant studies, land and agriculture. The land issue, as in other parts of Africa, dominates life in Ethiopia, where agriculture accounts for 80 per cent of employment, but despite land reform, progress seems out of reach for many. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in northern Ethiopia from the 1990s onwards, this is a welcome and overdue local analysis of the impact of the land tenure system in the Amhara highlands. Complementing the macro research of international economists, the authors take a detailed look at the impact of the 1975 land reforms for those in North Shawa, Walo and Gojam regions, where the peasantry depend upon the land not only for their homes, but their livelihoods. The land tenure systemis commonly thought to have been settled by land certification following the reforms, but the contributors reveal that rather than this leading to periodic redistribution and tenure insecurity, farmers here had 'conditional' private ownership within the framework of ultimate state control. The book also reveals the importance of social differentiation, with the peasant farm closely linked to household processes. In rural economies such as Ethiopia, the land question remains critical for future development, and the book ends by drawing out the implications of the authors' research for policymakers, governments and societies in the Global South. SVEIN EGE is Associate Professor in African Studies at the Department of Social Anthropology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim. His published works include The Promised Land: The Amhara land redistribution of 1997 (1997).

Passport Island - The Market for Eu Citizenship in Cyprus (Hardcover): Theodoros Rakopoulos Passport Island - The Market for Eu Citizenship in Cyprus (Hardcover)
Theodoros Rakopoulos
R2,310 Discovery Miles 23 100 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book offers a unique insight into the global trend towards the commodification of citizenship. In Cyprus, as well as many other countries, foreign investors can become naturalised citizens for a price. Exploring the fact that there is now a price tag to the national (and therefore EU) passport, the book examines the nature of citizenship alongside the unequal interactions between global political economy and national political communities. The analysis stresses how golden passports rearrange common sensibilities about the principle of political equality through citizenship. The book is a rare ethnography of the transactional relations between Russian investors who wish to acquire the Cypriot passport and their Cypriot 'facilitators', the local professionals who ease the process. The book argues that golden passports are the continuation of offshoring by other means, as now not only capital but capitalists too, 'have no country'. -- .

Culture and the Real - Theorizing Cultural Criticism (Hardcover): Catherine Belsey Culture and the Real - Theorizing Cultural Criticism (Hardcover)
Catherine Belsey
R3,082 Discovery Miles 30 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What makes us the people we are? Culture evidently plays a part, but how large a part? Is culture alone the source of our identities? Some have argued that human nature is the foundation of culture, others that culture is the foundation of human identity. Catherine Belsey now calls for a more nuanced, relational account of what it is to be human, and in doing so puts forward a significant new theory of culture.
"Culture and the Real "explains with Professor Belsey's characteristic lucidity the views of recent theorists, including Jean-Francois Lyotard, Judith Butler and Slavoj Zizek, as well as their debt to the earlier work of Kant and Hegel, in order to take issue with their accounts of what it is to be human. To explore the human, she demonstrates, is to acknowledge the relationship between culture and what we don't know: not the familiar world picture presented to us by culture as 'reality', but the unsayable, or the strange region that lies beyond culture, which Lacan has called 'the real'. Culture, she argues, registers a sense of its own limits in ways more subtle than the theorists allow.
This volume builds on the insights of Belsey's influential "Critical Practice" to provide not only an accessible introduction to contemporary theories of what it is to be human, but a major new contribution to current debates about culture. Taking examples from film and art, fiction and poetry, "Culture and the Real" is essential reading for those studying or working in cultural criticism, within the fields of English, Cultural Studies, Film Studies and Art History.

Saroj N. Arambam Parratt
R3,523 Discovery Miles 35 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The "Cheitharon Kumpapa "is the Court Chronicle of the Kings of Manipur, a small formerly independent state situated on the Indian border with Myanmar. The "Cheitharon Kumpapa "is a court account of the state, which claims to record events from the founding of the ruling dynasty in 33 CE. This dynasty continued until the abolition of the monarchy after the merger of the state with India in 1949. The document is thus probably the oldest chronicle in the region, written on hand made "Meetei" (Manipuri) paper made from tree bark in locally made ink with a quill or a bamboo pen. All in all it comprises more than 3000 leaves. This volume contains a copy of the original text of the "Cheitharon Kumpapa," which is authorized by the Palace and the English translation from the original composed in archaic Manipuri script ("Meetei Mayek"). Explanatory notes and a glossary complement this interesting source of information. Scholars working on East and South Asia willfind this volume enlightening and the text will be useful for those readers engaged in social anthropology, religious history, archaeology, human geography and linguistics.

The Archaeology of Personhood - An Anthropological Approach (Hardcover): Chris Fowler The Archaeology of Personhood - An Anthropological Approach (Hardcover)
Chris Fowler
R4,211 Discovery Miles 42 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Bringing together a wealth of research in social and cultural anthropology, philosophy and related fields, this is the first book to address the contribution that an understanding of personhood can make to our interpretations of the past

Applying an anthropological approach to detailed case studies from European prehistoric archaeology, the book explores the connection between people, animals, objects, their societies and environments and investigates the relationship that jointly produces bodies, persons, communities and artefacts.

The Archaeology of Personhood examines the characteristics that define a person as a category of being, highlights how definitions of personhood are culturally variable and explores how that variation is connected to human uses of material culture.

Changing Life Patterns in Western Industrial Societies, Volume 8 (Hardcover, New): Janet Zollinger Giele, Elke Holst Changing Life Patterns in Western Industrial Societies, Volume 8 (Hardcover, New)
Janet Zollinger Giele, Elke Holst
R2,995 Discovery Miles 29 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Hardly any broad analyses exist to link the vast contemporary change in life patterns both to changes in women's lives (rising employment, declining fertility, and changing use of time) and to changes in men's lives, the gender contract, and the economy, as well as to national social policies. This book shows not only similar trends across countries but also the likely direction of future change, particularly as related to economic growth, gender equity, and the well-being of families and children. The first chapter, an overview by the editors, provides a comprehensive conceptual framework for understanding how the economic, sociological, and cultural changes have produced new individual life patterns. Succeeding chapters cover in Part I the connections between contemporary changes in lives and the changing global economy, the changing welfare state, and the growth of personal choice; in Part II changing time use patterns of men and women; in Part III the institutional factors in employment, child care, law, and family that affect life patterns of both sexes.

Language and Ethnicity in Minority Sociolinguistic Perspective (Paperback): Joshua A. Fishman Language and Ethnicity in Minority Sociolinguistic Perspective (Paperback)
Joshua A. Fishman
R936 Discovery Miles 9 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A selection of Professor Fishman's writings, during the past two decades, on language and ethnicity in minority perspective, this volume concentrates on six major topics: * What is ethnicity and how is it linked to language? * Language maintenance and language shift in ethnocultural perspective * The ethnic dimension in language planning * Language and ethnicity in education: the bilingual minority focus * Elites and rank-and-file: contrasts and contexts * Ethnolinguistic homogeneity and heterogeneity: national and international causes and consequences. Each major topic is prefaced by a specially written introduction, as is the volume as a whole, thereby integrating the material and focusing it on minority group concerns. Joshua Fishman's well-known dedication to worldwide cultural democracy and cultural pluralism, not only as moral imperatives but as empirical assets, shines through all of these selections and unifies them philosophically as well as scientifically.

M. Hamilton
R2,663 Discovery Miles 26 630 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Sociological and related studies of systems of religion tend to be fragmented. This book brings together and assesses a diverse range of substantive sociological, anthropological and social-psychological scholarship dealing with the broad spectrum of religious belief, experience and behaviour from the work of anthropologists on the religions of tribal and pre-industrial peoples to explorations of the origins, development and impact of the great world religions. The book will have particular appeal not only in the fields of sociology, social anthropology, but also religious studies.

The Origins and Nature of Sociality (Hardcover): Robert W. Sussman The Origins and Nature of Sociality (Hardcover)
Robert W. Sussman
R4,232 Discovery Miles 42 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Scientific developments have increasingly been transforming our understanding of the place of human beings in nature. The study of humanity, carried out in a variety of disciplines from anthropology and paleontology to genetics and neurosciences, is shedding new light on the origins and biological bases of human nature and culture. The findings of these relatively new hyphenated sciences have profound implications for the interpretation of human behavior within spiritual life no less than the material culture. This fine compendium serves as a splendid introduction to sociobiology. Sociobiology, now frequently being referred to by many as evolutionary psychology and evolutionary anthropology, first offered a radically selfish and individualist account of human nature. However, later researchers have moved away from such reductionisms, and into a sense of the common good that characterizes many species, and human brings as well. The emergence of discourses on the role of religion in understanding behavior in terms of moral considerations that permit people to live in community contexts has generated a lively examination within the new social sciences on the source of instinct, impulse, intelligence and interest. This compendium is clearly etched in a new and generous vision of human behavior that is at the same time rooted in the best of the current social sciences. "The Origins and Nature of" Sociality comes out of a symposium sponsored by the Program for Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and co-chaired by the editors. The contributors focus on the current status of research on sociality and the evolution of cooperative and altruistic behavior in nonhuman and human primates. They examine questions related to the evolution, cultural viability, and hormonal underpinnings of human sociality in specific detail, and describe patterns of sociality among nonhuman primates that many shed light on human social behavior. "Robert W. Sussman" is professor of anthropology, at Washington University in St. Louis. His work has appeared, among other places, in "The American Journal of Physical Anthropology, Folia Primatology," and Zygon. "Audrey R. Chapman" serves as director of the Science and Human Rights program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, in Washington D.C.

To Be An American - Cultural Pluralism and the Rhetoric of Assimilation (Hardcover): Bill Ong Hing To Be An American - Cultural Pluralism and the Rhetoric of Assimilation (Hardcover)
Bill Ong Hing
R2,859 Discovery Miles 28 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The impetus behind California's Proposition 187 clearly reflects the growing anti-immigrant sentiment in this country. Many Americans regard today's new immigrants as not truly American, as somehow less committed to the ideals on which the country was founded. In clear, precise terms, Bill Ong Hing considers immigration in the context of the global economy, a sluggish national economy, and the hard facts about downsizing. Importantly, he also confronts the emphatic claims of immigrant supporters that immigrants do assimilate, take jobs that native workers don't want, and contribute more to the tax coffers than they take out of the system.

A major contribution of Hing's book is its emphasis on such often-overlooked issues as the competition between immigrants and African Americans, inter-group tension, and ethnic separatism, issues constantly brushed aside both by immigrant rights groups and the anti-immigrant right. Drawing on Hing's work as a lawyer deeply involved in the day-to-day life of his immigrant clients, To Be An American is a unique blend of substantive analysis, policy, and personal experience.

Islam, Nationalism and the West - Issues of Identity in Pakistan (Hardcover): I. Malik Islam, Nationalism and the West - Issues of Identity in Pakistan (Hardcover)
I. Malik
R2,686 Discovery Miles 26 860 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A growing interest in political Islam, also called Islamism, has assumed significant ideological and intellectual dimensions especially in recent years. Rather than viewing it as Islam versus the rest, or tradition against modernity, this volume, without overlooking the tensions, also acknowledges the mutualities. It centres on issues such as the Rushdie affair, conflictive pluralism in South Asia and its linkages with the crucial regional themes like the Kashmir dispute, Iranian revolution, civil war in Afghanicstan and Western public diplomacy.

Images Of Japanese Society Hb (Hardcover, New Ed): Ross Mouer, Yoshio Sugimoto Images Of Japanese Society Hb (Hardcover, New Ed)
Ross Mouer, Yoshio Sugimoto
R6,349 Discovery Miles 63 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The popular image of Japanese society is a steroetypical one - that of a people characterised by a coherent set of thought and behaviour patterns, applying to all Japanese and transcending time. Ross Mouer and Yoshio Sugimoto found this image quite incongruous during their research for this book in Japan. They ask whether this steroetype of the Japanese is not only generated by foreigners but by the Japanese themselves. This is likely to be a controversial book as it does not contribute to the continuing mythologising of Japan and the Japanese. The book examines contemporary images of Japanese society by surveying an extensive sample of popular and academic literature on Japan. After tracing the development of "holistic" theories about the Japanese, commonly referred to as the "group model", attention is focused on the evaluation of that image. Empirical evidence contrary to this model is discussed and methodological lacunae are cited. A "sociology of Japanology" is also presented. In pursuit of other visions of Japanese society, the authors argue that certain aspects of Japanese behaviour can be explained by considering Japanese society as the exact inverse of the portayal provided by the group model. The authors also present a multi-dimensional model of social stratification, arguing that much of the variation in Japanese behaviour can be understood within the framework as having universal equivalence.

Neighbours and Nationals in an African City Ward (Hardcover, Revised edition): David Parkin Neighbours and Nationals in an African City Ward (Hardcover, Revised edition)
David Parkin
R1,679 Discovery Miles 16 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study analyses the way in which tribal ties are maintained in the development of a tribally mixed, middle class community in Kampala, Uganda. Political independence in the early nineteen sixties in much of Africa created expectations of increased development, education and living standards. There was hope that ethnic tensions arising from false colonial boundaries might be transcended by newly emerging socio-economic status-groups. However, the new national boundaries suddenly made aliens of peoples who had migrated and settled in towns distant from their home countries. The interplay of nationality, ethnicity and socio-economic status or class was given a new theatre. Hope was dramatically tempered by nationalist and ethnic conflicts which cut across ethnically mixed, small status groups of neighbours and friends. In Kampala, Uganda, this rapidly unfolding drama resulted in the expulsion of two Kenyan ethnic groups and polarised peoples from northern and southern Uganda. The essentialisation of ethnic and national identity imposed by colonialism was thus taken on in this new situation by the people themselves, with the result that they became 'cultural' starting-points of social and political judgement. Originally published in 1969.

A Distant Light - Scientists and Public Policy (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): H. Ris A Distant Light - Scientists and Public Policy (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
H. Ris; Henry W. Kendall
R1,366 R1,169 Discovery Miles 11 690 Save R197 (14%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A collection of essays by a Nobel Prize Laureate on a wide range of problems facing the world, and the role of scientists in solving them. Kendall was one of a group of physicists who founded the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) and is currently chairman of its board of directors. UCS is today a voice of authority in US government science policy, particularly with regard to environment issues. Together, these essays represent both the successes and failures of science to impact public policy, and offer practical guidelines for involvement in science policy. They are roughly chronological, organised by subject with introductions, beginning with the controversies on nuclear power safety and Three Mile Island, then followed by sections on national security issues, global environmental and resource problems, and radioactive cleanup. Kendall's Nobel Prize lecture is also included (and is the only really technical material in the book), while the photos are from a 1992 exhibition of his work.

The Anthropology of Resource Extraction (Paperback): Robert Jan Pijpers, Lorenzo D'Angelo The Anthropology of Resource Extraction (Paperback)
Robert Jan Pijpers, Lorenzo D'Angelo
R1,165 Discovery Miles 11 650 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book offers an overview of the key debates in the burgeoning anthropological literature on resource extraction. Resources play a crucial role in the contemporary economy and society, are required in the production of a vast range of consumer products and are at the core of geopolitical strategies and environmental concerns for the future of humanity. Scholars have widely debated the economic and sociological aspects of resource management in our societies, offering interesting and useful abstractions. However, anthropologists offer different and fresh perspectives - sometimes complementary and at other times alternative to these abstractions - based on field researches conducted in close contact with those actors (individuals as well as groups and institutions) that manipulate, anticipate, fight for, or resist the extractive processes in many creative ways. Thus, while addressing questions such as: "What characterizes the anthropology of resource extraction?", "What topics in the context of resource extraction have anthropologists studied?", and "What approaches and insights have emerged from this?", this book synthesizes and analyses a range of anthropological debates about the ways in which different actors extract, use, manage, and think about resources. This comprehensive volume will serve as a key reading for scholars and students within the social sciences working on resource extraction and those with an interest in natural resources, environment, capitalism, and globalization. It will also be a useful resource for practitioners within mining and development.
