The Experience of Meaning in Life - Classical Perspectives, Emerging Themes, and Controversies (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Joshua a... The Experience of Meaning in Life - Classical Perspectives, Emerging Themes, and Controversies (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Joshua a Hicks, Clay Routledge
R6,853 Discovery Miles 68 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Though scholars generally agree meaning serves an important function, psychologists understanding of meaning in life has progressed relatively slowly. In fact, compared to other well-being variables (e.g., life satisfaction, optimism, etc.), there have been far fewer studies on meaning in life. Moreover, the vast majority of empirical research examining meaning in life has employed cross-sectional designs, primarily focussing on the correlates of existential meaning. Moreover during the 20th century there was only one published experimental study on meaning in life (Williams, Shore & Grahe, 1998).

However, in the past 5 years or so there has been an increased interest in MIL in the psychological sciences. Over 50 articles have been published during this period (most appearing in top-tier journals such as JPSP, psych science, etc.) As such, the authorsbelieve that this is a great time to put together a collection of essays that will help lay the foundations for future avenues of research on MIL. Each chapter will feature an expert on MIL. While most of these experts will be academic, social, or personality psychologists, the authorswill alsorecruit experts from other areas of the field (e.g., Counseling and Clinical psychology). Each chapter will provide a means for the researcher to review his or her own work. At the same timethe authorswant this to be an opportunity for the researcher to postulate thought proviking ideas that might help future research. At the end of each chaptereach contributor is asked to answer 1 question, What is necessary for the scientific study of meaning in life to succeed?

This edited volume addresses many fundamental questions associated with the experience of meaning in life. Overall, the contents of the book covers a broad spectrum of issues relevant to the scientific study of meaning in life. These issues include conceptual and measurement issues facing the field, antecedents to experiencing and constructing a sense of meaning, as well as outcomes of perceiving life as meaningful.

This collection of essays is essential for any researcher or student studying well-being, meaning in life or other existential issues. Each chapter describes important research programs and raises provocative questions regarding the future of meaning in life in the psychological sciences.

Psychosynthesis Leadership Coaching - A Psychology of Being for a Time of Crisis (Paperback): Aubyn Howard Psychosynthesis Leadership Coaching - A Psychology of Being for a Time of Crisis (Paperback)
Aubyn Howard
R934 Discovery Miles 9 340 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Psychosynthesis Leadership Coaching responds to the call of coaches who want to be able to work with the whole person, with the inner as well as the outer worlds, and not just at rational and behavioural levels but at emotional and spiritual levels as well. Psychosynthesis is unique amongst psychologies in the emphasis it places on self and will at the centre of human psychological functioning. This holistic and integrative psychology provides the foundations for working with leaders in ways that respond to today's emergent crises. Psychosynthesis coaching is an increasingly popular approach that is finding its way into the mainstream as a response to the needs of coaching to engage at depth with emotional content and in the transpersonal realm of meaning, purpose and values. This book introduces psychosynthesis coaching to a wider audience and provides a comprehensive guide to this approach for both coaches and leaders. This book provides the context, models, methods, skills and techniques for coaches to engage with their clients within the larger context of Self and Will, alongside working on inner and outer agendas and goals of any description. For coaches, leaders and organisational practitioners alike, this approach is also about coaching our inner leader - knowing that this work always starts with ourselves.

Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism - Designing and Evaluating Evidence-Based Programs (Paperback): Michael J. Williams Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism - Designing and Evaluating Evidence-Based Programs (Paperback)
Michael J. Williams
R1,234 Discovery Miles 12 340 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This textbook serves as a guide to design and evaluate evidence-based programs intended to prevent or counter violent extremism (P/CVE). The book, equal parts theoretical, methodological and applied, represents the first science-based guide for understanding "what makes hate," and how to design and evaluate programs intended to prevent this. Though designed to serve as a primary course textbook, the work can readily serve as a how-to guide for self-study, given its abundant links to freely available online toolkits and templates. As such, it is designed to inform both students and practitioners alike with respect to the management, design, or evaluation of programs intended to prevent or counter violent extremism. Written by a leading social scientist in the field of P/CVE program evaluation, this book is rich in both scientific rigor and examples from the "real world" of research and evaluation dedicated to P/CVE. This book will be essential reading for students of terrorism, preventing or countering violent extremism, political violence, and deradicalization, and highly recommended for students of criminal justice, criminology, and behavioural psychology.

Affect Imagery Consciousness, Volume II - The Negative Effects (Paperback): Silvan S. Tomkins Affect Imagery Consciousness, Volume II - The Negative Effects (Paperback)
Silvan S. Tomkins
R3,200 Discovery Miles 32 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Tomkins' magnum opus, "Affect, Imagery, Consciousness," was published by Springer Publishing Company in four volumes over 30 years. When Tomkins began writing the book in the 1950's, American psychology was dominated by psychoanalytic and behaviorist theories - neither of which placed much importance on the role of basic emotions in everyday human behavior. Tomkins challenged the status quo by developing - over the span of nearly 2,000 pages -- a theory of consciousness and motivation that placed emotion at the core of the human experience. Because so few psychologists were studying emotion at that time, Tomkins drew liberally from other academic disciplines to help formulate his ideas and support his arguments: evolutionary biology, ethology, cybernetics, literature, philosophy, psychoanalysis, and neurophysiology, among others. In the process, Tomkins practically invented the field of "nonverbal behavior" through close observation of emotional expressions in people, including his own infant son. His work was a brilliantly eccentric pastiche of ideas that adhered to no strict disciplinary or ideological boundaries. In time, however, AIC came to prominence through the research of his disciples, notably Paul Ekman and Carroll Izzard, who went on to become major researchers in the psychology of emotion. Today, Tomkins's book is influential not just in psychology but in philosophy, sociology, communication studies, even in "affective computing."

Springer Publishing Company is pleased to continue to offer this magisterial work in four volumes.

Further Case Studies in Forensic Psychology - Clinical Assessment and Treatment (Paperback): Ruth J. Tully, Jennifer Bamford Further Case Studies in Forensic Psychology - Clinical Assessment and Treatment (Paperback)
Ruth J. Tully, Jennifer Bamford
R1,138 Discovery Miles 11 380 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This unique book offers valuable insights into the often-hidden world of forensic psychological assessment and intervention. It follows on from Case Studies in Forensic Psychology (2019) and presents a range of detailed clinical case studies of adults and young people across secure and community settings. The case studies represent individuals with several different forms of offending histories, such as sexual and violent offending, and various clinical diagnoses including autism and acquired brain injury. Each chapter details the individual's personal background, offending, any relevant psychiatric or psychological diagnoses, and treatments. The chapters end with an intensive discussion on the outcomes for that case, and its wider implications. This book allows the readers to understand the on-ground clinical practice and day-to-day role of a forensic psychologist by demonstrating the work undertaken behind the empirical research and highlighting the complexities to which psychologists need to apply their expertise. It also brings together treatment models and forensic research to establish how theory translates into practice and consider whether it is effective at an individual level. Further Case Studies in Forensic Psychology is key reading for psychologists, clinicians and practitioners at any stage of their career in this rapidly expanding field. It will also be useful for students of forensic psychology and those interested in the real-life work of psychologists in forensic practice.

What Is a Criminal? - Answers From Inside the US Justice System (Paperback): Katherine S. Gaudet What Is a Criminal? - Answers From Inside the US Justice System (Paperback)
Katherine S. Gaudet
R1,226 Discovery Miles 12 260 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Videos from the "What Is a Criminal?" lecture series whatisacriminal.org (the inspiration for the book) will remain freely available, and will be described in the book. These can be used by professors as supplemental multimedia content both for in-class and out-of-class assignments. The Editor has provided an instructors' introduction that suggests classroom uses for the individual essays and chapters. Some of the stories are told scholars, some by people working in the justice system, and some by people who were formally incarcerated. It is very rare to find these three groups participating in a common discussion about the core concept that brings them together. The book's narrative-based, multi-voiced form will not only help students think broadly and deeply about this important topic, but also interest them enough to share the stories with their families and friends, generating ideas and discussions that ripple well beyond the classroom.

Improving the Quality of Life - A Holistic Scientific Strategy (Hardcover, New): Myles I Friedman Improving the Quality of Life - A Holistic Scientific Strategy (Hardcover, New)
Myles I Friedman
R2,768 Discovery Miles 27 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nothing is of greater interest to most people than the quality of their lives. They go to great lengths to improve the quality of their lives and engage a variety of professionals to achieve that goal. Despite this, little has been done to increase understanding of quality of life, the factors that contribute to it, or the means of improving it. Friedman redresses this neglect and enhances our understanding of disability and its treatment.

This book addresses the need, felt by professionals as well as the people they serve, for a better understanding of quality of life and how to improve it. Friedman makes a number of important contributions toward this end. He integrates and summarizes the diverse research on quality-of-life indicators and focuses and defines quality of life as a field of study.

Friedman presents a holistic approach to quality of life. While many have recognized the need for such an approach, it has been given little more than lip service. By redressing the lack of understanding of what quality of life means, the factors that contribute to it, and the means to improve it, he has provided a book that will be of great interest to scholars, researchers, and professionals in a number of areas, from counseling to nursing, and to interested lay people.

Coercive Control and the Criminal Law (Paperback): Cassandra Wiener Coercive Control and the Criminal Law (Paperback)
Cassandra Wiener
R1,231 Discovery Miles 12 310 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book considers how a phenomenon as complex as coercive control can be criminalised. The recognition and ensuing criminalisation of coercive control in the UK and Ireland has been the focus of considerable international attention. It has generated complex questions about the "best" way to criminalise domestic abuse. This work reviews recent domestic abuse criminal law reform in the UK and Ireland. In particular, it defines coercive control and explains why using traditional criminal law approaches to prosecute it does not work. Laws passed in England and Wales versus Scotland represent two different approaches to translating coercive control into a criminal offence. This volume explains how and why the jurisdictions have taken different approaches and examines the advantages and disadvantages of each. As jurisdictions around the world review what steps need to be taken to improve national criminal justice responses to domestic abuse, the question of what works, and why, at the intersection of domestic abuse and the criminal law has never been more important. As such, the book will be a vital resource for lawyers, policy-makers and activists with an interest in domestic abuse law reform.

Lacan and Levi-Strauss or The Return to Freud (1951-1957) (Paperback): Markos Zafiropoulos Lacan and Levi-Strauss or The Return to Freud (1951-1957) (Paperback)
Markos Zafiropoulos
R1,131 Discovery Miles 11 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Lacan and Levi-Strauss are often mentioned together in reviews of French structuralist thought, but what really links their distinct projects? In this important study, the author shows how Lacan's famous 'return to Freud' was only made possible through Lacan's reading of Levi-Strauss. Via a careful and illuminating comparison of the work of the psychoanalyst and that of the anthropologist, Zafiropoulos shows how Lacan's theories of the symbolic function, of the power of language, of the role of the father and even of the unconscious itself owe a major debt to Levi-Strauss. Lacan and Levi-Strauss is much more than an academic study of the relations between these two thinkers: it is also a superb introduction to the work of Lacan, setting out with detail and lucidity the major concepts of his work in the 1950s.

Neuropsychology and Philosophy of Mind in Process - Essays in Honor of Jason W. Brown (Hardcover): Maria Pachalska, Michel Weber Neuropsychology and Philosophy of Mind in Process - Essays in Honor of Jason W. Brown (Hardcover)
Maria Pachalska, Michel Weber
R6,466 Discovery Miles 64 660 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume celebrates the life achievements of Jason W. Brown, who, along with Jean Piaget, Heinz Werner, Alexander Luria and the Wurzburg school, has significantly contributed to the development of a process-based theory of brain/mind capable of challenging the currently fashionable modularist or cybernetic approaches to understanding human thought and feeling. As a paradigm, Brown's microgenetic theory is thus applicable in both brain science (where Brown was inspired by the pioneering work of Schilder and Pick) and the philosophy of mind (where the influence of Bergson, Whitehead, Cassirer, and Merleau-Ponty can be seen). Essays with a range of focus as wide as Brown's expertise have been collected in such diverse areas as neuropsychology (microstructure of action, symptomatology, neuro-rehabilitation, neurolinguistics, locationism), theoretical psychology (consciousness, hypnosis, morphogenesis, personality development, psychoanalysis, Buddhist psychology, mysticism), and philosophy of mind (evolutionary epistemology, emergence/novelty/creativity, subjectivity, will and action, Whiteheadian process philosophy)."
