Statistical Power Analysis explains the key concepts in statistical
power analysis and illustrates their application in both tests of
traditional null hypotheses (that treatments or interventions have
no effect in the population) and in tests of the minimum-effect
hypotheses (that the population effects of treatments or
interventions are so small that they can be safely treated as
unimportant). It provides readers with the tools to understand and
perform power analyses for virtually all the statistical methods
used in the social and behavioral sciences. Brett Myors and Kevin
Murphy apply the latest approaches of power analysis to both null
hypothesis and minimum-effect testing using the same basic unified
model. This book starts with a review of the key concepts that
underly statistical power. It goes on to show how to perform and
interpret power analyses, and the ways to use them to diagnose and
plan research. We discuss the uses of power analysis in correlation
and regression, in the analysis of experimental data, and in
multilevel studies. This edition includes new material and new
power software. The programs used for power analysis in this book
have been re-written in R, a language that is widely used and
freely available. The authors include R codes for all programs, and
we have also provided a web-based app that allows users who are not
comfortable with R to perform a wide range of analyses using any
computer or device that provides access to the web. Statistical
Power Analysis helps readers design studies, diagnose existing
studies, and understand why hypothesis tests come out the way they
do. The fifth edition includes updates to all chapters to
accommodate the most current scholarship, as well as recalculations
of all examples. This book is intended for graduate students and
faculty in the behavioral and social sciences; researchers in other
fields will find the concepts and methods laid out here valuable
and applicable to studies in many domains.

A Constraints-Led Approach to Baseball Coaching presents a new
approach to baseball coaching and practice. Applying a CLA to
player development process across the skill spectrum from the
beginners to elite, this book uses practical examples to
demonstrate the theoretical principles of the Constraints-led
coaching style embedded in research showing the numerous benefits
of the approach. This book incorporates cases studies and examples
of how constraints are manipulated to develop more adaptable
players that can perform at a higher level with a reduced risk of
injury, shifting the reader's view of skill acquisition from the
concept of one "correct" solution, acquired through repetition, to
the ecological dynamics framework focused on variability,
adaptability and self-organization. Individual chapters cover major
topics such as hitting, pitching and fielding for players at range
of levels form little leagues to the pros and illustrating the
underlying principles so that coaches can develop their own
practice activities. A Constraints-Led Approach to Baseball
Coaching is key reading for undergraduate students and practising
sports coaches, physical education teachers and sport scientists

This collection of essays explores laughter, humor, and the comic
from a psychoanalytic perspective. Edited by two leading practicing
psychoanalysts and with original contributions from Lacanian
practitioners and scholars, this cutting-edge volume proposes a
paradigm swerve, a Freudian slip on a banana peel. Psychoanalysis
has long been associated with tragedy and there is a strong warrant
to take up comedy as a more productive model for psychoanalytic
practice and critique. Jokes and the comic have not received nearly
as much consideration as they deserve given the fundamental role
they play in our psychic lives and the way they unite the fields of
aesthetics, literature, and psychoanalysis. Lacan, Psychoanalysis
and Comedy addresses this lack and opens up the discussion.
Linguistic Morphology is a unique collection of cutting-edge
research in the psycholinguistics of morphology, offering a
comprehensive overview of this interdisciplinary field. This book
brings together world-leading experts from linguisics, experimental
psychology and cognitive neuroscience to examine morphology
research from different disciplines. It provides an overview of how
the brain deals with complex words; examining how they are easier
to read, how they affect our brain dynamics and eye movements, how
they mould the acquisition of language and literacy, and how they
inform computational models of the linguistic brain. Chapters
discuss topics ranging from subconscious visual identification to
the high-level processing of sentences, how children make their
first steps with complex words through to how proficient adults
make lexical identification in less than 40 milliseconds. As a
state-of-the-art resource in morphology research, this book will be
highly relevant reading for students and researchers of
linguistics, psychology and cognitive neuroscience. It will also
act as a one-stop shop for experts in the field.

This book offers a thorough and accessible look into the importance
of recovery in both staying healthy and performing well, and
highlights the detrimental effects of underrecovery on physical and
mental health. Internationally renowned experts from psychology,
physiology, sport medicine, health, and sport science offer
interdisciplinary analysis of the effects of underrecovery as well
as the use of applied intervention and prevention strategies. Over
the last few decades, research in sports has provided numerous
studies showing the importance of addressing recovery to find
recovery-stress balance and build resources that help prevent
illness and promote healthy living and well-being. Each chapter of
this volume discusses a specific area of recovery, providing a
collection of useful and practical lessons athletes and
non-athletes can take forward in their training and beyond.
Focusing on both research and applied counseling techniques to
discuss recovery as an underestimated factor in physical and mental
health, the book aims to enlighten readers on ways to incorporate
recovery into their everyday lives to reduce stress and prevent
injury. The book is written for the scientific community, applied
health scientists, students, and interested readers. It draws on
experiences and scientific findings from the field of sport to make
them usable for an expanded understanding of recovery in the field
of health and related areas such as the workplace.

adults, presenting new research, as well as expert insights and
perspectives, into this area. The first chapter presents a study on
personalised cueing to enhance word finding. Cynthia K. Thompson
and her colleagues contribute a chapter describing The Northwestern
Naming Battery and its use in examining for verb and noun deficits
in stroke-induced and primary progressive aphasia. Heather
Harris-Wright and Gilson J. Capilouto examine a multi-level
approach to understanding the maintenance of global coherence in
aphasia. Kathryn M. Yorkston and colleagues provide discussion on
the training of healthcare professionals, and what speech and
language pathology and medical education can learn from one
another. Yorkston also presents a systematic review asking whether
principles of motor learning can enhance retention and transfer of
speech skills. Connie A. Tompkins present a single-participant
experiment examining generalization of a novel treatment for coarse
coding deficit in right hemisphere damage. Finally, Chris Code
returns to the topic of apportioning time for aphasia treatment.
This book was originally published as a special issue of
Aphasiology.
This book explores the basic concept of agency and develops it
further in psychology using it to better understand and explain
psychological processes and behavior. More importantly, this book
seeks to put an emphasis on the role of agency in four distinct
settings: history of psychology, neuroscience, psychology of
religion, and sociocultural theories of co-agency. In Volume 12 of
the Annals of Theoretical Psychology the contributors explore a
number of new ways to look at agency in psychology. This volume
seeks to develop a systematic theory of axioms for agency. It
describes implications for research and practice that are founded
on an understanding of the person as an actor in the world. This
book also has implications for research and practice across
psychology's sub-fields uniting the discipline through an agentic
view of the person
This lively and engaging text introduces readers to the core
interpersonal and organizational skills needed to effectively
collaborate on group projects in the classroom and the workplace.
Group projects are critical in preparing students for the realities
of today's workplace, but many college students despise group
work-often because they have not been prepared with the necessary
skills to effectively collaborate. This guide teaches core
collaboration skills such as active listening, interviewing,
empathy, and conflict resolution. It examines the research and
theory behind these skills, and provides tangible ways to practice
these skills both alone and in groups. This guide can be used a
supplementary text for any courses involving group projects, and
will also be of interest to professionals in communication,
business, and many other fields.

Positive psychology is one of the biggest growth industries in the
discipline of psychology. At the present time, the subfield of
'positive education' seems poised to take the world of education
and teacher training by storm. In this first book-length
philosophical study of positive psychology, Professor Kristjan
Kristjansson subjects positive psychology's recent inroads into
virtue theory and virtue education to sustained conceptual and
moral scrutiny. Professor Kristjansson's interdisciplinary
perspective constructively integrates insights, evidence and
considerations from social science and philosophy in a way that is
easily accessible to the general reader. He offers an extended
critique of positive psychology generally and 'positive education'
in particular, exploring the philosophical assumptions,
underpinnings and implications of these academic trends in detail.
This provocative book will excite anyone interested in cutting-edge
research on positive psychology and on the virtues that lie at the
intersection of psychology, philosophy of mind, moral philosophy,
education, and daily life.
This book explores a new area of psychology of sustainability and
sustainable development with specific focus on organizations, and

Tourism is often viewed as a phenomenon that brings out the worst
in human nature. Self-interest, overuse of resources, injustice and
cultural erosion are but a few examples. This book explores the
contrasting view that tourism can be a pathway to hope and
happiness. The chapters address areas including wellbeing, positive
psychology, hopeful tourism, mindfulness, peace, responsible
tourism and spirituality. The volume examines the role of tourism
in preserving natural wonders and architectural masterpieces,
bringing out the best in tourists and locals and adding economic
value if planned, developed and managed sustainably. It will be a
useful resource for students and researchers in tourism, psychology
and philosophy.
This volume examines the questions of what constitutes a good life
and how one can achieve happiness and well-being, and analyses
different ways in which people can strive for a good life. First,
it presents an overview on important concepts in psychology that
are related to living a good life. Then, a new approach is
introduced: the concept of art-of-living as a holistic way to reach
happiness. Empirical studies are reported involving a questionnaire
for measuring art-of-living, and the validity of the questionnaire
is demonstrated with respect to a wide range of concepts. In
addition, the volume provides results from empirical studies,
showing that, and how, art-of-living and happiness can be enhanced.
Several intervention studies are described in detail, which have
been performed with different groups of subjects, including pupils,
university students and employees. Also, results of interviews are
summarized, which were held with people who had been nominated as
exemplary artists-of-living. The volume concludes with a
description of art-of-living in autobiographies, and presents
suggestions for further research with respect to art-of-living.

volume will be of interest to researchers, academics,
practitioners, and students in the fields of management studies,
research methods, and human resource management.
In his ground-breaking book, Reinventing Communication, Mark
Phillips shows how even the most mature organization can fail to
deliver successful projects - and worse, how this can lead to an
organization's demise. With clear examples, Mark reveals the
underlying principles at work and introduces a revolutionary new
technique for harnessing the power of communication to ensure long
term success. For organizations of all sizes, this book changes the
way we think about management and leadership. Mark makes his case
by looking at teams and individuals that set out to deliver
ambitious achievements in complex and challenging environments. We
meet the leadership team that built the F-18 Super Hornet fighter
jet, one of the US Navy's most successful programs. We discover the
untraditional approach to risk used in building a new terminal at
London's Heathrow airport. We draw lessons on corporate survival
from the cat and mouse fight against IED's in Afghanistan, and are
introduced to a website where online video gamers solved a critical
piece of the AIDS puzzle using their gaming prowess. Reinventing
Communication is about creating the conditions for performance and
attaining long term success. Whether a start-up, a global
enterprise or a government agency, this book shows us how to
deliver ambitious achievements by getting communication right. It
is a book that no manager, leader or innovator should be without.
