Using a method of critical correlation, the author recommends an interaction between clinical psychology and liberal theology which preserves their unique sources, methodologies, and content, while engaging in a mutually enriching dialogue. Though scholars generally agree meaning serves an important function, psychologists understanding of meaning in life has progressed relatively slowly. In fact, compared to other well-being variables (e.g., life satisfaction, optimism, etc.), there have been far fewer studies on meaning in life. Moreover, the vast majority of empirical research examining meaning in life has employed cross-sectional designs, primarily focussing on the correlates of existential meaning. Moreover during the 20th century there was only one published experimental study on meaning in life (Williams, Shore & Grahe, 1998). However, in the past 5 years or so there has been an increased interest in MIL in the psychological sciences. Over 50 articles have been published during this period (most appearing in top-tier journals such as JPSP, psych science, etc.) As such, the authorsbelieve that this is a great time to put together a collection of essays that will help lay the foundations for future avenues of research on MIL. Each chapter will feature an expert on MIL. While most of these experts will be academic, social, or personality psychologists, the authorswill alsorecruit experts from other areas of the field (e.g., Counseling and Clinical psychology). Each chapter will provide a means for the researcher to review his or her own work. At the same timethe authorswant this to be an opportunity for the researcher to postulate thought proviking ideas that might help future research. At the end of each chaptereach contributor is asked to answer 1 question, What is necessary for the scientific study of meaning in life to succeed? This edited volume addresses many fundamental questions associated with the experience of meaning in life. Overall, the contents of the book covers a broad spectrum of issues relevant to the scientific study of meaning in life. Aimed at lay, student, and academic readers alike, this book concerns the imagination and, specifically, imagination in music. It opens with a discussion of the invalidity of the idea of the creative genius and the connected view that ideas originate just in the individual mind. An alternative view of the imaginative process is then presented, that ideas spring from a subconscious dialogue activated by engagement in the world around. Ideas are therefore never just of our own making. This view is supported by evidence from many studies and corresponds with descriptions by artists of their experience of imagining. The third subject is how imaginations can be shared when musicians work with other artists, and the way the constraints imposed by trying to share subconscious imagining result in clearly distinct forms of joint working. The final chapter covers the use of the musical imagination in making meanings from music. The evidence is that music does not communicate meanings directly, and so composers or performers cannot be looked to as authorities on its meaning. Instead, music is commonly heard as analogous to human experience, and listeners who perceive such analogies may then imagine their own meanings from the music.
Nothing is of greater interest to most people than the quality of their lives. They go to great lengths to improve the quality of their lives and engage a variety of professionals to achieve that goal. Despite this, little has been done to increase understanding of quality of life, the factors that contribute to it, or the means of improving it. This book attempts to 'shake up' the current complacency around therapy and 'mental health' behaviours by putting therapy fully into context using Social Contextual Analysis; showing how changes to our social, discursive, and societal environments, rather than changes to an individual's 'mind', will reduce suffering from the 'mental health' behaviours. Guerin challenges many assumptions about both current therapy and psychology, and offers alternative approaches, synthesized from sociology, social anthropology, sociolinguistics, and elsewhere. The book provides a way of addressing the 'mental health' behaviours including actions, talking, thinking, and emotions, by taking people's external life situations into account, and not relying on an imagined 'internal source'.
