Managing Labour Migration in Europe - Ideas, Knowledge and Policy Change (Hardcover): Alex Balch Managing Labour Migration in Europe - Ideas, Knowledge and Policy Change (Hardcover)
Alex Balch
R2,348 Discovery Miles 23 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Labour migration has become one of the hot topics in Europe, especially since 2000 with the shift from restriction to managed migration. This book provides an authoritative account of policy change over labour migration in Europe during this new era of governance. It has important implications for debates about the contemporary governance of labour migration in Europe, and questions about the impact of an emergent EU migration regime in the context of a globalising labour market. The key findings offer a deeper understanding of the linkages between those engaged in policymaking and the kinds of communities that produce usable knowledge. It will therefore be essential reading for academics, practitioners and students of migration and national policy processes in the EU. It will be an invaluable resource for individuals and organisations active in the immigration policy community, including policymakers themselves, but also the wider network of NGOs, think tanks and interest groups. -- .

Regional Planning - Introduction and Explanation (Hardcover): Melville C. Branch Regional Planning - Introduction and Explanation (Hardcover)
Melville C. Branch
R2,058 Discovery Miles 20 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The literature on regional planning deals mainly with the economic development of depressed areas and urban planning. Few works treat regional planning by businesses and fewer still explore its employment by the military. Regional Planning corrects this imbalance by providing a unique introduction to the study of region types and their use for planning and operational purposes. Written in clear, accessible language and utilizing over 70 illustrations, Dr. Branch describes the many types of regions, their use by various fields of study for different purposes, and their utilization by civil governments, businesses, and the military services. In addition, examples of current practices in regional planning are discusses as well as future potential.

Federalism and Regional Policy in Contemporary Russia (Hardcover): Andrey Starodubtsev Federalism and Regional Policy in Contemporary Russia (Hardcover)
Andrey Starodubtsev
R4,629 Discovery Miles 46 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How do Russian leaders balance the need to decentralize governance in a socially and politically complex country with the need to guarantee political control of the state? Since the early 2000s Russian federal authorities have arranged a system of political control on regional elites and their leaders, providing a "police control" of special bodies subordinated by the federal center on policy implementation in the regions. Different mechanisms of fiscal federalism and investment policy have been used to ensure regional elites' loyalty and a politically centralized but administratively decentralized system has been created. Asking clear, direct, and theoretically informed questions about the relationship between federalism, decentralization and authoritarianism, this book explores the political survival of authoritarian leaders, the determinants of policy formulation, and theories of federalism and decentralization, to reach a new understanding of territorial governance in contemporary Russia. As such, it is an important work for students and researchers in Russian studies and regional and federal studies.

Border Governance and the "Unruly" South - Theory and Practice (Hardcover): I. Hussain Border Governance and the "Unruly" South - Theory and Practice (Hardcover)
I. Hussain
R1,816 Discovery Miles 18 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Though 9/11 tightened borders against hard threats, why were soft threats able to create havoc in the cracks? How could these threats become multilateral while policy remedies could not? What is preventing collective action against common threats when unilateral policies continue failing? Consisting of eight border-defying case studies (elite networking, languages, political refugees, diasporic dynamics, drug organizations, migration, and cross-border comparisons), the volume finds the state retreating, multi-centric governance opportunities blooming, and illegal flows breaking borders faster than state policy prescriptions--all explained by turbulence theory (Rosenau 1997) rather than traditional theories (realism and liberalism). The studies explored by the contributors of this volume lead to the conclusion that the state is not, and should not be, the only viable actor in successful border governance.

Never Give an Inch - Fighting for the America I Love (Hardcover): Mike Pompeo Never Give an Inch - Fighting for the America I Love (Hardcover)
Mike Pompeo
R723 R629 Discovery Miles 6 290 Save R94 (13%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Former Secretary of State and CIA Director Mike Pompeo spearheaded the Trump Administration's most significant foreign policy breakthroughs. Now, he reveals how he did it, and how it could happen again. Mike Pompeo is the only person ever to have served as both America's most senior diplomat and the head of its premier espionage agency. As the only four-year national security member of President Trump's Cabinet, he worked to impose crushing pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran, avert a nuclear crisis with North Korea, deliver unmatched support for Israel, and bring peace to the Middle East. Drawing on his commitment to America's founding principles and his Christian faith, his efforts to promote religious freedom around the world were unequaled in American diplomatic history. Most importantly, he led a much-needed generational transformation of America's relationship with China. Blending remarkable and often humorous stories of his interactions with world leaders and unmatched analysis of geopolitics, Never Give an Inch tells of how Pompeo helped the Trump Administration craft the America First approach that upended Washington wisdom-and made him America's enemies' worst nightmare. It is a raw account of what it took to deliver winning outcomes in the face of a progressive activist media, partisan conspiracies, two impeachments and endless investigations, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Complete with a road map of the trends and players shaping the world today, Never Give an Inch is more than a historical review of the Trump Administration's greatest victories. It is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the challenges of the future. And it is an inspirational story of leadership through dangerous times that will leave you with a greater appreciation for America.

Classified - A History of Secrecy in the United States Government (Paperback): David B. Frost Classified - A History of Secrecy in the United States Government (Paperback)
David B. Frost
R1,061 R677 Discovery Miles 6 770 Save R384 (36%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Secrecy historically has been seen as the act of someone who has something sinful to hide. Thomas Jefferson once counseled his young grandson that "when tempted to do anything in secret, ask yourself if you would do it in public. If not, be sure it is wrong." Engaging in secrecy is not always wrong, however, either in our personal lives or in the life of our government. Secrecy has it place. Often it is necessary. When the framers of the Constitution gathered together in the summer of 1787, their deliberations were shrouded in secrecy. The doors to Pennsylvania's State House were locked shut. Armed sentinels stood guard inside and out, and each of the fifty-five delegates was sworn to secrecy by the Convention's presiding officer, George Washington. The American people were allowed no role in the shaping of their country's new national charter, nor were they even allowed to know of the alternatives their representatives were considering. Yet if their deliberations had been open to the public, if strict secrecy had not been enforced, it is far from certain that the Constitution would have been adopted. Indeed, the Constitution's principle architect, James Madison, had little doubt that the secrecy surrounding the Convention's work was necessary "to save both the Convention and the Community from a thousand of erroneous and perhaps mischievous reports. Secrecy in the U.S. Government is not about secrets. It is instead about the role that secrecy has played in American governance for more than 240 years, beginning with the earliest days of the First Continental Congress in 1774, to the president's executive privilege of withholding information from Congress and the American people, to World War II's Manhattan Project, to today's highly complex and often controversial procedures for protecting national security and other sensitive information. It is a story of the tension between the ideal of openness in government and the real world need for secrecy, and the political accommodations that have been made over the years for each.

T. Dyrberg
R1,744 Discovery Miles 17 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Foucault saw the notion of parrhesia (truth-telling) as the most important factor for how governments could and should communicate with their people and vice versa. New Strategies for Public Pay - Rethinking Government Compensation Programs (Hardcover): H Risher New Strategies for Public Pay - Rethinking Government Compensation Programs (Hardcover)
H Risher
R1,257 Discovery Miles 12 570 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The survival and success of public organizations depends on employee satisfaction and motivation to improve performance. New Strategies for Public Pay addresses one of the strongest motivators?compensation. The book outlines proven strategies, many of which are successfully used in private industry, that are also well-suited for government organizations. Specific programs are described and analyzed by experts from government, academia, think tanks, labor unions, and private business, running the gamut from merit pay to competency-based pay to gainsharing.

New Strategies for Public Pay introduces a range of alternative pay systems that show public sector managers how they can:

? Set standards that match the unique needs of individual organizations

? Stimulate desired new behaviors necessary to overcome the fear of change and business as usual mentality

? Energize employees and provide a fresh incentive for continuing improved performance

The decision whether or not to revolutionize pay systems is fundamental. The way compensation is addressed and managed can either hinder or help accomplish an organization's mission. New Strategies for Public Pay offers a useful framework for planning compensation programs that are in line with the times and that will help create more efficient, flexible, and responsive public organizations.

Economic Development in China's Northwest - Entrepreneurship and identity along China's multi-ethnic borderlands... Economic Development in China's Northwest - Entrepreneurship and identity along China's multi-ethnic borderlands (Hardcover)
Joshua Bird
R4,491 Discovery Miles 44 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Under the ethnic affairs management regime established by the People's Republic of China, every Chinese citizen is classified within one of 56 state-recognised 'nationalities'. Government policy assumes that these nationalities differ from one another primarily in their levels of economic development, and asserts that ethnic divisions and identities fade with the gradual achievement of economic and social equality. As a result, economic development policy in minority nationality areas has often constituted a replica of the model which has already proven successful in China's Han-Chinese dominated east. Research conducted across five locations in China's Northwest paints a far more complex picture, however. This book considers for the first time how identity informs the nature of economic participation among ethnic minority entrepreneurs in China's remote Northwest. Through interviews with entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds, including Tibetan, Han and Muslim Chinese, this book highlights how ethnic-and other-identities inform the nature of economic participation. Furthermore, it explores the broader implications of this de-facto economic segregation for China's ongoing social harmony and political stability. Ultimately, this book demonstrates how economic participation, even when successful in achieving its economic outcomes, may actually serve to reinforce and strengthen minority national identity-perhaps even at the expense of national Chinese identity. This book will be useful for students and scholars of Chinese Studies, Ethnic Studies and Economics.

Congressional Communication in the Digital Age (Hardcover): Jocelyn Evans, Jessica M. Hayden Congressional Communication in the Digital Age (Hardcover)
Jocelyn Evans, Jessica M. Hayden
R4,920 Discovery Miles 49 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Communication defines political representation. At the core of the representational relationship lies the interaction between principal and agent; the quality of this relationship is predicated upon the accessibility of effective channels of communication between the constituent and representative. Over the past decade, congressional websites have become the primary way constituents communicate with their members and a prominent place for members to communicate with constituents. Yet, as we move toward the third decade of the 21st century, little work has systematically analyzed this forum as a distinct representational space. In this book, Jocelyn Evans and Jessica Hayden offer a fresh, timely, and mixed-methods approach for understanding how the emergence of virtual offices has changed the representational relationship between constituents and members of Congress. Utilizing strong theoretical foundations, a broad historical perspective, elite interviews, and rich original datasets, Evans and Hayden present evidence that virtual offices operate as a distinct representational space, and they demonstrate that their use has resulted in unprecedented and ill-understood changes in representational behavior. Congressional Communication in the Digital Age contributes to the scholarship on representation theory and its application to the contemporary Congress. It is valuable reading for students and researchers interested in American politics, political communication, and legislative politics.

Parliamentary Democracy - Is There a Perfect Model? (Hardcover): Nicholas Hopkinson Parliamentary Democracy - Is There a Perfect Model? (Hardcover)
Nicholas Hopkinson
R3,326 Discovery Miles 33 260 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This title was first published in 2001. With the collapse of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe, the legitimacy of one-party, and often one-person rule in other parts of the world has been fundamentally challenged. It appears that for the first time parliamentary democracy has become the universally accepted model to adopt or to be perfected. Newer democracies have started to build the institutions and capacity necessary to sustain democracy, while established democracies continue to refine their democracy, sometimes introducing full-scale reforms. This book examines whether elements of the perfect democracy can be identified and how democratic structures and practices can be improved.

The Europeanisation of Whitehall - Uk Central Government and the European Union (Paperback): Simon Bulmer, Martin Burch The Europeanisation of Whitehall - Uk Central Government and the European Union (Paperback)
Simon Bulmer, Martin Burch
R898 Discovery Miles 8 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What has been the impact of the EU on UK central government? This book explores the "Europeanisation" of the work of civil servants and ministers and how they engage with the EU. Drawing on fresh empirical evidence, the volume offers the first comprehensive analysis of the spreading impact of European integration across government. The study is placed in the context of political divisions over the EU but outlines the often neglected way in which the EU has transformed the business of government. It charts the process from the Macmillan government's 1961 application to join the European Communities through to the end of Blair's premiership.

The book examines the character and timing of responses across government, covering the core government departments and also those more recently affected, such as the Ministry of Defence. The authors argue that central government has organized itself efficiently to deal with the demands of EU membership despite the often controversial party political divisions over Europe. However, in placing their findings in comparative context they conclude that the effectiveness of UK governments in the EU has been less striking.

The Record of the National Government (Paperback): Ramsay Muir The Record of the National Government (Paperback)
Ramsay Muir
R1,124 Discovery Miles 11 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The introduction of the National Government in 1931 came about due to the Wall Street Crash leading to a British Government run by members of all parties, more commonly known as a coalition government today. With public opinion split on how to deal with the financial crisis, this was initially seen as a positive step by many, but for many, the national government was not the ideal solution. Ramsay Muir was one such ex-supporter and originally published in 1936, his study aims to provide a timeline of the events happening before, during and after the original national government and how this impacted on British politics. This title will be of interest to students of Politics and Political History.

Public Opinion in Alabama - Looking Beyond the Stereotypes (Hardcover, New): Cal Clark, Don-Terry Veal Public Opinion in Alabama - Looking Beyond the Stereotypes (Hardcover, New)
Cal Clark, Don-Terry Veal
R2,686 Discovery Miles 26 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The attitudes of individual citizens play a central role in a democracy. In the United States today, the two major parties are each associated with a broad set of policy positions representing the conservative and liberal political ideologies. The two major parties are becoming increasingly polarized on these ideologies between conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats. This book provides an in-depth examination of public opinion in a single American state, Alabama, to see whether the public opinion of general citizens follows this stereotype of ideological and partisan polarization. Alabama public opinion is analyzed on a fairly wide range of issues, including the quality of public officials, constitutional reform, the role of government in terms of taxes and overall spending, education, health care, religion in public life, crime, and immigration. Alabama is generally perceived as staunchly conservative politically and as a reliably 'red' Republican state in national elections. Yet, public opinion in Alabama is considerably more nuanced and complex than this stereotype in two distinct aspects. First, Alabamians are certainly conservative on many issues, but they are also liberal on a significant number of others. Second, the issue positions of the state's citizens are shaped by three different dynamics in terms of what factors influence specific attitudes. Furthermore a brief analysis of public opinion in the entire United States finds similar patterns. Thus, the current polarization in party politics does not necessarily reflect public opinion in its entirety, suggesting a need to transcend the competing conservative and liberal orthodoxies.

Immigration the World Over - Statutes, Policies, and Practices (Hardcover): James P. Lynch, Rita J. Simon Immigration the World Over - Statutes, Policies, and Practices (Hardcover)
James P. Lynch, Rita J. Simon
R4,316 Discovery Miles 43 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the opening of borders and the aging of populations in industrialized states immigration takes on new importance. More younger workers are needed to support the social contract established with the baby boom generation, and immigration offers one practical solution. Many countries, however, have little experience with large scale immigration and, especially in the current political and economic climate, a strong resistance to it. Immigration the World Over examines immigration statutes and policies and the societal reactions to immigrants in seven industrialized nations. Comparing the experiences of these nations demonstrates how policies differ and how those policies have facilitated or complicated the accommodation of immigrant populations. Using public opinion data, crime rates, and measures of social integration, the authors go on to show how some countries absorb immigrants to positive effect by addressing worker shortages and enhancing social diversity, while others resist immigration to their detriment.

China's Power and Asian Security (Paperback): Mingjiang Li, Kalyan M. Kemburi China's Power and Asian Security (Paperback)
Mingjiang Li, Kalyan M. Kemburi
R1,618 Discovery Miles 16 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of the most significant factors for contemporary international relations is the growth of China's economic, military, and political power. Indeed, few analysts would dispute the observation that China's power has strongly influenced the structure of the international system, major-power strategic relations, international security, the patterns of trans-border economic activities, and most importantly, the political and security dynamics in Asia in the twenty-first century. This book maps the growth of China's political, economic, and military capabilities and its impact on the security order in Asia over the coming decades. While updating the emerging power dimensions and prevailing discourse, it provides a nuanced analysis of whether the growth of Chinese power is resulting in Beijing becoming more assertive, or even aggressive, in its behavior and pursuit of national interests. It also examines how the key Asian countries perceive and react to the growth of China's power and how US rebalancing would play out in the context of Beijing's political, economic, and military power. China's Power and Asian Security will be of huge interest to student and scholars of Asian politics, Chinese politics, security studies and international security and international relations more generally.

Elections to Open Seats in the U.S. House - Where the Action Is (Hardcover): Ronald Keith Gaddie, Charles S. Bullock Elections to Open Seats in the U.S. House - Where the Action Is (Hardcover)
Ronald Keith Gaddie, Charles S. Bullock
R4,563 Discovery Miles 45 630 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Shifting the focal point from incumbency to open seat competition in the U.S. House of Representatives is the task this book embraces. In the process, the authors demonstrate the importance of candidates and competition, and the role of money, gender, and special elections in determining how open seats get filled and when partisan changes occur.

The Polarized Congress - The Post-Traditional Procedure of Its Current Struggles (Hardcover): Charles Tiefer The Polarized Congress - The Post-Traditional Procedure of Its Current Struggles (Hardcover)
Charles Tiefer
R2,211 Discovery Miles 22 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Polarized Congress: The Post-Traditional Procedure of Its Current Struggles argues that the rise of the polarized Congress means a totally different Congressional procedure, especially after 2007, compared to the accustomed "traditional" one. Polarized Congress explores a host of lesser-known, even sometimes below the radar, aspects of the post-traditional or polarized model. These range from "ping-ponging" of major measures between chambers (without conferencing), to the Senate Majority Leader's new "toolkit". They go from the now-crucial "Hastert Rule" in the House, to the astonishment of legislating the Affordable Care Act by singular procedures including budget reconciliation. The book challenges the easy assumption, especially by the non-specialist press, that Congressional procedure is descending into nothing more than chaotic brutishness or eternal stalemate. Instead, it explains the transformation of the traditional model about "how a bill becomes a law" before 2000, into the new current model in which Congress acts very differently.

Russia's Changing Economic and Political Regimes - The Putin Years and Afterwards (Paperback): Andrey Makarychev, Andre... Russia's Changing Economic and Political Regimes - The Putin Years and Afterwards (Paperback)
Andrey Makarychev, Andre Mommen
R1,793 Discovery Miles 17 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book reveals the interconnection between social, cultural and political protest movements and social and economic changes in a post-communist country like Russia still dominated by bureaucratic rulers and "oligarchs" controlling all basic industries and mining activities. Those interests are also dominating Russia's foreign policy and explain why Russia did not succeed in becoming an integral part of Europe. The latter is, at least, wished by many Russian citizens.

How Power Shapes Energy Transitions in Southeast Asia - A complex governance challenge (Hardcover): Jens Marquardt How Power Shapes Energy Transitions in Southeast Asia - A complex governance challenge (Hardcover)
Jens Marquardt
R4,646 Discovery Miles 46 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An understanding of the role of energy-related governance systems and the conditions required for a shift towards renewables in developing countries is urgently needed in order to tap into the global potential of low-carbon development. Although renewable energy sources have become technically feasible and economically viable, social and political factors continue to persist as the most critical obstacles for their dissemination. How Power Shapes Energy Transitions in Southeast Asia conceptualizes power for the field of sustainable energy governance. Based on empirical findings from the Philippines and Indonesia, the book develops an analytical approach that incorporates power theory into a multi-level governance framework. The book begins with a profound background on renewable energy development around the world and presents major trends in development cooperation. A power-based multi-level governance approach is introduced that is rooted in development thinking. Examining how coordination and power relations shape the development and dissemination of renewable energy technologies, the book also shows how decentralization affects low carbon development in emerging economies. Sparking debate on the ways in which energy transitions can be triggered and sustained in developing countries, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of renewable energy development and environmental politics and governance as well as practitioners in development cooperation.

Contesting the State - Lessons from the Irish Case (Paperback): Maura Adshead, Peadar Kirby, Michelle Millar Contesting the State - Lessons from the Irish Case (Paperback)
Maura Adshead, Peadar Kirby, Michelle Millar; Index compiled by Martin Hargreaves
R764 Discovery Miles 7 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first comprehensive survey of the Irish state, and draws on a range of theoretical approaches to analyse its origins, its evolution, its nature and its role in Ireland's recent economic success. The book begins by outlining the fragmentary way in which the Irish state has been treated to date in the social sciences. Subsequent chapters by distinguished contributors then go on to examine the history of the Irish state from 1922 to 1973, the developmental nature of the Irish state since the 1980s, the Irish state as a partnership state, the gendered nature of the state, the changing nature of the state's autonomy and capacity since independence, whether the Irish state can be described as a competition state, and the activities and policies of the Irish state as a welfare state. The editors examine the lessons learnt from these analyses before detailing a challenging agenda for further research. The book will be of major interest to students of Irish politics and of Ireland's recent economic and social development. Given Ireland's status as a model of success in this globalised era, the book will interest scholars of globalisation and comparative politics, and makes a significant contribution to analyses of the role of the state in this context. -- .
