Lightning Wires - The Telegraph and China's Technological Modernization, 1860-1890 (Hardcover, New): Erik Baark Lightning Wires - The Telegraph and China's Technological Modernization, 1860-1890 (Hardcover, New)
Erik Baark
R2,923 Discovery Miles 29 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Baark examines the transfer of telegraph technology to China in the late nineteenth century. He shows how the initial Chinese rejection of the telegraph as an inconvenient technology contributed to violent conflicts between foreigners and the Chinese, but that this resistence gradually gave way to an assimilation of the telegraph into Chinese society.

The transfer and assimilation of advanced technology has been an important challenge for China's modernization for more than a century. Baark examines some of the dilemmas faced by Chinese modernizers of the "yangwu" (Western affairs) movement from the 1860s to the 1890s. Telegraph technology emerged in the West on the basis of scientific discoveries in electricity in the early nineteenth century, and was greeted with enthusiasm by governments and the public alike.

The Chinese attitudes to the telegraph, however, were informed by entirely different political and cultural priorities. Baark examines the tensions which existed between the Chinese and the foreign companies seeking to extend telegraph technology to East Asian cities, and he shows how the domestic network was shaped by indigenous social and cultural forces. This book will be of considerable interest to historians of modern China, technology, and economic development.

Unbelievable - My Front-Row Seat to the Craziest Campaign in American History (Paperback): Katy Tur Unbelievable - My Front-Row Seat to the Craziest Campaign in American History (Paperback)
Katy Tur
R312 R283 Discovery Miles 2 830 Save R29 (9%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A New York Times Bestseller "Compelling... this book couldn't be more timely." - Jill Abramson, New York Times Book Review Called "disgraceful," "third-rate," and "not nice" by Donald Trump, NBC News correspondent Katy Tur reported on-and took flak from-the most captivating and volatile presidential candidate in American history. Katy Tur lived out of a suitcase for a year and a half, following Trump around the country, powered by packets of peanut butter and kept clean with dry shampoo. She visited forty states with the candidate, made more than 3,800 live television reports, and tried to endure a gazillion loops of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer"-a Trump rally playlist staple. From day 1 to day 500, Tur documented Trump's inconsistencies, fact-checked his falsities, and called him out on his lies. In return, Trump repeatedly singled Tur out. He tried to charm her, intimidate her, and shame her. At one point, he got a crowd so riled up against Tur, Secret Service agents had to walk her to her car. None of it worked. Facts are stubborn. So was Tur. She was part of the first women-led politics team in the history of network news. The Boys on the Bus became the Girls on the Plane. But the circus remained. Through all the long nights, wild scoops, naked chauvinism, dodgy staffers, and fevered debates, no one had a better view than Tur. Unbelievable is her darkly comic, fascinatingly bizarre, and often scary story of how America sent a former reality show host to the White House. It's also the story of what it was like for Tur to be there as it happened, inside a no-rules world where reporters were spat on, demeaned, and discredited. Tur was a foreign correspondent who came home to her most foreign story of all. Unbelievable is a must-read for anyone who still wakes up and wonders, Is this real life? This edition features a new introduction by the author.

#DELETED - Big Tech's Battle to Erase a Movement and Subvert Democracy (Paperback): Allum Bokhari #DELETED - Big Tech's Battle to Erase a Movement and Subvert Democracy (Paperback)
Allum Bokhari
R466 Discovery Miles 4 660 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Journalist Allum Bokhari has spent four years investigating the tech giants that dominate the Internet: Google, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter. He has discovered a dark plot to seize control of the flow of information, and utilize that power to its full extent-to censor, manipulate, and ultimately sway the outcome of democratic elections. His network of whistleblowers inside Google, Facebook and other companies explain how the tech giants now see themselves as "good censors," benevolent commissars controlling the information we receive to "protect" us from "dangerous" speech. They reveal secret methods to covertly manipulate online information without us ever being aware of it, explaining how tech companies can use big data to target undecided voters. They lift the lid on a plot four years in the making-a plot to use the power of technology to stop Donald Trump's re-election.

The Crisis in Telecommunications Carrier Liability - Historical Regulatory Flaws and Recommended Reform (Hardcover, 1999 ed.):... The Crisis in Telecommunications Carrier Liability - Historical Regulatory Flaws and Recommended Reform (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Barbara A. Cherry
R1,677 Discovery Miles 16 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

My curiosity with the economic efficiency and social benefits of provisions used by telecommunications carriers to limit their liability to customers for damages arising from service interruptions and network outages is a longstanding one. It began with the changing state regulatory environments in the late 1980's while representing AT&T as an attorney before numerous state legislatures in the Midwest. As telecommunications carriers faced the ramifications of deregulation, several legal consequences came to the fore. One important consequence was the impact of changing regulatory rules and requirements on the carriers' abilities to continue to limit their liability for damages to customers in a non-tariffed world. As a result, one of my responsibilities while employed by AT&T was to syek legislative relief in some state jurisdictions which would enable the continued use of limited liability provisions notwithstanding other deregulatory developments in the industry. In my capacity as an attorney, I succeeded in this task in the few jurisdictions for which I was given the charge. However, as an economist, these efforts piqued my interest regarding the economic effects of such limited liability provisions on consumer interests. What liability rules for the industry would really better serve general societal interests? As my career evolved, which involved returning to graduate school to pursue my Ph. D. and becoming the Director of Public Policy Studies at Ameritech, I had the opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary research in telecommunications policy issues.

Essential Principles of Communications Law (Hardcover): Donald E Lively Essential Principles of Communications Law (Hardcover)
Donald E Lively
R2,957 Discovery Miles 29 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Rapid changes in communications technology continue to characterize the industry and to necessitate repeated redefinition of the legal structures and issues which must respond to these changes. Donald E. Lively's in-depth study of communications law clarifies its basic concepts and principles. He provides a thorough survey of the press as it was originally perceived by the Constitution and how its profile has changed due to the sophisticated nature of today's media. The book shows how broadcasting, cable, and common carriage disperse a wide range of information--requiring continual monitoring to preserve the balance between responsibility and freedom of the press.

This complex issue is first studied from a broad conceptual perspective that reviews the original constitutional and non-constitutional concerns of the first amendment, followed by an analysis of how the structures of the newspaper, broadcasting, cable and common carrier industries have been regulated, and concludes with a history and evaluation of the guidelines which restrict the quantity and quality of content. The identification of trends in the ownership of twentieth century information sources and the effect of the current decentralization of ownership on the public's access to information are fully examined, and the laW's continually evolving attention to the changing dynamics within the industry evaluated for the present and projected for the future.

From his humble beginnings as a poor country boy to the co-owner of what would someday become the most prestigious book store chain in the country, The Noble Legacy celebrates the life of a true American icon. His first job as a clerk at a small wholesale and retail bookstore ignited his passion for bookselling. Noble's amazing business sense propelled him to continued success, culminating in the establishment of two premier book companies, Barnes & Noble and Noble & Noble. Digital Ageism - How it Operates and Approaches to Tackling it (Hardcover): Andrea Rosales, Mireia Fernandez-Ardevol, Jakob... Digital Ageism - How it Operates and Approaches to Tackling it (Hardcover)
Andrea Rosales, Mireia Fernandez-Ardevol, Jakob Svensson
R4,563 Discovery Miles 45 630 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This anthology contributes to creating awareness on how digital ageism operates in relation to the widely spread symbolic representations of old and young age, the (lack of) representation of diverse older individuals in the design, development, and discourses and in the actual algorithms and datasets. It also shows how individuals and institutions deal with digital ageism in everyday life. In the past decades, digital technologies permeated most aspects of everyday life and became ingrained into human existence. With a focus on how age is represented and experienced in relation to digital technologies leading to digital ageism, digitalisation's reinforcement of spirals of exclusion and loss of autonomy of some collectives is explored, when it could be natural for a great part of society and represent a sort of improvement. The book addresses social science students and scholars interested in everyday digital technologies, society and the power struggles about it, providing insights from different parts of the globe. By using different methods and touching upon different aspects of digital ageism and how it plays out in contemporary connected data societies, this volume will raise awareness, challenge power, initiate discussions and spur further research into this field.

Careers in Creative Industries (Paperback): Chris Mathieu Careers in Creative Industries (Paperback)
Chris Mathieu
R1,557 Discovery Miles 15 570 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book comprises current, original, empirical studies of career-making in theatre, music, film, TV, visual arts, fashion design, and architecture from Asia, Europe, and North America. This format facilitates comparative analysis of central features of career-making within as well as across both specific industries and national contexts. The studies empirically and theoretically analyze issues such as career management, temporality, location, recognition processes, competition, uncertainty, gender, chance-arbitrariness, education-to-work transition, mediators, the 'individualization' of careers, and collaboration partnerships. The book is at the forefront and intersection of contemporary career research and research on work in creative industries / the cultural economy, intertwining both subjective and objective approaches to and dimensions of career. The book moves beyond the dichotomies that have characterized recent career theory and work on creative industries in terms of 'boundarylessness-boundedness' and 'good and bad work' to examine the factors that facilitate and restrict horizontal and vertical mobility, sometimes simultaneously and paradoxically, and the trade-offs involved, and the simultaneous positive and negative dimensions of given phenomena. The chapters also analyze the operation and significance of various formal and informal recognition processes from the macro state level down to minute interpersonal interaction that are central to career-making in creative industries.

Entertainment Science - Data Analytics and Practical Theory for Movies, Games, Books, and Music (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019):... Entertainment Science - Data Analytics and Practical Theory for Movies, Games, Books, and Music (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Thorsten Hennig-Thurau, Mark B Houston
R4,012 Discovery Miles 40 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The entertainment industry has long been dominated by legendary screenwriter William Goldman's "Nobody-Knows-Anything" mantra, which argues that success is the result of managerial intuition and instinct. This book builds the case that combining such intuition with data analytics and rigorous scholarly knowledge provides a source of sustainable competitive advantage - the same recipe for success that is behind the rise of firms such as Netflix and Spotify, but has also fueled Disney's recent success. Unlocking a large repertoire of scientific studies by business scholars and entertainment economists, the authors identify essential factors, mechanisms, and methods that help a new entertainment product succeed. The book thus offers a timely alternative to "Nobody-Knows" decision-making in the digital era: while coupling a good idea with smart data analytics and entertainment theory cannot guarantee a hit, it systematically and substantially increases the probability of success in the entertainment industry. Entertainment Science is poised to inspire fresh new thinking among managers, students of entertainment, and scholars alike. Thorsten Hennig-Thurau and Mark B. Houston - two of our finest scholars in the area of entertainment marketing - have produced a definitive research-based compendium that cuts across various branches of the arts to explain the phenomena that provide consumption experiences to capture the hearts and minds of audiences. Morris B. Holbrook, W. T. Dillard Professor Emeritus of Marketing, Columbia University Entertainment Science is a must-read for everyone working in the entertainment industry today, where the impact of digital and the use of big data can't be ignored anymore. Hennig-Thurau and Houston are the scientific frontrunners of knowledge that the industry urgently needs. Michael Koelmel, media entrepreneur and Honorary Professor of Media Economics at University of Leipzig Entertainment Science's winning combination of creativity, theory, and data analytics offers managers in the creative industries and beyond a novel, compelling, and comprehensive approach to support their decision-making. This ground-breaking book marks the dawn of a new Golden Age of fruitful conversation between entertainment scholars, managers, and artists. You Can't Always Say What You Want - The Paradox of Free Speech (Hardcover): Dennis Baron You Can't Always Say What You Want - The Paradox of Free Speech (Hardcover)
Dennis Baron
R661 R583 Discovery Miles 5 830 Save R78 (12%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The freedom to think what you want and to say what you think has always generated a pushback of regulation and censorship. This raises the thorny question: to what extent does free speech actually endanger speech protection? This book examines today's calls for speech legislation and places it into historical perspective, using fascinating examples from the past 200 years, to explain the historical context of laws regulating speech. Over time, the freedom to speak has grown, the ways in which we communicate have evolved due to technology, and our ideas about speech protection have been challenged as a result. Now more than ever, we are living in a free speech paradox: powerful speakers weaponize their rights in order to silence those less-powerful speakers who oppose them. By understanding how this situation has developed, we can stand up to these threats to the freedom of speech.

Consumer Behavior Models (Paperback, New edition): Hasret Aktas, Goeksel Simsek Consumer Behavior Models (Paperback, New edition)
Hasret Aktas, Goeksel Simsek
R1,287 Discovery Miles 12 870 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The customer was conceptualized as an individual who was surrounded by products and messages and could make a choice between these products and messages, but now the customer can shape the products and messages that are directed to him with engagement by producing content. The customer not only participates in co-production in visible business processes but also through consumption produces identity, image, meaning, value and experience in the marketplace. This book hereby emerged out of the requirement of collecting theories about researching customer and its behaviors which changes with the interaction social media has created, which has a place to stay in relationship within the distances and timelessness created by speed incident to digitalization.

Media Trust in a Digital World - Communication at Crossroads (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Thomas Osburg, Stephanie Heinecke Media Trust in a Digital World - Communication at Crossroads (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Thomas Osburg, Stephanie Heinecke
R2,751 Discovery Miles 27 510 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book examines the shifting role of media trust in a digital world, and critically analyzes how news and stories are created, distributed and consumed. Emphasis is placed on the current challenges and possible solutions to regain trust and restore credibility. The book reveals the role of trust in communication, in society and in media, and subsequently addresses media at the crossroads, as evinced by phenomena like gatekeepers, echo chambers and fake news. The following chapters explore truth and trust in journalism, the role of algorithms and robots in media, and the relation between social media and individual trust. The book then presents case studies highlighting how media creates trust in the contexts of: brands and businesses, politics and non-governmental organizations, science and education. In closing, it discusses the road ahead, with a focus on users, writers, platforms and communication in general, and on media competency, skills and education in particular.

Relaunching Videotex (Hardcover): Harry Bouwman, Mads Christoffersen Relaunching Videotex (Hardcover)
Harry Bouwman, Mads Christoffersen
R2,640 Discovery Miles 26 400 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book presents case studies of the development of videotex in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Sweden, Ireland and the United States. These studies offer an excellent overview of the many factors which might influence the outcome of complex innovation and implementation processes. Videotex is an interlocked innovation comprising not only innovations in the infrastructure (networks, hard- and software) but also an innovation in the supply of services and the user demand. If only one of these elements is absent the entire chain breaks down and the innovation process is hampered. In Europe two different implementation strategies can be distinguished: the Prestel and the Teletel scenarios. Until now, only Teletel has proved successful and only in one country: France. Given this state of affairs the following question is raised - will the relaunch of videotex succeed in countries where the initial Prestel strategy failed? Or will an open market approach, as followed in the United States, present a more direct route to the successful relaunch of videotex in the 1990's. This collection presents a coherent up-to-date survey and analysis of videotex systems operating throughout Europe. It analyses the use, success, limitations and future of videotex systems and related technologies. The collection will be of interest to computer, information and communication scientists, especially those who work in telecommunication and information management. It also offers case study of information technology policy analysis and as such should be of interest to social and political scientists specialising in technological policy.

Austin Conover
R1,084 Discovery Miles 10 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Roaming Around" was Austin Conover's column in the Hollywood Citizen-News and roam he did. He covered the movie capital during the "nightmare years" when Communist infiltration was suspect in the film industry. As foreign correspondent he was present during the first CIA incited revolt in Guatemala. He roamed to Israel in search of the Dead Sea Scrolls, to Outer Mongolia during the clash that broke the Communist monolith, to South Viet Nam for updates on the war and to the USSR for glimpses of life behind the Iron Curtain. In the course of 32 years, he interviewed five U.S Presidents, the general who led the first air raid on Tokyo, a chancellor of West Germany who defied Hitler and the first Prime Minister of India. Also included are noteworthy stories about actors, educators, novelists and scientists, as well as blacklisted Communist Party members and one idealist who served with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War. His "Campground Russia" series, in which he reported a trek across Russia with his family, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. At the heart of this book is a love story: for almost 65 years, he shared these adventures with his beloved Cathy.
