This book addresses endemic issues of racism in news media at what is a critical moment in time, as journalists around the world speak out en masse against the prejudice and inequality in the industry. As the political and economic face of Greece and Europe changes, the Greek media has been thrown into anarchy. Greece today is at a critical stage of transition from a traditional, developing nation to a more western-oriented, modern society. The media have mirrored Greece's struggle, and as important tools of political, socioeconomic, and cultural power, they have been at the forefront of the national crisis. In this examination of Greek press, radio and television, Zaharopoulos and Paraschos describe media which have been tremendously politicized, partisan, and dominated by foreign programming. As the political and economic face of Greece and Europe changes, the Greek media have been thrown into anarchy. Zaharopoulos and Paraschos trace the development of the media under different political regimes which have shaped its norms and structures. Historically, governments ranging from military juntas to democratically elected ones, have all been reluctant to share the use of the print media, radio and television, although opposition parties have been successful in loosening the now crumbling government monopoly. The traditionally powerful elements of society have benefitted most from radio and television ownership which, the authors say, will ultimately benefit Greek society as a whole. The authors discuss the Greek mass media's transformation from state control to privatization as a foreshadowing model of Eastern European media developments. This book explores the roles cultural intermediaries play in East Asian cinema. Based on extensive original research, and viewing cinema from the social science perspective which emphasizes the social processes entailed in the cultural production, circulation, and consumption of films and the social relations they involve, rather than studying films as texts, the book examines issues such as the differences between individual and collective intermediaries, the diverse resources and services that they mediate, their social background and targeted audiences, and the political implications of their work. One important conclusion is that cultural intermediaries have been central to creating the whole "idea" of East Asian cinema.
The industrialization of information resources has been a growing trend across the world in recent years, especially in China, where the information resource industry has expanded exponentially for more than a decade. While analyzing the development conditions of China's information resource industry, this book clearly defines the implications and strategic value of the industry, summarizes basic information resource industry theories, and clarifies the history of its development and special regional characteristics within the Chinese context. Drawing on the statistics and measurement of various economic indicators of the information resource industry, the authors propose four stages of development: a germination period, an initial development period, a subsequent rapid development period, and lastly, a steady development period. At the same time, the book draws upon various theoretical models such as the "Dynamic Resource Triangle" model, the "Information Resource Industrial Symbiosis" model, the value chain model, and the explanation model of information consumption in order to shed light on the information resource industry's elements and the optimization of its management.
