Becoming Human - A Servant of the Map (Hardcover): Michael McEwen Randall Becoming Human - A Servant of the Map (Hardcover)
Michael McEwen Randall
R421 Discovery Miles 4 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

You might not think digging at a 6,500-year-old bison kill site can teach you much about life, but Michael McEwen Randall begs to differ.

At age fifty-three, Randall found new life at midlife as he made the transition from successful Seattle businessman to Northern Plains-based writer. Through a series of inspiring, true events, he discovered how to become more human and learned how to reshape his existence as "a servant of the map."

"Becoming Human" includes more than fifty vivid essays and profiles of people and experiences Randall has encountered on his journey. Search for the past at an archeological dig at the site of a buffalo kill in South Dakota. Take a voyage on a tramp steamer in Southeast Asia and encounter an adventure like no other. Meet a group of Dakota (Sioux) grandmothers bent on saving their young people from America's dominant culture. Walk in the shoes of a police officer and see a great city's underbelly.

Randall's unique voice links contemporary life to history, philosophy, and faith, engagingly demonstrating how these issues impact us all today. "Becoming Human" offers a deep, compassionate view of American life.

Political Censorship of the Arts and the Press in Nineteenth-Century (Hardcover): Robert Justin Goldstein Political Censorship of the Arts and the Press in Nineteenth-Century (Hardcover)
Robert Justin Goldstein
R4,236 Discovery Miles 42 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Political Censorship of the Arts and the Press in Nineteenth-Century Europe presents a comprehensive account of the attempts by authorities throughout Europe to stifle the growth of political opposition during the nineteenth-century by censoring newspapers, books, caricatures, plays, operas and film. Appeals for democracy and social reform were especially suspect to the authorities, so in Russia cookbooks which refered to 'free air' in ovens were censored as subversive, while in England in 1829 the censor struck from a play the remark that 'honest men at court don't take up much room'. While nineteenth-century European political censorship blocked the open circulation of much opposition writing and art, it never succeeded entirely in its aim since writers, artists and 'consumers' often evaded the censors by clandestine circulation of forbidden material and by the widely practised skill of 'reading between the lines'.

Inside Family Viewing (Routledge Revivals) - Ethnographic Research on Television's Audiences (Paperback): James Lull Inside Family Viewing (Routledge Revivals) - Ethnographic Research on Television's Audiences (Paperback)
James Lull
R1,414 Discovery Miles 14 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1990, this title presents a rich account of how television intersects with family life in American and other world cultures. This title will be of interest not only to those in media and communications, but also to those in the broader fields of cultural anthropology and sociology.

The Routledge Companion to Media and Class (Paperback): Erika Polson, Radhika Gajjala, Lynn Schofield Clark The Routledge Companion to Media and Class (Paperback)
Erika Polson, Radhika Gajjala, Lynn Schofield Clark
R1,311 Discovery Miles 13 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This companion brings together scholars working at the intersection of media and class, with a focus on how understandings of class are changing in contemporary global media contexts. From the memes of and about working-class supporters of billionaire "populists", to well-publicized and critiqued philanthropic efforts to bring communication technologies into developing country contexts, to the behind-the-scenes work of migrant tech workers, class is undergoing change both in and through media. Diverse and thoughtfully curated contributions unpack how media industries, digital technologies, everyday media practices-and media studies itself-feed into and comment upon broader, interdisciplinary discussions. They cover a wide range of topics, such as economic inequality, workplace stratification, the sharing economy, democracy and journalism, globalization, and mobility/migration. Outward-looking, intersectional, and highly contemporary, The Routledge Companion to Media and Class is a must-read for students and researchers interested in the intersections between media, class, sociology, technology, and a changing world.

An Introduction to Global Media for the Twenty-First Century (Hardcover): Ole J. Mjos An Introduction to Global Media for the Twenty-First Century (Hardcover)
Ole J. Mjos
R2,792 Discovery Miles 27 920 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

An Introduction to Global Media for the Twenty-First Century provides a thorough introduction to the field of global media today. The book presents the key changes taking place as the global media landscape evolves, and the main theories of the field, that explain these developments. Tracing, first, the formative development of an international and global media landscape throughout the 20th century from the telegraph, television and film export, and transnational television to the Internet, the book then focuses on developments in the 21st century. This includes: the digitization of the global media and communications sector; the popularization of the Internet and digital infrastructure such as the smartphone and platforms; the emergence of global online media and services; the production and distribution of digital media content; and the exploitation of user data. Case studies illustrate key developments throughout the book. The book shows how the field is characterized by a continuity of critical concerns in relation to power, influence, and domination; media user empowerment and exploitation; and social and sustainable development and democratic conditions, as well as geopolitical shifts, in a global context.

Media Management - Strategy, Business Models and Case Studies (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2020): Bernd W. Wirtz Media Management - Strategy, Business Models and Case Studies (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2020)
Bernd W. Wirtz
R3,953 Discovery Miles 39 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Digitalization significantly changes the media. To cope with this change and to exploit new market opportunities is a major challenge for media corporations. Bernd Wirtz provides a valuable guideline for this new world, combining theory, facts, and practice." Dr. Hubert Burda, German publisher and Managing Corporate Partner of Hubert Burda Media Holding KG "The media business is subject to substantial change while differences between distinctive media areas are fading away. This is due to technical innovation in areas like transmittance of content, bearer of content and recording devices but also due to new formats, trends and constant change of consumer behavior." The textbook "Media and Internet Management" stays abreast of changes and covers this topic on a well-founded and comprehensive basis. It makes a valuable contribution to theory and practice in media management and is highly recommendable to media managers." Christoph Mohn, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Bertelsmann AG "The world of media is full of challenges and dynamic conditions for its field. The dynamic of this market is accelerated even more by new digital technologies and ongoing globalization. This book is an absolute "must have" for everyone who wants to know more about the basics, conditions and requirements of modern media management. The analytical clearness and structure make this publication highly relevant for students, but also for managers." Urs Rohner, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Credit Suisse Group AG "Media Management is a textbook, but a very welcome newcomer for students and teachers as it fills a market gap for good educational material in this rapidly evolving field. It is concise, simple (but not simplistic), and contains a contemporary overview of concepts and tools for media managers. " Prof. Dr. Bozena I. Mierzejewska, Editor of The International Journal on Media Management, Fordham University, New York "Summed up, with his second edition Wirtz managed to strengthen the outstanding position of his publication "Media Management". His textbook shines because of its content, analytical clearness and the high relevance for business practice without losing its academic background. With the second edition this book has established its position in the field of media business as the leading standard reference book in Germany. It is suitable for business students, lectures as well as managers who can gain magnificent information from it." Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Fritz, Director of the Institute of Marketing, Braunschweig University of Technology, Germany; Honorary Professor at the Institute of Business Administration, University of Vienna, Austria.

Videogames and Agency (Paperback): Bettina Bodi Videogames and Agency (Paperback)
Bettina Bodi
R1,073 Discovery Miles 10 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Videogames and Agency explores the trend in videogames and their marketing to offer a player higher volumes, or even more distinct kinds, of player freedom. The book offers a new conceptual framework that helps us understand how this freedom to act is discussed by designers, and how that in turn reflects in their design principles. What can we learn from existing theories around agency? How do paratextual materials reflect design intention with regards to what the player can and cannot do in a videogame? How does game design shape the possibility space for player action? Through these questions and selected case studies that include AAA and independent games alike, the book presents a unique approach to studying agency that combines game design, game studies, and game developer discourse. By doing so, the book examines what discourses around player action, as well as a game's design can reveal about the nature of agency and videogame aesthetics. This book will appeal to readers specifically interested in videogames, such as game studies scholars or game designers, but also to media studies students and media and screen studies scholars less familiar with digital games.

Designing the Music Business - Design Culture, Music Video and Virtual Reality (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Guy Morrow Designing the Music Business - Design Culture, Music Video and Virtual Reality (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Guy Morrow
R3,276 Discovery Miles 32 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book addresses the neglect of visual creativities and content, and how these are commercialised in the music industries. While musical and visual creativities drive growth, there is a lack of literature relating to the visual side of the music business, which is significant given that the production of meaning and value within this business occurs across a number of textual sites. Popular music is a multimedia, discursive, fluid, and expansive cultural form that, in addition to the music itself, includes album covers; gig and tour posters; music videos; set, stage, and lighting designs; live concert footage; websites; virtual reality/augmented reality technologies; merchandise designs; and other forms of visual content. As a result, it has become impossible to understand the meaning and value of music without considering its relation to these visual components and to the interrelationships between them. Using design culture theory, participant observation, interviews, case studies, and a visual methodology to explore the topic, this research-based book is a valuable study aid for undergraduate and postgraduate students of subjects including the music business, design, arts management, creative and cultural industries studies, business and management studies, and media and communications.

Media Ethics - A Philosophical Approach (Hardcover, New): Matthew Kieran Media Ethics - A Philosophical Approach (Hardcover, New)
Matthew Kieran
R2,679 Discovery Miles 26 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From attempting to inform us about current events to entertaining us with imagined worlds, the media has a primary influence upon how we conceive the world, ourselves, and others. Consequently, the moral complexities, dilemmas, and duties that arise in relation to journalism and the media are difficult to negotiate. Critically developing a philosophical approach to conceptualizing the aim of journalism; the nature of good, impartial reporting; and moral restrictions concerning lies, deceit, violence, and censorship, this book argues for substantive positions concerning what we should, rationally, hold as the moral rights and duties of journalists and the media.

It analyzes the growth of the current mobile technologies and mobile gaming not as separate but as continuous developments in tandem with the digital economy. It is of interest to both academics and a broader readership from the business, government, and information technology sectors

Niche News - The Politics of News Choice (Hardcover, New): Natalie Jomini Stroud Niche News - The Politics of News Choice (Hardcover, New)
Natalie Jomini Stroud
R1,880 Discovery Miles 18 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Fox News, MSNBC, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Rush Limbaugh Show, National Public Radio - a list of available political media sources could continue without any apparent end. This book investigates how people navigate these choices. It asks whether people are using media sources that express political views matching their own, a behavior known as partisan selective exposure. By looking at newspaper, cable news, news magazine, talk radio, and political website use, this book offers the most comprehensive look to-date at the extent to which partisanship influences our media selections. Using data from numerous surveys and experiments, the results provide broad evidence about the connection between partisanship and news choices. This book also examines who seeks out likeminded media and why they do it. Perceptions of partisan biases in the media vary - sources that seem quite biased to some don't seem so biased to others. These perceptual differences provide insight into why some people select politically likeminded media - a phenomenon that is democratically consequential. On one hand, citizens may become increasingly divided from using media that coheres with their political beliefs. In this way, partisan selective exposure may result in a more fragmented and polarized public. On the other hand, partisan selective exposure may encourage participation and understanding. Likeminded partisan information may inspire citizens to participate in politics and help them to organize their political thinking. But, ultimately, the partisan use of niche news has some troubling effects. It is vital that we think carefully about the implications both for the conduct of media research and, more broadly, for the progress of democracy.

Randall L. Carlson
R2,771 Discovery Miles 27 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cable companies are allying with long distance telephone and entertainment companies, telephone companies are allying with equipment suppliers and entertainment companies, multi-media companies are allying with everyone from museums to studios and travel agents. His conclusions offer an insight for anyone interested in the Information Superhighway, strategic alliances and the implications of multimedia technologies.

The Economics of Mobile Telecommunications (Hardcover, New): Harald Gruber The Economics of Mobile Telecommunications (Hardcover, New)
Harald Gruber
R2,416 Discovery Miles 24 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The mobile telecommunications industry is one of the most rapidly growing sectors around the world. This book offers a comprehensive economic analysis of the main determinants of growth in the industry. Harald Gruber demonstrates the importance of competitive entry and the setting of technological standards, both of which play a central role in their contribution to the fast diffusion of technology. Detailed country studies provide empirical evidence for the development of the main themes: the diffusion of mobile telecommunications services, the pricing policies in network industries, the role of entry barriers such as radio spectrum and spectrum allocation procedures. This research-based survey will appeal to a wide range of applied industrial economists within universities, government and the industry itself.

Psychology and Law in a Changing World - New Trends in Theory, Practice and Research (Paperback): Lara Bagnoli, Giovanni B.... Psychology and Law in a Changing World - New Trends in Theory, Practice and Research (Paperback)
Lara Bagnoli, Giovanni B. Traverso
R1,308 Discovery Miles 13 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Criminal psychology, and its relationship to the practice of law, has become a topic of major significance over the last three decades. Psychologists play a key role in modern criminal investigation and are central to crime reduction measures such as offender profiling, delinquency prevention and tackling fear of crime. Contributors from North America, Europe and Australia examine this link, both adding to and drawing upon the pool of recent theory construction and empirical work in the following areas: * causes and prevention of offending * studies of crime and offenders * the victim's perspective * witnesses and testimony * studies of legal processes. These issues are studied from a 'local' perspective that recognises not only the need for cross-national comparative research, but also the generation of a corpus of scientific knowledge more representative of the complexity of criminal and legal investigation today.

The European Union and the Regulation of Media Markets (Paperback): Alison Harcourt The European Union and the Regulation of Media Markets (Paperback)
Alison Harcourt
R607 Discovery Miles 6 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

National broadcasting and press regulation is undergoing a process of convergence in Europe. This book, newly available in paperback, explains how this process has been shaped by the actions of the European Union (EU) institutions. Alison Harcourt observes that whilst communications is one of the EU's most successful policy areas, European decision-making is eroding the national capacity to regulate for the public interest. European-level efforts to protect public interest goals have been constrained by the European Treaties. The author argues that increased European coordination in public interest regulation could be more conducive to growth and competitiveness than the dismantling of existing national laws. This, however, would require changes to the political composition of the European Union. This book assesses the potential EU media regulation provides for market growth and the protection of media pluralism, the citizen and ultimately democracy itself. These opportunities are presented in the coming decade with the developing European Constitution, EU enlargement, and the implementation and revision of European regulation. -- .

Communications Deregulation and FCC Reform: Finishing the Job (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): Jeffrey A. Eisenach, Randolph J. May Communications Deregulation and FCC Reform: Finishing the Job (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
Jeffrey A. Eisenach, Randolph J. May
R2,929 Discovery Miles 29 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Communications markets have made much progress towards competition and deregulation in recent years. However, it is increasingly clear, in the age of the Internet and the digital revolution, that much more needs to be done, and that new approaches, both at the Federal Communications Commission and in Congress, will be required to complete the task. In this volume, the Progress and Freedom Foundation presents nine papers by communications policy experts and government policymakers that show how to finish the job of deregulating communications markets and reforming the FCC. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 was a landmark piece of legislation for an industry moving from a monopoly orientation towards competition, but additional steps are needed to complete the process of implementing the pro-competitive, deregulatory vision of the act. Bringing together a group of the caliber represented in this book makes possible the best recommendations about the exact nature of those necessary changes. In this volume, the most difficult and politically-charged hot-button issues involving local and long distance competition, universal service, spectrum allocation, program content regulation, and the public interest doctrine are confronted head-on. As importantly, the authors recommend specific reform proposals to be considered by the Federal Communications Commission and Congress. The ideas contained in the experts' essays were presented and debated at a conference hosted by The Progress & Freedom Foundation, which was held in Washington, DC, on December 8, 2000. The Progress & Freedom Foundation studies the impact of the digital revolution and its implications for public policy. It conducts research in fields such as electronic commerce, telecommunications and the impact of the Internet on government, society and economic growth. It also studies issues such as the need to reform government regulation, especially in technology-intensive fields such as medical innovation, energy and environmental regulation.
