Edgar V Lerma, Mitchell Rosner
R7,796 Discovery Miles 77 960 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Through case presentations and a question and answer format," Clinical Decisions in Nephrology, Hypertension and Renal Transplantation" provides a state of the art, updated reference for the optimal management of patients with diseases of the kidneys, and hypertension. This volume starts with the assessment of the patient, focusing on history and physical examination. Subsequently, cases depicting various clinical syndromes and/or diseases are presented, with questions centering on the appropriate diagnostic and treatment strategy. This sets the stage for a Socratic approach to learning between the attending physician and the house staff or medical student.

This is the only book featuring problem-oriented true to life clinical cases in this format to cover nephrology, hypertension and kidney transplantation. Written by renowned actively practicing clinicians, this unique reference is both comprehensive and concise and will be of great value to hospitalists and internists, as well as students, and interns/residents rotating in nephrology and internal medicine.Clinical practitioners, in the fields of critical care and hypertension specialists would also find this of value."

The Kidney and Hypertension in Diabetes Mellitus (Hardcover, 5th ed. 2000): Carl Erik Mogensen The Kidney and Hypertension in Diabetes Mellitus (Hardcover, 5th ed. 2000)
Carl Erik Mogensen
R4,424 Discovery Miles 44 240 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Few complications of systemic diseases are better understood than diabetic nephropathy. In large part, progress in this area is due to Carl Erik Mogensen's steadfast preoccupation over more than three decades with the disorder's epidemiology, pathogenesis, pathophysiology, clinical diagnosis and evolving strategies of management. Though he sparked progress in each of these areas, he generously opens the forum of discussion to many expert contributors to this latest and most comprehensive edition of this exemplary textbook. In eliciting all relevant and up-to-date views, the reader, whether internist, pediatrician or specialist in endocrinology or nephrology, is assured a thorough review of the entire subject and in a format which is exceptionally well-written, well-illustrated and easy to read. Each of the prior editions have been an essential resource for my own work in this field and the 5th edition will no doubt continue to provide the information I and others will require to move forward in the years ahead. If only the other renal diseases were as masterfully synthesized, how much easier our task would be of achieving a comprehensive vision of all else in clinical nephrology. Barry M. Brenner, M.D., Samuel A. Levine Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School

Basic, Clinical, and Surgical Nephrology (Hardcover, 1985 ed.): L. J. Didio, P. Motta Basic, Clinical, and Surgical Nephrology (Hardcover, 1985 ed.)
L. J. Didio, P. Motta
R5,217 Discovery Miles 52 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This unique volume may very well foreshadow the treatment of renal disease in the twenty-first century. The editors have obviously compiled and reviewed the current clinical problems in which the kidney plays a major role. They then selected as topics for chapters those in which recent scientific investigations have added significant new data. The investigators themselves or their peers have been persuaded to produce a summary of current concepts of renal structure and function for each topic. The result is a volume which will be as invaluable as a clinical guide on the laboratory bench as it will be a reference for the clinician seeking guidance to rational therapy at the bedside. The strength of the volume lies in the incorporation of those data on renal cellular structure and function which hold the key to the etiology of the majority of renal diseases we now call 'end-stage'. Fully, two-thirds of the volume is devoted to current concepts of renal function and related subcellular structure of various renal tissues. The illustrations, correlations, and explanations are superbly presented in much detail and with an obvious effort to fill out the current knowledge of each subject. We may anticipate this book will remain a valuable reference for many years to come.

Jean-Louis Touraine, Etc
R2,437 Discovery Miles 24 370 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Since the mid 1990s, transplantation knowledge and techniques, as well as insights into pharmacology, have improved, thus enabling greater access to transplantation for patients. The pool of organs for transplantation is stable, and therefore insufficient to cope with the growing demand. To adjust demand and resources in the most equitable way, organ procurement and allocation have been organized nationally and often across borders. The national and international organ exchange programmes were studied and discussed during the Congress on Organ Allocation, from which this book is derived. This book describes the state of the art in the management of waiting lists and the allocation of organs in transplantation. It includes chapters on the possibilities of expanding the pool of available cadaver organs. It also analyzes the results of transplantation of cadaver organs from older donors and marginal, non-heart-beating donors. Transplantation policies based on the offering of organs by living donors are also described, as is the impact of delayed graft function on organ allocation.

Around The World With Nephrology: An Autobiography (Hardcover): Zbylut J. Twardowski Around The World With Nephrology: An Autobiography (Hardcover)
Zbylut J. Twardowski
R2,711 Discovery Miles 27 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the story of a boy raised up in a village in Poland during World War II, with his father deported to concentration camps throughout the war. Some years after he graduated from medical school, he serendipitously entered the then developing field of dialysis, and he eventually embarked on a career-long practice in the field, where he contributed to the development of a number of new inventions and therapeutic methods. The book includes inspirational stories of his patients; the struggles he faced in the course of getting his numerous inventions patented; his research work in the 1990s; his work of teaching and consulting; and not the least, his travels to interesting places unrelated to business. The book concludes with an epilogue summarizing his life, as well as his predictions regarding treatment of chronic renal failure in the future.

The Kidney and Hypertension in Diabetes Mellitus (Hardcover, 1988 ed.): Carl Erik Mogensen The Kidney and Hypertension in Diabetes Mellitus (Hardcover, 1988 ed.)
Carl Erik Mogensen
R9,004 Discovery Miles 90 040 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The first sporadic observations describing renal abnormalities in diabetes were published late in the 19th century, but systematic studies of the kidney in diabetes started only half a century ago after the paper by Cambier in 1934 and the much more famous study by Kimmelstiel and Wilson in 1936. These authors described two distinct features of renal involvement in diabetes: early hyperfiltration and late nephropathy. Diabetic nephropathy is, despite half a century of studies, still a very pertinent problem, renal disease in diabetes now being a very common cause of end-stage renal failure in Europe and North America and probably throughout the world. It is a very important part of the generalized vascular disease found in long-term diabetes as described by Knud Lundbaek in his mono graph Long-term Diabetes in 1953, published by Munks gaard, Copenhagen. Surprisingly, there has not been a comprehensive volume describing all aspects of renal involvement in diabetes, and the time is now ripe for such a volume summarizing the very considerable research activity within this field during the last decade and especially during the last few years. This book attempts to cover practically all aspects of renal involvement in diabetes. It is written by colleagues who are themselves active in the many fields of medical research covered in this volume: epidemiology, physiology and pathophysiology, laboratory methodology, and renal pathology. New studies deal with the dia gnosis and treatment of both incipient and overt nephropathy by metabolie, antihypertensive, and dietary invention."
