The Kidney and Hypertension in Diabetes Mellitus (Hardcover, 1988 ed.): Carl Erik Mogensen The Kidney and Hypertension in Diabetes Mellitus (Hardcover, 1988 ed.)
Carl Erik Mogensen
R9,769 Discovery Miles 97 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first sporadic observations describing renal abnormalities in diabetes were published late in the 19th century, but systematic studies of the kidney in diabetes started only half a century ago after the paper by Cambier in 1934 and the much more famous study by Kimmelstiel and Wilson in 1936. These authors described two distinct features of renal involvement in diabetes: early hyperfiltration and late nephropathy. Diabetic nephropathy is, despite half a century of studies, still a very pertinent problem, renal disease in diabetes now being a very common cause of end-stage renal failure in Europe and North America and probably throughout the world. It is a very important part of the generalized vascular disease found in long-term diabetes as described by Knud Lundbaek in his mono graph Long-term Diabetes in 1953, published by Munks gaard, Copenhagen. Surprisingly, there has not been a comprehensive volume describing all aspects of renal involvement in diabetes, and the time is now ripe for such a volume summarizing the very considerable research activity within this field during the last decade and especially during the last few years. This book attempts to cover practically all aspects of renal involvement in diabetes. It is written by colleagues who are themselves active in the many fields of medical research covered in this volume: epidemiology, physiology and pathophysiology, laboratory methodology, and renal pathology. New studies deal with the dia gnosis and treatment of both incipient and overt nephropathy by metabolie, antihypertensive, and dietary invention."

Urolithiasis - Medical and Surgical Management of Stone Disease (Paperback): Margaret S. Pearle, Stephen Y Nakada Urolithiasis - Medical and Surgical Management of Stone Disease (Paperback)
Margaret S. Pearle, Stephen Y Nakada
R1,318 Discovery Miles 13 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Urolithiasis, or stone disease occurs in 7% of women and 12% of men at some point, and these statistics are rising. Furthermore, for those who form a stone, the likelihood of a recurrence is nearly 50% within 5 years of initial diagnosis. Therefore, the need for effective, minimally invasive alternatives for stone eradication and prevention is critical. Because stone disease comprises a large part of any urologist's practice, a thorough knowledge of the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of stone disease is critical in order to understand and implement treatment strategies to prevent stone formation. Likewise, a working knowledge of the surgical treatments, instrumentation and outcomes is necessary to arm patients with sufficient information to make an informed decision and to provide the appropriate treatment modality for a given stone situation. In Urolithiasis: Medical and Surgical Management, the authors provide a complete guide to the management of stone disease from both a medical and surgical prospective. This book should be an invaluable resource for those who treat stone disease in any capacity, whether surgically or medically, acutely or long-term.

Functional Imaging in Nephro-Urology (Paperback): Alain Prigent, Amy Piepsz Functional Imaging in Nephro-Urology (Paperback)
Alain Prigent, Amy Piepsz
R1,978 Discovery Miles 19 780 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Formulated by members of the International Scientific Committee of Radionuclides in Nephro-urology (ISCORN), Functional Imaging in Nephro-urology is not a textbook on uronephrology or radionuclides in nephro-urology, or even a book on new techniques in imaging. What the editor and authors provide here is a unique opportunity to evaluate the strategic management techniques (both diagnosis and follow-up) of a number of uronephrological entities. Demonstrating the experience of the authors in using various imaging modalities, and detailing the benefits and controversies which are associated with their clinical applications, this text presents management strategies based on the patient, the choice of modality, and cost implications. Detailed, well-referenced and highly illustrated, this is an important book for radiologists, nephrologists and urologists working with children and adults, specialists in renal nuclear medicine, and pediatricians.

Nephrology - Clinical Cases Uncovered (Paperback): M Clatworthy Nephrology - Clinical Cases Uncovered (Paperback)
M Clatworthy
R1,301 Discovery Miles 13 010 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Nephrology is an important speciality; patients with acute or chronic kidney failure are encountered in every medical and surgical speciality, as well as in general practice. On most general medical rotations and on most surgical wards there are patients with renal problems. Renal medicine is taught on rotation during degree courses, and Foundation training programmes frequently include attachments in nephrology, urology, and renal transplantation. "Nephrology: Clinical Cases Uncovered" contains clinical presentations with real-life patient cases and outcomes as seen on the wards and in exams, and leads students through a practical approach to diagnosis and management of kidney disease.

Following a question-answer approach, including self-assessment material and a 'refresher' section on the basic science of this clinical area, "Nephrology: Clinical Cases Uncovered" features investigations and the treatment options available for patients with renal disease, including those requiring renal replacement therapy with dialysis and transplantation. Difficult concepts are clarified, using simple diagrams to explain the link between pathology and clinical presentation.

"Nephrology: Clinical Cases Uncovered" is ideal for medical students, junior doctors on the Foundation Programme, GP trainees, and specialist nurses and nurse practitioners. This book is also a useful refresher for nephrology trainees at the beginning of their specialist training programme.

Chronic Failures - Kidneys, Regimes of Care, and the Mexican State (Hardcover): Ciara Kierans Chronic Failures - Kidneys, Regimes of Care, and the Mexican State (Hardcover)
Ciara Kierans
R3,243 Discovery Miles 32 430 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Chronic Failures: Kidneys, Regimes of Care and the Mexican State is about Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and the relentless search for renal care lived out in the context of poverty, inequality and uneven welfare arrangements. Based on ethnographic research conducted in the state of Jalisco, this book documents the routes uninsured Mexican patients take in order to access resource intensive biotechnical treatments, that is, different modes of dialysis and organ transplantation. It argues that these routes are normalized, bureaucratically, socially and epidemiologically, and turned into a locus for exploitation and profit.  Without a coherent logic of healthcare access, negotiating regimes of renal care has catastrophic consequences for those with the least resources to expend in that effort. In carrying both the costs and the burden of care, the practices of patients without entitlement offer a critical vantage point on the interplay between the state, markets in healthcare and the sick body.

Nephron-Sparing Surgery (Hardcover): Krishna Sasidharan, Mark Soloway Nephron-Sparing Surgery (Hardcover)
Krishna Sasidharan, Mark Soloway
R4,470 Discovery Miles 44 700 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Despite the rising popularity of the minimally invasive laparoscopic option, open nephron-sparing surgery is still seen by many experts as the 'gold standard' for open surgery for kidney tumors and should remain the first choice for many patients. This challenges the idea that less-invasive therapies are always more desirable than open surgery. While laparoscopic nephron-sparing surgery may be a more attractive option for treating small, easily accessible kidney tumors, for large tumors this is not always the case. Nephron-sparing surgery is a outstanding text that analyses all forms of surgery, open or laparoscopic, as well as providing a backdrop on renal cell carcinoma in general, and the complications and outcomes following surgery that both surgeon and patient will face. Featuring 100 colour photos, the text includes chapters on: Imaging renal masses: current status Open nephron-sparing surgery for renal cell carcinoma Minimally invasive approaches for renal cell carcinoma: an overview Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy Controversies in nephron-sparing surgery Renal cell carcinoma: long-term outcome following nephron-sparing surgery Dr Sasidharan and Professor Soloway have created a superb text covering all aspects of nephron-sparing surgery that should provide excellent guidance for all those who are just beginning to perform nephron-sparing surgery or act as an aide-memoire for those familiar with nephron-sparing surgery.
