The Intentional Relationship - Occupational Therapy and Use of Self (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Renee R. Taylor The Intentional Relationship - Occupational Therapy and Use of Self (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Renee R. Taylor
R2,140 Discovery Miles 21 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Right on target. Innovative, nothing comes near it in occupational therapy. A sophisticated meld of occupational therapy and psychology. It is very innovative for occupational therapy and other fields. I am thoroughly impressed." "I have found no occupational therapy book more interesting to me than this one. I always have to go outside of the field to find such rich and interesting material." -Sharan Schwartzberg, EdD, OTR, FAOTA, Tufts University, Boston, MA., review of the 1st Edition This groundbreaking book addresses a critical aspect of the occupational therapy practice--the art and science of building effective therapeutic relationships with clients. A distinguished clinician, scientist, and educator, Renee Taylor, PhD, has defined a conceptual practice model, the Intentional Relationship Model, to identify how the client and the therapist each contribute to the unique interpersonal dynamic that becomes the therapeutic relationship. She emphasizes how therapists must act deliberately, thoughtfully, and with vigilant anticipation of the challenges and breakthroughs that have the potential to influence the course of the relationship. In the 2nd Edition, Dr. Taylor adds extensively to the case content with examples ranging across the age and practice setting continuum. She introduces these clients in Chapter 1 and revisits them throughout the book to illustrate the application of the Intentional Relationship Model to a variegated mixture of common interpersonal challenges in occupational therapy practice. She also includes expanded coverage of how to conduct a client interview and to effectively manage difficult client behaviors, conflicts, and other rifts with clients and their caregivers.

Therapeutic Aesthetics - Performative Encounters in Moving Image Artworks (Paperback): Maria Walsh Therapeutic Aesthetics - Performative Encounters in Moving Image Artworks (Paperback)
Maria Walsh
R1,183 Discovery Miles 11 830 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Therapeutic Aesthetics focuses on moving image artworks as expressive of social psychopathological symptoms that arise in a climate of neoliberal cognitive capitalism, such as anxiety, depression, post- traumatic stress disorder and burnout. The book is not about engaging with art as a therapy to express personal traumas and symptoms but proposes that a selective range of contemporary moving image artworks performatively mimic the psychopathologies of cognitive capitalism in a conflictual manner. Engaging with a range of philosophers and theorists, including Bernard Stiegler, Franco 'Bifo' Berardi, Judith Butler, Felix Guattari, and Eva Illouz, Maria Walsh proposes that there is no cure, only provisional moments of reparation. To address this idea, she uses the concept of the pharmakon, the Greek term for drug which means both remedy and poison. Through this approach, she maintains the conflict between the curative and the harmful in relation to moving image artworks by artists such as Omer Fast, Liz Magic Laser, Leigh Ledare, Oriana Fox, Gillian Wearing and Rehana Zaman. As transitional spaces, these artworks can enable a toleration of anxiety and conflict that may offer another kind of aesthetic self-cultivation than the subjection to biopolitical governance in cognitive capitalism.

Using an evidence-based perspective and key concepts from the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, this guideline provides an overview of the occupational therapy process for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the prevalence of which is increasing rapidly in the United States. It defines the occupational therapy domain, process, and interventions—including sensory integration and sensory-based interventions, relationship-based interventions, school-based programs, social skills interventions, and comprehensive behavioral interventions—that occur within the boundaries of acceptable practice. This publication is designed to help occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants, as well as individuals who manage, reimburse, or set policy for occupational therapy services, understand the contribution of occupational therapy in treating children and adolescents with ASD. This guideline also can serve as a reference for parents, school administrators, educators, and other school staff; health care facility managers; education and health care regulators; third-party payers; and managed care organizations.

Physical Activity and Mental Health (Hardcover): Angela Clow, Sarah Edmunds Physical Activity and Mental Health (Hardcover)
Angela Clow, Sarah Edmunds
R1,837 Discovery Miles 18 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With contributions from internationally renowned experts, "Physical Activity and Mental Health" presents research illustrating how the use of physical activity can enhance well-being and reduce the impact of potentially debilitating mental health conditions. Written for students, researchers, and professionals in exercise science, fitness, and health care fields, "Physical Activity and Mental Health "details the factors that influence the relationship between mental health and physical activity as well as the benefits of physical activity in dealing with mental illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease, depression, schizophrenia, and addictive behaviors. Readers will learn how promotion of physical activity can lead to a greater sense of well-being or act as a medical intervention. Exercise readiness checklists, mental health checklists, and population-specific sample activity plans assist in creating and implementing exercise programs to meet the needs of patients or clients.

"Physical Activity and Mental Health" begins with an exploration of the brain systems that are affected by physical activity and how these affect mental well-being. The text continues with discussion of the following topics:

- An overview of physical activity guidelines and the challenges in measuring physical activity in a mental health context

- How physical activity promotes well-being across the life span and among socioeconomic statuses

- How physical activity and exercise can improve quality of life and recovery in people with a range of mental and physical health conditions

- An examination of exercise dependence, including its relationship with eating disorders and body dysmorphia and the negative impacts of excessive exercise on mental health

Learning features in each chapter assist both the student and practitioner in learning and referencing the information. A chapter outline and an editors' introduction provide an overview of the structure and content. Key concepts cover important ideas and definitions. Evidence to Practice boxes review current knowledge and theory from a perspective of practical application. Each chapter concludes with a summary and list of references, and additional highlight boxes throughout the text accent important topics.

"Physical Activity and Mental Health" integrates theoretical and applied approaches with practical tips on exercise programs, measurement strategies, and methodological considerations. Balancing theory and practice, this resource assists students, researchers, and practitioners in understanding the links between physical activity, well-being, and mental health and how to apply this information for the benefit of patients and clients across a range of populations and conditions.
