This book presents an integrated and coordinated framework for
assessing developmental, psychological, and behavioral disorders in
early childhood. Expert contributors advocate for
natural-environment methods in addition to standardized measures in
assessing academic and social skills as well as age-specific
behavior problems in young children. Chapters model collaborations
between clinicians, family, and daycare and school personnel,
address diagnostic and classification issues, and conceptualize
assessment as flexible, ongoing, and, as necessary, leading to
coordinated services. The book gives practitioners and researchers
critical tools toward establishing best practices in an
increasingly complex and important area, leading to better
prevention and intervention outcomes. Included in the coverage:
Standardized assessment of cognitive development. Authentic and
performance-based assessment. The use of Response to Interve ntion
(RTI) in early childhood.Collaboration in school and child care
settings. Anxiety disorders, PTSD, OCD, and depression in young
children. Sleeping, feeding/eating, and attachment problems in
early childhood. Early Childhood Assessment in School and Clinical
Child Psychology is an essential resource for clinicians and
related professionals, researchers, and graduate students in child
and school psychology; assessment, testing, and evaluation;
occupational therapy; family studies, educational psychology; and
speech pathology.
This publication and Self-Paced Clinical Course aims to assist
occupational therapists to further develop their clinical
competency in working with adults with TBI. Features include
"Points to Ponder," a glossary, and case studies. This third volume
in AOTA's Neurorehabilitation in Occupational Therapy Series can
serve as a textbook for advanced-level occupational therapy
students and assist in skill development for practicing clinicians.
The Self-Paced Clinical Course is the 2nd Edition of the Traumatic
Brain Injury module published in Core Concepts in
Neurorehabilitation (2006).

Adults with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) or a suspected
diagnosis often have hidden needs that go unmet by public services.
This book describes and analyses the Kent ASC enablement approach,
a short-term intervention led by occupational therapy to promote
people with ASC becoming more self-aware and self-sufficient
outside of public services. Designed to teach adults with ASC
strategies for controlling their sensory, motor-processing and
social-communication needs and preferences, this person-centred
approach gives them greater self-management over their lives. The
book also provides an overview of a range of both professional and
self-help tools and technologies which can be used by adults with
ASC to increase independence and wellbeing. Case-studies
demonstrate the transformative effects of enablement on daily life
for adults with ASC. The book also provides recommendation for
building on the enablement approach.
The first text to address the evolving new area of preventive
occupational therapy as a primary health promotion tool. Teaches
occupational therapy students about health promotion and prevention
theory and practice from a wellness rather than an illness
perspective. Using cutting edge examples, the authors explore how
to incorporate this new paradigm into clinical practice, and how to
develop wellness interventions across the lifespan. Meets the
Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Educations (ACOTE)
standards requiring educational programs to transition to Masters
degree level. Features extensive pedagogy.
Advancements in medical care related to stroke have greatly
improved in recent years, and the annual stroke death rate has
declined 35.8% since 2010. This decrease has led to a dramatic
increase in the prevalence of people living with chronic symptoms
from stroke, which is now a leading cause of disability and one of
the most common health conditions treated by occupational
therapists. This Practice Guideline provides an overview of the
occupational therapy process for adults who have experienced a
stroke, defining the domain and interventions that occur within
acceptable occupational therapy practice. Topics include
evaluation, intervention, and outcomes, and extensive attention is
given to cognitive, motor, and psychosocial impairments.
You are never going to be perfect. I am never going to be perfect.
Perfection is not attainable. Happiness is always transient. Makes
you want to give up already. Then, as if life isn't difficult
enough, neuroscience reveals our brains are wired from birth toward
negative thinking. Negative thinking helps us expect and see danger
because we know it's out there, which aids our survival.
Unfortunately, negative thinking also makes us miserable; but, we
do it so often, we are experts in manufacturing our self created
misery. You know this: If you do something often enough, you're
going to get really, really good at it. No wonder we are experts
when it comes to seeing "the glass is only half full." Our negative
circuits are always busy Why try, right? The answer is, you should
try. Life is short. While you are here, you want to enjoy as much
of your life as you can.
The Brown Pony Series Book Four: The Business of Hippotherapy is
written for therapists who dream of entering into the arena to
combine horses in their professional treatment plan with clients.
The book is laid out in a logical manner beginning with a section
called "Common Practice," formatted as questions and answers about
how other therapists offer hippotherapy. Section two introduces
"Getting Started" in hippotherapy by presenting ideas on legal
structure and limiting liability. Then practical advice is explored
regarding the facility and the therapy horses. Many therapists have
difficulty charging clients and the fourth section covers budgeting
and fee setting. One caveat of offering treatment in a natural
environment with multiple support staff and a living animal
inevitably is the risk of therapy cancellations and this topic is
presented with multiple years of statistics. Finally, dozens and
dozens of business form samples are offered to you in the appendix.
