Occupational therapy's promotion of meaningful participation requires practitioners to have the expertise to conduct client-centered evaluations, design occupation-based interventions, and facilitate positive outcomes. Ways of Living: Intervention Strategies to Enable Participation guides students and practitioners in working with clients across the wide range of occupational therapy services to achieve improved outcomes for clients-outcomes increasingly required by health care reimbursement systems. Updates to the 5th edition reflect current evidence and include new chapters on using the OTPF, the occupational therapist-occupational therapy assistant relationship, family caregiving, and primary care, as well as new chapters on conditions frequently seen in practice, such as ASD, mental health in children, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease. Highlights include- Part I. Foundations for Occupational Therapy Practice-4 chapters explore using the OTPF, client-centered care, the role of the occupational therapy assistant, and training and intervention strategies. Part II. Working With Children-3 pediatrics-focused chapters guide intervention strategies for autism spectrum disorder, developmental disabilities, and promoting mental health. Part III. Working With Adults-13 chapters discuss working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, psychiatric disabilities or mental illness, rheumatic diseases, spinal cord injury, stroke, upper-limb loss, burns, Alzheimer's disease, traumatic brain injury, low vision, and cancer, as well as addressing sexuality and spirituality. Part IV. Occupational Service Delivery-5 chapter describe occupational therapy's role in driving and community mobility, assistive technology, environmental adaptations, family caregiving, and primary care. Learning objectives, key terms and concepts, case examples, and review questions facilitate student learning. Practical and solidly occupation-centered, Ways of Living prepares students and practitioners to demonstrate occupational therapy's distinct value in enabling participation.

Occupational therapy is an allied health profession with an underlying belief that engaging in occupations promotes both health and wellness. This comprehensive text lays the foundation for occupation-based practice and addresses the contextual issues of working within the acute care setting. The chapters help to demystify medical conditions and issues routinely encountered by occupational therapists working in this practice area. Detailed research covers the importance of occupational therapists' knowledge of how diseases affect the human body, including the cardiovascular, nervous, and endocrine systems. Chapters review the evaluation process, including chart review, measures, and interpretations and recommendations for intervention to ensure the ultimate level of independence for each patient. Occupational Therapy in Acute Care is designed specifically for therapists working in a hospital setting to acquire better knowledge of the various body systems, common conditions, diseases, and procedures. Students and educators will find this new publication to be the most useful text available on the topic.

Over the past few decades, the use of the arts in health has blossomed. What, for many centuries, was seen as a fringe activity is now being recognised as a field that has enormous potential for impacting positively on both individuals and societies. However, despite this surge in interest and activity, there is still limited support available for people working in the field. Although the number of practical training courses for artists is growing and more universities are establishing research groups, most training activity occurs in either practice or research; there are relatively few opportunities to gain parallel experience in both. Arts in Health: Designing and Researching Interventions provides a complete overview of how to go about undertaking research and practice in the field of arts in health. It starts by exploring the context for arts in health interventions, including the history of the use of arts in health and the theoretical and political developments that have laid the foundations for its flourishing. It also considers what 'arts in health' encompasses and the range of disciplines involved. Part II examines how to design an arts in health intervention, develop partnerships and find funding and considers the sensitivities around working in healthcare. Part III considers the value of research for the field of arts in health and how to design and undertake a research project. Finally, part IV provides a fact file of arts in health research and practice, showing how the arts can be applied and the benefits they can bring across a range of medical disciplines. The book will be valuable for researchers, practitioners, healthcare professionals and those interested in learning more about the field.
Occupational therapy can no longer ignore the larger contextual issues that bring a diverse array of clients for services. Practitioners, educators, researchers, and students across all practice areas must recognize the need to be social agents for change and to educate about sociopolitical structures that maintain inequities and disparities in health and occupation. Only by becoming culturally competent can occupational therapy professionals effectively interact with all clients and their families and gain the necessary information to act on their needs. |
