Positional Therapy in Obstructive Sleep Apnea (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015): Nico De Vries,... Positional Therapy in Obstructive Sleep Apnea (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Nico De Vries, Madeline Ravesloot, J. Peter van Maanen
R4,189 Discovery Miles 41 890 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is the most prevalent sleep disordered breathing disorder. It has become apparent that in more than half the patients with OSA, the frequency and duration of apneas are influenced by body position. To treat patients with Position Dependent OSA (POSA), positional therapy can be considered for preventing patients from sleeping in the worst sleeping position. Treatment of POSA has advanced dramatically recently with the introduction of a new generation of positional therapy. Positional Therapy in Obstructive Sleep Apnea presents improved OSA diagnostic methods and the tools needed to implement positional therapy in clinical practice. This includes patient work-up, positional therapy with or without other treatments, consequences of guidelines and future developments. Clinicians, students and researchers will find this comprehensive guide to be an invaluable resource for evaluating and treating sleep breathing disorders.

Transactional Perspectives on Occupation (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Malcolm P. Cutchin, Virginia A. Dickie Transactional Perspectives on Occupation (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Malcolm P. Cutchin, Virginia A. Dickie
R5,372 Discovery Miles 53 720 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

An occupation is, most simply put, any activity we participate in that engages (occupies) our attention, interests, and/or expectations, at any point throughout the life course. This book offers an emerging and innovative perspective on occupation, based in the work of American philosopher John Dewey and other pragmatists, that challenges accepted ideas. Each chapter presents a lively and multifaceted dialogue on transactional perspectives on occupation. Scholars from Europe, North America, and Australasia have written a diverse set of arguments and case studies about occupation, covering theoretical, methodological and applied issues relevant to the topic. In addition, contributors make connections with significant authors from various disciplines that make clearer the roles of occupation and occupational science across many cultures and contexts. The transactional perspectives articulated in this book both implicitly and explicitly suggest that occupations are forms of activity that create and re-create a multitude of our relationships with the world. Often taken for granted by some academic disciplines, occupation is a core element of human life. This book is a provocative and critical analysis of the focal concept for occupational therapy and science.

Social Profile - Assessment of Social Participation in Children, Adolescents, and Adults (Paperback): Mary V. Donohue Social Profile - Assessment of Social Participation in Children, Adolescents, and Adults (Paperback)
Mary V. Donohue
R3,834 R3,615 Discovery Miles 36 150 Save R219 (6%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Social participation includes a broad spectrum of human behavior, and social interaction, engagement, and cooperation become more complex as people develop and age. Based on the natural social development of children, adolescents, and adults, the Social Profile is a psychosocial instrument designed to assess behavioral interactions. Intended for use by therapists, teachers, team leaders, and group members, the Social Profile assesses whether groups or individuals participate appropriately at a level suitable for the activity or development stage. This assessment includes a Children's version and an Adult/Adolescent version. The Social Profile is unique in that it offers a general participation assessment across five levels of participation and cooperation and the specific behaviors that make up these five levels. The Social Profile provides both a general overview and detailed measurement of social cooperative behaviors. The manual details instructions on how to administer the Social Profile with groups and individuals, describes how the assessment was developed, and summarized research to support its use. Also included are 14 case examples that illustrate how the Social Profile can be used. A flash drive contains downloadable and writable version of the Children's version, the Adult/Adolescent version, and a group participation social observation sheet.

R1,561 R1,379 Discovery Miles 13 790 Save R182 (12%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The new edition of this landmark international work builds on the previous two volumes, offering a window onto occupational therapy practice, theory and ideas in different cultures and geographies. It emphasizes the importance of critically deconstructing and engaging with the broader context of occupation, particularly around how occupational injustices are shaped through political, economic and historical factors. Centering on the wider social and political aspects of occupation and occupation-based practices, this textbook aims to inspire occupational therapy students and practitioners to include transformational elements into their practice. It also illustrates how occupational therapists from all over the world can affect positive changes by engaging with political and historical contexts. Divided into six sections, the new edition begins by analyzing the key concepts outlined throughout, along with an overview on the importance and practicalities of monitoring and evaluation in community projects. Section Two explores occupation and justice emphasizing that issues of occupational injustice are present everywhere, in different forms: from clinical settings to community-based rehabilitation. Section Three covers the enactment of different Occupational Therapies with a focus on the multiplicity of occupational therapy from the intimately personal to the broadly political. Section Four engages with the broader context of occupational therapy from the political to the financial. The chapters in this section highlight the recent financial crisis and the impact it has had on people's everyday life. Section Five collects a range of different approaches to working to enable a notion of occupational justice. Featuring chapters from across the globe, Section Six concludes by highlighting the importance and diversity of educational practices. Comprehensively covers occupational therapy theory, methodology and practice examples related to working with underserved and neglected populations Gives a truly global overview with contributions from over 100 international leading experts in the field and across a range of geographical, political and linguistic contexts Demonstrates how occupational injustices are shaped through political, economic and historical factors Advocates participatory approaches which work for those who experience inequalities Includes a complete set of new chapters Explores neoliberalism and financial contexts, and their impact on occupation Examines the concept of disability Discusses theoretical and practical approaches to occupational justice

Reminiscence Work with Old People (Paperback, New edition): Clare Gillies, Anne James Reminiscence Work with Old People (Paperback, New edition)
Clare Gillies, Anne James
R1,216 Discovery Miles 12 160 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Long-term memory endures and short-term memory becomes tenuous in old age. We are our memories. Linking an old person to their experience has been shown to reaffirm 'the self'. If this is done skillfully, sensitively and without intrusion, the benefits are twofold. First, and most important, the old person becomes less anxious, cut off and confused and , in linking to the past, is more able to participate in the present. Second, it may only be possible for those who care for confused old people to understand their worries and pre-occupations if their past lives are known and respected. These experienced authors in reminiscence work provide a detailed, practical guide that is filled with anecdotes and information. The contents cover; the definition of old age; reminiscence work using oral history and group work; communication; reminiscence work projects; building resource banks and cultural information. Reminiscence work is practised by many social and health care disciplines, for example, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, residential care workers and volunteers. This book should be of interest to nurses working with older people; occupational therapists; social workers; and clinical psychologists.

From Birth to Five Years - Practical Developmental Examination (Paperback, 2nd edition): Ajay Sharma, Helen Cockerill From Birth to Five Years - Practical Developmental Examination (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Ajay Sharma, Helen Cockerill
R742 Discovery Miles 7 420 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This fully updated new edition of From Birth to Five Years: Practical Developmental Examination is a step-by-step 'how to' guide to the developmental examination of pre-school children. Based on up-to-date research into current child development philosophies and practices, this text supports the wider group of professionals who are required to assess children's developmental progress as part of their day-to-day working practices. It begins with a practical framework for developmental examination, then progresses through each of the key developmental domains, offering guidance on enquiry and observation, and on how to chart typical and atypical patterns, with red flags for recognising significant delay or disordered development. Advice is also given on how to make sense of the findings and how best to communicate this information to parents. To consolidate and expand on the practical and theoretical information across this book and its companion, Mary Sheridan's From Birth to Five Years, an updated companion website is available at www.routledge.com/cw/sharma, which includes the following additional learning material: An interactive timeline of the key developmental domains; Introductions to theory with links to further reading; Research summaries; Video clips demonstrating practical assessment skills; Downloadable resources including pictures to support examination of verbal and non-verbal development, and tips to facilitate and promote development. Developed alongside the original Mary Sheridan's From Birth to Five Years: Children's Developmental Progress, this unique guide expands on its normative developmental stages by offering practical guidance for health, education and social care professionals, or anyone concerned with monitoring children's developmental progress.

Community Occupational Therapy with Mentally Handicapped Adults (Paperback, 1990 Ed.): Debbie Isaac Community Occupational Therapy with Mentally Handicapped Adults (Paperback, 1990 Ed.)
Debbie Isaac
R1,254 Discovery Miles 12 540 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The philosophy of normalization and promotion of the plight of children and adults with mental handicaps has drawn more public attention in recent years. Governments in a number of countries have embarked upon policies involving the dosure of institutions, move ment of people with mental handicaps back into the community, and development of community-orientated programmes, although their reasons for this may be economically, rather than ideologically, motivated. Occupational therapists have moved into the community, along with other health professionals, in order to set up community services for people with mental handicaps. My own experience of working in a multidisciplinary team in Central London for 2V2 years, helping adults with mental handicaps to move out of an institution, has been a source of motivation to write this book. The amount of written material available on the occupational therapy approach to re settlement and de institutionalization is limited, in comparison with the massive amount of information written by, and for, other practitioners. Additionally, the number of texts written by and for occupational therapists with this dient group are few. Despite excellent support from OT colleagues, I experienced considerable frustration trying to define and perform my role, not helped by a shortage of texts to draw on."

Writing Well: Creative Writing and Mental Health (Paperback): Debra Penman, Deborah Philips, Liz Linnington Writing Well: Creative Writing and Mental Health (Paperback)
Debra Penman, Deborah Philips, Liz Linnington
R830 Discovery Miles 8 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Writing Well is a practical handbook of creative writing exercises which forms the basis of an indirect, nonconfrontational approach specifically intended for therapeutic use within the mental health field. Although people with emotional or psychological problems can find creative writing particularly difficult and unsettling, when writing courses are sensitively designed they are known to be of therapeutic benefit to people with mental health problems. The exercises are taken from the authors' successful practice with groups of people from a range of backgrounds in a variety of settings. The book is structured to be accessible and easy to use. The warm-ups and main exercises are organised by themes, such as positive memories, imagined worlds, changes and painful feelings. Guidelines are given for developing and adapting the exercises and practical suggestions for materials are included in the appendix. This volume will be an invaluable practical resource and imaginative inspiration for creative writing tutors and mental health professionals.

Occupational Therapy for Orthopaedic Conditions (Paperback, 1993): Dina Penrose Occupational Therapy for Orthopaedic Conditions (Paperback, 1993)
Dina Penrose
R1,378 Discovery Miles 13 780 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is written with occupational therapy students in mind, as a guide to newly qualified occupational therapists and for those returning to work after a break in service. Over the years I have been asked many times by newly appointed staffwhether I could recommend a book to prepare them for working with orthopaedic patients. I hope this small volume will fill the gap in the literature on the subject, and that it will be useful as a quick reference book. I hope it mayaiso fall into the hands ofthose in other disciplines and enable them to understand and appreciate the contribution of the occupational therapist to the rehabilitation team. This is the era ofjointreplacement, with ever-increasing demand forprimary and revision surgery. Improved implants and improved surgical techniques are constantly being researched. Surgery for bone tumour is less mutilating and more hopeful than ever before. Operations to release tendons and soft tissue contractures, tendon transfers, osteotomies, spinal fusion, joint fusion, etc. are performed on patients with neurological problems, thus improving function and appearance and preventing further deformity. These are some examples of procedures in this exciting and fast-developing field, while hospital beds are occupied for an ever shorter period of time and the potential for occupational therapy is enormous. 'If surgery is to be successful, the importance of assessing the patient as a human being cannot be over-emphasised' (Souter, 1987). This is precisely the approach of the occupational therapist.

Occupational Therapy in Rheumatology - An holistic approach (Paperback, 1990 ed.): Lynne Sandles Occupational Therapy in Rheumatology - An holistic approach (Paperback, 1990 ed.)
Lynne Sandles
R1,376 Discovery Miles 13 760 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is written primarily for occupational therapists and occupational therapy students but will be of relevance to anyone working with clients with rheumatoid disease. It is hoped that the text will communicate the challenge faced by therapists to establish management programmes appropriate to the identified needs and priorities of the individuals with whom they work, the potential to utilize a wide range of skills and the opportunity to contribute to the understanding of the many unanswered questions which remain in relation to rheumatic diseases. The aim of this book is to present an holistic approach to the management of rheumatoid disease, considering first, the ways in which rheumatoid disease can affect a person's life and then looking at the approaches and techniques used by therapists to minimize these effects. This approach has been chosen as it is fundamental to both the philosophical basis of occupational therapy and the manage ment of a chronic progressive disease. An holistic approach considers the physical, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of a person and the ways in which these have been effected by an underlying disease process. Each of the components are interrelated, illustrating the complexity of establishing appropriate management programmes and evaluating their effectiveness. The first two chapters consider the effects of rheumatoid disease on clients and their families. An holistic approach identifies the need for a diversity of skills to be available to both the therapist and client.

Maryanne Morgan
R2,624 Discovery Miles 26 240 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is both an introductory text to the rehabilitation of stroke for student therapists and a reference text for qualified therapists. The layout of the book reflects these needs with Chapters 1-4 assuming a minimal level of understanding of the material. These chapters provide an introduction to the condition of stroke itself, the problern therapists face in assessing and treating stroke patients and therapeutic approaches in occu pational therapy. Prognosis of stroke is also discussed which is an issue taken up in later chapters concemed with expert systems. The use of microcomputers in occupational therapy is discussed throughout the book with particular reference to their direct role during therapy. Chapters 5-7 assume a higher level of understand ing from the reader although students will find the material useful as an insight into the work of the modern-day therapist. Chapter 5 addresses the work carried out in the area of biofeedback; Chapter 6 introduces the concept and uses of databases, and Chapter 7 discusses the versatility of microcomputers, especially in the provision of expert systems for the prognosis of stroke."
