Slow Cities - Conquering our Speed Addiction for Health and Sustainability (Paperback): Paul Tranter, Rodney Tolley Slow Cities - Conquering our Speed Addiction for Health and Sustainability (Paperback)
Paul Tranter, Rodney Tolley
R2,663 Discovery Miles 26 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Slow Cities: Conquering Our Speed Addiction for Health and Sustainability demonstrates, counterintuitively, that reducing the speed of travel within cities saves time for residents and creates more sustainable, liveable, prosperous and healthy environments. This book examines the ways individuals and societies became dependent on transport modes that required investment in speed. Using research from multiple disciplinary perspectives, the book demonstrates ways in which human, economic and environmental health are improved with a slowing of city transport. It identifies effective methods, strategies and policies for decreasing the speed of motorised traffic and encouraging a modal shift to walking, cycling and public transport. This book also offers a holistic assessment of the impact of speed on daily behaviours and life choices, and shows how a move to slow down will - perhaps surprisingly - increase accessibility to the city services and activities that support healthy, sustainable lives and cities.

Airports on Hold (Paperback): Sara Favargiotti Airports on Hold (Paperback)
Sara Favargiotti
R675 Discovery Miles 6 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What happens when a functional building is decommissioned? This book investigates liminal spaces: areas we occupy between here and there; structures that exist only as a place to be passed through, rather than as a destination in themselves. Its onus is buildings that have fallen to the wayside, and no longer channel continuous flows of human traffic. Combining architectural insight with a study of the transitory human condition, Airports on Hold analyses a number of obsolete airport infrastructures. As well as exploring how design impacts on an airport's success, this book investigates the relationship between small and medium airports and territories through a series of case studies. The research included herein has been compiled from the author's experiences at numerous universities. Especial thanks go out to the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the University IUAV of Venice, the University of Genoa, and the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, for supporting the creation of this book.

Transit System Resilience - Development Efforts & Challenges (Paperback): Kayla Hodges Transit System Resilience - Development Efforts & Challenges (Paperback)
Kayla Hodges
R2,071 Discovery Miles 20 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Public transit systems, which receive funding from the federal government, are vulnerable to catastrophic events, as demonstrated by the impact Hurricane Sandy and other events have had on transit systems. These events highlight our reliance on transit systems for access to jobs, medical care, and other services, as well as the cost of recovering from these events. Building resilience -- the ability to prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the risk of catastrophic events -- is one strategy to help limit the nation's fiscal exposure to catastrophic events. This book examines how DHS and DOT help transit agencies make their systems resilient; actions selected transit agencies take to make their systems resilient; and challenges transit agencies face with making their systems resilient. It also addresses the progress the Department of Transportation has made allocating, obligating, and disbursing the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act surface transportation funds; how the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) new Public Transportation Emergency Relief program compares to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) and Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) emergency relief programs; and the extent to which FTA and FEMA have implemented their memorandum of agreement to co-ordinate their roles and responsibilities when providing assistance to transit agencies.

After the Car (Hardcover, New): J. Urry After the Car (Hardcover, New)
J. Urry
R1,485 Discovery Miles 14 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

It is difficult to imagine a world without the car, and yet that is exactly what Dennis and Urry set out to do in this provocative new book. They argue that the days of the car are numbered: powerful forces around the world are undermining the car system and will usher in a new transport system sometime in the next few decades. Specifically, the book examines how several major processes are shaping the future of how we travel, including:
- Global warming and its many global consequences
- Peaking of oil supplies
- Increased digitisation of many aspects of economic and social life
- Massive global population increases
The authors look at changes in technology, policy, economy and society, and make a convincing argument for a future where, by necessity, the present car system will be re-designed and re-engineered.

Yet the book also suggests that there are some hugely bleak dilemmas facing the twenty first century. The authors lay out what they consider to be possible 'post-car' future scenarios. These they describe as 'local sustainability', 'regional warlordism' and 'digital networks of control'.

"After The Car" will be of great interest to planners, policy makers, social scientists, futurologists, those working in industry, as well as general readers.

Some have described the 20th Century as the century of the car. Now that century has come to a close - and things are about to change.

Cyclescapes of the Unequal City - Bicycle Infrastructure and Uneven Development (Hardcover): John G. Stehlin Cyclescapes of the Unequal City - Bicycle Infrastructure and Uneven Development (Hardcover)
John G. Stehlin
R2,548 Discovery Miles 25 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A critical look at the political economy of urban bicycle infrastructure in the United States Not long ago, bicycling in the city was considered a radical statement or a last resort, and few cyclists braved the inhospitable streets of most American cities. Today, however, the urban cyclist represents progress and the urban "renaissance." City leaders now undertake ambitious new bicycle infrastructure plans and bike share schemes to promote the environmental, social, and economic health of the city and its residents. Cyclescapes of the Unequal City contextualizes and critically examines this new wave of bicycling in American cities, exploring how bicycle infrastructure planning has become a key symbol of-and site of conflict over-uneven urban development. John G. Stehlin traces bicycling's rise in popularity as a key policy solution for American cities facing the environmental, economic, and social contradictions of the previous century of sprawl. Using in-depth case studies from San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Detroit, he argues that the mission of bicycle advocacy has converged with, and reshaped, the urban growth machine around a model of livable, environmentally friendly, and innovation-based urban capitalism. While advocates envision a more sustainable city for all, the deployment of bicycle infrastructure within the framework of the neoliberal city in many ways intensifies divisions along lines of race, class, and space. Cyclescapes of the Unequal City speaks to a growing interest in bicycling as an urban economic and environmental strategy, its role in the politics of gentrification, and efforts to build more diverse coalitions of bicycle advocates. Grounding its analysis in both regional political economy and neighborhood-based ethnography, this book ultimately uses the bicycle as a lens to view major shifts in today's American city.

Rural & Tribal Transit - Federal Role & Public Perspective (Hardcover): Cliff Fairfield Rural & Tribal Transit - Federal Role & Public Perspective (Hardcover)
Cliff Fairfield
R3,239 Discovery Miles 32 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Public transportation in rural areas can be critical to connecting people to jobs, shopping, and health services. The Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) Formula Grants for Rural Areas Program (rural transit program) is FTA's only dedicated grant program for rural and tribal transit. FTA apportions nearly all program funds to states. This book examines FTA's funding, oversight, and other support for the rural transit program; changes in services, ridership, and costs since 2009; and challenges that rural and tribal transit providers face and possible actions to address them.

Safety Measures for Local & Rural Roads - Management of Speed & Non-Motorized Users (Hardcover): Calvin Fenner Safety Measures for Local & Rural Roads - Management of Speed & Non-Motorized Users (Hardcover)
Calvin Fenner
R3,240 Discovery Miles 32 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Speeding is defined as exceeding posted speed limits or driving too fast for conditions. This is a behaviour that some drivers engage in without recognising the risks or seriously considering the consequences. The most serious consequences of speeding are the fatalities and serious injuries that result from crashes. Over the last ten years, speeding has been consistently identified as a contributing factor in nearly one-third of all roadway fatalities nation-wide. Crashes involving speeding occur on all road types but are particularly prevalent on the local rural road system. This book provides information on how to develop a Speed Management Program that is tailored to meet the needs of local rural road practitioners. A Speed Management Program can be effective in lowering the number of speeding crashes and the resulting fatalities and serious injuries on local rural roads. Non-motorised modes of travel can also be expected along these roads. Non-motorised transportation is primarily comprised of biking, walking, equestrian, and horse-drawn vehicles but may also include other non-powered transportation devices. This book is also a guide to assist local rural road practitioners in making effective use of current practices and resources addressing non-motorised mobility and safety, thereby creating a more accommodating and viable transportation system for all road users.

Bern Grush, John Niles
R2,857 R1,686 Discovery Miles 16 860 Save R1,171 (41%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

While many transportation and city planners, researchers, students, practitioners, and political leaders are familiar with the technical nature and promise of vehicle automation, consensus is not yet often seen on the impact that will result, or the policies and actions that those responsible for transportation systems should take. The End of Driving: Transportation Systems and Public Policy Planning for Autonomous Vehicles explores both the potential of vehicle automation technology and the barriers it faces when considering coherent urban deployment. The book evaluates the case for deliberate development of automated public transportation and mobility-as-a-service as paths towards sustainable mobility, describing critical approaches to the planning and management of vehicle automation technology. It serves as a reference for understanding the full life cycle of the multi-year transportation systems planning processes, including novel regulation, planning, and acquisition tools for regional transportation. Application-oriented, research-based, and solution-oriented rather than predict-and-warn, The End of Driving concludes with a detailed discussion of the systems design needed for accomplishing this shift. From the Foreword by Susan Shaheen: The authors ... extend potential solutions through a set of open-ended exercises after each chapter. Their approach is both strategic and deliberate. They lead the reader from definitions and context setting to the transition toward automation, employing a range of creative strategies and policies. While our quest to understand how to deploy automated vehicles is just beginning, this book provides a thoughtful introduction to inform this evolution.

Congestion Pricing - A Primer on Efficient Roadway Management (Hardcover): Alexander Davis, Geoffrey M Long Congestion Pricing - A Primer on Efficient Roadway Management (Hardcover)
Alexander Davis, Geoffrey M Long
R3,159 Discovery Miles 31 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

States and local jurisdictions are increasingly discussing congestion pricing as a strategy for improving transportation system performance. This book provides an overview on congestion pricing; non-toll pricing; technologies that enable congestion pricing; technologies that complement congestion pricing; transit and congestion pricing; and income-based equity impacts of congestion pricing.

Traffic Bottlenecks - Challenges & Reduction Strategies (Hardcover): Alex L Sloan, Connie F Dorsey Traffic Bottlenecks - Challenges & Reduction Strategies (Hardcover)
Alex L Sloan, Connie F Dorsey
R3,166 Discovery Miles 31 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Much of recurring congestion is due to physical bottlenecks -- potentially correctable points on the highway system where traffic flow is restricted. While many of the nation's bottlenecks can only be addressed through costly major construction projects or costly transportation alternative solutions (ie: high occupancy vehicle or toll lanes, dynamic pricing, investments in transit alternatives, etc.), there is significant opportunity for the application of operational and low-cost "fixes" at spot-specific locations. This book provides guidance to state and local transportation personnel on how to overcome barriers and challenges with reference to the implementation of localised congestion relief projects.

General Motors & Chrysler - Assistance & Exit From The Troubled Asset Relief Program (Hardcover): James S Kousakis, John Peter... General Motors & Chrysler - Assistance & Exit From The Troubled Asset Relief Program (Hardcover)
James S Kousakis, John Peter Leonard
R2,816 Discovery Miles 28 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Substantial federal assistance allowed GM and Chrysler to restructure their costs and improve their financial condition. Through federally-funded restructuring, GM and Chrysler reported lowering production costs and capacities by closing or idling factories, laying off employees, and reducing their debt and number of vehicle brands and models. These changes enabled both companies to report operating profits and reduce costs enough to be profitable at much lower sales levels than ever before. Nevertheless, to remain profitable, both companies must manage challenges affecting both their costs, including debt levels, and vehicle demand, such as launching products that are attractive to consumers amid rising fuel prices. This book examines the role of TARP assistance in the restructuring of the U.S. motor vehicle industry with a focus on unwinding the government stake in GMAC and Chrysler.

Toyota Automobiles & Unintended Acceleration (Hardcover): Craig A Orrigo Toyota Automobiles & Unintended Acceleration (Hardcover)
Craig A Orrigo
R5,565 Discovery Miles 55 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The U.S. Department of Transportation released results from an unprecedented ten-month study of potential electronic causes of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched the study last spring at the request of Congress, and enlisted NASA engineers to conduct new research into whether electronic systems or electromagnetic interference played a role in incidents of unintended acceleration. NASA engineers found no electronic flaws in Toyota vehicles capable of producing the large throttle openings required to create dangerous high-speed unintended acceleration incidents. This book provides an analysis of the research by NASA engineers and the U.S. Department of Transportation into Toyota automobiles and the unintended acceleration episodes that have been reported.

Highway Safety Improvement Efforts (Hardcover): Alexander J Mumford Highway Safety Improvement Efforts (Hardcover)
Alexander J Mumford
R4,089 Discovery Miles 40 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Fatalities on U.S. roads now total over 40,000 each year. Future reductions may require the Department of Transportation (DOT) to address new trends such as evolving crash-avoidance technologies and rapidly changing electronic devices that may distract drivers who use them on the road. This book examines how the DOT is deciding on responses to the crash avoidance and electronic distractions trends and other efforts to improve highway safety.

The nation's transportation and water infrastructures play a vital role in the economy. Private commercial activities and the daily lives of individuals depend on that physical infrastructure, which is provided by all levels of government in the United States. Concerns about the nations' infrastructure and its ability to support commerce and promote public well-being have prompted calls for greater infrastructure spending. This book analyses recent developments in spending on transportation and water infrastructure, trends in spending for capital and for operations and maintenance by the various levels of government, and the rationale for public spending on infrastructure.

One of the most important factors that affect a person's risk of injury in a motor vehicle crash is the age of the person. This book investigates patterns of injury severity, location of injuries, and contact sources for the driver injuries by driver age. Also discussed in this compilation is how age-related declines in vision, cognition, and physical ability affect how older road users drive and use various other modes of transportation. Also, effective response to traffic incidents can enhance safety and mobility for both road users and responders.

To improve aviation safety, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) plans to have in place the initial capabilities of a risk-based approach to safety oversight, known as a safety management system (SMS), by the end of fiscal year 2010. FAA is also implementing new procedures and technologies to enhance the safety, capacity, and efficiency of the national airspace system. Data are central to SMS and FAA's ability to test the impact of these changes on safety. This book addresses the FAA's current and planned use of data to oversee safety; the preliminary information on aircraft icing and winter operations; information on modifying the age standard for commercial pilots; potential strategies to address air ambulance safety concerns; and a look at increased efforts to address runway incursions.

High Speed Rail - Background & Issues (Paperback, New): Jonathan S. Fischer High Speed Rail - Background & Issues (Paperback, New)
Jonathan S. Fischer
R4,007 Discovery Miles 40 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

While Congress has been interested in high speed rail (HSR) since the 1960s, the provision of $8 billion for intercity passenger rail projects in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, enacted in February 2009, under the Obama administration, has invigorated the prospect of high speed passenger rail transportation in the United States. This book provides an overview of high speed rail in the United States and discusses what high speed rail would encompass, describes congressional initiatives to promote HSR and looks at high speed rail in selected other countries. Also discussed is the rationale for developing HSR, cost estimates and some of the challenges expected in implementing HSR.
