This book provides novel insights into two fundamental subjects in solid mechanics: virtual work and shape change. The author explains how the principle of virtual work represents a tool for analysis of the mechanical effects of the evolution of the shape of a system, how it can be applied to observations and experiments, and how it may be adapted to produce predictive theories of numerous phenomena. The book is divided into three parts. The first relates the principle of virtual work to what we observe with our eyes, the second demonstrates its flexibility on the basis of many examples, and the third applies the principle to predict the motion of solids with large deformations. Examples of both usual and unusual shape changes are presented, and equations of motion, some of which are entirely new, are derived for smooth and non-smooth motions associated with, for instance, systems of disks, systems of balls, classical and non-classical small deformation theories, systems involving volume and surface damage, systems with interactions at a distance (e.g., solids reinforced by fibers), systems involving porosity, collisions, and fracturing of solids.
This book addresses the key concerns regarding the operation of wind turbines in cold climates and focuses in particular on the analysis of icing and methods for its mitigation. Topics covered include the implications of cold climates for wind turbine design and operation, the relevance of icing for wind turbines, the icing process itself, ice prevention systems and thermal anti-icing system design. This book starts with a short recapitulation on basic concepts, common to any types of robots (serial, tree structure, parallel, etc.), that are also necessary for computation of the dynamic models of parallel robots. Then, as dynamics requires the use of geometry and kinematics, the general equations of geometric and kinematic models of parallel robots are given. After, it is explained that parallel robot dynamic models can be obtained by decomposing the real robot into two virtual systems: a tree-structure robot (equivalent to the robot legs for which all joints would be actuated) plus a free body corresponding to the platform. Thus, the dynamics of rigid tree-structure robots is analyzed and algorithms to obtain their dynamic models in the most compact form are given. The dynamic model of the real rigid parallel robot is obtained by closing the loops through the use of the Lagrange multipliers. The problem of the dynamic model degeneracy near singularities is treated and optimal trajectory planning for crossing singularities is proposed. Lastly, the approach is extended to flexible parallel robots and the algorithms for computing their symbolic model in the most compact form are given. All theoretical developments are validated through experiments.
Addressing structures, this book presents a classic discipline in a modern setting by combining illustrated examples with insights into the solutions. It is the fruit of the author's many years of teaching the subject and of just as many years of research into the design of optimal structures. Although intended for an advanced level of instruction it has an undergraduate course at its core. Further, the book was written with the advantage of having massive computer power in the background, an aspect which changes the entire approach to many engineering disciplines and in particular to structures. This paradigm shift has dislodged the force (flexibility) method from its former prominence and paved the way for the displacement (stiffness) method, despite the multitude of linear equations it spawns. In this book, however, both methods are taught: the force method offers a perfect vehicle for understanding structural behavior, bearing in mind that it is the displacement method which does the heavy number crunching. As a rule the book keeps things as simple as possible, conveying the basic ideas and refraining from lengthy calculations wherever possible. Further, it endeavors to unify the approach, showing that whatever applies to simple springs is equally valid for intricate frames. In addition to various design considerations, it also addresses several topics relating to optimal structures that will be of interest to students and teachers of structures.

New practical techniques for nonlinear system research and evaluation Nonlinear Systems Techniques and Applications provides the most practical techniques currently available for analyzing and identifying nonlinear systems from random data measured at the input and output points of the nonlinear systems. Diarmaid Murphy is an Army Officer in the Irish Defence Forces. Born in Dublin, he grew up in Kildare. Mr. Murphy originally joined the Irish Air Corps, training at Baldonnel Aerodrome. He was then accepted into Army officer training at the Military College and gained a Presidential Commission in the Irish Defence Forces, and a Diploma in International Military Studies. Having studied Transport Operations and Technology at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), he gained an honours degree with distinction and received the Wincanton Award upon conclusion of the course. The Army then assigned him as Officer in Charge of armoured maintenance in his Brigade. In this role, he managed workshops for the Irish Defense Forces, overseeing maintenance for his Brigade and much of the Irish Defense Forces vehicle fleet. In his active career in military transport and engineering, he has served as technical officer on purchasing boards; managed vehicle retrofit and modification programs; and supervised a wide variety of technical projects in telematics, post-accident analysis, fuel contamination and others. With considerable expertise in keeping a fleet of high performance vehicles on the road, Mr. Murphy has participated in projects and conferences with other nations operating a variety of military vehicles. He was also project manager on the restoration project for the Sliabh na mBan armoured Rolls Royce vehicle. Diarmaid Murphy also served in the Balkans as part of KFOR and in Lebanon with UNIFIL. This thesis studies the general heat conduction law, irreversible thermodynamics and the size effect of thermal conductivity exhibited in nanosystems from the perspective of recently developed thermomass theory. The derivation bridges the microscopic phonon Boltzmann equation and macroscopic continuum mechanics. Key concepts such as entropy production, temperature and the Onsager reciprocal relation are revisited in the case of non-Fourier heat conduction. Lastly, useful expressions are extracted from the picture of phonon gas dynamics and are used to successfully predict effective thermal conductivity in nanosystems.

The topic of Introduction to Random Vibrations is the behavior of
structural and mechanical systems when they are subjected to
unpredictable, or random, vibrations. These vibrations may arise
from natural phenomena such as earthquakes or wind, or from
human-controlled causes such as the stresses placed on aircraft at
takeoff and landing. Study and mastery of this topic enables
engineers to design and maintain structures capable of withstanding
random vibrations, thereby protecting human life.
This book summarizes research advances in micromechanics
modeling of ductile fractures made in the past two decades. The
ultimate goal of this book is to reach manufacturing frontline
designers and materials engineers by providing a user-oriented,
theoretical background of micromechanics modeling. Accordingly, the
book is organized in a unique way, first presenting a vigorous
damage percolation model developed by the authors over the last ten
years. This model overcomes almost all difficulties of the existing
models and can be used to completely accommodate ductile damage
developments within a single-measure microstructure frame. Related
void damage criteria including nucleation, growth and coalescence
are then discussed in detail: how they are improved, when and where
they are used in the model, and how the model performs in
comparison with the existing models. Sample forming simulations are
provided to illustrate the model s performance.
This book starts with a discussion of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, bifurcation theory and Hamiltonian dynamics. It then embarks on a systematic discussion of the traditional topics of modern nonlinear dynamics -- integrable systems, Poincare maps, chaos, fractals and strange attractors. The Baker s transformation, the logistic map and Lorenz system are discussed in detail in view of their central place in the subject. There is a detailed discussion of solitons centered around the Korteweg-deVries equation in view of its central place in integrable systems. Then, there is a discussion of the Painleve property of nonlinear differential equations which seems to provide a test of integrability. Finally, there is a detailed discussion of the application of fractals and multi-fractals to fully-developed turbulence -- a problem whose understanding has been considerably enriched by the application of the concepts and methods of modern nonlinear dynamics. On the application side, there is a special emphasis on some aspects of fluid dynamics and plasma physics reflecting the author s involvement in these areas of physics. A few exercises have been provided that range from simple applications to occasional considerable extension of the theory. Finally, the list of references given at the end of the book contains primarily books and papers used in developing the lecture material this volume is based on. This book has grown out of the author s lecture notes for an interdisciplinary graduate-level course on nonlinear dynamics. The basic concepts, language and results of nonlinear dynamical systems are described in a clear and coherent way. In order to allow for an interdisciplinary readership, an informal style has been adopted and the mathematical formalism has been kept to a minimum. This book is addressed to first-year graduate students in applied mathematics, physics, and engineering, and is useful also to any theoretically inclined researcher in the physical sciences and engineering.
